241  Economy / Speculation / Re: Ladies and Gentleman, There goes $9 on: July 17, 2012, 05:50:27 AM
Seriously?  WTF is going on?  This makes no sense.

I sold some BTC is what. As history has taught me, the moment I sell something the price immediately jumps. The converse is also true. I try to use this power only for good.

This....  ^^^^
242  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin soaring, highest I've seen it since last year while it was decreasing on: July 17, 2012, 01:24:57 AM
You don't need Bitcoinica to short Bitcoin.
You do if you're not holding Bitcoins.

Right now, a person can only act on what they think is an overly high BTC price if they've already bought in to that extent. Similarly, a "true believer" in Bitcoin can only act on a low price if they have fiat lying around.

Futures or options contracts - or, alternatively, margin trading at a 1:1 ratio - counteract that, and let people who weren't confident to begin with act on the market when it starts to act (in their eyes) irrationally.

That's the theory, anyway. Margin trading at a higher ratio (such as the ones Bitcoinica allowed) could also allow people to just make very unwise bets and swing the market around even more irrationally than normal.

Ding ding ding.. we have a winner..
243  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin soaring, highest I've seen it since last year while it was decreasing on: July 17, 2012, 12:41:16 AM
Do you think taking out the gambling aspect (e.g. Bitcoinica) has to do with the soaring prices?

BINGO!

Bitcoinica if it was done well, and worked as was intended would have been a nice stabilizing factor in the bitcoin world..

But it wasnt..  clearly, and all it was, was an indicator and a tool to be abused, and abused it was.... heavily, suppressing the price artificially, and having mad mad mad algorithm failures, which in turn caused mass panic selling.

I for one am thankful its toast..  but I feel for all the people waiting on coins that Bitcoinica has stolen.   Yes..  I said STOLEN..
244  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 17, 2012, 12:33:06 AM
No offense to Gavin, but can we scratch him, and people altogether from the notes ?

Lets not make it about anyone...
245  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] bitaddress.org Safe JavaScript Bitcoin address/private key [BOUNTY 0.1BTC] on: July 16, 2012, 05:24:10 AM
Blockchain.info is pretty painless for redeeming private keys. You can import a key and send the funds onward within seconds of creating a new account and without having to wait for any confirmations.

Ahhh, that could help someday..  Thanks Casascius.. Smiley

But Im more interested in keeping the address created from bitaddress.org

I understand I can keep it through blockchain.info wallet, but hoping I could use it on bitcoin spinner, and or Armory..

247  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] bitaddress.org Safe JavaScript Bitcoin address/private key [BOUNTY 0.1BTC] on: July 16, 2012, 04:19:12 AM
Ok, I thought this would be easier than it is..

Can someone describe how to actually use the keys provided once generated from Bitaddress.org ?

I've tried a bit using Armory..     its a no go, it uses a different terminology for the "codes"

Why isnt this simple, and documented somewhere ?   Roll Eyes

To import a private key into your satoshi client:

0. edit or create bitcoin.conf in the same folder as wallet.dat adding lines that say:

Quote
rpcuser=someusername
rpcpassword=somepassword

1. run:  bitcoin-qt -server and wait for it to load the blockchain and start up

2. run:  bitcoind importprivkey 5Je4KHK15KobUcbj29xATN6z6QgZVxL4rYnBD2kaTzncS6oKmqL   (replace 5J... with the private key given to you by bitaddress)

3. wait 5 minutes or so while bitcoin-qt checks the whole blockchain for transactions containing your new address

Lmfao!

Are you serious ?  Undecided

No easier way? no way with armory ?
248  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Class action Litigation vs. Bitcoinica Consultancy LTD & Intersango LTD on: July 16, 2012, 02:30:22 AM

What exactly shall be the goal to be reached by legal action?
Please clarify!

  • (1) we want to destroy Intersango exchange
  • (2) we want to ruin Core credit finnancially
  • (3) we want to destroy the reputation of Zhoutong, Tihan, Donald, Patrick and Amir and turn them into "persona non grata"
  • (4) we want to destroy the economical existence of above mentioned people
  • (5) we want to force those folks to collaborate with the police to chase the hacker(s) and put them in jail
  • (6) we want to construct a case of precedence, so that in future no 17-year old entrepreneur without proper business education and governmental approvement can start a hightly profitable business.
  • (7) we want to get our money back

We want to make it clear we won't stand for the business owners to steal from us, directly or indirectly?

How many of these cons do you want the community to endure before we take a stand?  The money is already gone -make those responsible for losing it pay.

Amen brother..

after printing one out..

I think a bit bill should be the size of a folded bill..

And have it so that folded one specific way in half.. should hide the private key..

Like so..  think of this as each side of the bill

 ----------------
| X                X |
|                      |     - Front
 ----------------

 ----------------
| X                O |
|                      |      - Back
 ----------------

X's being the public addy, O being the private key..

Printing it like this, with a fold in the right direction can serve to hide the key until needed..  or even seal the bill shut with any tamper evident seal if made small enough you couldnt just look inside the folded bill..

253  Other / Archival / Re: International Shipping. on: July 15, 2012, 04:51:58 AM
I had a very long conversation with a UPS supervisor. I was rather upset about being charged a 100% tax on my "$40" Item..... The lady had the charge dropped to $5.30.... I left $5.30 at my dad's store to have the package delivered while I am at work. They don't take cash... They wanted me to purchase a Postal money order, a bank draft. or use a credit card when the package is delivered.. for 5 bucks....

I paid over the phone prior to delivery but the scheduled delivery date was Wedneday.. I got it Friday Tongue

Its criminal isn't it ?

Sad

255  Other / Archival / Re: International Shipping. on: July 15, 2012, 03:03:51 AM
NEVER EVER AS A CANADIAN USE UPS....

Regardless of direction...

Just trust me..  I have never been raped so badly in my life...

Thier brokerage fees are on the order of criminal..

Not to mention the shipping back to sender after 3 attempts, and no means to tell them to keep the item for pickup after it has been sent..

256  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] BitcoinSpinner on: July 14, 2012, 07:52:49 PM
Quick and easy question to save me some time trying..

Bitaddress.org can make an addy and a private key..

How would I go about making a wallet from bitaddress.org and importing it into spinner ?

obviously I have some ideas on this.. but would like to know the surefire way..

Thanks

Short answer:

You can't. BitcoinSpinner's "wallet" isn't designed that way. The one key it gives is all you can have.

Hmmmm..

So when I uninstall the program, and get a new wallet..  its not a new wallet ?

Because I've been doing this by restoring through QR code I've printed out..

Please explain further..

258  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: A public plea for help regarding Bitcoinica and my 24,841 BTC on: July 13, 2012, 09:57:28 PM
This is what strikes me as odd.

When the Bitcoinica servers were deleted, I wonder... "What's Rackspace's response to Bitcoinica's queries of 'we really need your help, surely you have a backup?"  Nowhere did I read the results of them pushing Rackspace for the backups.  You would think that if Rackspace doesn't keep backups for their own business continuity and that once someone pushes delete, data is gone forever, that that would be a significant public relations fiasco for Rackspace.

When 40k BTC and 40k USD moves somewhere, I am amazed that we hear nothing of where it went - no BTC withdrawal address so we can track the coins - and I'm genuinely interested to hear how anybody got 40k USD out of MtGox instantly when the usual wait time is much longer.  Why isn't anybody telling us "our history shows it went out as a wire" or "our history shows it went out as a MtGox code and MtGox has frozen whoever redeemed it"...

Lets all read this again...    Wink

259  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: A public plea for help regarding Bitcoinica and my 24,841 BTC on: July 13, 2012, 06:00:17 PM
Personally, it might not be fair to others that could potentially be ahead of Mem Dealers in line..

But, for the good of the community, and for outstanding characters like this, that have full documentation on funds in bitcoinica,

accounts like these should priority one.

Why should multiple bitcoin based business's suffer and potentially drown under the stupidity of Bitcoinica?

Also, I agree with Proudhon, this is looking more and more like a long con..

Coincidence..   I think not..

I'm in...no questions asked.

If anyone is in NYC and wants to discuss this, feel free to come by the Bitinstant office on 23rd and Broadway

Excellent stance Charlie..

I applaud this..    Smiley
