182  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: NEED HELP: I'M ON DAGGER'S TIP on: August 20, 2018, 03:28:11 AM
Try your luck in this thread of "Do you need 1 merit become member from Jr. member? I would like to help you". But I have gone through your post history and its filled with discussions in Altcoin sections where you have a lesser chance of getting merited. Don't go too hard on merits. Just contribute to the forum members by sharing your knowledge and always try to be helpful for other members.

Finally starting this kind of thread in B&H is not encouraged and this is not a good example for newcomers at all since I felt its same as merit begging. So always try to use the "search" function before you are going to start a thread.
183  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mastering blockchain - the free eBook on: August 19, 2018, 07:17:14 PM
Thanks JC for giving this tip and I downloaded Smiley. It's now only less than 4 hours to get free copy, so hurry up guys.

BTW I hope this Mastering Bitcoin book ( shared by bitmover) also very valuble one and worth for reading whose interested about bitcoin. I already completed first chapter.

184  Other / Meta / Re: Meta board flooded by account recovery thread ( ban/locked and hacked account) on: August 19, 2018, 06:21:38 PM
The ones you are seeing are ban appeals because they have to post that here.
I have also created similar thread few months back, asking about sub board in Meta for ban appeals. I think those ban appeal requests are cloging the Meta and Meta is not only for ban appeals, but for other discussions too regarding  bitcointalk forum. I also agreed with what "bitmover" suggested. In that thread what I got two suggestions from "Welsh"(Now he is in staff so maybe it's time to consider his suggestion) and "LTU_btc"  which I believed worth to mention in this thread too.

Link to thread>>>Subforum for account ban request

When an account has been ban then there is appropriate reason. As everywhere has an option to appeal bitcointalk has same. But I saw several post like above mentioned and saw that they do not get response. I think they receive a lots of message thats why cant response on time. In this case if there is a sub forum and people can discuss either ban is appropriate then people can report to moderator so that their work will less and they may concentrate on it.
This is why I suggested that the message displayed when you are banned be changed to contact theymos/cyrus to appeal the ban. This way it doesn't clog up the Meta section. It's hardly a public matter anyway so it makes sense to have it privately discussed via personal messages.

Anyway, 99.9% of banned users have no chance to be unbanned,
Absolutely right. That's what I'm highlighting. Why we are allowing to post those annoying posts asking the same question again and again by those 99.9% everyday whose already knows the answer that they get.
Almost all of these users don't have chance to be unbanned, but despite that, they have right to appeal. Many of banned users don't even know reason why they got ban and by making these threads they get explanation from mods. But maybe it would better to show reason of ban when users are trying to login in to banned account. Then we would see less ban appeal threads I think.

So I'm hoping these two suggestions will be seen by admin Smiley

  • Message to be displayed when you are banned be changed to contact theymos/cyrus to appeal the ban
  • showing the reason of ban when users are trying to login in to banned account

Regarding 2FA thing , I hope it will be surely added to the new forum update. Because we all agreed that to be installed ASAP.
185  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I wanna get merits on: August 18, 2018, 12:03:47 PM
How do I get some merits? And what is the advantage of a bitcointalk community member being merited?
Guy, if you make really interesting post or article about cryptocurrency world, I will give your merit on this forum. PM.
Yeah it's better to give those sMerits for the members who really deserved. This is the post that you merited lastly(actually its long way back in 4/19/2018 )Grin.

BTW why PM?
186  Other / Meta / Re: 2 MILLION users and their STATS on: August 18, 2018, 11:22:15 AM
Yes, i am aware of Vods great work.
But there is some important differences between this information and Vod's website. Vod's webiste shows that there are ~450k active users. If you compare it to number of last active users this year starting from Jr.Member, it is a difference of ~360k users.

How do you define an active user?  I define them as someone who has logged on within the last 90 days.
Can we consider active user as someone who has just logged on within the last 90 days but not posted anything? Can we get a clear interpretation for the active user from "theymos" or why can't we all agree on one definition? because it will surely help for the members who actually scraped user data for their analysis.

btw this is what I got from DdmrDdmr for an "active user"

I think this SMART CONTRACTS, simply explained... thread that I created will help you. Smiley
189  Other / Meta / Re: Merit? This got to be a joke. on: August 17, 2018, 08:02:38 AM
I also think that the merit system is good in theory but can be improved.
For example in the local sections there are very few merit sources.

There are 84 merit for sources with a total merit generation of up to 19500 sMerit per 30 days

84 sources for 2 mln users.

it's true that bitcointalk is now a mirror of society where the richer get richer, but shouldn't we be used to this already?
If you can live in the real world you can accept the merit system Grin
I am a member who always believes that the introduction of Merit system is the best thing happened for the bitcointalk forum. It's not good in theory but practically too. However, I'm not saying it's the best system and it also needs some tweaks like take actions against large-scale merit abuse, merit trading, demerit option where necessary, actions for hiding merit abuses when deleting their own posts etc...

I also agreed with "nutildah" that the fact there is no 2 mln, active users after removing bots and shitposters. I think those statistics can be provided by "LoyceV" or "DdmrDdmr". So your calculations to be revised accordingly that data too. Your argument of "richer get richer" is absolutely wrong. If it is true all the Legendary members should have earned more merits than all other members. But check the Merit data and it shows there are so many Legendary members are staying only with their airdropped Merits (without earned merits). I think you just felt system didn't work when some of the higher rank members more often getting merited than others. But the truth is they often make quality posts than others.

When I am looking to your post history it is more obvious why that you're not getting any merits. Almost all the posts that you have posted were in ANN threads. I think it's better to avoid those threads if you're really want to earn merits and contribute to other members by sharing your knowledge and post your suggestions for valuable discussions. After making so many posts in ANN threads then you're trying to blame the system by posting here and also making a thread in Meta too. I think you and you only to be blamed rather than the system.

Another thing that I believe is we need more merit sources not only for local sections but also for other English boards too. Because most of the discussions are going on mainboards since this is an international forum.
190  Economy / Services / Re: A simple bitcoin Q/A. Learn new and interesting stuff about bitcoin. on: August 17, 2018, 02:23:43 AM
Question: Explain the avalanche effect.

Avalanche effect is a property of cryptographic hashing algorithm. If small change(assume 1 bit changes) in the input value leads to a significant change(half of the output bits flip) in the output(hash value) we called it as avalanche effect of cryptography.

That way people can ensure that a person cannot predict the output massage by looking at the changes of the output hash. So this property brings more security for the massage sender as well as the receiver.

192  Other / Meta / Re: [Survey] Who has who on its Ignore List? (Second try) on: August 15, 2018, 07:32:11 PM
Great idea OP and this is what I have suggested few days back. I'm not a tech guy, but i know there are so many of them in this forum alone. So can I know my idea is viable or not?

We need a list so that I can ignore them. Smiley
Hey "JC" can I get your ignore list? I think you have the longest Wink

How about getting a ignore list of a well-established member and restore that file to ours like copying contacts from a sim card to another phone. Isn't that great? (just my thought only)
193  Other / Meta / Re: Merit? This got to be a joke. on: August 15, 2018, 05:04:27 PM
I personally didn't feeled good when all the Legendary members (espcially members who couldn't achieved much Merits after airdropped initial Merits) bound into a one group so called Legendary. Some of the brand names deserved more than that for their contribution towards forum. Just a suggestion.
There's far too many Legendaries right now and I think there should be a distinction to separate much older members and those who have put in the contributions to receive the merit as well. I dare say with the auto-merit distribution there's probably a lot of shit posting Legednaries that will get little to no merit so would be nice to distinguish between them.

@hilariousetc, you just plagiarised my suggestion Tongue - just kidding

Here is the list what I scraped from DdmrDdmr's Merit dashboard with my suggested requirement (Activity>1200, Merit>1500). How about this list for first Elite Legendaries

194  Other / Meta / Re: Merit? This got to be a joke. on: August 15, 2018, 06:28:56 AM
Holy crap... 2000+ activity should definitely be a new rank, Legendary just doesn't cut it. And 2000+ merits of course.

Or perhaps remove the rank name altogether at that level. Leave the newbies guessing who they're dealing with. Sort of like debadging a car.
No I think it's not enough, username also to be removed at least for few days, then only Newbies will know actually who are they dealing with Wink. Because those names are like brand names for bitcointalk forum. It's not about rank name, but the username.

How about introducing new elite rank for members having more than 1200 Activities and 1500 Merits. Because I personally didn't feeled good when all the Legendary members (espcially members who couldn't achieved much Merits after airdropped initial Merits) bound into a one group so called Legendary. Some of the brand names deserved more than that for their contribution towards forum. Just a suggestion.
195  Other / Meta / Re: Question: Moderator can lock thread in case there is proven scam or OP are ban. on: August 15, 2018, 03:25:28 AM
@xtraelv thanks for your consice explanation, but I'm not talking about banning the scammers.(it's like gray area wether banned or not) My only concern is why mods are not choosing the easy way to avoid spam but choosing the hardway (consuming lot of times) by allowing first place to post and then moderate post by post.

What would be the mods response if I report one of that post by giving proofs of scam? Is that remain unhadled or marked as bad?
196  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: CRYPTOCURRENCY GLOSSARY WITH 100+ CRYPTOCURRENCY TERMS EXPLAINED on: August 14, 2018, 05:00:34 PM
Good work OP and hopefully you can find missing ones from this Terminology of bitcoin thread. Smiley
197  Other / Meta / Re: Disable delete option from merited post. on: August 14, 2018, 03:27:24 PM

We still know who you sent it to and how many you sent - we just don't know the content of the post.

Although I given answer there, but I think subject should be highlight. If some one abuse merit system and after got merit just delete the post, We will not find the content actually it was deserved merit or not.
You can find so many redundent replies in ANN threads and got Merited heavily (some cases 50 Merits). So what we are going to do when we found the content of posts are doesn't deserved to be Merited?

Since Merit abuse is didn't moderated by mods or staff, there's nothing to do about these kind of incidents and we had to accept the common answer that given everytime,
There is a limited amount of merit someone can merit themselves unless they have a source in their pocket.

Usually DT never tag for merit abuser if case isn't with clear and strong evidence.
As far my knowledge DT members never(not usually) tag merit abusers, if there is any clear cut case with strong evidences. I have seen only once theymos reversal the merits from a account where got hacked.

^What is a service merit and what new forum guidelines are you talking about?
@theyoungmillionaire I'm also really frustrated with bolded parts, is there anything that I missed recently Huh explains me with examples too Smiley
198  Other / Meta / Re: [RUPL] Ranking-Up Pipe Line of Forum Members on: August 14, 2018, 01:55:49 PM
<...snip...>

I don't think you understood how Merit system works. When I looking to your profile it's full of underworld bounty reports. If you ever contribute to the forum or do you ever shared your knowledge with others? If so I'm more than happy to give you the first Merit. So post your best shot for me or other members.

However you better to "read" sticky notes in the boards and always try to use "search" function before posting.
199  Other / Meta / Re: Make links posted by Newbies unclickable. on: August 14, 2018, 01:32:09 PM
It's not so sweet for the legitimate newbies, but I'm quite sure a small sacrifice for the better of the community is okay here. If a newbie really wants to post a clickable link, for an ANN, Bounty, Service, or something else, they could simply purchase the Copper Membership...
I don't agree with your statement. Because putting restrictions will never solved the problem and also theymos is not a fan of putting restrictions unless it really required. Your argument is like putting restrictions only on people who are not willing to pay few bucks for posting, but not with the newbies who having few extra money for buying copper membership. Is that mean are we allowed to post any phishing links/malware links for members having copper membership? No way.

However I don't think theymos will allowed to remain any loopholes( like copper members can post any url) if he decided to restrict putting links with posting for newbies.
