1721  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Need S2 IO Board - Help on: July 14, 2014, 11:48:10 AM
Yep, tried that.  I think I have exhausted every possibility.  I sent an order to the BitMain guys for new IO boards but haven't gotten a confirmation yet.  Assuming that goes through I hope that will solve the problem.

Removing the Beaglebone and then resoldering it back on seems really tough......

the BBB board just fits on using its IO pins i think - no soldering at all, just open the case and remove the central board to swap the beaglebone black.

other ideas:
1) try reseating everything. hash boards, control boards, power cabling, and the cables between the exterior ethernet/lcd and the backplane. something loose would cause issues
2) try just 1 at a time, and temporarily turn off everything else. if some other device already claimed the IP (192.168.1.99 or 192.168.1.199, i cant recall) that the S2 would not be able to communicate with the router or your PC.
3) try on another network, just in case of the above issue.
4) plug one in, then reboot your router. it may recognise and connect the device this way
5) check that there is an SD card on the BBB - in the fluke chance there isnt that would explain the issue

its unlikely 3 systems have the same issue - if you turn them on what happens? do the LEDS blink, does the LCD come on, do the lights on the ethernet port blink or light up with or without a cable inserted? Even without a web connection you should be able to boot up the device and have it display something on the LCD
1722  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 14, 2014, 11:05:49 AM
Can we not get a new part sent out later and fit it ourselves ?

If your competent with a solder iron and playing with pcb's/components that is !!

If DC-DC limit is the only then we can buy a new DC-DC converter from local market.
Fixing it in place of the current DC-DC converter will not become a problem for most.
I assume most of the miners can DIY that.
For all that, we need some more information or clarification regarding this limitation or instability.

its really not that simple. Swapping an inductor with only two pads might be reasonably simple, but the DC-DC is usually more complex.

The S1 used the 30A TPS53355 which had 10 or 12 pins IIRC, and a very small footprint. It would need smd tools to switch out and only for a pin-compatible replacement (if there are any over 30A). Sounds like the S3 either doesnt heatsink this component very well or that they went with a less expenswive 25A-30A regulator that does not push as high as a texas instruments regulator can.

potential solution: increase the chip voltage slightly to decrease the amperage of the regulator. (ie: if chip runs at 0.7V, 30A [21w of power use] it may be possible to turn the voltage up slightly to 0.8V at 21w (or 26A) to provide the amperage headroom to overclock a little bit extra, but at the expense of efficiency)
1723  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [GUIDE] Undervolt antminer s1 [1.19W/GH at the wall] on: July 14, 2014, 02:08:35 AM

Hello,
this is my first post, I am mining novice in BTC
But I still have a few questions:
1. How do I set the frequency correctly?
option 'freq_value'    '0A81'  #275M <- What does this exactly mean? It changes with chip-freq setting as I have seen in the config.
option 'chip_freq'     '275'  <- Can I adjust it in 1MHz-steps, by simply putting in the desired freq.-value?
option 'timeout'       '45' <- This seems to be just for booting up the ant, until chips are ready?

1) its a hexcode that the chips interpret as a frequency command/modifier. There are formulas available to calculate a value, but plenty shared in the forums for common MHz intervals.
2) this is the value that the miner displays. as far as i know you could type words in that spot and still mine at whatever the hexcode frequency is
3) timeout is the expiry of hashing a specific nonce i think

ps: '#' in coding denotes that what is after it is a text comment in the file but not a program command, usually used:        function /file   #this does yadda
1724  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS] Mega Ultra Rare 1BTC Silver-Gold Round /w "The Golden Heart" error! on: July 13, 2014, 07:16:46 PM
*lealana coin picture*

silver heart 1LTC error?
partially being overlapped by hologram.

unrelated, and IMO lealana 1LTC coins are all poorly stamped (I own several, and all have ugly stamping stress marks (but gorgeous holograms))

The Gilt heart-coin is probably worth 3-5 BTC depending on the buyer. A good condition gold/silver coin would fetch about 2.2-2.5BTC ungraded. (I sell for 2.3)
1725  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS] 6 x 1-BTC Brass 2013 Casascius Coins on: July 13, 2014, 07:09:19 PM
Are you open to using escrow for these?  With some better pictures I might buy these from you.

Im down to split them with you if you want. I have no use for 6 coins, but I wouldnt mind buying 3.

Well my issue is the lack of escrow...so not going to bother.

Fair enough.  When I sell, I *loathe* escrow, but when I'm the buyer I love having the option...

Although, I would like to point out that trusting an established escrow isn't much different than trusting a member (e.g. me) with a solid transaction history.  Either way you're putting your trust in someone.

+1. However, I am willing to offer escrow if needed - Ive got trade history as buyer, seller, and escrow provider on items including casascius coins. 0.5% charge, usually covered by the buyer, if the coins are shipped with tracking and delivery and quality confirmed within 48hrs of delivery as shown in tracking.
1726  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANN: BITMAIN has Tested Its 28nm Bitcoin Mining Chip BM1382 on: July 11, 2014, 02:07:19 AM
still nothing come on bitmain give us an update  Grin

I think it may take until the 14th to start shipping, and the closed sales is to get out the first generation and get some feedback before committing far larger batches. same goes for the chip, its possible the first three batches were an entire first run, with the second run of the working chip to be shortly and much larger.

you dont want to commit 100% until you know its working 100%. You never know if customers will alert you to small issues like poor shipping survival, heatsink/thermal concerns, early-failing components, etc. Most of these are known and replicated from the S1 design, but i imagine they still have some changes that will get attention by users (such as the case/shroud for example - if its sharp people will complain, if its heavy or needs more/less heatsink they will get lots of feedback that they dont get on the test bench
1727  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Novec 7000 Project [immersive evaporating cooling] on: July 10, 2014, 10:54:35 AM
Sorry, cross posting with rig photos thread...

I think he is running Novec 7000 which changes state at 35? Very difficult to condense the vapour on something like that unless you are in very low ambient temps or you have a crap load of below ambient cooling (a single pelt uses as much power as it transfers so hardly an economical option). Novec 7100 boils at 65 which is a perfectly acceptable temp for most chips to run at and a lot easier to condense the vapour from 65 than 35.

The thing with HFE's is that they solve all your the chip cooling problems and move them along the chain; if your asics are pulling 1000w then you then need at least 1000w of cooling to condense the vapour. 1000w of cooling is not so hard from 65 but it is quite a challenge from 35 depending on you ambient temps.

its a lot easier and cheaper to cool a closed-loop coil within the vapour area, and then extract the heat of that loop outside the building or with fewer fans than would be needed for air cooling.

Below is a pump and heat exchanger that moves heat outside so it can be dissipated by chillers.
1728  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ROCKMINER ASIC miner official thread on: July 10, 2014, 12:46:25 AM
I think they should first work on those 10%+ rejects we all are dealing with,
it's nice to see a better unit, but it still has these rejects as seen on the pics....

agreed. its unfair to advertise unit such as the rk-box to be running 450-480GH when the actual accepted hashrate is only 390-425GH considering the 9-13% reject rates ive seen
1729  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Converting Old PSU connectors and cables into PCIE cables for the Antminer S3 on: July 09, 2014, 10:47:42 PM
check my signature link - i have quality splitters and 16awg PCIE leads.

as for gutting an old PSU to make it useful for PCIe- be casreful, its likely easier to go with a new PSU that will provide a higher efficiency rating to save money in the long run
1730  Economy / Securities / Re: [ActiveMining] Official Shareholder Discussion Thread [Moderated] on: July 09, 2014, 02:28:37 AM
Ken has gone into hiding; even if there is a reason for the drop in hashrate such as power costs during that time window he won't respond here.
power costs could not possibly be an issue with devices in the 1w/GH range, unless he was paying something outrageous like >$0.25/kWh for power and cooling during the middle of the peak hours, which would mean he built the least-profitable bitcoin mining farm when its much more likely he would have a location with total costs <$0.12 for combined cooling and power per 1kWh of hardware use which will be profitable for some time still.

the likely answers are problems with board failure or tripping fuses, hashrate redirection/theft, or the AC system being so massively underpowered that thermal throttling or high error rates may be occurring during the middle of the day.

A good strategy would be for someone, such as Ken, to have their own private mining pool.  This pool is setup as the priority for the miners.  However, most of the time, this pool is off, so they fail-over to Eligius.   When Ken goes to bed, he switches the private pool back on (Reattaches the network cable for instance) which the miners then pick up on and switch over to.  He generates some coins he needs in his private wallet, and then switches it back off.

That way he doesn't need to redirect the miners all the time.  He just turns on his personal pool when he needs some coins.  Though, it's probably his project manager doing it to skim some coins off the top.  I doubt Ken is this savy.  I'm not even sure Ken knows how Bitcoins actually work.

someone savvy in the company could also do it. Ken might not be the kind of person who minds or notices an employee or family member redirecting coins like this, and there are likely a few other people besides him with access to the systems.
1731  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Save 50% on PSUs w/ Gigampz: Board for DPS-800GBA 850/1000 Watt Server PSU on: July 09, 2014, 12:59:06 AM
Right.  A single 6-pin = 6 wires, 3 for + and 3 for GND.  Right now, I am running 2 for + and 2 for GND, per blade.

I'm not sure I understand the question; You can fit 4 6-pin PCIe cables per board  by doubling up the wires per contact.  12 contacts total and 24 wires for 4, 6 pin cables.

the cables i sell in my signature link will fit like the image above, and I sell splitters that can be attached to that if you need more lower-wattage connections for a device like the rk-box (130W per splitter plug or 260W per PCIe cable working safely and without any thermal concerns)

Here's some proof that Mike's been producing the gold B coins in 2014, I only counted 11 though.

http://casascius.uberbills.com/?address=1AgGhDAgEpbkgnCaDGH7tTJagktY9hVxrm

I just want to make sure that when people say "these will never be made again" that they're held accountable. Crypto-currency was created to (among many things) provide equality - if some of us are misleading the buying public then some of us need to make sure we do some fact checking. An efficient market helps us all.

There are also casascius 2011 error coins funded in 2012. Some 25 BTC casascius coins have the 2011 date stamped but were funded in 2012, 2013....you get the picture   Roll Eyes

If you can show me a coin with the 2014 date stamped on it I will be pleasantly surprise.....

It must be this - however, I am actually surprised there were any funded that late - I thought he deceided to step back really shortly after the fincen stuff

It could be that he sold unfunded coins and the buyer funded the coins after getting it.
no way - Mike said that would not happen due to security concerns, because if it did it would destroy the illusion of security for ALL casascius coins
1733  Economy / Securities / Re: [ActiveMining] Official Shareholder Discussion Thread [Moderated] on: July 09, 2014, 12:52:48 AM

its like clockwork when the hashrate drops. I've said before - its not difficult to create a basic cron file that will modify the cgminer parameters and reboot at specified times. I use this to underclock during 12-5pm when its most expensive, then back up to speed overnight. It can be used to change pool info (COUGH ACTM COUGH) and can even be set to act differently depending on day of the week or day of the month so that it looks 'random'

Really want an excuse for why the hashrate has more than halved in the span of two weeks - he cant possibly be selling them, at least not via the website. They must be either breaking down or being directed elsewhere. The lack of explanation is the kicker.

zumzero; you defend the company frequently, can you put a positive spin on this?
1734  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ROCKMINER ASIC miner official thread on: July 09, 2014, 12:42:01 AM
One more thing, people can use one RPI run ONE RK/R3-BOX, hashrate will go up,and its worthy for RPI cost.

hold on - am i getting 12% rejects because one RPi cannot adequately operate 2 rk-boxes?
1735  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: RK-BOX,450GH/S,480W ,shipping date 25th on: July 08, 2014, 11:00:32 AM
I wouldn't fret about duplicate shares unless your difficulty setting is really low and you're worried about sending 10-15% extra up the pipe. My best hashing results were on ghash.io >450, and worst on eligius <450, although, I'm not really sure why...

As far as frequencies go, you may want to try setting --rock-freq and see if it acknowledges it in the same way r-boxes do. I compiled rockminer's cgminer fork on Linux x86 and ARM, and noticed in the UI that it's using a new auto frequency setting. It appears the default is 350.

different frequency commands seem to have no effect. I added rock-freq, amu-freq, and rmu-freq options of 330 and 12hrs later still have a 940GH hashrate with 12.5% errors.

I switched to a 90CFM fan on one unit, and it still wasnt enough to keep it cool. using a pair of 60cfm fans to col the outer heatsinks helped though.  I really need a silent 110CFM option available in Canada
1736  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: July 07, 2014, 06:20:16 PM
That was great timing.  I had just convinced myself to go margin long at 629, then the ISIS news hit and the price dropped to 616 before I could pull the trigger.

This skittishness is cringe worthy.  There is a hint of FUD, so everyone sells.  There is no thought of whether the story is even important (see the auction for a great example).  BTC traders need to put on their big boy pants and stop being pansies.  Or stop trying to make a living from $5 profits.

if you are confident take advantage of the low price, or chase the rally Smiley

I know the time will come, just need to be patient. gains rarely happen overnight

Update:

Thank you for addressing all of your concerns here.  & Thank you So Much for waiting, Let me answer these one by one!!

#1: Reference to Raspberry Pi
using SSH:

USERNAME: pi
PASSWORD: rockminer

/etc/cgminer.conf - contains very little hardware settings outside of icarus-options:115200:1:1 - is there another file that determines fan speed/PWM control and chip frequency?

#3:Cgminer/Drivers/USB/Hardware Design/Performance Improvement Suggestions
We do read each message and all suggestion from the members here.  We are reviewing each item carefully and we are constantly working on better cgminer and driver performance.  Hardware designs is another thing we are constantly working on, too.  It’s not just how pretty it will look, but cost performance, possible delays associated with the pretty case design, packaging restrictions, physical damage control factor and etc…  At the moment, we have the working miners that can hash at almost 500GH/S, so we decided to release them to the market so that customers can enjoy the hashing power now.  We are still making our miners better and better.  Please stay tuned and you’ll see more news coming from us.  When it is ready, we will announce more updated versions for you.
more options should be made available if possible, particularly chip speed and fan speed. make a rackmount design in a sturdy frame and blades like the R3. no usb hubs and wires everywhere - just a proper serial or backplane connection build in.
#4: "sandwich" the PCB between two heatsinks
This is something we decided to do to enhance the chip cooling.  The colder the chips are, better hashing speed it would achieve.  Yes, if we use less materials, less cost, however, the cost performance to produce the miner is not the only thing we consider when we designed our product.  Our ultimate goal is to produce a high performance miner.  If you have some better realistic suggestions, please let us know!!  We are here to listen!!!
the heatsinks can be smaller. I think reducing the overall aluminum weight by 15% is a reasonable target and still allow good cooling. Thinner blades on the heatsinks (not thin enough to bend) would allow better cooling with less material.
more people love them than not.  We can’t keep everyone happy at the same time.

#8: Duplicated Share Questions….
This does not mean, you are losing the hash rate.  All it does is create more work processing for the pool.  Duplicate is well simply a duplicate.  Cgminer doesn’t even bother  tracking them in detail.  The miner is transmitting the same work item, however, the valid work is the stat that affect hash rate.  Even though this does not affect the hash rate, we made the new control card to address this issue and other improvements were made to increase the hash rate.  When it is in production quality, we will let you know and it will start to ship out with the new miners.  (This is an improvements we are making and not the defects)
Im definitely losing hashrate to rejects - 12% or higher

I have 2 RBoxes running at 450-500gh/s off of 1 RPi on the latest version, although with 10 percent rejects.

pretty musch same as me. after a full weekend its a 439GH/unit average but with 12.28% rejects.   822GH at the pool (ie: 12.3% less). If the cause of rejects can be identified and resolved, as well as adding a proper fan speed control, these could be an alright unit. but its not a finished product by any means
