181  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to resolve overheating with sapphire 5830? on: June 27, 2011, 03:22:57 AM
What GPU clock, memory clock, and voltage are you running at?
182  Other / Off-topic / What's a "bleak" job today that someone from 1900 would be amazed by? on: June 27, 2011, 03:20:58 AM
I was watching some Sc-fi about a space debris team in which they're thought of as easily replaced, lower income workers compared to the rest of the space operations. It made me wonder if there are any jobs we have today that would simple amaze someone from, say, the 1900's, but we today would think is boring. Any ideas?
183  Other / Off-topic / Re: Last Person to Reply Wins 1 BTC! on: June 27, 2011, 03:00:12 AM
Yay! Alright, if going to sleep isn't gonna be an issue then i guess i still  got pretty good chances of winning Cheesy
Some clever individual is going to write a script that posts for him every 11.9 hours.

That's not a bad idea, and would be rather easy I bet. Just simulate a POST to where the form tags submit to ever few hours. Spam bots commence!
184  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: High error rate on Windows no matter what on: June 27, 2011, 12:54:19 AM
Is this when you close the laptop lid?

There might be some power saving issues popping up since Windows really likes to mess with power saving on laptops in general.
185  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5850 How high? on: June 27, 2011, 12:52:10 AM
Temperature and stability. My XFX5850 won't go above 850Mhz stably when being used as a "normal" computer and running a miner.
186  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Serious Issue with 5770 please help on: June 27, 2011, 12:50:55 AM
Have you tried "re seeding" the card, as in pulling it completely out and putting it back it?

You might also want to reformat and reinstall the OS again, since isn't isn't too much of a hassle sine you just did it.
187  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Advice for a mining newbie -- is it worth it? on: June 26, 2011, 10:02:04 PM
If you can wait a few months for your card to return a profit, then it might be worth it. But with electricity rates, you might want to realize that profit may be a few dollars, unless the trade prices really increase. Do remember that it takes a lot more electricity to run a computer with a 100% GPU load 24/7 than a "normal" computer running 24/7.

Remember, mining is a risk investment. If bitcoin prices tank, then you might be SoL. On the other hand, if they skyrocket, you might make a pretty penny. It comes down to your choice.
188  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: difference between all 5 of my quad 5870 rigs on: June 26, 2011, 09:54:37 PM
It might be the hardware's component's tolerances coming into play rather noticeably, since you have a lot of identical systems set up.

If you don't know what I'm talking about: All electronic components have tolerances that they operate under, since it's very hard to make them perfectly. Take a 68 Ohm resistor with a 5% tolerance. This means that it'll have a resistance of 68 * +-.05 when measured, giving it a range of 64.6 resistance to 71.4 Ohm resistance. What's happening in your systems might be that the processors, GPU, RAM, HDD, mobo have tolerances that they operate under, and they're adding up and being easily found since you have so many samples to look at.

It's not uncommon for identical electrical systems to run differently. That's why you see computer advertised with hardware, rather than benchmarks (eg 3.0GHz process rather than "opens firefox in 1 second").
189  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 2GB vs. 1GB GPUs? on: June 26, 2011, 09:40:24 PM
Memory size of graphics cards shouldn't matter when mining, since no textures are being cached while mining. If the factory clock speeds are the same, then it should have nearly same hashing speeds.
190  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Gui Miner Issue on: June 26, 2011, 09:34:48 PM
You're never going to get anything with that speed, and will just waste electricity. CPU mining is worthless at the mining difficulty we're at.

To put speeds in perspective, a ATI 5830 can put out 275Mhash/s (275,000Khash/s) depending on overclocking settings, and that's one of the cheapest "mining" cards out there.
191  Other / Meta / Re: Limit Signature by Lines instead of Characters? on: June 26, 2011, 09:30:05 PM
I wish there was an option to disable images in signatures (I thought SMF had it, but it's just a general disable signatures), since most images are annoying, especially that Goxed one. It's always nice to see small text signatures, though, since it's a good way to promote bitcoin related sites.

Do they realize that they have a interest on helping to keep BTC alive?

They probably don't want to have any association with bitcoin, especially with the way the news is spinning the BTC stories. It's probably not in their interests at all since the average computer OEM consumer doesn't know much about bitcoin other than what major news tells them (drug trading, money laundering).
193  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Looking for a mining platform for my miners to get 5 BTC, will share profit. on: June 26, 2011, 09:22:55 PM
Honest advice:

1)  Take $150 and go buy an ATI 5770.
2)  Take $100 and go buy 6 BTC.

Anything else is wasting your time (and ours).

You cannot mine on nVidia.
You cannot CPU mine.

Anyone willing to "sell you shares" will be doing so at the market rates, which are reflected above.  If you want BTC and do not want to wait to mine them, then buy them.  There are lots of sellers right now.

Great advice. I don't know why you'd want to rent mining rather than straight up buy. It's not like the bitcoins magically appear with 0 overhead costs.

195  Other / Off-topic / Re: This Forum is Looking More and More like 4chan on: June 26, 2011, 08:12:02 PM
Just because Canada can't handle losing a sports game doesn't mean the rest of the world is 4chan irl.
Name 10 differences between you and a canadian. We're the same people that split over 15.000 years ago from Africa. We have a lot in common. We find it easier to steal, destroy and deface things than to build them.

I think the main difference between America and Canada is that America goes to other countries to steal, destroy, and deface them. And our riots overseas last 10+ years. Top that Mr. America's Hat!  Tongue
196  Other / Meta / Re: The forum is now a liability. on: June 26, 2011, 07:40:03 PM
I think the Day of the Trolls was not as bad as all these ongoing Mtgox rant threads.

I like to clean my eyes with the Mining sub-forums, they're so much more tame than Bitcoin General.
197  Other / Off-topic / Re: What music do you listen to while programming? on: June 26, 2011, 07:36:45 PM
Most music will distract me if I listen to it while trying to program, so I usually go for things without vocals. Just lately, I've been listening to NIN's Ghosts I-IV and Maserati's Inventions for the New Season a lot. They seem to be a good mix of energy and ambience.

Strangely, listening to music has an opposite effect for me. I usually focus too much on programming when listening to music, so much that many hours will pass and I will not realise it. It was a good thing when I had an 8-5 job.

199  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My friend got 60 extra BTC from his Mt Gox account and insists it is not theft. on: June 26, 2011, 06:11:46 AM
I feel like there may be more to the story, since it's not too much in human nature to tell the whole truth when things like this come up. It's sorta like if your mom gave you $5 (she's so generous) for your school lunch, then you going up to her and asking for it again. She gives you another $5 through error, and now when you say you have $10 to your friends, you might say that your mom forgot and gave you $5 twice. What you really did was trick her into giving you more money than she intended, which is quite a "small" detail.
200  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mt. Gox to open trading in competition with churches around the world... on: June 26, 2011, 06:05:57 AM
I'd also like to throw in that Japan is like 14 hours ahead of Central time, so the real enemy of churches is the time zones and the fact that the earth rotates. I don't remember much from the bible, but didn't it say God created this earth, and so created this whole time zone fiasco? So really, the enemy of church is God himself. This God guy sounds like a real bastard, playing tricks like that on you.
