2041  Economy / Marketplace / Any reason NOT to use trailing stop? on: April 22, 2014, 12:35:59 PM
Hi,

The more I read about trailing stop orders, the more I like it. The main issue is that most exchanges don't support it (out of kraken, bitfinex and, once volume reaches a reasonable level, swaphole.com).

I din't see much reason no to use it (when it is available). Here my list:
1. Extra fees (kraken doesn't charge extra AFAIK, but swaphole does - bitfinex I don't know)
2. Overconfidence, feeling of complete security (although I don't think this is really an issue)
3. Potential miss of money in case of a quick rebound, like the picture above (trailing stop to sell will miss the second line - it of course depends on the percentage on your trailing stop). This also holds true for a trailing stop to buy, just reverse the chart)
4. Generalisation of trailing stop may lead to lower volatility (but this is not something, as an individual, we can do something about in one way or another)

Do you validate these reasons? Do you seen any other reasons not to use trailing stop?

Thank you.

Edit: some other readings regarding trailing stops which corroborate my opinion (I hope I avoided confirmation bias)

Stop-loss orders enable you to cut your losses and walk away from a stock before it swallows your savings in its downward spiral.

Trailing stops go a step further - not only do they safeguard against excessive loss, but they also help preserve your profits.

Sure, it's true that if you are diligent in using stop-loss orders, you can be "stopped out" of what could end up being a very good stock - if the stock takes a temporary nose-dive. But you can always buy back in (buy setting up trailing stop to by, for instance.

http://www.investopedia.com/articles/trading/08/trailing-stop-loss.asp
An example of this concept is to have a stop loss set at 2% and the trailing stop at 2.5%. As the price increases, the trailing stop will surpass the fixed stop loss, making it redundant or obsolete. Any further price increases will mean further minimizing potential losses with each upward price tick. Initially, the stock was given some flexibility with the staggered values, so it could establish a level of support. By doing this, you can trail a stock's price movements without getting stopped early in the game, and allow for some price fluctuation as the stock finds support and momentum. Be sure to cancel your original stop loss when the trailing stop surpasses it.

Market makers are fully aware of any stop losses that you place with your broker and can force a whipsaw in the price, bumping you out of your position and then running the price right back up again. If you like the stock, you can always buy it back.

How far behind should you place the trailing stop?
For longer-term investors, 25% is about right.
For short-term traders, 15% is closer to ideal.

Added
- On the deposit/withdrawal window, clicking on the Current balance selects the whole of it in Amount (like at Mintpal).
- When the  "not enough funds!" message appears, add a second line: "maybe you forgot to unlock XXX %currency%?". I believe that would help people and reduce the amount of mail you'd receive.

The problem with all these variants is the issue of hijacking and confusion. If you don't own the main names, someone else does, and that's a problem.

I agree it makes no sense to discuss the new name on a public forum, but if there is agreement on moving forward with a new name then it should be discussed in private among those interested in helping to choose one.

Again, using any ICANN sanctioned domain is pointless because the domain can be seized and the coin can be maliciously forked.
Do you know any non-ICANN sanctionned domain name that the general public can have access to?

Read this from honeypenny https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=577267.msg6329851#msg6329851

Either commitment (good) or scam (not good).

Considering how premine (which is supposed to go in the same direction) is considered in the cryptocircles, this initiative may be unsucessfull. Anyway, interesting to read.

what about bitmone.ro , or bitmonero.net ....?
Whatever the name change, it should not be discussed on a forum.

I don't understand. You've given a number (10%) but also said it can be changed by miners. Is 10% the default that miners must deliberately change?
I guess it is similar to NXT where you can choose the amount of NXT for the transaction fee.

For me it's the privacy and being in control of my own wallet instead of relying on a bank or some crappy third party processor like Skrill.
Interesting thing, I did not think about it.

I didn't chip in for this one because I don't have an Android phone, what I can pledge though is 1 million mint for a Windows phone wallet. People rage about iOS and their stonewalling but no-one ever considers Windows phone!
dragonseer, could you maintain the list of pledgers the way beaverslayer does it for Android Wallet?
I just created the donation address for a Windows Wallet. Please anyone, don't send money before anyone steps in to for actually doing a Windows wallet.
Hence this address below is for information only.

Windows wallet donation address:

guys, i just saw something.
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-food-cycler-home#home
it can recycle food and that will become scrap. they raised fund but fail
i think the things like this is not less
we could make a web for them to fund, its good for mint and fund raiser, because they will get fund from all over the world!
Great idea!
Tomorrow announcement could be a step in that direction Smiley We'll need someone to take of this, though. Will either of you (or both) be interested in taking the lead?

Just wanted to make a note here that I have been moving some of my coin wallets off of windows lately, and so far, the Mintcoin wallet for linux is the only wallet I've looked at that doesn't need to be compiled... I just unzipped and double clicked the download on Linux mint and that was it! Great job!
Glad to read it Smiley Also, if you did not copy the blockchain  from your windows install, you can download the torrent of the Easter blockchain here : magnet:?xt=urn:btih:4a6c6d7915fa212c09f9d39524bbaa7c046efda9&dn=mintcoin-blockchain-easter-2014.7z (you need a torrent software to get it). It should make the syncing faster.

I'm uploading 9 photographs to the drive-folder atm. Feel free to use them for promotion or whatever, as long as you keep my watermark in the left corner untouched. /CK
Thanks lecristoph! Any caption text you are thinking about?

Edit: they are gorgeous! Could someone make something better than my poorly-designed template? They deserve a much better template!

Just to make sure. MpCuSzv7wRCNsSUsf8nEkvVRN3Z32SQcy3 - this is the address for donations towards the android wallet right ?
Would like to send 200k, also is this the best place to donate them or should i send them to the mintcoin foundation fund ?
Yest, this is the correct address. I sent Beaverslayer the list of received amounts and he will update his next post accordingly.

Run people nothing interesting here!

or stay in the shadow

Mint coin has been a huge flop, too many coins I think. It's down 80% from its peak value. I have a couple hundred mint just for fun, but not even worth keeping the wallet open.

Um... (nope, can't think of anything.)

Many members of this community have their Mintcoin addys in their sig - I would suggest that donating your "worthless" Mint to one of them, or to the Mintcoin fund @ MsKZ6xRSPJAVVJ7m1oZfNqVcpJ9MyvRzha would ease your mind.  Wink
If you send me 100 Bitcoin I will send you 100 Mint coin.

Following a discussion with zmija on IRC (#mintcoin on freenode) and also following several previous posters talking about this, I got an idea for marketing:

"Are you getting tired of adrenaline rushes when prices go up and down? You don't find this exciting, you find this stressful? You prefer to participate to a cause instead of being glued to your screen for some satoshi?
Today it is EarthDay. Today it is MintcoinDay. Slow, steady, sustainable"

Opinions?

I like that. I sold all of my "other PoS alt" 5 days ago, got out with a profit and bought MINT for them.
Well, honestly it was affecting my sleep with all the ups and downs.
I really don't mind having MINT staying at 14-17 sat, since I can get my gain by minting new coins.
Yes, the same thing for me. When the very first thing that comes to your mind when you wake is 'what the price of my coin is now?", you know there is a problem. I don't want coins to dictate my life. There is a reason why traders don't last more than 5 years and the ones who last that long call each others "survivors".

I created a magnet file for mintcoin's blockchain. A magnet is basically a torrent file, without the file Smiley Open up your bitorrent client, chose "open URL", paste the link (it may even be pre-pasted - at least with Transmission it is) and voilà! you should have the blockchain. I added instructions too (yes, I used 7Z because I strongly believe zip should be dead for a decade now and that in order to have zip out, we must stop proposing 7-zip archives, plus it the 7z archive is 10% smaller, at 260 Mb instead of 290Mb).

Just sold my entire blackcoin and whitecoin for Mintcoin
TO THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON
Good move, there is definitely quite a potential for grow for mintcoin. But I'd prefer mintcoin doesn't go to the moon - we all know what happens to coin going to the moon.
Steady is the way of sustainable development.
