PoS has failed in pretty much every implementation in every single coin in crypto history. There’s a reason most coins today use some form of PoW. PoW is still the better option by far compared to PoS, and it’ll likely stay that way with algo changes to keep ASICs out on some coins for a very long time.
2482  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Does adding nodes in Bitcoin core increase its speed? on: March 12, 2018, 11:01:01 PM
Wow, with 0.22% every hour... I can see this as being a huge barrier to BTC adoption by normal people.

It's probably why people resort to using hardware wallets, like Trezor, or online web wallets.

But, I guess in the same token... if Bitcoin is to be used as a banking alternative, with utmost security... then it only makes sense that high tech specs are required by someone's computer in order to integrate the "banking system" with their computer. Minimum of 150 GB lol.

I guess that means in the future you'll have a computer that's solely for bitcoin purposes, which is more secure in the long run.

I agree with the others, it's not about the nodes, but rather your computer's specs. It's 150 GB that your hard drive has to validate via processors and such. Not going to be a lightning fast process... but once it's done, you'll finally have bitcoin core running and you can make cold wallets and everything. Smiley
I don't even have Core installed on my computer. For normal use I have electrum, and for cold storage I have hardware wallets to store my coins.

Most people will opt to use Electrum anyways, since the regular Joe who looks into BTC will want fast sync times and won't need all the features of Core. Electrum's secure enough for regular use if you use an encrypted wallet and don't go waltzing around pasting your private key or getting viruses on your computer. If you want to securely store your coins or seldom use your coins, a hardware wallet is best. For just secure storage, a paper wallet is a good and cheap option (treat paper wallets as one-use items).

Both Core and SPV both have their benefits and downsides, but if you use the right precautions an SPV wallet is just fine for use. Security-wise, a good implementation like Electrum makes an attack difficult.
2483  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: GPU mining will die in 2018! on: March 12, 2018, 09:09:05 PM
Right now I'm concerned cause I really thought the asic companies would never build a cryptonight asic cause that is too shameful, cryptonight is the last defense right now against all evil in the money world. This is really bad, those companies don't have a single bit of decency or morality whatsoever.

The ASIC producers, cheat their buyers several times.

- D3 Dash miner: todays profit 3.96USD (if You calculate the electric power cost, not profitable at all)
- L3 Litecoin miner: todays profit 8.2USD (hardly profitable)
- S9 SHA256 miner: todays profit 9.98USD (with small drop of BTC will not be profitable)

Some of those units people bought for over 3000USD. Now they have only noisy heaters, and lost their money.

What a business model! Produce the unit, take money from buyers in advance, put it in mining farm for 3 months while it is very profitable, and than deliver it like used ones. Make a huge oversold of units and algo diff. skyrocket, profitability ZERO.
They know what they are doing, and doing it with every new model. Huge hype on the beginning (representing big profitability at moment), presale etc... Only early adopters can profit, all others, when they receive units, have very long period of ROI.
I hope that new buyers will understand this "ponzi scheme" and protect their money.

Regarding this new "cryptonight miner", I think that this will be the first time We have here antihype atmosphere.
Monero team  (biggest Cryptonight coin) announce antiASIC fork, followed by other (IPBC etc...). All other cryptonight coins do not have enough daily trade volume, and when we will have more coins than it can be sold price will drop.
Coin owners invest lot in their coins, I believe they will protect projects, and will follow the Monero, IPBC etc...in anti ASIC algo change.
It is much better than see the prices around one satoshi.

The First Time there's been a negative atmosphere around miners? There was already a negative atmosphere with the A3 and D3, though the ambiance was lighter with the D3 when it initially came out (I was personally one of the more pessimistic people about the miner). The L3+ is still profitable, making around $200 a month after an electrical cost of $.10/kWh, and in terms of mining revenue in BTC on Nicehash the L3+ has remained fairly consistent for the past month. You're right about the rest of the miners, though (the D3 is pretty much a worthless doorstop at this point and I wouldn't suggest buying any of the miners Bitmain currently offers unless you're willing to accept massive risk for very little potential profit). I'm personally glad more people are realizing the risks of mining from others getting burned, though. Too many people think mining's just a get-rich-quick scheme nowadays.

You did forget to mention the A3 that's currently making around $600/month in electrical costs of ten cents per kw, but I expect difficulty to rise on that chain eventually as well (not to mention they're currently OOS on Bitmain's site).
2484  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How to reduce the stale shares in mining of ETC on: March 12, 2018, 08:31:05 PM
Latency's most likely the issue you're getting, or an unreliable internet connection (I'm guessing it's the former). Ethermine seems to be having stale share issues anyways (perhaps their Stratum servers are overloaded?). I'd personally try moving to a different pool temporarily to make sure the issue isn't on your end, though I'm pretty positive the issue lies in Ethermine rather than your connection.

A simple Google search about Ethermine having issues with stale shares shows hundreds of results to me.

2486  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: what (prepaid/credit/virtual) card are allowed to be linked to paypal on: March 12, 2018, 07:47:03 PM
I have a coinizy account, and it just gives me an error upon trying to login. It’s been like that for a few months, and all I can infer from that is Coinizy’s turned to a scam. Looking at their thread confirms this:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1624128.660

I haven’t been able to find any suitable alternatives to Coinizy since. Most others require KYC which is a hassle for me, and even Coinizy (or Kardiz) stated they were going to require KYC to use their VCCs before they turned into a scam.

I found ecopayz and seems it might work...but I wish uquid would have available cards since it supports almost every popular crypto

Ecopayz doesn't seem to accept crypto deposits, and Uquid returns a 403 to American visitors as they seem to block traffic coming from the US. I recall using Coinpayments a while back but not being able to do anything because they required a KYC before I could even use their card- oh well, guess it was worth a shot. I'll probably just end up doing the KYC and then using them anyways, though.
2487  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: GPU mining will die in 2018! on: March 12, 2018, 07:28:33 PM
My humble opinion is that cpu-s mining is future. Mostly because of upcoming ASICs that will destroy gpus.
CPU mining is dominated by botnets, and it's hardly profitable most of the time anyways. Monero's usually the most profitable crypto you can mine with a CPU, and GPUs easily outhash any CPU you might have (see flashed Vega 56/64 at ~2KH/s versus CPUs at ~500H/s). It's very likely not the future, and most CPU-mineable coins are also GPU mineable.

I honestly find it funny people claim this site’s a scam. Scott is active in the community (he even has a Bitcointalk account if you still think this is a scam, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=35090) and I bought an SP20 and several other miners from his site in the past, and he’s always online for support. The site’s not as modern as other sale sites, but it’s most definitely legit. He even helped me set up my miners when I got them (I was inexperienced with flashing SP20 firmware at the time). He was even an 'official' retailer for the Compacs and 2Pac miners.

I still have the SP20 in my basement and I can pull up the invoice for the order for you guys if you want. I’ll include my BCTalk name in it as well when I get home.

I don’t know why you'd make an incredibly uninformed post about the site. Scott was one of the first to make a legitimate site selling hardware, and many people can vouch he is legit here. The fact that you pull the paid shill argument out of your ass is absolutely pathetic.
2490  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: DragonMint B29 Blake256 Miner (March) on: March 12, 2018, 02:01:50 AM
Wasn't it listed at like 5599 a day or two ago?  They doubled in price that quickly?

Think i'd rather buy 10 A3's at that point (yes sucky power usage but ...damn)

So I just got an email from Halong Mining and for some reason I do not feel good about it  Undecided

its going for USD 10,499  Roll Eyes

What do you think?  Grin

DragonMint B29 Blake256 Miner (March) is now back in stock at Halong Mining

Hi There,

DragonMint B29 Blake256 Miner (March) is now back in stock at Halong Mining. You have been sent this email because your email address was registered on a waitlist for this product.

If you would like to purchase DragonMint B29 Blake256 Miner (March) please visit the following link: https://halongmining.com/shop/dragonmint-b29-blake256-miner/

You have now been removed from the waitlist for this product.

There's two different Blake256 miners they offer, the cheaper $5000 one is faster in terms of hashrate but uses more power and is less efficient, whilst the more expensive model at $10K hashes at just 2THs but is more efficient. At current rates the cheaper one makes more, but don't count on anything. This is a D3/A3 situation ready to happen.
2491  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: HELP : Correct way to power risers ? on: March 11, 2018, 08:29:23 PM
First of all, do not use SATA. Use either molex or PCI-E. I suppose there is one card now, when you will have more, I think you should go for a modular PSU.

No I am gonna power 12 1050ti with 2 Antec Classic 750W (non-modular, gold). I will start slowly of course, one by one, observing and learning.
You arent going to be able to power everything with a 750w 80% efficient power supply.  80% (.Cool of 750w is 600w available power.  Max tdp of the 1050 Ti is 75 ( x 12) = 900w and that isnt even including the motherboard, cpu, ssd, etc.  You are going to have to spring for a larger power supply and I would get a modular.  All of mine are.

I said I am gonna use 2*750W PSUs i.e. 1500W or 1200W at 80 %
Adding on to that, by using less than the full capacity of the PSUs and splitting the load onto two power supplies, the end result is the PSUs being near the peak of their efficiency curve and save you money on electricity in the long run. Good move on the PSUs.
2492  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: March 11, 2018, 08:16:09 PM

hi guys,

after a little fear yesterday due to a fan that stoped working after a reboot, I wonder if some parts are " necessary" to have in stock when you have few S9.  ( I have mine since only 2 month )

Like one fan or two, a control board, a spare psu ?

thank you.
I personally keep fans and PSUs for both my GPU rig and the few Antminers I still run at home. I seldom see true controller board errors and I've never had to swap one out on any Antminer before. Most of the time issues lie in fans and PSUs, and an error in these can be quite costly.
2493  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: March 11, 2018, 01:34:03 PM
I have to wonder why none of the competition has cloned this design. There are many places where you want to have these silent miners...
There's simply not enough demand for quiet miners. Most large buyers of mining supplies operate farms where noise is not an issue, and having a silent miner is a rather niche product when you can just sell larger volumes louder ones.

I still find it interesting Bitmain has put 'Coming Soon' on their R4 product page but they haven't come out with any news about it yet. Same for the clock-router LTC miner that they have, the page for that showed up 2-3 weeks ago but there's been no news about it whatsoever besides the product page.
2494  Other / Meta / Re: sMerit Review exel file to find cheaters with all clickable links! on: March 11, 2018, 04:04:10 AM
If I remember correctly, I was given 50 merit for a post, and I suspect that was to allow me to award sMerit to newbies and juniors ( which I have tried to do). Being able to award sMerit is really the only advantage in receiving merit for Heros and Legendaries.

Although it's always nice to know you are appreciated, but a thank you and an expansion of a post might have more value for the forum.
Actually, if you're a Hero Member, you need to have at least 1000 Merit to reach the Legendary Member status, so if you're strictly looking at Merit as a means to 'level up', it still has utility to Hero Members.

However, end of the day, the idea is to influence behavior for the good in the forum, and I think that general sentiment is true even for Hero/Legendary Members. I don't have data on this, but I would be surprised if the quality of posts even for the Hero/Legendary Members hasn't gone up since the introduction of the merit system.
At some point your post quality can hit a cap and it doesn't get much better; most Hero/Legendary members are at that mark with the exception of true signature spammers. Still, if you're making a contribution to the forum you're still going to get merit and what you deserve. Plenty of people are already at 600-700 merit from the default 500 merit for Hero members. Heroes and Legendaries typically get less merits for good posts in most sections of the forums, but merit is still being passed around.
2495  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: XFX Radeon RX470 4GB for $280 on: March 10, 2018, 03:46:57 PM
There's occasionally deals for 580s around the same price , but if you don't want to go through the hassle of trying to snipe one the pricing is pretty good considering recent pricing of all RX series cards. I'd personally go for it.
2496  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Single 12 GPU Rig Vs Two 6 GPU Rigs-Which would be better? on: March 09, 2018, 05:06:25 PM
Also, I googled but couldn't find an answer for this:-

Will the Hash rate/Finding share and Accepted shares be same on one 6 GPU rig as compared to two 3 GPU rigs, or one has more efficiency in mining than the other set up.
If both rigs have exactly the same components and graphics cards then you’re going to get nearly the same hashrate and shares. The same goes for all other setups like 12 GPUs vs 6 GPUs, etc.

I’m looking for $25 in PP at a 105% exchange rate for my BTC. Message if you’re interested. Amount of BTC sent will be based on the price of BTC at the time the deal is finalized.

Edit: Title corrected from Need PP, Need BTC.

Locked. Deal done.
2498  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer V9 4TH on: March 07, 2018, 10:33:01 PM
How's the noise levels (decibels, perhaps a phone meter for some estimation) and temps of the V9? Noticed they're using the new Nidec fans, I've heard both positive and negatives about those on the S9s. I wonder how good (or bad) they are on the V9s.
2499  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Bounties (Altcoins) / Re: My experience with bounty managers on: March 07, 2018, 04:19:21 PM
Lutpin has paid me a bit more than one bitcoin for the Bitblender signature campaign, and around 1.5 if I add up the amount of BTC I have earned from all campaigns I’ve participated in run by him. He pays on time when possible, and he’s an active and trustworthy member of this community. He also helped make the SMAS blacklist and only runs campaigns for reputable services. Nice person overall, cares about the future of the forum.

Got my V9s today. Look and smell brand spanking new. Not some used S7s with new stickers.
Could you provide any photos of the miners if possible? It'd be great to have a look at these outside of Bitmain's sales page, a look inside would be even greater but I understand if you just want to do the outside of the miner.

I also wonder if these would be stable running at the frequency the S7 runs at.
