someone will try, and it will be an interesting test on the effectiveness of mixers vs. blockchain analysis. Governments will actually try... because if you can have unlimited transaction codes.... the transaction codes are used by people. And the problem is you don't have infinite people. And if they attach a name to each transaction in some weird secret data base... they will know who gave who what.. So basically we can just say we are in some information war that hasn't started on full scale in bitcoin land just yet. *Edit: A solution would be to create for now like 100 wallets for each BTCitcoin available. In this way they will not have any idea who owns what when they start the information war. *Edit2: Example... A merchant has a security camera and the government knows of the bitcoin accepting store because they have a big sing outside "We accept bitcoin!" ... And they will say... we want you to show us your transaction number... and then they can track and have surveillance on that merchant of all the transactions that he accepts.. then the government authorities will come and take footage from the surveillance cctv ... And they will start identifying users that used those transactions on the respective time stamp. And that's how they start creating them databases. *Edit3: And then the next step will be imposing taxes on those people. |

That's why I wish I could buy right now. 195k bitcoins are now gone from the exchange. They will likely not be spent or cashed out for years due to so many eyes on those coins. I can see the address where my bitcoins are sitting.
So...all of those bitcoin traders from BitFinex will need to get more bitcoins with smaller supply.
As far as BitGo...from what I could tell on reddit, there were two setups. People who verified their identities and had a BitGo setup. And the rest who did not go through verification and had some other setup. I did not do any of that verification.

I came here to read all those "haha, you all are stupid and shouldn't use exchanges anyway!" posts and wasn't disappointed. Anyway, good luck with raising a multi billion dollar market cap with localbitcoins and alleyway dealers, selling bitcoins from the trunk of their car Hahaha .... "trunk of their car" part was excelent!!! ... But you should know that more and more people are starting to be educated on things and issues as programming software and closed system technologies. I had 31 BTC on Bitfinex. It was likely one of the hacked addresses. I hope they compensate all of the stolen coins. Though to do that they probably lose more money than they have which requires that they go fractional reserve which also means they eventually become Mt Gox 2.0.  They probably need to act fast on buying back the coins then... Since the price seems to be heading towards a new pump and a new bubble.  My condolences! |

Is there a bitfinex replacement out there that offers leveraged trading to North American customers?
Dunno... But I recommend exchanges that require you a ton of personal information and that don't keep the coins or fiat on the exchange... and need like 10 security verification protocols. At least those are safe if you are not afraid of the government, and if those countries have permissive laws towards bitcoin... Try to find a country that actually plans to encourage BTCitcoin. (*Edit: This if you want to be a trader... if you want to just buy for your personal stash&hold, you can just buy from one of the mainstream exchanges I guess.) |

JJG, tell me you weren't hodling on an exchange?!  I'd suspect that BitFinex is insolvent, though I definitely don't know for sure. Still, I recommend withdrawing everything as soon as possible.
