2341  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: recovering a wallet with wallet id, and some characters of the password, not all on: August 07, 2022, 08:37:51 PM
I found a old private key from 2013.  I want to double check it doesn't have a significant balance but i have only a few characters in the password.
If you have the private key, that's all you need and you don't need any password.

wallet id was recognized, private key wasn't, private key seemed to have some weird words maybe i wrote it down wrong.
Maybe, you are confusing the mnemonic phrase with private key.
Isn't that a series of words? If so, that's called mnemonic phrase, not private key.

2342  Other / Meta / Re: Is a user able to Trust/Distrust even when they are banned? on: August 07, 2022, 08:06:07 PM
--------------
It's possible that the banned user is interested in a service someone has posted about it and wants to use it.
As the banned user needs to know if the announcement poster is trustworthy enough, he/she should be able to modify his/her trust list.
2343  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Price at time of transaction? on: August 07, 2022, 02:39:19 PM
You can use blockchair.com.
It shows the value of inputs and outputs at the time the transaction was made.
It also calculates the "total spent" and the "total received" considering the value of the funds sent/received at the time of transactions.
2344  Other / Meta / Re: My Hero Member Account Hacked. please help on: August 07, 2022, 02:20:30 PM
Have to admit that there is a chance that I have changed the email account in BTT account some years ago (after there was some warnings or something).
In the case you have changed the email address associated with your bitcointalk account, you should see an email sent to your old email address regarding the email address change.
2345  Other / Meta / Re: Is a user able to Trust/Distrust even when they are banned? on: August 07, 2022, 10:30:00 AM
I only see LoyceV has data for trust list, not for trust feedback.
Wasn't Pmalek talking about stats on trust list changes?
As far as I know, it's not possible for a banned user to leave a feedback at all. Correct me if I am wrong, please.
2346  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I don't understand the seed management on Electrum on: August 07, 2022, 10:15:59 AM
Yes, but why ? That the question of my post.
Because the seed phrase (whether it's BIP39 or an electrum's seed) has enough entropy and you can't brute force that.

Because when I delete my wallet and recreate it from the seed (the 12 words), all the transactions appear as well as all the addresses with funds. That's what scares me.
That's exactly how it should work.

And I do a brute force, and the brute script tells me that the words : word1 word2 word3 are a valid wallet, it's over ?
If you manage to brute-force someone's seed phrase, you can access the fund. But the problem is that you can't brute-force the seed phrase.

Can you access a wallet if you brute-force its seed phrase? Yes.
Can you brute-force a seed phrase without any information about that? No.

What prevents a person from having access to the wallet?
Big entropy of the seed phrase.
2347  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum problem on: August 07, 2022, 07:24:55 AM
Same company.
I am sure you are missing something.

I just visited the website you bought bitcoin from to see how it works.
According to what I read on the website, for withdrawing bitcoin, you have to send them an image to prove that you own the withdrawal address.
How did you do the verification? Did you send an image from electrum watch-only wallet window?
Didn't you send an image from exodus wallet? That may be why they referred to Exodus in their response.
2348  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I don't understand the seed management on Electrum on: August 07, 2022, 06:24:42 AM
There are not many words, 1625 is not much when you know the power of today's PCs.
Currently, electrum uses a list containing 2048 words. The list you are referring to is for the old version of electrum's seed phrase and contains 1626 words, not 1625.

That's what I don't understand. If I test the combinations and find for example one that has funds, it's over for the portfolio, right?
If you find a seed phrase which belongs to a funded wallet, you can spend the fund.

It would be easy to take 12 random words from the list of 1625 words and test and then repeat and that several times per second.
Whether there are 1626 words or 2048 words, it's impossible to access a funded wallet.
2349  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to delete account? on: August 06, 2022, 09:26:56 PM
Take note you can't delete posts under few condition (such as thread or post on locked thread).
You can delete your post even if it's located on a locked thread.
The limitation on locked threads is that you can't edit your posts.
2350  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.3.0 Relased on: August 06, 2022, 07:46:54 PM
Another comment in that thread has me confused, unless I'm missing something; a user mentioned that he no longer wants to use segwit addresses.  Why?
Are you talking about the comment made by the user with the name of nbourbon?
If so, I think he/she doesn't want to use segwit addresses just because he/she thinks that it's better to use taproot addresses. I don't think that's due to a flaw in segwit addresses.
Maybe, that user doesn't know that with using taproot addresses instead of native segwit addresses, he/she will have to pay more fee for many of the transactions.
2351  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do whales keep their massive amounts of bitcoin? on: August 06, 2022, 06:49:22 PM
If you're using a non-custodial wallet and you have your passphrase in a safe location, that's it.
What you are talking about is called seed phrase, not passphrase.
Passphrase is an extra word or characters added to your seed phrase for more security.

the company to which the wallet belongs has zero access to your money.
You can't be sure of that if the wallet is close-source.
For example, in a close-source non-custodial wallet like trustwallet, you have full control over your keys. But there is no way to know whether you are the only one who has access to the keys or not.
2352  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I don't understand the seed management on Electrum on: August 06, 2022, 06:08:07 PM
Most seed phrases have an entropy of (I'm not sure how many words are used for the checksum so just found the entropy of the first 10 words): 1,298,074,214,633,706,907,132,624,082,305,024 (204810)
Given the method used by electrum for generating a seed phrase, even the last word contains 11 bits of entropy.
So, a 12 word seed phrase generated by electrum provides entropy of 204812.
2353  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I don't understand the seed management on Electrum on: August 06, 2022, 05:38:19 PM
I use Electrum since many years ago, and I've always wondered how the seed is managed.
Your seed phrase actually represents a random number.

I explain, if for example I test several words in order, Can-I find the seed of my wallet?
That's impossible.

If I find it, I have access to all the funds right?
Yes, the seed phrase is all you need to access the fund.

There is software that allows you to brute-force this kind of manipulation. I've never tried it, for fear of a virus, but even if they are surely "safe", is it possible that a software finds my seed?
You can brute-force the seed phrase only if you know some words. For example, if you know 10 words, you can test all combinations and find the 2 missing words.
It's not that you can brute-force any seed phrase. A 12 word seed phrase generated by electrum provides 132 bits of entropy and it's secure enough.
2354  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum problem on: August 06, 2022, 05:02:19 PM
i didnt know exodus existed.....
So, you didn't say anything about Exodus when contacting their support. It's weird. Because in the response, they talked about Exodus keys.

I have read all the previous replies, but I still don't know what exactly happened.
You bought bitcoin. Then you provided a bitcoin address, so they can send you the fund. Right?
Where did you get that address from?
2355  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum problem on: August 06, 2022, 04:25:11 PM
I'm more confused now.
Where did you create your wallet? Exodus or electrum?
Maybe, you created your wallet in exodus and then imported your address into electrum. Am I right? If so, you need the exodus wallet file or the 12 word seed phrase.
2356  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum problem on: August 06, 2022, 02:15:47 PM
I bought it from a leading  company.
If the only thing they gave you is a bitcoin address, you've been scammed.

thats so weird, i wrote down every seed every time i used bitcoin.
It's not weird at all.
If you have the seed phrase or the private key, you can spend the fund.
If you have neither the seed phrase nor the private key, you are not the owner of the fund. Every one can create the watch-only wallet you have.
2357  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum problem on: August 05, 2022, 09:00:06 PM
how can i check?
You can see all your addresses in "Addresses" tab. (If you don't see "Addresses" tab, click on "View" and then select "Show addresses".

OP, it's still unclear how you created your wallet. The wallet can't become watch-only suddenly and it's impossible to create a watch-only wallet by importing a seed phrase.
And please answer the question asked by LoyceV, above. Did you generate the seed phrase by yourself?
2358  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Which Wallet support multi seed phrase import? on: August 05, 2022, 08:34:20 PM
long story short, we have like 35.000 possible seed phrase combinations(with some extra filtering)
You can use btcrecover. The tool can be helpful to brute-force the seed phrase.
As there are only 2 missing words, it shouldn't be difficult to find them.
2359  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Which Wallet support multi seed phrase import? on: August 05, 2022, 08:14:38 PM
What do you want to achieve?
Do you want to have all your addresses in a single wallet? If so, you should import your private keys instead of the your seed phrases.
2360  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain every 10 min? on: August 01, 2022, 05:10:37 PM
(and if i'm remembering correctly, the diff retarget is also limited),
You do remember correctly.
The difficulty we will have after the adjustment can't be lower than 25% of the the difficulty we had before the adjustment.
