1701  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Need help with a huge mess on: November 24, 2016, 12:47:23 AM
1) I created an address in armory and sent the coins to that address
2) I think I did the same with electrum.

I have the keys to the addresses and seed to electrum when it first loaded. Problem is I can't get it armory to load the blockchain so the balance of the wallet is not listed. Also as I stated electrum is watch only.

What steps do I have to take? I made a few copies of the original wallet.
Having the original wallet.dat file is not going to help because you already spent the Bitcoin from that wallet.

You can recover your electrum wallet with the seed and any Bitcoin that you sent to it will still be there.

Exactly.  But make sure that you have a backup of that seed!
1702  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BitCoin Node - maxconnections 873 on: November 23, 2016, 11:56:43 PM
RLIMIT_NOFILE is not related to this.

The limitation is defined here: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/40022fe5f2b576d023fa260eb176bde6d0779330/src/init.cpp#L855

FD_SETSIZE is default 1024 (set by system). That is the absolute maximum number of file descriptors. MIN_CORE_FILEDESCRIPTORS is 150, and nBind is default 1. Thus you can only have 1024-1-150=873 connections.

Thank you.

Is there any reason, why FD_SETSIZE is set to 1024? Do i break something if i increase this?

Depending on the system you are using, you may be able to increase it.  E.g. In some versions of Linux, you could probably recompile the kernel etc with different parameters.  It has been 10+ years since I've looked at this, so I don't have specifics.
1703  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Paper wallet with a strong password on: November 23, 2016, 05:37:38 PM
Hi i was just wondering is it basically impossible to take bitcoin from an encrypted paper wallet that has a strong password?

Just be sure the password is actually really strong.  Many passwords that people think are strong are not.

1704  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Need help with a huge mess on: November 23, 2016, 01:48:12 AM
1. How did you transfer the bitcoin from Bitcoin Core to Armory?  Import the keys or make a transaction to transfer to a new address?
2. How did you send the coins from Armory to Electrum?  Import the keys or make a transaction to transfer to a new address?

If you just imported the private keys to each, then as long as you still have the wallet.dat that contains them, you should be fine.

If you actually "sent" the coins (as you stated) from Armory to Electrum, and the transaction was confirmed, you would need the private keys to that new address.

Are you running Time Machine so that you could have a backup of the armory or electrum files?

Whatever you do, make another backup (or two) of the wallet.dat file (or fileS) you do have right now.
1705  Economy / Economics / Re: How many Bitcoins for Retirement. For Average Age and Salary NEWBIE. on: November 22, 2016, 05:31:39 PM
In the US/Europe/Japan etc $100,000 worth of bitcoin in today's dollars won't support you for long in retirement unless the value is continuing to grow and/or you are living with family.  Perhaps in some other less expensive locals it would be sufficient, but there are many variables.  If you search on "retirement income calculator" you can plug in values for yourself and see what the calculators show you'd need to have a safe retirement.

As far as what % should be in bitcoin, that is a personal choice given it could succeed wildly or not at all.

e.g.  this is US based, so if you are elsewhere, it might change slightly:

1706  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-11-22] Indian Bitcoin exchange tackles liquidity shortage on: November 22, 2016, 12:55:43 PM
One of India’s largest bitcoin exchanges, Coinsecure, now offers an account that does not require identification for deposits. “Users can submit their KYC when they want to withdraw or deposit INR and avail the discounted fee of 0.3%,” the company explains. “This removes the process of having to complete verification to start trading in Bitcoin.” Know Your Customer (KYC) identification requirements are demanded by regulators across the globe.

KYC is all about the global power-hungry elites wanting to control the population of their countries.

1708  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: blockchain unconfirmed transaction 12hrs ! on: November 22, 2016, 12:03:21 PM
he using Blockchain, how he can use double spend method on blockchain?

16hrs already passed, but i want to ask not a guarantee means it can take days & weeks or wont arrive ?
The estimate went up to 21 hours. It will most likely get there. Or the sender can choose to do a double spend with a higher fee, which is a bit more work than just waiting.

You keep saying things about "blockchain fees" and he is using "blockchain". All bitcoin uses the blockchain, so that is not a meaningful statement. Likewise, the block chain doesn't recommend fees. Are you talking about bitcoin core' s recommended fees or blockchain.info or something else?
1709  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-11-18] Bitcoin Tipping App ChangeTip Closes Its Doors on: November 21, 2016, 02:47:14 PM
It would be nice if they open sourced the software.  It is a cool concept, but I bet overhead was too much.

It doesn't work like that. They rather keep everything within their control, or sell it to an interested party, than simply publishing everything online where people can make use of what ChangeTip has invested plenty of time and money in. Other than that, there are already certain other tipping bots that do their work equally as good. Or you can get your own developed. The only question is.... Will you invest your precious time and money into something that might never reach a point of being profitable for you? I definitely wouldn't.

It can definitely work like that and it has happened many times before on other projects.

Likewise, if you read what they have said ChangeTip even discussed doing so per their public postings but didn't believe volunteers would accept the liability.  Also, again as they have publicly stated, they have not been able to find a buyer for it, everyone is at AirBnB now, and they have been running it for the last few months at a loss.

1712  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Have a partial priv key, need help guessing missing characters, ink is blurry on: November 16, 2016, 02:24:26 PM
So, I have 5 BTC stored "safely" in a paper, that I put in a safe... but the ink has faded partially, so now I'm going insane trying to figure out if something is a G or a 6, an a or 9 (seriously).

Is there a script to brute force the possible combination of characters that look similar in a private key?

If the "something" is only one character (it isn't clear above) and the only options are as above, that is only 3 combinations so you could just try all three without any need for software.

1713  Economy / Economics / Re: bitcoins and P2P lending on: November 15, 2016, 09:34:23 PM
The most common collaterials, which I've found are:

> LinkedIn
> eBay
> Reddit
> Instagram
> Twitter
> BitcoinTalk
> Runescape
(online MMORPG games like WOW, which are easy to change, and difficult to recover)

Could we continue this list, and grow it? - it'd be very, very valuable to solving this problem.

Assuming you are talking about accounts or the like at those web sites, I wouldn't accept any account as collateral for a loan.
1714  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: A proposal for the evolution of Bitcoin on: November 13, 2016, 04:06:14 PM
This seems (a) not technical (there is a lot of vague, hand-waving discussion, but it lacks technical details), and (b) like an alt-coin (at best) so it probably should be moved to a different section.

1716  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hedge Funds in Bitcoin on: November 11, 2016, 12:56:25 PM
What is the criteria for "rich families"? etc. Without knowing more details it is difficult to answer.

Folks,

Im wondering how hedge funds, private funds, rich family offices etc. which are invested in Bitcoin are actually organized.

Are they just buying Global Bitcoin Investment Trust (GBTC)?
Are they using exchanges or custodians like GDAX, XAPO, BTCC etc. to store the Bitcoins?
Are the storing it on her own with e.g. a hardware wallet like Trezor?

Thx for some thoughts!
1717  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-11-05]Total Bitcoin Transaction Volume Surpassed US$100bn in September on: November 08, 2016, 04:28:21 PM
There has been reports of fake trade volume from Chinese exchanges, I think $100bn might not be accurate

The fake volume from Chinese exchanges is usually on that exchange, not on the block chain.
1718  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-11-08] US election – buy or sell Bitcoin? on: November 08, 2016, 04:26:33 PM
The difference will be only slight in monetary policy.  If Hillary wins, expect more debasement of the currency so bitcoin (and PMs) should benefit by being a safe haven for people who are paying attention. Similarly, whenever inflation picks up, in dollar terms bitcoin would benefit.

If Trump wins, it could be more of the same, much would depend on his Fed appointments, tax policy etc.

Likewise, from a protection from instability standpoint, bitcoin makes sense when you have authoritarian socialists running who have made it clear they intend to take more money from those who are working.

None of this is short term of course.
1719  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How will Bitcoin 1.0 look like? on: November 07, 2016, 06:41:39 PM
We probably will have 1.0 when all the bitcoins are mined up.

Satoshi wanted to go to 1.3 back in 2010...so who knows when the version will be 1.0:

Is it about time we lose the Beta?  I would make this release version 1.3.

1720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: wallet question on: November 07, 2016, 01:29:18 PM
Ok, thanks for the confirmation, I guess I have the wrong wallet.dat file and I need to find the correct one. I thought since 3 years the format of the wallet.dat file changed as well and it needed updating but I guess this is not the case

Good advice above, but whatever you do, keep multiple backups.
