2361  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 51% attack on: April 21, 2014, 07:17:46 AM
A 51% attack would NOT necessarily mean everyone would switch to litecoin.

Instead, miners would just leave those corrupted pools and
join new ones not under the control of the dark lord of the sith.

And bitcoin lives on.

How hard would it be for a powerful entity to take control of the 3-4 largest pools to completely paralyze the network? Not very hard I would say if that entity has enough political will to do that.

Now, this would be much harder to do, if at all possible, with such a coin as Myriadcoin or NXT, as they have enough protection by design not to fall victim to such an event.
2362  Economy / Economics / Re: Does anyone else feel like Bitcoin is a safe investment? on: April 19, 2014, 02:41:25 PM
You are worried about your tiny stash of fiat losing 5% annually, while bitcoin swings up to 30% in a given day. Bitcoin has lost almost 60% since January 1st before rebounding to losses of -40%. Yep believe in the blockchain.

The value is all over the map because of the poor liquidity. This is exacerbated by what the miners create everyday. ie 3600 coins roughly every 24hrs.

Bitcoin is not an investment because it produces nothing. Buying a bitcoin does not increase total wealth. Someone else now has your fiat. You are basically hoping a future individual comes to take you out of the trade.

If you give an estimate how much fiat loses annually, you have to make calculations for bitcoin annually as well. So, let's say, January 1st is the date you pick for that, check the price on January 1st, 2015. You can't choose any arbitrary period less than 1 year and say the investment has lost or gained anything within that interval, because it'll be an irrelevant estimate.
2363  Economy / Speculation / Re: What spurs the next run? on: April 17, 2014, 08:41:19 PM
It went up too fast too high in November, it has to cool down for a few months. There are new coins mined every day that have to find buyers too, don't forget that supply of bitcoins is always increasing. Don't expect a new run for another 3 months, since the network effect has to work its way through the internet and has to sink in to people's minds, and don't forget that summer is a slow season in most investments anyway, people are on vacation. September is when things may start to pick up again. Sorry if that doesn't raise your confidence much.
2364  Economy / Economics / Re: STOP BUYING INTO ALT COINS , as you are indirectly hurting Bitcoin on: April 17, 2014, 08:30:59 PM
Altcoins are a silly and harmless hobby for people who are fools and/or eccentric.  They will never threaten bitcoin, in the same way that whittling, dog breeding, and fencing do not threaten bitcoin.

What would happen if a new clothing store opened up and only accepted bitcoin?  That would help bitcoin, if only a tiny amount.  Altcoins are bought and sold using bitcoin, and thus are just another thing that people can spend their bitcoins on.

This point of view doesn't get the medal of honor for short-sightedness, for there are even more short-sighted views, but it certainly ranks high.

Two guys were hiking through the jungle when they spotted a tiger. One of the guys reached into his pack and pulled out a pair of Nikes. His friend looked at him.

"Do you really think those shoes are going to make you run faster than that tiger?"

"I don't have to run faster than that tiger. I just have to run faster than you."

What I mean is, the right question to ask is not whether Bitcoin is a safe investment. The right question to ask is what is more safe than Bitcoin and what is less safe? Because there is no such thing as 100% safety in investing. There are things that are in certain conditions more safe than Bitcoin, others are not. For example, is the pension system in most western countries safe, more safe than Bitcoin?

Should be either a multiple choice poll or bitcoin is excluded, because as is bitcoin will win, it's a no brainer.

What makes you think bitcoin will go back on 400?

Because there is no confidence in this break-out to the upside, it looks like enticement into a trap. There is no big news that could justify such a sharp change of trajectory from down to up, which makes me think it's just manipulation, to lure and then shave price chasers. Besides, the price shouldn't start rising again much before June is here, if you look at previous bubbling up phases, it's still too early for that. In short, I don't believe in this rise just yet, it may still go up a bit, but stay alert, it can likely go down in the short-term.

Prepare for a dip down to 90 satoshi again as bitcoin goes back to $400, it was a bull trap, too early for new highs, we're still in the dire straits for a while.
2370  Economy / Speculation / Re: So.. what the hell happened today? on: April 15, 2014, 02:19:05 PM
BTC would never be world currency, it would be stopped long before that due to its design flaws. It's too tiny now and not worth squashing, but be sure, the 3-5 top mining pools will be taken over when bitcoin becomes something more or less significant. That's why Proof-of-Stake is the future if any of these decentralized currencies are to have any real footing in the financial matters a few years down the road. Bitcoin is just too easy of a target to kill, no gubermint will stand that competition if it can be nipped in the bud with very little efforts.
2371  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: I'm dumping Nxt and here's why you should too on: April 15, 2014, 12:44:56 PM
NXT solves nothing.  If they managed to rid the world of 51% attacks - I say bravo!  No go bust some ghosts too.  It isn't a real problem.

This is not a problem for bitcoin now, because bitcoin to traditional economy is still like a fly to an elephant. As soon as it gets too large and starts interfering with established order, the large mining farms (the only ones left who can afford to buy mining equipment) are very likely to be taken over and/or shut down and bitcoin network security and decentralized model will be compromised. What? You say it's not democratic. Oh please.

Some pumping, before a dumping.
Did you think only altcoins get pumped and dumped? Smiley

Doge I think is psychologically stuck at 100 satoshis atm.

Till the halving takes place, yes, that's probably so. Too much dumping is still going on by multipools. Fun starts in May.
2375  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 51% attack on: April 14, 2014, 02:44:10 PM
That's why diversifying into NXT, which is already now protected against 51% (and even against 90% when TF feature is completed later) attack makes perfect sense. Another one that protects users better against 51% attack is Myriadcoin.

In case anyone missed it, Dogecoin is now accepted at eGifter.com together with Bitcoin/Litecoin, which is a sign of industry recognition and will help drive market cap much higher, closer to that of Litecoin for starters Smiley

There is still huge demand, otherwise the price would have collapsed quickly, because millions of doges are dumped into the market each day. Imagine if there was no large demand, what would happen? The dumpers would quickly go through all the buy orders and drive the price to zero. This is not happening. What's happening is a slow retreat of the price, but when the halvening happens, there will be relief, because dumpers won't have as many coins to dump. Quote me on this in 2 weeks when the halvening happens. This is like the last 2 weeks where you can buy doges at the biggest possible discount.
2378  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DOGE] Dogecoin - very currency many coin - v1.6 HARDFORK MANDATORY UPDATE on: April 14, 2014, 04:46:12 AM

Look at the graph and tell us what happened at the last reward halving.

The hope for doge lies in it community and if it will stay alive during this month of china madness it will recover.

Well, I don't need to look at the past graph to know that Doge is still actively inflating, and I don't need to look at the past graph to know that each next halving is sort of ladder step after which inflating subsides. And inflating always means lower prices of the asset. Naturally, with each subside of inflating the price should gradually stabilize and as demand picks up or even stays the same as now, the price will have to grow to reach equilibrium with diminished new supply. That's laws of economics and laws of price discovery for anything in the world.

Community - yes, undoubtedly, community is what is driving demand. And I was talking about supply related to halvings. Or is it halvenings?
2379  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DOGE] Dogecoin - very currency many coin - v1.6 HARDFORK MANDATORY UPDATE on: April 13, 2014, 03:41:02 PM
After the next halvening when block reward becomes 125k and certainly after the next one in June (62.5k block reward) the supply of newly dumped coins will diminish and 85% of all the Doges will be in circulation, that's when the price will start growing. Hence the next 2 weeks will be hard, then it will get easier, and at the end of June significantly easier and 200 satoshi. Wafflepool and other multipools will switch to mining Litecoin exclusively and stop dumping millions of doges. Just hang tight, the bright side is near. Doge will be $0.01 this year.
2380  Economy / Economics / Re: The current Bitcoin economic model doesn't work on: April 13, 2014, 06:11:31 AM
Not everyone is holding forever for various reasons. Some people need to cash out to cover living expenses, some freak out like the past few days and sell, there is an equilibrium of sorts. Yes, bubbling and then popping, rinse and repeat, so what. Besides, other crypto currencies that came into existence since the original post are making sure bitcoin is being traded for them and spent at stores that recently started accepting them. This ensures people are getting less religous about holding bitcoin and developing more practical attitude just like to any other asset class.

People always tend to look at things as just black or white, but the truth is always somewhere in the middle.

What doesn't have characteristics of a ponzi after all?
