Please stop feeding the Trolls by answering any of his statements.
1702  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Questions on Private Key Generation on: January 25, 2015, 08:29:15 PM
From https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Private_key#Base58_Wallet_Import_format:

"Wallet import format is the most common way to represent private keys in Bitcoin. For private keys associated with uncompressed public keys, they are 51 characters and always start with the number 5 on mainnet (9 on testnet). Private keys associated with compressed public keys are 52 characters and start with a capital L or K on mainnet (c on testnet)."

The beginning encodes some metadata, like a version id; so you shouldn't expect the first two characters to be very random. But if the software you're using generates keys beginning with 5 instead of L or K it is outdated and producing keys which will result in significantly more data-size in your transactions.

I would recommend avoiding any browser based key generators. Many of them have dangerous implementations which provide little to no cryptographic security at all, most of them have never been reviewed by a third party.

Thank you both for your answers. I understand now, I'm just a noob. lol.

Two other question though.

(1) If you do not recommend browser based key generation (most people if not all here and on other sites tell people to go to bitaddress.org and use them in an offline manner for cold storage addresses generations), what do you consider to be reviewed or vetted and approved as being most safe for privatekey generation?

(2) Also, if there are privatekeys that are compressed and uncompressed, compression being used to cause less strain on the "Bitcoin Network", how come there isn't a dev mandated update or movement toward all future addresses being generated as compressed? (with old non-compressed addresses generated in the past still being accepted and usable by the network, of course)

Thanks again.
1703  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Questions on Private Key Generation on: January 25, 2015, 07:26:24 PM
Hey everyone,

I have been generating many paper wallets lately through different sources and have noticed that all the private keys I generate start either with "5K" or "5J". I'm talking about many dozen individual generations.

I have generated paper wallets on blockchain.info, bitaddress.org, and bitcoinpaperwallet.com and all have started for me with either "5K" or "5J"

If i compare all private addresses I control (all hot/cold addresses I have ever used), these are the common starting digits, 5K, 5J, L5, L1,  and these are the least common L2, L4, Ky, Kw. I have a total of 40 used addresses and the most common starting digits are 90% of the private keys, with 5K and 5J being 75% of the 90%. This seems unusual, but I am still an noob and don't pretend to understand everything.

Questions:

(1) Why isn't my private key generation more random (as to the first two digits)?

(2) Are those digits generated from the browser I'm using (currently used firefox for all the above generations)?

(3) Is this something to be concerned about or just a normal outcome from private key generations?

Thanks.

Seems to keep sending btc out. Might not still be, by the time you see it.
Keep watching it for 10 seconds .

The above link shows that some of the funds are going to the cold wallet of bitdice.me
So i assume the transactions relate to a bitcoin gambling site.
Maybe payouts and hot wallet movements. Clearly the above link is a deposit into a Cold Wallet (or so it claims from its label).

Interesting news.
1708  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTB] Your BTC with Any Giftcards (Discounts Available) on: January 17, 2015, 09:45:41 PM

For some you are offering a 6% discount while on others you are offering a 10% discount. Some you offer a discount for paying upfront and others you do not.
Yes. That is what I'm doing.
6% small load card, 10% large load card.
Pay upfront, get a discount, don't pay upfront, no discount.

BTC users already have this ability. I really don't think the "service" you are running makes logical sense for you to be doing as you are loosing money on every trade that you could do more efficiently
This is my only current means to acquire BTC. If I'm providing discounts, I think I'm aware that I'm losing some USD in the deal.

Thank you for your concern for my financial well being.
1709  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTB] Your BTC with Any Giftcards (Discounts Available) on: January 17, 2015, 09:08:32 PM
If you are buying the bitcoin with cash then I do not understand why you would be offering different amounts of discounts for different gift cards.
Please read again. If you read everything, it should be explained.
1) Discount for buying from me.
2) Discount for larger order.
3) Discount for paying upfront.
4) Charge for Possible Activation Fee, if that card has one. (Visa Vanilla does).

If you are trying to buy bitcoin with cash (as it appears you are doing) then I think it would make more sense for you to just make a thread in currency exchange offing to buy bitcoin with a cash deposit (or western union, walmart to walmart, ect). You would probably be able to buy more bitcoin for the amount of money you spend
I'm not interested in sending cash (or any form of payment) through banking or payment processor systems.

I'm facilitating the ability for a BTC users to be able to buy any giftcard they want now.
Compared to waiting for someone else selling a random card, or waiting till someone is selling a card you want.

I have made some changes to the page, if it helps.

1711  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Two Amazing things that Cannot be Stolen. on: January 17, 2015, 08:24:25 PM
1) Bitcoins:
Properly protected BTC cannot be hacked or stolen from you. It is a modern miracle and one of the most secure possessions you can ever have.

2) Genuine enthusiasm:
I arrived here (in 2011) ~1 month before the first major troll invasion. This community was a paradise of quality discussion, debates, active projects, and tons of optimism. I remember people sharing stories about lack of sleep due to wanting to read, learn, and experience the next developments in Bitcoin's exciting adventure.

Genuine enthusiasm can never be stolen from you, but too often we surrender to the general darkness which seems to be almost everywhere.

Is the future still bright?
Do you remember the last time you were really excited about the Bitcoin project?
...or anything at all?

1. Your funds are not safe neither in "cold storage". Read:

http://www.coindesk.com/research-hackers-install-backdoor-bitcoin-cold-storage/

many of you says: "cold storage is the best". well. it is not. that explains many hacks in Bitcoin which some of the bitcoiners considered to be very safe.

2. the genuine enthusiasm is necessary when you deal with a bubble like Bitcoin..otherwise the bubble cannot grow. it will remain a little bubble Smiley

Mayax,
Can you do me a favor and provide information related to "many hacks in Bitcoin which some of the bitcoiners considered to be very safe", that were held in cold storage?
I'm not interested in hot wallet addresses that were compromised by hacks into their computer/server systems.
I'm interested in known bitcoin losses that were held in cold storage addresses.
Links to articles or stories would be appreciated.
Thank you.

1714  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: This time the hash rate really took the dip on: January 17, 2015, 03:41:26 AM
Anyone who thinks that between $150 per BTC down to $50 per BTC, is the break even number for miners, is delusional.
We are around that number now, IMO.
At those numbers (between $150 per BTC down to $50 per BTC) you'll see end of many mining pools, and the beginning of the two or three Mega Pools.

Can you do steam gift card 25% off ?
Escrow ?

Pm sent.
Yeah I need steam 20$ code too. Only 1
25% off right ?

(4.) Willing to give discounts based on the size of order. (Do not contact if you want 25+% discount) Please be reasonable.
Thank you for your comment and possible Trolling.
1717  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTB] Your BTC with My Giftcards (Discounts Available) on: January 16, 2015, 05:25:07 PM

(2.a) Must send BTC first, since I have to go out to buy the physical cards with cash. I have no use for $200 in Chili's giftcards, if you back out.
This is not a valid reason to make the other party send bitcoin first. If you are concerned about the other party backing out of a deal then you should use escrow with specific terms spelled out as to when either party can back out of a trade.

You are not trusted and it would not be appropriate for anyone to send first to the OP

I have no problem using Escrow. Upfront BTC payment/Escrow is not the problem with the people who contact me currently.
Most of the people contacting me want 25-50% on each card. Which is not possible.
When I buy the card, I want that BTC price locked in. That is why I prefer BTC upfront. I have to walk to the store for each order.
Buyers begin to wiggle over BTC price after I get back. Then back out. Also Escrow takes time to set up and is hard with on the spot transactions.
With the current swings, i don't want to own a load of cards that I don't need.

It is understandable that giftcard buyers should not send first since I have no Trust. Criteria (2.a) should be read with Criteria (5.) + (7.) .

I may update my Criteria now, since many people contacting me seem to have the wrong idea or don't understand.
I am new to buying giftcards for your BTC and don't know all the unspoken rules and dos and don'ts of trading/selling/buying.
I am no volume, with my inventory only existing after you place a specific order. I just don't want to be scammed.

Please see below for the last critieria i stated above.
(8.) Willing to negotiate all the above terms if the buyer is serious and ready to go.

Thank you for your comment and concern.

1719  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are we going to see bitcoin below 100 soon? on: January 14, 2015, 11:13:05 PM
Could it be "satoshit" dumping the living shit out of his massive premine. I'm wondering what would happen if btc just crumbles to the ground. Will that be the end of all crypto's?

It is not Satoshi. It is BFL. And the dumping is taking place due to a court order to refund people's money...

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2sdwf8/butterfly_labs_is_the_culprit/

The Court would not Order them to sell all BTC at an increased loss for the creditors.
The responsible thing to do would be to sell as lots, like what the United States Federal Government did with Silk Road coins.
The Court doesn't want to recoup a penny on the dollar for the creditors.
1720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin hacked? Cryptography broken? Banned US and EU? or everybody just crazy? on: January 14, 2015, 08:38:58 PM
My bet: nobody has any rationale for this hysterical selling and dumping. Or did I miss something?

Supply is bigger than demand! => Price goes down

^^This is the only true answer.. anything else is an attempt to grab at anything.
This is a market. Does anyone really know why the stock market does what it does? Not really.
In the end, it will rebound if there is demand.
