2101  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Will ledger go bankrupt? on: December 28, 2020, 07:58:29 PM
I didn't say it's ok, if you re-read you will see  I was saying worse things have happened (with some examples) yet nobody is shouting. The important point was nobody is shouting anymore after somedays and forget about it. The same thing will happen with Ledger

Quote
Why did they have all these unnecessary details?

For accounting or customer service or other things. According to the law, it is mandatory to keep invoices with customers' information and all traces of each and every transaction. It's all the businesses like that, it's just a matter of accounting using a ledger

Quote
Why wasn't it secured?

It was, but apparently, not enough, and a (group of) hacker has found a breach in the system. It doesn't mean the system wasn't secured at all

Quote
Secondly, Ledger either lied about the scale of the data breach, or they were completely unaware of the scale of the data breach until the file went public, and neither of those instill any confidence in me whatsoever

They didn't lie and had no reason to do so knowing that with the GDPR the company might be in trouble if Ledger had knowingly lied to hide the size of the incident. Not to mention the bad press it would have received.
It's just that Ledger couldn't evaluate accurately the importance of the incident, we can't blame them for that, they did what they could and even hired an outside company to audit.

Their business model is partly based on trust Ledger has no benefit in losing it, on the contrary.

Quote
They have made a series of significant security errors followed by a series of significant public relation errors regarding this data leak.

It was a strategic decision if they didn't communicate as the mass thinks they should. No matter the industry, rarely you will see a company communicating 'immediately'

1. 1 day or less
2. 3 days
3. 5-7 days
4. 14 days
5. 30 days or more

None.
When you go to the bakery to buy some bread, you need it in less than a day or next week? What would you think if you had to wait 10 days to get your bread? You'd say "I'll go to a different bakery where I'll get it faster" and you'd be right to do it.

It's exactly the same with a trading platform, if I'm not able to receive my asset within the hour I'll go somewhere else. After all, there are many other exchanges on the web. If I want to buy something right now it's because I need it now, not a week later.
I would not be encouraged to use such an exchange platform, to be honest.

@martina14

It is simple to understand it, can't make it more simple. The question is how long you would be ready to wait to receive your coins during an exchange process.

2104  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Anyone Else Been Locked Out Their Coinbase Wallet? on: December 28, 2020, 04:24:18 PM
@OP

All Coinbase's users located in my country have the same problem since last week, it has nothing to do with the account being suspicious, it's because of the KYC enhancement from Coinbase to abide by the latest country's regulation concerning the AML program.
Depending on your country you live in, you may be forced to do it and in some others not.

Was your identity verified before? Did you notice other citizens in the same case? Because if yes then you can bet your country enhanced too the AML program

Additionally,  ledger customers may hold significant amount of bitcoins, potentially good target. While Facebook users are not

As I said in another topic in the French forum, the risk is not so significant as people may think. You can buy an HW wallet as a gift to someone from your friends and family, as a reward for a contest. You may have sold your coins when the market crashed. You may have changed your personal address since
There are so many other things to consider.

Someone would take the risk to come to your home without knowing if you still live there, or if you still hold cryptos, etc? That doesn't make sense or the person is very very hungry.

It's a bit different since,
1. People know they operate by collecting and selling user's data
Selling user's data to advertising companies is different than having your server hacked and a list published to everybody. When Google+ had an exploit it wasn't selling user data, it was exposing them as a result of a security breach on their servers. The same goes to Amazon and Facebook.

No matter, even if we take the examples I posted earlier from the finance industry, it has to do with the money 'sphere' and information about people.

2. None of their product are security/privacy oriented

I can take a privacy-centric product as another example if you want. How many VPNs, supposed no-log, have suffered a data leak

The European central bank, the US Department of Homeland Security or the IRS data leaks are a lot more important than Ledger, with more possible damages
2106  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Disoriented Bitcoin User on: December 28, 2020, 02:42:57 PM
I know the answer may sound silly or too simple, but why not simply use google news with "Bitcoin" and select a time range, for example from July 2020 to December 2020.

You will surely find a lot of content to read. Boring news you read just the title and the interesting ones to read. By using the forum also, by looking at the threads and see which ones come up most often, you may notice a few trends.

Don't worry, the north is always at the same place, it hasn't moved since.

It's the Christmas holidays 🎅🎅🎅 and I'm a bit busy at this time so I couldn't read the latest posts. My life doesn't turn around Bitcointalk. I already did some modifications since, but I will update the original post in the next days, and It doesn't matter to me if the exchange is anonymous

On the other side, I did notice you're a coinbaazar's fan  Smiley

The most fucking backlinks I reported was like that instead of The most fucking backlink I reported was like that
You can't notice it while you read. Either you notice it by clicking on "quote" to look at the code directly, or by hovering the mouse over each word.

Code:
[url=URL][color=black]texte[/color][/url]

I reported so many SEO backlinks in the Off-topic sub-board. Most of the time I just need to read the title to be sure there is spam inside (VPN, streaming, Vacum, mother day,..)

By the way,

Discussion boards like forums are more often visited by google's crawlers compared to a blog or a static website. A static website rarely has its content updated, a blog ~every day, while forums have new content (posts) every x minutes. Bitcointalk is probably visited every xx minutes.

Spamming your competitor doesn't really work as it used to be 10 years ago, especially if your domain name is not young and/or established. Otherwise, we could send Forbes to the google sandbox. The algorithm is well trained to detect this behavior

...

I use this service long time and everything has been ok.
But a few days ago, I sent 7btc, but in balance I see only 4.5
I don't think it is scam, only mistake, I already wrote to support, but nobody answers me.
I hope they read this topic, please fix my balance!

They are considered to be unreliable for many people and your situation is not the only one, take a look at this topic from page #30 and you will see cases close to yours.

On the other side, the service was classified as a selective scam, and there are even unresolved accusations about them (see the user's profile). I won't be surprised if you never receive an answer from them :/

Yaplatu quand on argumente:

2113  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Will ledger go bankrupt? on: December 23, 2020, 06:24:08 PM
If people are able to forget about Google+ or Facebook, Amazon data leaks I believe they can forget Ledger's case as well. Yeah, you can say, it's not the same thing, not the same business at all. No matter, in fact, the result is the same.
Moreover, personal data is something you can even legitimately buy from companies, with much more information about what has been leaked from Ledger, yet I see nobody shouting even after they receive scam calls for insurances lol.

From the finance industry, whatever it is Citigroup, Capital One, Countrywide Financial Corp, Equifax, or even the European Central Bank is there a bankruptcy among those?

FYI 75% of the companies worldwide have already lost data. Most often due to human error.

Concerning Ledger, it's not even something that will damage the security of their products and that's what matters the most. Yes it was a big mistake, yet your coins aren't at risk
2114  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Localbitcoin FCA registration in UK on: December 23, 2020, 05:57:37 PM
Are you sure only businesses need to apply for this license? Because on the page here , it mentions "Firms and individuals". It doesn't mention only businesses and you're on the "individuals" side as an average Joe

I believe that even if once a week you're just selling your bitcoins bought years ago, you fall into that kind of category from my point of view.

- dealing with investments (buying, selling, etc) or offering or agreeing to do
You invested in Bitcoin a while back and you're now getting the ROI+profits.

This, considering you have records of all your Bitcoin purchases in the past, including date, amount, payment reference number. Otherwise, you have no proof it was an investment, and your government may consider the bitcoins falling out of nowhere and charge different taxes.
(I'm not a UK citizen, just suggesting)
2115  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies! Beware of using Centralized wallet like Coinbase. on: December 23, 2020, 05:34:07 PM
Criticizing a web wallet because it is a custodial wallet platform but on the other side using a custodial exchange not giving the private keys. How ironic it is. Things are not different for your information, they may also restrict your wallet at any time and they warn you about this. Your funds will also be gone to the graveyard.

If you wanted to criticize a web wallet because it doesn't give you access to the keys. We all know that already. No matter, everyone knows the risk of not having access. It doesn't make much difference in how it is used.

It is perfectly acceptable to use such a platform when you need to make a quick transaction for your daily purchases, instead of using a hardware wallet for example.
But just to be on the safe side you don't store all your savings on it. In the same way that you don't store all your coins on an exchange.

Version 1.5.1 there is an annoying bug.

The application doesn't detect the blockchain confirmation and doesn't update the trade process and stuck in a phase.

Bug in examples:

-Bitcoins are transferred but the application doesn't detect a confirmation hence the trade cannot continue.
-You're selling bitcoins, the buyer initiated the payment and you receive it but you can't confirm to then release the bitcoins. In another word, you can't finish the trade but the timer continues to go. After the initial delay, I won't be surprised if I lose my security deposit because I didn't respect the protocol (which I can't since the application is buggy)

I'm trying to resync the SPV file with the hope it does something positive otherwise I won't be able to do much:/
Coincidence, it happens when you don't have the time to take care of such things
