2101  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Project Meshnet: Hardware for cjdns to enable new, censorship free Internet on: September 08, 2013, 06:16:58 PM
The key to getting a mesh network to work is the decentralized hosting of data.   Minimize the client/server communication and turn the internet into one giant torrent.   This would allow the network to scale to any demand.

Great, but an increasing part of the web is dynamic content which wouldn't really benefit from caching. For bandwidth intensive thing like streaming video it's better to support multicast routing.
Caching should be part of the protocol, if somebody wants it they can use usenet, tor or freenet.

From a usage/cost perspective it is almost always better to increase bandwidth instead of caching.
2102  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple starts to conquer the world from China on: September 08, 2013, 05:48:42 PM
I just logged on to Ripple for 1st time in 2 months.
It looks like there's been ZERO progress.

On github there are 234 open Bug Reports...
If your money disappears you just become another "Bug". What fun.

https://github.com/ripple/ripple-client/issues?state=open

From a software development standpoint this is actually a good thing. It means people are actually beta-testing it and reporting what they find out. And if you look at the amount of Closed reports it seems they are actually fixed!
2103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Project Meshnet: Hardware for cjdns to enable new, censorship free Internet on: September 08, 2013, 05:37:29 PM
From what I understand the point of a mesh network is the decentralization - if you have many users, taking down a few nodes won't help because you can just route around it - you would have to take down a significant percentage of nodes to disrupt the network. In terms of disrupting your signal, my knowledge isn't good enough to tell you how feasible that would be.

But in a local area such as a small town how many nodes are there going to be? Surely with only one or two possible routes it would be easy to take down. Very few in one small area are likely to be activists.

That's why modulated light communication is so great.
With radio signals in wifi and co it's possible to disrupt it with jamming devices, less so with high gain antennas but it's still feasible.
Ronja on the other hand can only be disrupted at the node itself or in a direct path. The only thing that really affects it is dense mist, and to my knowledge there is no technology which could generate that amount since it is built to handle natural conditions you might encounter.
It has several advantages over wifi which would be too extensive to mention here, the best of which is that it can work as a backbone for a traditional non-directed wifi network because there is no interference.
And 10mbit/s is only the speed of a naive implementation, in theory you can reach almost fiber speeds.
2104  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are my BTC safe in Mt.Gox? on: September 08, 2013, 01:12:36 PM
I think the Bitcoins in Mt.Gox are safer than the Dollars there.
2105  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple starts to conquer the world from China on: September 08, 2013, 12:59:14 PM
- an automatic distributed currency exchange is complete vaporware. It will require a lot more than technology to work, e.g. like liquidity.
Nobody is debating the necessity of liquidity in Ripple in order to perform currency exchange.
- debt valuation depends on the debtor, just compare mtgox and bitstamp USD credits now and you understand how this must be handled inside a Ripple scheme. If you were to exchange currency you trade credits with one debtor with credits for another debtor. Here is the econ theoretic argument - any tuple of debtors in such a transaction creates its on market, so the credits are not fungible. Liquidity will be very thin.
Again, I agree with you that liquidity is a huge issue. But if there is liquidity, I'm sure the balances for the most trusted gateways will be worth about the same. Ripple is trying to federate the existing banking system. Nobody today ever says: " It sucks that my Bank of America USD is worth less than my Citibank USD".

Really?
How about: "It sucks that my Bank of Cyprus EUR is worth less than my Bank of Germany EUR"
Seems like I have heard people say that.
The value of an IOU is proportionate to the trustworthiness of the issuer.
Any system that ignores that is broken by design.

The balances in the Cyprus accounts just shrunk, it's not like the actual Euros are worth less, there are just less of them.

AFIK the ripple protocol allows you to assign quality factors to your own trust lines to compensate for that risk.
2106  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Project Meshnet: Hardware for cjdns to enable new, censorship free Internet on: September 08, 2013, 12:50:52 PM

1.2 Mbps* max data rate, 1km max range

Any guess how fast it would be at the typical distance of several hundred meters? My guess it it deteriorates quickly and is prone to interference in a mesh network.

No that's not good enough.

2107  Economy / Economics / Re: Why does bitcoin hate fiat money so much? on: September 08, 2013, 12:28:58 PM
Some times a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Bitcoiners go as far as realizing that, all the money being created is lent to banks which in term lend it to society - with interest being charged all the way.
Eventually this on it's own has deteriorating effects on the economy since the interest keeps compounding, seemingly with no end in sight.
So far so bad...

What they fail to realize is that debt is sometimes not expected to be paid back. It is simply written off.
That occurs in regular intervals on all levels along the debt chain, with the result being that the system actually is sustainable if the creditors foresee their profits from time to time.
2108  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: September 08, 2013, 12:08:18 PM
Race Analogy: The person with debt "jumps the gun" and runs out in front of everyone else and gives the appearance of being a better athlete, yet he is not any better than the rest, and once it if finally discovered when they review the race....they have to start the race all over again...Once it is discovered that someone used debt and are not paying it back, there is a financial crisis and a "reset" of the financial race.

No debt not being paid is an inherent feature of the system, it keeps the interest from compounding once it is written off. Interest is actually an insurance payment against that.

I'm staying far, far away from it and encourage others as well.

Have a bitstamp account?

Ripple is and will be around, deal with it.

The July tend is all that stands before capitulation, so the evangelists will do anything they can to pump.

That includes hoaxes, publishing false data and bold lies. Take care... they have amassed an impressive army of shills.
Joe Lewis and eBay was just the beginning.

Watch out, your tinfoil hat is showing. Tongue

So what?

Suckers may buy whatever they want, even bitcoins.

Nice!

Even clarkmoody is on this? o__O

Well that's stretching it.
On the other hand the mtgox liquidity problems could be explained if the amount of seized funds were much higher in reality.

2117  Economy / Speculation / Re: So is anyone excited about eBay endorsing Bitcoin? on: September 07, 2013, 03:30:29 PM
I don't think it would make sense for them to really allow the trade of virtual currencies anyway. They aren't an exchange. You can't buy Euros with USD (as far as I know) on the site, so why bitcoin?

IIRC there were silver 10euro coins which people stockpiled and sold at a premium after their metal value did rise above face value. But you have a point, the currency section is strictly for "collectibles" and it's hard to argue about something distinct which can be collected in the case of Bitcoins. If you were to sell an Euro money transfer for Dollars you would have similar problems.
2118  Economy / Speculation / Re: So is anyone excited about eBay endorsing Bitcoin? on: September 07, 2013, 02:42:58 PM
They are considering adding a new category 'virtual currencies' and they possibly might improve the trading of bitcoins on their website. (Maybe more secure for seller and cheaper for buyer?)

From the looks of it they have already considered it and decided against it.

<-- You can trade these instead.
2119  Economy / Economics / Re: Breaking news: Poland confiscates private pension funds on: September 07, 2013, 02:18:27 PM
The "Invisible hand of the free market"
does not exist in the first place at this moment because of all the regimes. Trully free market won't even let huge corporations and monopoly happen because they are way too ineffective.

I think that bureaucracy is the natural conclusion of our urbanized lifestyle and the dependence that comes with it and because it is an effective system for urbanized man. I think it only becomes ineffective with sufficient self-reliance of individuals and families in terms of providing for themselves out of natural resources.
In my opinion that is the end-game of technological progress, either that or we go extinct.
2120  Economy / Economics / Re: Breaking news: Poland confiscates private pension funds on: September 07, 2013, 02:08:32 PM
political affiliation and ass kissing.

Right, and what do you think happens in the management of these companies? I'm not here to defend the political bureaucracy here, but cooperate bureaucracy isn't better either.
The "Invisible hand of the free market" is the same Bullshit as the "Representative Democracy"

Bureaucracy always leads to the same conclusion and there is no point in substituting one form for the other, they're all bad.
I think there is only one effective mechanism to counteract it: De-urbanisation. I know that sounds inconvenient...

De-urbanisation? I agree that urban environments created the "wage slave" society we have today but what's the alternative you see? Abandon civilization to go live like primitive apes?

Technology and knowledge accumulated won't go away, and we are not mature enough to live a primitive lifestyle yet, although I certainly hope that this is the endgame. If we ever evolve to a space faring species it would be a requirement.
But it would be affordable to run a rudimentary robotic farm for the middle class now.

In my own interpretation of primitivism technology plays a vital role in developing a sustainable society.
