182  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Hubs for Block Erupter USB AsicMiner on: August 22, 2013, 03:39:55 PM
USB 2.0 with the same specs would be better. It would be a bit cheaper and would work with the Raspberry PI. Right now the only hubs the worked with the PI, that dont cost a ass ton of money only support 6 or 7 BE's.

I think the Jan 2012 is a typo from BFL. Should be 2013.
184  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is Linux Ubuntu the most secure OS to store my BTC on? on: August 22, 2013, 03:19:52 AM
I used Ubuntu for several years, until they went with the Unity Desktop, which I hate.
If you are a Linux noob instead of of Ubuntu have a look at Linux Mint, which is still debian Ubuntu under the hood. Below is the list of distro I like for making the transition from Windoze.

Zorin OS (Debian)
http://zorin-os.com/
Manjaro (Arch)
http://manjaro.org/

I am running Manjaro on a VM and really liking it, but If you want have a more Windows like desktop Manjaro has a very simple clean UI and is very easy to use. I am anout to add it as a dual boot on my Windows PC. Zorin is the most polished of them all.

Running a live boot cd or a virtual machine to test various flavors of linux  is a very good idea. VirtualBox is a free program that is free and simple to use and try several distros, till you find one you like.
185  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Just starting out on: August 21, 2013, 05:36:14 PM
If you just want to get you feet wet, buy a few usb block erupters.  One BE give you about 330 MH/s.
Cost is about .35 BTC. It may not ever make you a profit. difficulty is increasing at a incredible rate.
Currently my BE's only make about 2.45 USD a day. Power consumption is not an issue. I am using a Raspberry PI instead of a PC and it draws only 5 watts.
186  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: my wallets were stolen just now, can any one help me? on: August 21, 2013, 08:56:37 AM
There should be a better solution then stop using Windows, how else are non technical people gonna adapt Bitcoin?

I work with non technical people and I convinced them to leave windows for good 4/5 years ago. Most of them went to OSX and bought macbooks, a couple of them chose Linux (specifically Ubuntu and Linux Mint, which I'd say are even easier to use than Windows). All of them say they would NEVER go back to Windoze.

Well good luck convincing the rest of the world, that a couple people started using Linux doesn't change the fact the majority of the world doesn't use it.

We need a save way to use it on Windows, that's a fact. I think the best way is to educate them to use some kind of 2 factor authorization (ie. password + mobile phone), that should keep most wallets save.

The majority of users only use a browser and using Chrome or Firefox on a Linux box is no different than on Windows. 260 BTC lost is a good reason to consider making a few changes. Lots of money is lost to thieves  from malware compromised Windows machines, but the banks and CC companies will replace your stolen funds. If someday bitcoins become mainstream and a common medium of exchange, simular protection are surely to be put in place. Until that day arrives it may be prudent to take some precautions.
187  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: my wallets were stolen just now, can any one help me? on: August 21, 2013, 06:28:08 AM
I am sorry for your loss. Most people here learn how to secure and backup their bitcoins the hard way. I am sorry that your loss is relatively a big one. But from now on it will only get better if you decided to learn.

- Stop using Windows operating system.
- Stop using closed sourced or untrusted sourced software.
- Stop being ignorant to healthy security practices.

What I found really helpful if you still don't want to do all the above in your daily routines, Do them at least in a dedicated device for your bitcoins. I suggest a small netbook. I think I should start a thread for that....

I agree with the advice given here. A cheap desktop or notebook running some flavor of Linux. Use it only for Bitcoin transaction and management. Windows is a malware magnet. A dual boot on a pc would work as well. I use Manjaro with is a arch linux distro, small footprint and very fast and secure. I use it in virtualbox vm and its offline unliess Im doing bitcoin stuff, I dont browse or use if for anything else, just to access my bitfunder acct and to move funds into. However I doint have that much to worry about.

Thanks - I am thinking about a butterflylabs unit 60 GH/S i have got a good price - is it a bad investment ?

Search the forums and you will see that BFL is more than a year behind in processing orders. I placed a order in April this year. I will consider my self lucky if I get it before 2014.
189  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hardware to get started on: August 11, 2013, 05:10:16 PM
i would start with an miner from these guys

http://ecommerce.square7.ch/
That link is most likey a scam. If you want to mine and not pre-order. AM Block Erupters or Blades is the oney way to go ATM.  Other than just buy BTC, you could also consider buy mining shares. I have been buying some Block Erupters and mining shares. I have some Addiction, ActiveMining and LabRat shares.
190  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: A case study in entry-level mining on: August 11, 2013, 07:39:59 AM
For all the naysayers whining about how obviously unprofitable this set up is - don't forget that it's not all about profitability for many people.

I'm in a similar situation. I overspent on a couple of USB Erupters that were being sold in my area in-hand, and am comfortably hashing away at a measly 660MH/s. I knew it would never be profitable, and I would barely make my money back on the hardware costs (a Belkin USB hub thrown in as well).

However, I'm interested in the BTC ecosystem and hardware, and wanted to have a try at getting everything set up as a hobbyist. Hobbyists are good for the network, and good for general adoption and uptake by the public. For what it's worth, for a while there I also ran a Tor relay via a small AWS instance at a loss, simply because I think the network has value.

I'm getting so sick of pre-orders and PCB diagrams on websites, the draw of hardware that was actually delivered was too strong!

Solid thread OP...

naysayers :O were there some of those? havent read through them all, tbh, its not all about profit, and most of it is just for the fun of it, but making some nice money on the side mining TRC to BTC is <3 (trc on average over 1 month is 20% more profitable, and up to 400+% iirc)

Prices are really dropping on Asic Miiner gear. I have just order a few more for .38 BTC. I am into more for the hobby. I am really temped to get a Blade with the new pricing I am seeing.

I just paid .55 for 4 Block Erupters, on the Elgius site, a few hours ago, hopefully I can get an adjustment.
Wow these thing were almost 3BTC a couple of months ago.

194  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: A case study in entry-level mining on: August 06, 2013, 09:24:21 AM
I have some BTC in Activemining, and Addiction shares. Right now I am putting the  BTC made by my 5 Block Erupters into Activemining, I also think LabRat mining looks attractive. You can do your own due diligence. I may buy a few more Block Erupters, but It may make more sense to buy mining shares. I have decided to do both, with more fund going to mining shares and a lesser amount into BEs.

Do those fans really help?  Or if you had it to do over again would you have bought something different for cooling and used the 10th port for an extra 333

The fans do help. The BE's get too hot to comfortable hand with your bare hand. With just a little active cooling, they are warm to the touch but not hot. In most cases you cant use all of the available ports. Must of the hubs I max out at about 3amps. Each BE requires 500ma. So the mak on the D-Link would be 6. 6 x 500ma = 3amps. The determinate factor is the total amperage, no matter the port count. For stability its a good idea to leave a little headroom. If not you may have more hardware error or you miner might shut down. Since I took the photo of my setup, I moved the usb fan and have six block erupters and the 7th slot is open. With the fan in the last open slot, I found that during a restart that 5 miner would start, but the 6th, had to be pulled and reinserted to make it go.

The d-link outputs up to 3A which is enough to power 6 ASICs, but not an additional fan. It's also very physically difficult to get the fan to fit when it's plugged into the hub. I recommend getting an extra USB power supply for the fan.

My D-Link will run  with 6 block erupters and a usb fan. However I  did notice that if I rebooted the R Pi with the 6 BEs and fan, only 5 of the erupter would start up. I would have to pull and reinsert the 6th, then it would start up. Or start up the BEs, then add the fan last.  That tells me I was at the upper limit of the power available. I moved the fan to a second usb hub and now I can power down and restated without the need to hot plug. Even tho you can run 6 BE's and a fan, It may be best to run without the fan in the seventh port.

D-Link does work nicely with the R Pi. I have six BEs and a USB fan, working without issue.
