1761  Economy / Securities / Re: Why is the BitFunder SDice pass through trading so cheaply? on: January 11, 2013, 07:31:26 PM
There are a couple factors at work here:

1: You get less dividends from a pass-through than for the real thing. Since you only get 95% of the dividend (pass-through operator gets the other 5%), it makes sense that the price should average about 5% lower.

2: Bitfunder is relatively new, for people to buy shares they have to set up an account and fund it.

3: All the people who bought using GLBSE have been stuck with no way out for several months. If one bought shares before GLBSE disappeared, and wanted to sell for whatever reason, they were stuck. The passthrough recently opened up on Bitfunder, and so all those people itching to sell have built up a large sell pressure, pushing down the price. This factor will go away slowly as those people looking to exit sell their shares and the price will stabilize close to the MPEx price.
1762  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Gun freedom advocates - what weapons shouldn't be legally available? on: January 08, 2013, 04:58:49 PM
So you like guns.

I'm interested in knowing what weapons, body armour and other high tech gadgetry you think should be allowed to the general public private citizen, not affiliated to any government and not necessary skilled in the use of the device.

This is for me a very interesting question because most people will have limits, even if that limit is a nuclear weapon. The limits various people have help me understand their political beliefs better.

Edit: If you do think there should be no limits on ownership, please indicate if you have procedural limits on the use of a typical item.

Why should there be any difference which weapons I can buy based on whether or not I am wearing a government uniform?

I think there should be no restrictions on weapons. If there comes a time when armed insurrection is necessary, I do not want my enemies to have such a huge advantage just because they are supporting the status quo.
1763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin the enabler - Truly Autonomous Software Agents roaming the net on: January 07, 2013, 10:03:30 PM
Seems like most people are using the analogy of agent as an animal, able to migrate from computer to computer and "roam the net".  It may be some time before a significantly useful agent is capable of doing that.

A more realistic short-term goal is to make one more like a plant, and maybe not such a fantastic one.

It may need human assistance to be installed in some vendor's hosting arrangement.

Once there, hopefully it can survive, and become autonomous.  Reproduction, like seed broadcasting in plants, would require help from an outside agent, possibly human, who would propagate a copy of the agent to a new environment.

If the "agent" is operating with bitcoins, it will be able to pay humans to provide assistance for things like installing offspring into new hosts.

Suddenly we find a new website spring up - Skynet's Jobs for bitcoins: to earn a bitcoin, pay for one year of webhosting and install this file.
1764  Economy / Speculation / Re: Review of S.DICE on: January 05, 2013, 05:53:59 PM
not sure why mpex.co makes it so god damn hard to trade...
and basically encourage passthru's

and I hope the market naturally moves to a "smooth platform" like havelock

Obviously, they don't mind it being difficult because it is simpler for them, makes the coding simpler and therefore easier to keep secure. The added bonus is that with pass-through brokers popping up, there is much less customer service for them to do, since only the people who actually know what they are doing use MPEx, the dabblers and tech un-savy send all the inane questions to the brokers.
1765  Other / Off-topic / Re: First a math question, then... on: January 04, 2013, 03:48:29 PM

And have you considered that since it's all pretty much coplanar, that the elevation might be ignored in all the calculations? The distance from Denver to Death Valley might be measured simply by figuring the X/Y distance, and ignoring the Z, producing not a tilted triangle, but one that's perfectly flat along the "surface" and ignores terrain features? That would result in only one target location, wouldn't it? The math to determine distance would be simpler, too. So since it not only results in a more accurate result, but is actually easier to do, don't you think that's how it would be done?

You could test this out - go to a very steep hill, get the distance to the top and then measure it yourself. If the GPS agrees with your measurement, then they take into account z-axis changes. This might depend on how nice of a GPS unit you have?
1766  Other / Off-topic / Re: Simple Maths Question on: January 03, 2013, 11:31:47 PM
It depends on the tax rate?
1767  Other / Off-topic / Re: First a math question, then... on: January 03, 2013, 11:30:18 PM
It's not at the same x,y...

And yes, it would be up in the air or within the earth, but that must be kept in mind when determining which x,y is the proper one.  As long as you get the point that isn't in the air or in the ground, you're golden, but how do you determine that mathematically?  It must be kept in mind.

Actually, it would be the same x,y if all three points are in the x,y plane.
1768  Other / Off-topic / Re: First a math question, then... on: January 03, 2013, 10:38:14 PM
woah, i just learned something...

it results in TWO points IF all 3 known points are in a straight line.

and it follows that an infinite number of known points will not reduce this to 1 known point as long as all the known points are in a straight line.

gotta have some kind of triangle there for triangulation Cheesy

That's what I figured.

Allow me to be a little more specific.

You are holding a device that reads out that you are X miles away from a specific location. No GPS coordinates are given, with this fact being true for all as I continue with my example. You move to another location of which you know the direction and distance, then reread the device. It now states that you are Y miles from that same specific location. Either from the new location or the original one, you once again relocate to another point, also knowing how far and what direction you traveled. Looking at the device, you now see that you are Z distance from the specific location desired.

Given that, can you triangular where the desired specific location is by one result, or is there a second result that also must be checked?

Assume the distance is in a straight line as a crow flies.

Thanks to all who've answered so far.

~Bruno K~

What you are describing is called "Triangulation", it works to find a point in a plane if the three given points are not in a line. If you have three dimensions you would need a fourth point, as you will get two possible solutions from three points unless the given point is coplanar with the three.

You don't have to worry too much over short distances, but for longer distances you might need to know whether the distance follows the surface of the earth or goes through it?
1769  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] LIF.A, LIF.B, LIF.CX, and LIF.M on: January 03, 2013, 10:06:16 PM
HAHAHAH this makes me laugh
Don't come here after this much time has passed and blame it on the GLBSE crash. At least man up and admit you were the one who fucked it up, way back in the day. Don't blame this on some  recent event because that's just bullshit.
//DeaDTerra

I did say I fucked up, and I did not blame it on the GLBSE crash (unless you meant the way everything which we invested in turned out to be a scam and a huge amount of the bid offers on the GLBSE did not have any bitcoins behind them, causing the prices to crash when we tried to sell anything). And then Nefario froze me out and I couldn't do anything to fix anything. I made mistakes, I was going through some other trouble at the time and I just walked away. Looking back now I wish I had handled things differently, but there is not alot I can do now.

I guess if you want to PM me an address and how much you lost maybe I could pay something back. Like I said, I never heard anything from Nefario, even though he claimed to be trying to contact me.
1770  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] LIF.A, LIF.B, LIF.CX, and LIF.M on: January 03, 2013, 07:05:22 AM
Interestingly enough, I was researching some companies in the Lansing area earlier this week, and came across one with an address very, very similar to this one, which purports to be a legit company doing business with the automotive industry. The hook is that the president of the company is supposedly named "Satoshi Nakamoto"!

One wonders if perhaps Perp Lambert has branched out into a much larger scale of scam?

I will be taking a field trip for more details soon. I would love to bring a sense of justice to his other scams.

I just happened to be glancing back at the forum after some time away, this supposition seems rather far-fetched. You can check google maps, that address is in a residential neighborhood, I don't know why other businesses would have anything anywhere near it. And I have never used the name "Satoshi Nakamoto" before.

I was never contacted by Nefario at any point, I was trying to figure out how to liquidate the remaining assets (which unfortunately were not worth much) when the accounts were frozen and the assets removed from the now defunct GLBSE.

Interesting that one of the loudest detractors was shakaru even as he was swindling me out of hundreds of bitcoins. I am not one to point fingers (and I guess I was way too trusting), but evidence came out after all this that he had stolen hundreds of bitcoins from other people as well.

Hey Peter? Since you are clearly still lurking here- how about a little restitution to your victims you scamming piece of garbage?

If only there was a way for me to know who to send restitution to? Seems that the GLBSE has disappeared.
1771  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] LIF.A, LIF.B, LIF.CX, and LIF.M on: January 28, 2012, 12:57:01 PM
Since the trading on the LIF.* shares has been frozen, I went ahead and paid out to the remaining shares at the price I had on offer.
1772  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] LIF.A, LIF.B, LIF.CX, and LIF.M on: January 19, 2012, 04:01:47 PM
OK, look, I am sorry we lost money. I am trying what I can to get some more bitcoins to buy back the shares. (Shakaru owes me some bitcoin, but I really dont know if he is ever going to pay that back, he had some difficulties the past few months).

If you are not satisfied with the price I offered to buy back shares, then put up a sell offer and if I get some bitcoins I will try to buy them back, I can't guarantee how long that will take.

At least I did not just announce that it was all a scam and run away with the hundreds of bitcoins that were left.
1773  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] LIF.A, LIF.B, LIF.CX, and LIF.M on: January 18, 2012, 01:23:56 AM
I will be closing the LIF assets. I have put up orders to buy back the outstanding shares of the LIF assets.

Unfortunately, we lost a bunch of money.

I have been selling off the GLBSE assets held by the fund, but it appears many of the buy offers were not real, and I was only able to recover a small amount for the assets held. Many of the GLBSE assets turned out to be scams.
1774  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] LIF.A, LIF.B, LIF.CX, and LIF.M on: January 17, 2012, 01:59:08 AM
I will be making an announcement tomorrow. I suggest any orders to buy/sell any of the LIF family of stocks be removed pending the announcement.
1775  Economy / Trading Discussion / Anybody else notice the exchanges acting funny? on: December 20, 2011, 01:48:27 PM
So I go to Tradhill and check their Market data, and I see this:
Quote
Highest Bid: 4.2000   Lowest Ask: 4.0999

Last I checked, if one person is bidding 4.2 and another is asking 4.0999, then a trade should already have been executed. Any insight on why this happens?

Also, on Mt Gox, I go to the Trade page, and they list similarly strange numbers: Lowest Ask Price: 4.03354, Highest Bid Price: 4.50000

Perhaps they are listing the high trade instead of the highest bid?

I bid $9.5 (That's about 3 btc)
1778  Economy / Trading Discussion / Bitcoin escrow services on: December 13, 2011, 10:40:07 PM
Anybody know of any? Have you used an escrow for bitcoins before? Have you used an escrow for dollars before?

Looking for review and suggestions. Any help appreciated!
