I simply can't get my head around why Evan worded the "Darksend - Security Bulletin " the way he did.
Why why why??

Because it's honest?

I'm talking about being conservative with the truth, as opposed to the complete opposite.
It could have been spun any number of ways. I would have gone for "exhaustive thoroughness in the interests of security".

He's not sugar coating : PoH, proof of honesty  Cheesy

I'm not 100% against the idea of subscriptions, i guess the foundation can do its bit and get some T&Cs together and limit the network's liability to the fee - you would have to agree to the T&Cs before you could use the service.

But, its moving away from the idea of cash and into the concept of banking.

The "subscription" could be paid to the miners. In that case, you're paying the mining fees, just all at once. That gets us pretty close to how it works currently.

Solution 3:

Pay per round of Darksend, in a separate transaction, paid directly to the miners as a fee. The masternodes would hold on to them and publish them later on. To double spend attack this, you would need to pay the miners more fees, so it's impossible to double spend against and it's timing attack resistant.

I like the solution #3.

Fees for Darksend time seem less useful than fees for Darksend amounts. Depending on how many people are anonymising their DRK, 24hrs may or may not be enough, but if you could pay a fixed fee upfront to anonymise a fixed amount of DRK, that would be better IMO.

the fees are so cheap....just lose them - make it a feature and benefit of the service.

paying for instant transactions is where the money is at - doesn't matter if they are related or not.  instant transactions are facilitated by master nodes. pay them.

They exist to avoid sybil attacks.

its been a while since I've had to think about this stuff.....isn't that the job of the 1000DRK?

No that's for snooping attack.

Quote
Whereas a Masternode snooping attack involves a malicious Masternode, a Sybil attack — also known as a pseudospoofing attack — involves malicious Darksend+ peers.

Just not sure about the fee for a period of time

Me too.

Why? So you pay 0.05DRK when you want to mix, then you mix how ever much you want. If your client goes over 24 hours, it'll spend another 0.05DRK to keep going. It eliminates the timing attacks and double spending attacks.

Hard to implement no ? How about paying a (one time) fee randomly to one of the masternodes involved in the rounds ?

EDIT : hmm no the first round's masternode.

70% MN 30% Dev fund ? Or something like that.

I think I'm in favor of hard-forking the network to make Darksend transactions completely free. So there will be no fees to track at all. Instead of the miners, they could pay either the masternode network (the one you connected to even), the development fund, foundation fund, etc. These payments would be passed to the masternode and could be cashed later to avoid timing analysis. Another upside to this is it's impossible to do in Bitcoin and the fees could be MUCH lower than 0.0125. Thoughts?

Sounds great IMO.

We are not blinded (see the episode about the merging)  Wink

Spit it out. None of that 'speaks with forked tongue'.

No forked tongue there lol the italic part is just an edit. It sounded first like "we are (falling into a cult)"
Just to say that the community was pretty vocal against it and not like "If he says it that's the best solution".

That's funny how we are still laughing at funny wallet designs while Evan is pretty much is saying: "You are screwed if you use Darkcoin for any 'dark' purposes until i push a fix" Cheesy Or are whales keeping the people distracted on purpose while they are moving their Darkcoins to the exchanges for dumping? lol

It's complete and utter trust that the DRK team will resolved the issue, coupled with being happy that bugs are being found when they should be found...

+1
It's indicating that the Darkcoin team and community are pretty thorough.

We ate so much shit that we're pretty bulletproof now.. Let's be careful not to fall into a cult though Smiley

Not saying we are, but fair criticism should still be welcomed. I'm glad the bug was found, and I know others might be found in the future - this coin is, after all, pretty young, and Evan is fighting on so many fronts (Masternodes, darksend, instantX,..).

I'm not worried at ALL, but let's keep an open mind!

I truly feel the name Darkcoin is going to forever diminish the possibility of mass adoption.

 Cheesy

The name Darkcoin is one of the main reasons we have been successful so far. It ignites debate and keeps us relevant, the media likes stories that sell and Darkcoin gives them just that.  Passion positive or negative is good, indifference is the enemy.

The very first contact I had with Darkcoin back in Jan/Feb was looking at insane volumes on Cryptsy and working out it was one of the most unprofitable coins to instamine, which is why I couldn't understand why there was such a high hashrate.  Then I came to this ann and an image I never forget was the first thing I saw, it was a picture of a house burning down, insinuating a house full of scrypt mining rigs and the caption was "x11 runs cooler"...

When x11 first came onto the scene, the fact your rigs ran so cool had just as much to do with stirring the imagination as the name Darkcoin.  The two of them went really well hand in hand, because it's usually nice and cool in the Dark...

Love that meme maker!

So what is special about this?
You're doing illegal things. If you use fiat, or Bitcoin they will come for you if they find out about it.

True.

To sum up recent events of DRK:

1) Leak of possible merge between DRK & SDC, discussed by the community, Evan pulled the plugs. (cancelled)

2) Rumor of OKCoin.com adding DRK on their (FIAT) exchange.

3) DRK featured on FOX 26 news (6-nov-2014):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YQnYpc52ks

4) DRK discussed on Bloomberg TV (6-nov-2014):
http://www.businessweek.com/videos/2014-11-06/can-bitcoin-stocks-hold-up-against-the-feds

5) Evan testing first InstantX (INSTANT) transaction successfully in ~2 SECONDS:
I just got multiple masternodes to form consensus, lock inputs, literally took 2 seconds to lock the transaction in place... then I tried to spend the same inputs for a higher fee. Works!

2014-11-07 01:13:18 ERROR: CTxMemPool::acceptableInputs()::InstantX : invalid transaction, conflicts with existing transaction lock CTxIn(COutPoint(365de7e2831dc8b85c2c94fef5f2b98e86a95e301879c5b3460db69df757deb9, 0), scriptSig=3046022100e2ca0a35ab1373)

6) Enforcement enabled, 100% compliant:
Enforcement is a success! We officially have 100% payment compliance and no forks on the network anywhere.

7) Darkcoin v0.10.15.21, bloom filters (-90% outbound traffic), load reduction of ~70%:
Darkcoin - v0.10.15.21

If you are running a masternode on a VPS, I highly suggest you update to 15.21. This update reduces outbound traffic by 90%+ (which is what amazon charges for) by implementing bloom filters. Also load has been drastically reduced by about 70%.

https://darkcointalk.org/threads/v10-15-onyx-release.2683/

PS. Enforcement is on, everything looks good  Smiley

8 ) Confirmed: Evan will be speaking at the Virtual Crypto Convention.

9) First InstantX Demonstration Ever:

That market has started rallying again.

I thought that last high of 85 was going to be it but the action's just sparked up again and we're already up to the 2nd biggest 15 minute volume spike for several hours.

Looks like a short term triple top here to me. We're due for a pullback of 10%. This is all healthy, normal retracement stuff.

Now lets see traders play this and be unable to get their position back.

Head and shoulders pattern in play here now. Break of 0.008 targets 0.0075 in the short-term.
If it was that easy to predict ... All those predictions are made ceteris paribus, however some variables like the (increasing) media exposure, the (increasing) interest for the tech (instantX etc.) can have a positive impact on the price, bringing a new time high for Darkcoin.

No one has ever sourced a darksend transaction. It's been publicly audited by a security expert, ironically it's the same one who you link to.

http://blog.anonymousbitcoinbook.com/2014/09/darksend-paper-version-2/

PS. The audit came back clean, we've fixed nearly everything mentioned.

[...]

If you believe that, then you don't understand how it works. The whole process is off-blockchain, so there is no information left to source.
