I am not really sure if it's a good idea to compare the electricity consumption of those songs listed above with Bitcoins'. They don't really look as important/valuable as Bitcoin, and probably don't deserve to consume too much. In my opinion, it's OK for Bitcoin to consume lots of electricity for good uses and for security, as long as the energy is efficiently used... and comes from good/clean sources.

Much like Bitcoin, the music used in the example has the ability to transcend cultural and language barriers.  I hope that one day, Bitcoin is just as popular as any one of those songs; hence the comparison.

An interesting question just popped in my mind:
How much kWh was used to create the current Blockchain?
Should be somehow possible to calculate it based on the given mining hardware and mining difficulty.

https://twitter.com/blockbain/status/1305539345991036933

a fair few

This is actually what matters. Energy spent and not hash power as so many take as main metric of how secure bitcoin network is. Hash power keep increasing because better and better ASIC miners gets built. But if energy put into securing Bitcoin network stays same that means that no matter how high hash power will go the network is same secure as before. The main problem is what also is said in the tweet. These numbers are just his estimations. It is much easier find a hash power number then to calculate energy spent.  Actually even better metric would be money spent to pay electricity spent for mining. Perfect but even harder to get metric.

Yeah except he is too high. he has 96,029,700 mega watts per 2020 year that would be 263,095 mega watts per day or 10,962 megawatts an hour.

my 2020 hourly estimate was about 7100 megawatts on the high side based on 50 watt per th gear.
my 2020 hourly estimate was about 5670 megawatts on the low side. based on 40 watt per th gear.

he used  70-75  watt per th gear  and I do not think that is accurate

still whether we use 5,700 mega watts an hour
or 7,100 megawatts an hour ------ my best guess for now

or 10,900 megawatts an hour

it is a lot of energy per hour.

I think you've misunderstood.  He said:

'That’s cumulative up until ~ right now. Highest yearly value was 2019 @ 29.33 TWh (half my estimate from last year because it’s a minimum bound) - this year will end up being more though once finished, 2020 YTD @ 27.59 TWh. Usage appearing to stabilize, maybe eventually drop.'

The 96,029,700 MWh you quote is the total amount of energy since the inception of Bitcoin.  His estimate for 2020 so far is 27.59 TWh which translates to 3185 MegaWatts which is actually at the lower bound according to Cambridge estimates - https://www.cbeci.org/

Anyone here know anything about this?  https://xx.network/

Apparently, it has been developing as I live under a rock.  Or else, perhaps there may be disadvantages to ignoring altcoins too assiduously.  There are also disadvantages to a marketing website facially indistinguishable from empty hype, which I would click straight past if the name “Chaum” were not associated with it.

What catches my attention is that the original inventor of digital cash, who also led the creation of the IACR, is probably not a snakeoil peddler.

Im in around 60% profit right now, will take some profit to cover fees in case we go back to my entry to stop me out (moved stop to entry)

Playing with FIRE (not the early retirement one). But good luck to you SS123, nice catch.

How am I playing with fire? I already took profits and set my stoploss as such I cannot lose money anymore, and even if I hadn't caught the top, when my stoploss hit I would've only lost 1%

Bitcoin steadily rose from 10250 to 10765 (up $515) on Sept 14th and you executed a short with possibly a 15 minute window that was an $80 drop at best if executed flawlessly and you don't see the fire?  Dude, you're an adrenaline junkie.

Working on it...
Don't worry @Hueristic.  I'll use the network hash rate in my calculation to ensure the energy usage from all miners is included.

edit2: Wow.  Tables really suck in BBcode.

Yeah these tables are rough...

I have no Idea how you can differentiate between base systems, gpu miners, fpgas and asics over time. The overlap is huge and due to locations their profitability is widely varied so you would have to make massive assumptions. Literally this could take a person a lifetime to get within a small tolerance of error.

Not to mention it is widely believed satoshi (and others) used custom FPGAs and how those could be calculated is beyond me.

It's certainly going to take a while to compile the data we'll need but I think we're going to find that recent mining of blocks far outweighs earlier mining in terms of the power requirement.  My hope is that it will be enough of a difference to make the error very small even with the assumptions that will have to be made.

Transferring 10 MB of data uses about the amount of energy in a AA battery which is 0.0039 kWh
Here are the top ten viewed YouTube music videos and the number of times they were viewed (while I compiled this tonight).

The average video play time is ~ 4 minutes which equates to about 40 MB of data transfer per video per view.
The total number of views for the 10 songs above is 43808209188.
This translates to 683408063.3328 kWh of energy for the data transfer alone.

I'm just warming up.  Thanks for the confidence and the pressure JJG, it will help me to achieve the optimal level of arousal required to complete my mission.

Wait, should I even bother to include data transfer for pool mining or just the CPU/GPU/FPGA/ASIC power required for hashing?

Don't worry @Hueristic.  I'll use the network hash rate in my calculation to ensure the energy usage from all miners is included.

Why would any of us give any shits, unless we believe there were some better coin?  proof of stake, perhaps?   or some kind of amorphous and misleading SJW nonsense like that? Angry Angry

I thought it was purely for science.  I will cease calculations at once.

So the 'purpose' of WO now is to 'taunt' me with 'un-obtainable Women', as well as NOT having the 'huge' pump in BTC/Crypto prices that I desired at the

beginning of this year of 2020. Sad

damn, that is just mean...I mean give me a BTC/Crypto 'pump' to $15k ...and I'd give it a pass...but BOTH....cruel, WO, cruel indeed....Sad

(maybe I need a Cat...Cat people tell me life is better with a Cat...at least you give up the idea of any control in the household with a Cat)...

Better get checked for allergies first.  Life with cat if you're allergic sucks ass - trust me.

A girl like that is affordable for everyone in this forum.

It is just a matter of length of time that differs.

Well at least it won't cost me more than a couple of sats!

Guys.  I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Bitcoin wont get us everything we desire.  I'm pretty sure that super-wealthy supermodel and (probably super) mother Kate Upton isn't about to risk losing her super-wealthy, super-talented husband (professional baseballer with the Houston Astros - one of the highest paid in the league to boot) for a few sats in a fling with any of us... okay, maybe she would for El_duderino or LFC_Bitcoin but with their charm, they wouldn't even need Bitcoin and I'm pretty sure she's already too old for them anyway.

2517  Economy / Speculation / Re: [WO] Pity party on: September 14, 2020, 11:34:00 AM

Alas, I need 100k BTC to just get 'invited' to a party where there are enough 'rich guys' to even have such 'fantasy women' show up!..sure...

I still would not have a shot..but..hey, at least then someone looking like her might 'talk to me'.

Whereas now, if I was to approach to ask directions, w/o such a party invite, I'd get maced and arrested for 'stalking' or some such. (sheesh)

Are you serious!?

Alas, you are.  Well, with that stunning personality, no wonder you can’t even talk to a beautiful woman without having her mace you and call the cops.

The problem isn’t her.  And it isn’t a lack of money or “party invites”.

“Sheesh.”

Contrary to much advice (most of which is worthless), people don’t change.  You are who you are.  What you can do is to accept who you are, and set your expectations realistically.  If you are the type of man who cannot get beautiful women (or from the sound of it, perhaps any women), then accepting this can help you to avoid disappointment, frustration, bitterness, resentment, blame games, and making a spectacle of your self-pity.

The soundest advice is so oft that which people don’t want to hear.

Anyway, little steps BTC Hoard/HODL...little steps....soon! Smiley

Well, that’s the spirit!  Bitcoin still loves you.  Bitcoin loves everybody who wants to HODL it.

 Dear Nullius,

Our beautiful young daughter says she's in love with a man 3 times her age.  When we question her about it, she keeps telling us she just loves a man who HoDLs; we don't even know that that means!!
Please tell us, what we should do!

 sincerely,
 worried in WO.

^Stamp a number on each keyword - preferably the number matching the required order of the keys - and you won't have to worry.
I want to do this - just because it's so cool!

What about dealing with a "losing one" scenario that STRF had mentioned?

You suggesting that "cool" people do not have the right (if that's an appropriate word choice?) to lose any of those 12, 18 or 24 washers?

But what happens if you lose 1 or the order of them? Smiley

You add the index number, possibly obfuscated (reversed order, as a simpler example)
get creative Wink

Same question to you OOM (ditto) - as I had raised above for homerx (except substitute "creative" for "cool").

Well I don't plan to put more than a couple of cups of coffee worth of Bitcoin in that wallet, I just think it's cool.
I'll probably keep it on a fob in my pocket and then when I'm paying for a purchase, I'll pull it out, gesture towards it and swing it around while saying "Do you accept Bitcoin?"
When they say, "No, sorry we only accept cash or credit cards",  I'll remind them it's the 21st century, wink at them, tell them they should get with the program and chuckle while slipping that dazzling piece of high-tech jewelry back into my pocket.
