2481  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you sometimes think Bitcoin will fail? on: June 21, 2014, 02:25:24 PM
The last block was 38 minutes ago and that is "not ready for prime time" or usable in the real world......We are delusional, this thing is not working!!   Shocked[/size]

People wire billions/trillions through the banks and it takes ...days. So, even if it is used to transact a fraction of this volume in a few minutes time across the globe, it's still good. And remember there are A LOT of people that do not have access to banking services, credit cards etc on a global scale.

So is everything fixed already or we are still in the development phase ?

Development.

Alex, I understand you well, but ppl have also calibrated their expectations based on what they have read on the forums. If we rewind back just a couple of hours, we would see things like 99.99999% certainty and bullet-proof testing. I don't say the developers said so, but still, it was posted everywhere these last couple of days.

I saw that too and that's why I'm injecting doses of realistic expectations every now and then.

it doenst really help here that the masternode code is not open source for auditing.

Portions not related to DarkSend are open source right now.

Only developers?

Evan is not that stupid.

Can solve these errors when they want.

Note: I have a considerable amount of DRKs. So this is not a piece of shit. I told my feelings.

What Evan is trying to do with masternode payments is NOT simple and the complexity ensures problems. A large number of problems have been showing up on testnet for over a month and it's reasonable to expect there will be more problems on the actual network.

It's not like Evan doesn't want to get it sorted and take the coin to 0.03+.
2485  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ** HARD FORK JUNE 20TH ** on: June 21, 2014, 09:21:58 AM
The primary buyers / whales of DRK and the largest holders have a different worldview of things compared to the "oh I have 20 DRKs and I call myself an investor" attention-deficit-disorder people.

They have more realistic expectations and are not behaving like ...well.... "stupid people". For the most part, at least those who understand cryptocurrencies, understand that a development plan needs time, effort and even trial & error to get it right. The patience level varies between them as there is no uniformity of what they are willing to accept in terms of delays, but most are quite mature in their approach. Besides, even with the delay, the bump from 10% to 20% ensures that they'll get more than they bargained for.

If you have a testnet and dont get it right the second time, there is no excuse. There were lots of people working hard preparing and deploying masternodes. Its just disappointing. I thougt the Nxt AE would be a tricky one to implement, but they did there homework and it runs smooth. This is getting a million dollar grave.

I don't think anybody is looking for excuses here. Masternode payments are a serious hack to the bitcoin protocol because they add further layers of consensus to the network. We could fork another 2 times and still not get it right - until we actually do. The only people "disappointed" are those who do not realize the size of the task, thinking it's something minor. Newsflash: It's isn't. Calibrate your expectations accordingly.

Prior to the May 25th fork I wrote:

For the bet: I'm not a betting guy anymore.

LOL. If you really believed what you were saying, you would have immediately his DRK under 6$ within 3 weeks' bet.

Darkcoin is not Bitcoin. It's in active development. Its code is changing every day and there have been two hard forks in like 10 days. Something can go wrong with a bug, people can flash-crash it in an instant and a candle might appear at 6$. Why bet* on something like that? The masternode hack in particular can be tricky for it requires changes in stratum + p2pools. It got delayed 2 weeks and it'll still have bugs I believe, that might require extra hard fork.

Prior to yesterday's fork I wrote:

Anyone knows what Evan has been up to lately? If not, my guess is that he is preparing a sick announcement for RC4 tomorrow after hard fork.

Given the path that we followed from alpha-beta etc, usually stuff related to DarkSend were first tested on testnet to check them out for problems... I doubt RC4 will go online straight away as without testing it might break existing functionality. It's a 50mn coin right now, you can't just put large updates without test. But even when it was 1-2mn coin, we still went the testnet route first. So probably we'll first see a call for testing RC4 features, when some of these are ready, and then => RC4 announcement.

As for price, I recommend keeping some cash in reserve to chew panic sellers if something goes wrong. No matter how well tested it is, masternode payments are a big hack to the protocol and they may still present problems. This is not FUD, it's just the way it is regarding such fundamental changes. Let's say the right attitude this time round is "cautiously optimistic".

Am I prophet for writing the above? I just understand what the task is and what to realistically expect.

Anyone thinking that success is 100% guaranteed, is deluded. Even Bitcoin can crash in an instant due to some bug or even fork - without even applying dramatic/fundamental changes. You try your best and hope for the best. If it isn't enough, you try again and again until you succeed. There is no other way. All others are shitting on DRK and then they'll use the same masternode protocol for their own payments, when it's ready. Even Bitcoin might apply something similar to give incentives to node operators as that aspect is not very future-proof.

2-3 weeks is too long, yes that is true. But on the other side, one more failed fork is as good as dead coin. There is already enough Fudders out there. It is good, more time to pickup cheap DRK.

I actually said the same thing after the last try at hardforking. Im surprised, in a good way, that the price is so good right now Grin If it hit a floor of 0.013 it would still be at a good price in my eyes, considering how people usually react to things like this.

The primary buyers / whales of DRK and the largest holders have a different worldview of things compared to the "oh I have 20 DRKs and I call myself an investor" attention-deficit-disorder people.

Maybe DRK should abandon masternodes entirely? Masternodes have ruined the price.

Yeah it only went up from 0.0012 to 0.02 since their introduction...

Sorry, I'm not familiar with this coin. Does it implement technology that has even remote chance of providing some anonymity? I doubt because I didn't see name of this coin in any document (articles etc.) I read.

Today has been amazing.  While I would have preferred that the fork gone smoothly, it provided an outstanding additional entry point.  I didn't come close to bottom ticking this move which I'm upset with myself for (more on that below), but in the long run, my entry points today will look excellent.

There are multiple reasons I decided to increase my investment:

1.  Excellent price.

2.  The issue appeared minor in scope.

3.  I thought we were going to see a stronger selloff than we had which is why I didn't come close to bottom ticking the market.  There were a couple large panic sellers, but there were plenty of people buying the heck out of those drops.  There is serious capital utilizing prime opportunities like this to enter the market.  I want to ride that capital wave.

4.  Evan showed once again what an incredible dev he is.  He stood strong and did what was best for DRK in the face of what would be insurmountable opposition to most people.  EVERY SINGLE PERSON in IRC was saying not to revert.  I didn't see a single person supporting his decision yet he stood firm because he knew it was the right decision.  I guarantee you this, should Evan ever decide to start a company after DRK and needs Venture Capital, VC's will be throwing money at him.

Buddy, I am sorry, but concerning 4/, I still can't fathom with the fork could not go ahead ESPECIALLY since it was apparently caused by a minor and rare issue - 2 blocks simultaneous with different MN votes. We will never know, but it seems to me it is preposterous to pretend it was the best decision.

The code must be able to account for freak results, even if they happen rarely. You can't have your coin at the mercy of random forks due to a known bug.

Its going to take one more month for what you call "simple problem" ?

It'd be better to let the devs work without the stress of the market so that they deliver a bug-free feature. IMO the coin's reputation cannot afford a 3rd failure to migrate to the new payments system. A quick & dirty fix that could possibly lead to another problem is by far worse than waiting for some weeks. My 2 cents

When the first delay occurred, people were like "if there is a second delay, the coin will die".
When the first fork happened, people were like "if there is a second fork, the coin will die".

It seems to me like the benchmark is always re-positioned to the next possible make-it/break-it point to add extra excitement and drama.

If people have unrealistic expectations of what a development project is, that's their problem. I think the market is showing tremendous levels of maturity and now understands the situation far better.
2494  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ** HARD FORK JUNE 20TH ** on: June 20, 2014, 11:51:46 PM
Im kind of curious to know if the dev's trade around this info or halt their trading activity day of patches? It can be dangerous to play in these games when this is the case. I have no reason to believe but have the dev's assured anyone that they don't trade off the knowledge?

Kinda seems well played for those in the "know"

If they wanted to trade on inside info, I don't think #darkcoin-test would be publicly visible.

I just wonder if hes stated it either way. I can't help but feel like If I had a lot of coins I'd want to hope I would be fair. But you put thousands of dark coins in my hand and tell me nobody will know if I sell first and then tell news... makes it easily manipulated from the inside. As someone who wants to stay long with 30 dark domains registered I hope to have confidence and the team and products integrity as well.

know what I mean?

I think Evan is pretty busy monitoring the system and its wellbeing rather than trading the coin.

But, there are several layers of information.

The way information propagates is something like this:

1) IRC
2) Bitcointalk / Darkcointalk (in days like this it's Bitcointalk)
3) The internet at large

Even at the IRC level, it has two strata, one being #darkcoin and another being #darkcoin-test, with #darkcoin-test being more in the know than #darkcoin.

In finance, the two most prized abilities are

- Knowing the future
- Controlling the future

...as you can make tons of money out of these.

What happened earlier is that #darkcoin-test witnessed an announcement to something like 50-60 people that there is a problem and that the dev will shut down payments with a patch. Everyone else (#darkcoin IRC, darkcointalk, bitcointalk, etc) were in the "dark" and celebrating about the success of the patch. Some were already selling on those who were celebrating and asking "why are people dumping???" given that some had better info than others.

Note that this is not a function of being an insider, but rather actively seeking information to be up-to-date, as the info is public for all if one goes to the proper channels.

Some on the IRC felt that my taking this info from darkcoin-test and posting it onto bitcointalk is not good and that perhaps darkcoin-test should be password-locked or something. I made the case that if that happens, this lack of transparency is then in itself a function of financial manipulation because those who have a password, will have access to advance info against all the others. A password for a closed IRC channel could be worth XX.XXX USD in this context.

The market should mature in its reactions to good or bad news (ok this is cryptoland, so...) but, IMO, transparency is non-negotiable in this aspect.

I don't have the requirement for information to be brought to me, and 99.9% of the time I don't even bother to find the info (=log into IRC) but today I did because I knew if I didn't I would be lagging in terms of updates. So I tried to relay this info to the forum as well. If the darkcoin-test was closed, that would be impossible.

The dev doesn't possess bi-location ability to be simultaneously able to post in the forum, irc, twitter, facebook etc etc, while also seeing the problems and trying to fix them. He is one man and thus can only post in certain places at a certain pace given time and workload constraints. People in here bitch about information/communication issues, and the dev not giving updates to the forum, when in fact he is active on the IRC, but the info is not always reaching the forum and it creates unnecessary panic that the dev is somehow absent when the whole universe is imploding.

In any case, to make the long story short, I haven't seen any evidence of financial manipulation. And, as long as the process / communication is transparent, we will be OK.

[01:51] <evan82> I found the problem :-)
[01:51] <evan82> It's actually rather simple to fix
[01:51] <tifozi> ahem
[01:52] <evan82> anyone care to guess from the paste? I'm curious
[01:52] <tifozi> checking
[01:52] <tifozi> badVote
[01:53] <evan82> Both votes have the same hash, but they have different votes
[01:53] <evan82> er both blocks*
[01:54] <evan82> Two blocks are solved at nearly the same moment on the network, both are propogated and accepted by the network. In the current implementation both blocks have the same hash, but in these blocks there's some discrepency about who to vote for.
[01:54] <evan82> In one block the miner votes for 88802 and 88803, in the other the miner abstains from voting. When the next block is solved it's based on of one of the older blocks, so half of the network beleives the miner cheated and rejects the block causing a fork.
[01:54] <GNULinuxGuy> nice Cheesy
[01:54] <evan82> The solution to this is rather simple. Any changes to the votes need to also change the hash of the block. The network must not think these two blocks are the same.
[01:54] <tifozi> How come we didnt see this in testnet
[01:54] <tifozi> seems rather simple problem
[01:55] <tifozi> what in mainnet causes it
[01:55] <evan82> Not sure. No one noticed.
[01:55] <qqr> race conditions are hard to witness
