25641  Economy / Services / Re: Pretty Addy Giveaway on: March 04, 2017, 07:34:13 PM
I'm closing this thread.
I've opened a new one: Pretty Addy Giveaway - part 2, feel free to request your addy there.
25642  Economy / Services / Pretty Addy Giveaway - part 2 on: March 04, 2017, 07:25:07 PM
Don't you love having a bitcoin address that starts with a name, something pretty, or just something that suits you? You can find them yourself brute-force using vanitygen, or I can make one for you.
How about 1Pretty3icg1......?

Limitations
  • All addresses start with 1 (one)
  • Most characters are allowed, except for l (lower case L), I (upper case i), 0 (zero) and O (upper case o). You can replace these characters by something else, 1HiDE would be possible, or 1HeLLo
  • Finding an address is based on computing power, and luck. There are no guarantees
  • Difficulty increases exponentially with prefix-length
  • Addresses starting with upper case are (usually) much easier than lower case. 1Loyce takes the same amount of time to find as 1oyce
  • A 1 (one) is extremely more difficult to find than any other character, so 111111 would take a couple thousand times longer than 1Loyce
  • 4 prefix characters are easy to find, 5 is okay too, but 6 (case insensitive) is the limit for this giveaway (and please don't ask for 111111, it is not possible)
  • 7 prefix characters is too much for this giveaway, but I can make you an offer if you post your request.
  • I can only create uncompressed legacy addresses (for now).
Instructions
I can just create an address, and send you the private key. This means you have to trust me, my computer, my cat, both our email clients, and by definition it can no longer be used for cold storage. So let's not. Instead, use split key:
Step 1: Goto https://www.bitaddress.org/ move your mouse/type in the field until it shows 100% and wait a second.
Step 1.5: Optional but highly recommended. Download the page, verify the download and run it locally*.
Step 2: Click Vanity Wallet click the Generate button next to Generate your "Step1 Key Pair"
Step 3: Reply to this thread with your public key and the prefix for your address. Save the private key somewhere safe. You will need it later when I generated your partial private key. Also, let me know if your preferred prefix is case sensitive, or any case is okay (the latter is much faster)
Step 4: Once you received your partial private key, go back to bitaddress.org and click on Vanity Wallet.
Step 5: Go to step 2 Calculate your vanity wallet. In the first field put the private key you saved and in the second field put the partial private key I gave you. Click Add and Calculate Vanity Wallet
Step 6: Copy the Vanity Private Key (WIF) and import it into your preferred wallet.
Credits to shorena for most of these instructions!
If something doesn't work as expected, have a look at this example.

Bonus
Tag this address on blockchain.info, so it shows up on blockchain.info with only the prefix instead of the full address. I have done this for 1foreverDArUNEX2gVD26vautcx3b8zTZ.

SegWit
DarkStar_ offers the same service, but for SegWit vanity addresses. See here for details, you can post your request in this topic.

What wallet to use
You can use any wallet that can import a private key.
Possible:
  • Bitcoin Core: Click Help > Debug Window > Console > Enter: "importprivkey"
  • Electrum: Create a new wallet to import a private key
  • Mycelium (Android mobile): Slide to ACCOUNTS > click "key+"-icon
  • Paper Wallet: DO NOT use bitcoinpaperwallet.com (Warning! It's a confirmed scam since the site is under new ownership!)
  • Paper Wallet: Print it directly from bitaddress.org > Wallet Details, or create some artwork yourself (take safety precautions printing offline*)
  • MultiBit Classic: Click tools > import private keys (from file) (thanks poptok1)
  • MultiBit HD: Use this method from Timelord2067 (thanks poptok1)
  • Blockchain.info: Go to Settings > Address > Import addresses (thanks faysher)
Not possible:
  • Coinbase: This is an exchange, not a wallet. A wallet means you own the private key

Why
Why do I do this? I like it! I've been making vanity addresses for a while, I now have more than I can ever use, so why not give them away?
I hope this will be a nice long-running giveaway, but I feel the need for a disclaimer:

Disclaimer
I offer no guarantees whatsoever, I can deny any request that would take too much computing time, and I can stop or change this giveaway at any moment.
Just to be sure everything is okay: test importing the private key before funding the vanity address.

New thread
After 11 months, 13 pages and more than 9000 views I've closed Pretty Addy Giveaway and re-opened this self-moderated thread. Now I don't have to facilitate "I don't understand"-posts spamming the forum. Questions are welcome of course, but not from people who don't bother to read this.

Donations are welcome: 1foreverDArUNEX2gVD26vautcx3b8zTZ (Balance: )

* Download and use offline. Use for example Ubuntu or Knoppix from a LIVE DVD without ethernet/Wi-Fi
25643  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm Hoarding Bitcoins, and No You Can't Have Any on: March 04, 2017, 11:07:12 AM
i wouldn't waste my bitcoins on a coffee or any product that i can buy with cash.
I do the exact opposite: anything I can buy with Bitcoin, I buy with Bitcoin. Even if I have to buy the Bitcoins just to do so, or buy back afterwards.
I believe I support Bitcoin adoption by paying with it. And it feels great to pay with Bitcoins Cheesy

Of course, I now see the price (in euro) of my dinner a year ago has doubled. But it's the same "loss" for every euro I didn't convert into Bitcoin a year ago.
25644  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and UK Tax? Cashing out 100+ BTC's on: March 04, 2017, 10:54:21 AM
Ive mixed my btc so no way they can prove one way or another that i didnt trade

That way i cannot prove that i have bought of mtgox and hopefully automatically fall under 20% capital gains
In the Netherlands they now have plans to automatically suspect anybody of money laundering if they've used a mixer. It's not implemented yet, and I don't know how UK taxes work exactly, but if it's anything like here you have to prove you earned the money in a honest way.

If it's enough money, I can imagine a temporarily move to another country, cash out legally without having to pay capital gain tax, and move back to the UK afterwards.
25645  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: WILL BUY 2 BTC PER DAY on: March 04, 2017, 09:26:23 AM
Even if 10% below the market price, i am also willing to buy but limited to the countries  we cn meet and cash trade only!
If someone is willing to sell that much under market price, it's most likely shade business. If not, anybody in their right mind would buy 2 Bitcoin, sell it instantly at an exchange, and make 250 dollar profit.
25646  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Egad. 81,000 + Transactions Unconfirmed. Again. Ugh! on: March 03, 2017, 11:17:20 AM
I find it hard to believe someone is making transactions just to spam the network.

You don't know much about the politics of money then.

The Central Banks in particular have a huge amount to gain from causing as much turmoil in the Bitcoin ecosystem as possible, and millions of $ is not much to the people who magic the actual money supply into existence
I know a thing or 2 about Central Banks. I see what you're going at, but I'd like to see some evidence showing Central Banks are buying Bitcoins just to make spam-transactions.
And even if it's true, wouldn't that be all the more reason to increase block size? Let them pump more fiat into Bitcoin for whatever agenda they have.
25647  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Egad. 81,000 + Transactions Unconfirmed. Again. Ugh! on: March 03, 2017, 10:15:26 AM
If we have let's say 2MB blocks, then this person will still be able to spam the network, but it would cost him much more money to reach the same level of effect.
I often read the statement that many transactions are caused by a "spam attack", but I haven't seen any evidence for it.
Fees are now $2000 to $3500 per block. About $15,000 per hour, or more than $2 million per week. Even if only a fraction of this is caused by "spam", that would mean someone is spending millions of dollars on it. I find it hard to believe someone is making transactions just to spam the network.

25649  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Open Letter to GMaxwell and Sincere Rational Core Devs on: March 03, 2017, 07:22:35 AM
I'll get more specific but gimme a bit to think and write. But to those who say I don't explain.  You don't know I have a history in the community of writing 100's of article citing and expounding on every aspect of his works.  I was as meticulous and articulate as I am capable of, and its very easy to use google to search for it.

So what's happening is I did my homework ya'll haven't done yours.
You're doing the same again: expecting me to do "homework" when you open an incomplete thread. I am not going to perform a background check on anything you might have ever written, it's pointless.
25650  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Open Letter to GMaxwell and Sincere Rational Core Devs on: March 02, 2017, 08:50:02 PM
Theymos, what kind of a world do we live in if I have to explain what Nash's already explained? Why won't anyone read it?  I mean I know but, I'm pretty sure he did a perfect job of explaining.  What is the culture of refusing to read the source documents?
You're posting at a discussion forum. You got me curious with the "Open Letter to Core Devs" title, and while reading through your post I was hoping you would tell me what it's all about. Unfortunately, you don't explain that.
As theymos told you already: you mention Nash a few times. It's not my field of study, I've seen the name before, but I don't know more than just the name.
What is the point of posting: "read Nash"? What do you expect from this thread, a confirmation from people who read it? That's not helping anybody.

It would be very interesting if you could share your point of view without complaining about people you spoke to in "slack" (another term I've seen, but don't know what it is exactly). Write a complete post about it, explain your point of view, and convince me why a. you are right and b. why it matters whether or not Bitcoin is "ideal money".

25652  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC low fee taking days (or more) on: March 02, 2017, 07:04:55 AM
Thats how it works. If you want faster confirmation on your transaction, just put a higher fees. The higher, the faster the transaction to be confirmed.
Although this is still true, it's a race into higher fees now. Most wallets use "dynamic fees", which means they adjust the fee to whatever fee is best at that moment. Since most wallets do that, they keep increasing fees.
In the end, we all pay more, and we're all still waiting, as blocks are still limited.
Fees are now spiralling up very fast. A fee that was more than high enough a week ago is now already too small to get a confirmation within 12 hours.

This really stops bitcoin gorwth and mass adoption.
I fear this holds back Bitcoin indeed. How can it grow if more users only means we can make less transactions per person?

Pay higher fees. You should pay $1-3 per tx these days.
If we all do that, it won't be enough anymore by next week. Paying more doesn't solve a scarcity problem, it pushes the poorest off the market.

25658  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: February 27, 2017, 06:48:54 AM
so I assumed it is also trying to look for keys on the CPU? Or does it really take that much CPU to verify the keys?
I can answer your last question: my laptop sometimes drops the CPU-speed 90% until I reboot (I think it's an overheat-protection). When this happens, it gets very slow. During this event, I can use oclvanitygen at the normal speed. As always, it uses full CPU, but for the end result it doesn't matter.

I can't answer your first question, my Nvidia is 25 times faster than my CPU and the output varies too much to see if the CPU adds 4% more to the total. I wish it wouldn't though, it makes my laptop slow to use during searches.
25659  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Fee is larger than transaction now. Bitcoin is broken? on: February 26, 2017, 07:54:31 PM
p.s.: This is the the address with the dust: https://blockchain.info/address/1AsPzC53491jKTvwrUEZnvF6cgtXDWD8mX...
Now would be a good time to try again!
Although https://bitcoinfees.21.co/ recommends 140 satoshi/byte, https://btc.com/stats/unconfirmed-tx recommends only 20 satoshi/byte. And this is for an almost instant transaction, so you can go lower. With currently only 3000 unconfirmed transactions there isn't much competition and you have a good chance you can consolidate many small inputs today.
