241  Economy / Economics / Re: How much BTC do you need to live at your level rest of your live without working on: September 17, 2012, 06:06:31 PM
[Warning: poster is batshit crazy]

I think bitcoin is hastening a technological singularity, so saving it for the "rest of my life" seems impossible to determine right now. I'll work until my services are no longer required, at which point I'll have to calculate what speed I can run at while living off deflation indefinitely.

[/crazy]

I understand how nuts this sounds, so when pitching bitcoin to people I kinda don't mention what I plan on doing with mine. Tongue

I like it. Smiley

Still, could you try to roughly estimate some numbers? Smiley
Just give a guess.

I'd guess that someone with more than ~100K BTC today should already be rich enough to live indefinitely, barring unforseen problems. But that's a very uneducated guess.

243  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Where to meet in Southern California??? on: September 15, 2012, 06:31:04 PM
So question for the group while we try to figure out if and where we can meet.  So out of all of So Cal we only have 8 people following this group?  I know I am new here but I would have thought that So Cal or CA would have more people chatting and or meeting.

I guess its a small world, for now.

No, there's more of us. Some of us just live in a city with crime, crappy gun laws, and packed with liberals... and we don't get a vote option.
244  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anybody but Obamney, PROTEST VOTE (thrid party) on: September 14, 2012, 12:33:46 AM
Be thankful you dont live in Australia where they fine you for not voting.

btw I have a large stack of fines sitting in a drawer collecting dust  Cheesy

How can they even enforce something like this?  Is it next time you vote they wont let you until you pay your fines?  Do the restrict your attempts to get a driver's license or something of the sort?  If they do nothing why even bother with the fines, its just posturing.  The government wastes 100's of australian dollars trying to collect 10's of dollars in fines...

If the USA did this, they would just pile on more fines for not paying your fines, wait until after it has reached obscene proportions, and then garnish your wages (if any) or arrest you.
245  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is ponzi? I give 0.05 btc to the best answer on: September 13, 2012, 12:43:54 PM
Thanks mate. Is it a kind of piramyd schema? Sorry for did not search it on Google, but I am in a really slow Internet now in my mobile (I am far away from civilization right now) I'll give you the 0.05 and if you can say more about this fraudulent schema I glad you. Thansk
Looks like the other guys beat me to it and explained it well, so whoever gets the reward is your call.
246  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is ponzi? I give 0.05 btc to the best answer on: September 13, 2012, 01:10:06 AM
"A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to its investors from their own money or the money paid by subsequent investors, rather than from profit earned by the individual or organization running the operation." - Wikipedia

Assuming you want more money, you should avoid Ponzi schemes because you are more likely to lose money than to gain money.

247  Economy / Economics / Re: cryptocurrencies and monetary supply (growth rates) on: September 12, 2012, 01:58:47 PM
I'd prefer B since it keeps the money supply relatively constant in the long term (lost coins), but it's such a minor issue that for a deflationary currency Bitcoin is good enough as-is. Bitcoin has convinced me that deflation is not a huge problem, but it still might be suboptimal.

However, both EnCoin/decrits and Freicoin have some good ideas, so I'm keeping an eye out for those. It's unfortunate that much of the Freicoin community supports mandatory payment to a central Freicoin Foundation, though.

Make ALL the coins! Let the market decide, because I'm sure not smart enough to.
248  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] 185+ BTC - Open Transactions Client (for Grandmas) on: September 10, 2012, 06:55:50 PM
I'd be willing to work on icons, documentation, etc as well. No charge, I just don't have enough money to donate what I think this project is worth.
249  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What about DDoS (Denial of Service) to sites that don't accept bitcoin? on: September 08, 2012, 12:08:10 AM
lol I am amused by this notion of a backwards protection racket

TAKE OUR MONEY OR ELSE!
250  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what about allowing an owner to lock BTC to an address for a period of time? on: September 06, 2012, 07:31:45 PM
All tx can go in the same block. 10 minutes later coins are in the last address.
Damn, that's true. I guess you could send each tx to a different set of independent servers, but that's still not 100% secure.  Undecided At least I learned something today, thanks!
251  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what about allowing an owner to lock BTC to an address for a period of time? on: September 06, 2012, 05:49:58 PM
To force yourself to wait at least X blocks:
Create x private keys
Create one offline transaction per key, sending the entire sum to the next address in series
Delete all but the last private key
Send the offline transactions to a bunch of different servers, all of which are set to automatically relay each transaction

That way, it's impossible to spend anything until every transaction has been processed, which will take ~10 minutes per key. So for 12 days you would need 24*6*12 keys.
252  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Romney's tax returns - first Bitcoin extortion? on: September 05, 2012, 07:13:13 PM
$100 million is feasible if you consider that such an enormous buy would raise BTC/USD. Hell, even $1 million would cause quite a spike. It raises the question - why denominate a bitcoin ransom in dollars? Does Romney send them $1 million in bitcoins as of before or after the purchase?

Seems like a hoax to me.
253  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Will Bitcoin be ready when it is needed? on: September 04, 2012, 10:15:33 PM
I think it'll be ready "on time" too. I find it very exciting to watch (and help somewhat) as tomorrow's financial infrastructure is built. We could build supernodes right now if scalability became a problem, and Open Transactions is showing great promise for derivatives markets.
254  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anybody but Obamney, PROTEST VOTE (thrid party) on: September 04, 2012, 05:46:22 PM
Then do I ever have the deal for you! Let's bet on it. If any third-party candidate wins, you pay me 100 BTC. If Democrats/Republicans win, then I pay you 0.0001 BTC. Since you're not just being hyperbolic to promote a political argument, it's practically free money!

It is free money, but such a small amount isn't worth my time. I'll do a bet of my 1000 BTC to your 2 BTC.
So you're so rich that simply posting a receiving address is worth a whopping 2 BTC to you, but you're so poor that you can't offer more than 1000 BTC? Why the higher odds all of a sudden? To make things easy, I'll even send you my 0.0001 BTC immediately yet patiently wait for you to save 100 BTC in the unlikely event that I win.

Assuming you agree that there IS a nonzero chance that a third party will win (like they have in the past), then increasing that chance is potentially worthwhile.
Value of voting = (expected benefit if win) x (change in chance to win) - (cost of voting)
Costs are gas money, waiting in line, etc.
Personally I'd put a HUGE value on removing the Republicrats from power, so even if the odds are very low it's worth doing.
255  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anybody but Obamney, PROTEST VOTE (thrid party) on: September 04, 2012, 03:53:42 PM
Waste of time. Third-parties have no chance of winning, so voting for them is pointless. Rather than wasting ~30 minutes voting, use that time to educate people about libertarianism (or whatever).

Voting for a third party says "I support this broken and corrupt system and this is who I want to be in charge".

Not voting says "I don't support this broken and corrupt system".
Do you honestly think a government led by Gary Johnson would be as corrupt or broken? Ask a dozen random people if they interpret low voter turnout as protest or apathy. You can send a clear message against corruption and inefficiency by voting for someone who will fight against them.
256  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anybody but Obamney, PROTEST VOTE (thrid party) on: August 31, 2012, 01:02:29 PM
.
I've been on the fence about voting third-party, or voting Obama because he's not quite as bad and it would count for more.  Thoughts?

Not quite as bad? You're joking, right?

He's broken every campaign promise, and jokes about killing people with predator drones.

sigh, I know.  I just can't bring myself to potentially help Romney win.

Don't let the Democrats trick you! The only vote that helps Romney win is a vote for Romney. When votes for Nader "helped Bush win" in 2000 the Democrats were quick to point the finger at him and his supporters, but then what did they do to FIX the spoiler effect when they finally won power?

Nothing.

They did nothing to fix the spoiler effect and never WILL do anything to fix the spoiler effect because it keeps THEM in power too. So when we say "lesser evil" or blame ourselves for not compromising with 49% evil, they laugh all the way to the bank. Obama and his ilk have perpetuated this dilemma on purpose... that alone should be reason to refuse him.

Yes, there's a .00001% chance your vote will "let Romney win" because you could have voted Obama, but it's a scam perpetuated by both parties. Just vote for whoever you think is best - if everyone had the conscience to do that instead of try to game their fellow Americans, we'd be living in a much more peaceful place.

And? Bill counterfeiting is a reality, and they use 2D printers. 3D printed bills with today's technology wouldn't fool anyone, you just can't get that much detail. 3D printing doesn't help with security strips at all.
Hmm. how long have you been trying to counterfeit?
I have about three years of experience 3D printing, but none counterfeiting. And you?
259  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-08-29 slashdot.org - Large Bitcoin Ponzi Scheme Collapses With a Loss of on: August 29, 2012, 04:21:02 PM
It looks like the Slashdot commenters are interpreting this properly - that all Bitcoin did was enable a regulation-free environment. Boo hoo a bunch of people got greedy and lost money, at least now I can't be forced to pay for a pirate bailout or a regulatory agency that protects me from myself.

I'll take caveat emptor over caveat omnes any day.
260  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Wiki Weapon on: August 29, 2012, 03:48:10 PM
I'm thinking about submitting this to their site, but this looks like a potential candidate for a printable gun:

http://heizerfirearms.com/ ...
Kinda cool, but the price... wow. I am going to also have to be able to print money.

something many have not thought about....3d printers......counterfeiting

can't print bitcoins Wink Wink Wink

Why would you need a 3D printer for a flat paper bill?

dollars have a thing called security strip inside
