Hey all,

If you sell services for bitcoin, I'd be glad to add your website to a directory I'm building. Hopefully when I have enough listings, I'll update with site address, etc....It's not finished yet =)

Just post in this thread or PM me with your URL & I'll add your site. If you don't have a site, post your linkedin, github profile page, FB, etc...

If you want to list some other data (public only please), I will look at adding that to the listing so it shows up how you want.

Thanks!

I am also making a listing website..lets start competition

1749  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why XPRIZE Founder Peter H Diamandis is Swapping Gold for Bitcoin | CD News on: June 23, 2014, 02:59:34 PM
Peter H Diamandis, the founder and Chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation, has given bitcoin his blessing, describing it as a globally important and disruptive technology.

In a blog post, Diamandis wrote that bitcoin is finally moving from its “deceptive phase to a very disruptive phase”. He made a compelling argument, outlining positive developments in the bitcoin ecosystem and the evolution of his own opinion on the matter.

Diamandis said he has been tracking bitcoin since its inception and his confidence has grown to such an extent that he is even trading in a portion of his gold holdings for bitcoin.

The XPRIZE Foundation has been around since 1995, with the stated goal of promoting emerging technologies through public competitions and initiatives.

The foundation’s board of trustees includes big names like PayPal co-founder Elon Musk, President of the Huffington Post Media Group Arianna Huffington, and Google co-founder Larry Page.

Changing the way we think of money

Diamandis explained the basic properties of bitcoin and made a bold claim: he believes bitcoin will do for money what email did for communications.

He said:

“At its core, bitcoin is a smart currency, designed by very forward-thinking engineers. It eliminates the need for banks, gets rid of credit card fees, currency exchange fees, money transfer fees, and reduces the need for lawyers in transitions… all good things. Most importantly, it is an ‘exponential currency’ that will change the way we think about money. Much the same way email changed the way we thought of mail.”

Diamandis further pointed out that bitcoin is following ‘the six Ds’ – it is digitised, deceptive, disruptive, dematerialising, demonetising and democratising. Currently, he believes bitcoin is currently in the process of entering the disruptive phase.

Five phases of adoption

Diamandis borrowed from Second Market founder Barry Silbert when explaining the various phases of digital currency development.

Phase 1 was the deceptive, experimental phase, from 2009 to 2011. Phase 2, starting in 2011, marks the beginning of the early adopter phase. Phase 3, 2012 through mid-2014, is described as the beginning of the venture capital phase.

Diamandis says we are in the middle of Phase 3:

“We are right in the middle of Phase 3 right now. Thousands of bitcoin companies are getting funding. Many of these are trying to create the ‘User-Interface Moment’.

Next, between fall 2014 and 2015, Diamandis expects to see the start of Phase 4, described as the Wall Street Phase, which will be marked by “institutional money acknowledging digital currencies as an asset class”.

Phase 5 is mass global consumer adoption, which Diamandis and Silbert believe is just one to two years away.

Call for experimentation

Diamandis believes people need to get out there and start experimenting with bitcoin.

“Learn, do, teach… Go experiment! Create a bitcoin wallet and buy some bitcoin. There is no better way to learn than by doing,” he concluded.

Slightly confusingly, in his post, he mistakenly names merchant processor BitPay as a bitcoin exchange.

Diamandis concluded by mentioning his plans to discuss the digital currency in more detail via his Abundance 360 Community, which describes itself as “a group of entrepreneurs passionate about generating extraordinary wealth while creating a world of abundance”.

1750  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Jersey group in campaign to create 'Bitcoin Isle' | BBC | #bitcoin #campaign on: June 23, 2014, 12:52:30 PM

A campaign has been launched to make Jersey a world leader in digital currencies.

Bitcoin payments are already accepted in a handful of places but an industry expert says, if the States allow banks to accept and trade with it, Jersey could become a magnet for new business.

Robbie Andrews, of bit.coin.je, an industry body set up to promote and campaign for the currency, wants to create a "Bitcoin Isle".

Treasury Minister Senator Philip Ozouf said he wanted Jersey to be an early leader in the field.

There have been issues around the digital currency, including a lack of regulation and concerns over potential for money laundering and other illegal activity.

In October 2013 the FBI shut down online marketplace Silk Road. The site traded in drugs and other illegal goods and took payments using "crypto-currencies" such as Bitcoin.

In December 2013, Fiona Le Poidevin, Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance, said the current lack of regulation was an area of concern.

She said the Bitcoin concept had become "increasingly familiar, but it is still in its infancy and this brings with it both challenges and opportunities".

Senator Ozouf said: "[This] is a sector that could hold significant opportunities for Jersey.

"Our infrastructure of world-class financial services and digital expertise gives us the tools to be an early leader in the field. Innovation will be central to Jersey's future prosperity.

"We are keen to support local businesses by helping to create a well-regulated and responsive environment for investment in the sector."

Early in 2014 the Chinese government said Bitcoin was not a currency and banned financial institutions from dealing with Bitcoin exchanges.

BBC chief business correspondent, Linda Yueh, said: "It is clear that regulators around the world are unsure about what to make of Bitcoin and are still in the process of making up their mind if and how it and other crypto-currencies should be regulated."

Mr Andrews said Bitcoin was vital to the future of Jersey's economy and would be used globally.

"In the same way email changed how we send files globally, Bitcoin will change how we transact our lives. It is a network you can use for payment that is global and not managed by one industry body."

He said he would like to see more places accept payment in digital currency.

"My plan would be that you get the bus and pay using your phone. You get the paper, you pay with your phone. And at no point do you constantly give people your credit card details."

Tiffin tearoom on St Helier's waterfront already accepts Bitcoin. Owner Giles Day said: "It is fast, reliable and a very secure payment method. It is the way of the future. It is what the digital and finance industry will be using and those two industries are key to Jersey.

"With a credit card, we get charged and it takes a while to get the money. We get Bitcoins into our account straight away, without any charges."

Mr Andrews said the next step would be Bitcoin banking, meaning workers would get paid in Bitcoins.

"That would require new legislation and the States need to act quickly if they want to capitalise on it," he said.

"At the moment there is a big push for a digital industry in Jersey to grow and if you asked any technologist what is the one technology that fits between technology and finance, it would be a crypto-currency like Bitcoin."

1755  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Survey Says Most Americans Want to Ban Bitcoin: Highlighting Need for Education on: June 22, 2014, 03:23:14 PM
Bitcoin, the five year old digital currency, is gaining mass traction as bitcoin companies receive hundreds of millions of dollars in investment, but the majority of the American public remains highly uninformed of the benefits and uses of bitcoin and have heard little to nothing about it.

In a new survey published today, almost 2,000 American voters were asked of their opinion on a range of financial questions, including bitcoin, during the end of May and the beginning of June. The results show a wide gap between the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the religious as opposed to the non-religious and a gender difference between males and females. The younger, richer, the less religious and the more male you are, the more likely you are to know about bitcoin, be permissive towards allowing it for use in commerce and to use or to have used the currency.

The Generations Gap

As one would expect, younger individuals are highly enthusiastic about bitcoin, especially when compared to the older population. 55% of 18 to 29 year olds know some or a lot about bitcoin, as opposed to 62% of 30 to 45 year old who know little to nothing. The lack of knowledge increases slightly for individuals older than 45, with 66% of those age 45 to 65 and 73% of individuals older than 65 knowing nothing or very little about the online currency.

This lack of knowledge highlights the need for more education in all age groups, especially for the older generations,  as it seems to have led to concerning attitudes towards using bitcoins for commerce. The young, 58%, and the middle age group, 54%, show overwhelming support for allowing the purchase of goods and services with the digital currency. The older age groups have the opposite attitude with 64% of 45-65 year old and a staggering 73% of individuals older than 65 stating that they were against voluntary transactions in goods and services if the means of exchange is bitcoins.

The Rich and Poor, The Religious and the Atheists, the Male and the Female

The higher the income and wealth, the more likely you are to know about bitcoin with 51% of earners of 100,000 dollars and more knowing some or a lot about the currency, as opposed to only 29% of individuals earning 50,000 or less. Perplexingly, this greater knowledge does not translate into a highly permissive attitudes, as, although the high income earners are slightly more in favor than the other income groups towards allowing commerce with bitcoins, the majority, 55%, are against it.

Non-religious individuals, 48%, know some or a lot about bitcoin, as opposed to 35% of religious individuals, corresponding to a 50-50 split on whether the government should allow or prohibit transactions in bitcoins for the non-religious individuals as opposed to 63% of protestants and 58% of roman Catholics who are against the purchase of goods and services with bitcoins.

The same attitudes are expressed by females as opposed to males, with only 27% of females knowing some or a lot about bitcoin as opposed to 48% of males and 62% of females being in favor of banning bitcoin commerce as opposed to 53% of males.

The Need for Education

There seems to be a strong correlation between individuals who state that they know some or a lot about bitcoin and their permissive attitude towards the purchasing of goods and services with bitcoin. The more they know about bitcoin, the more likely they are to be in favor of allowing it for the purchase of goods and services and the more likely to have used it or currently use the currency.

The effects of education on attitudes towards bitcoin highlights the importance of informing and educating the public on the nature and advantages of bitcoin and the need to counteract misconceptions or misinformation about the currency. The greatest misconception may be that bitcoin is pervasively used for illegal activities. Studies however show that the dollar remains the currency of choice, far surpassing bitcoin, to purchase and sell controlled substances and other illegal goods or services. The general public needs to be informed that purchases from Silk Road amount to an almost insignificant 0.25% of the total global money-laundering and other illegal activities, accounting for only 1 billion dollars out of a 500 billion to 1 trillion market and that bitcoin has far greater and legal uses than purchasing goods or services on Silk Road.

Thankfully, merchant adoption and investment in bitcoin is increasing at a fast pace with celebrities and industry leaders in Silicon Valley and beyond adopting and promoting the currency. As such, it may be only a matter of time before the misconceptions are addressed, leading to an attitude change as the public is informed and accustomed to, what many call, the greatest technological innovation since the internet.
