the 5700 does/will have pcie 4.0 no? id be inclined to convert from 1080tis

What will AMD cards mine when  xmr changes to random x and eth changes to progpow?  I know eth devs are tools but I wouldn’t buy a card when a change a few months away might render them useless.

I have 9 Radeon VIIs and I'm thinking about selling them, when xmr changes algos the only thing left will be eth and that will get hammered with xmr rigs switching over.

Here is what was said at todays meeting:

There is still another audit on ProgPoW pending completion, as noted by Jameson during today’s meeting.

“[Bob Rao] is doing a very extensive hardware audit,” Jameson said. “Bob’s audit should be coming out very soon. It’s in final stages [and] is going to answer a lot more of the questions and speculations around ProgPoW.”
The testnet launch of ethereum’s Istanbul system-wide upgrade has been set.

“For anyone listening in who doesn’t know how this works, we pick a block number that we estimate to be around the 2nd of October,”
testnet october, live november
scheduled at least

No idea if this is fake news or not but according to some news article found on Tradingview, it looks like the ProgPOW audit was completed and infavor of switching to a new algo.

And they will include the new algo in the fork after this fork sometime at the beginning of 2020. Anyone got any concrete source for this or is it all speculation as before

I read the same, this would be huge.  kicking off ASICs and giving GPUs a great way to spread out hash.
264  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Who ordered the AMD Radeon VII? Lets make a list of Miners / Hashrates / Coins on: September 08, 2019, 02:13:31 PM
Did anyone;s Radeon VII die already? I have a Powercolor with Hynix HBM2 which just died (drivers always crashes in Windows, and would not run any OpenCL job in Linux).

Yes 6 out of 9.

Ah Metroid, Metroid, Metroid.... Your stats of 80%... could be right, could be wrong - you are just throwing out BS without support. And that makes YOU the troll.

It seems you are a lottery winner, my friend which had a farm with 300 gpu's had around 60 gpus to fail in the first 180 days and around 40 gpus more to fail in the next 180 days, around 100 gpus out of 300, 33% in a year. All new retail gpus, warranty was only 30 days. A pro miner, now imagine those new trolls mining and thinking they will get rich fast ehhe and few days after they need to send their gpu to warranty and most will hear, "sorry bro, warranty does not cover mining" hehe

I really mean you are a lottery winner, you know that around 15% of gpus fail in the next 3 months after purchase, gaming on it. Now imagine mining 24/7, the card was never meant to do that, ask sapphire for the stats you will know if I'm right or not, reason they stopped honouring warranty if they find out it was used for mining. As far as I know around 60% of gpus returned to sapphire was used on mining and failed in the first 6 months in 2018.

I will rage hard over my providers and I mean hard with that amount of failures in a instant, I have the same GPUS over 3 years non stop and just 1 failed and pretty much was my fault still I got warranty for it, if your history if is true, you friend is buying crap cards, on that ones yes i believe is possible.

About the mining and GPUS its a lottery as someone said before we dont know no one knows im not sure, yes profitability is really low now to the point where I see as option stop the rigs but they still can pay they bills until that happens they will run.

See that is the problem, only when it happens to you you will see that mining is worthless, I mean, that is only one case of one of my friends, I had  another friend that lost around 240 gpus from lightning and he had all the protection he could have, in the end he lost all his effort for nothing. He never even think about mining anymore, he said that even if eth hits $30k and returns are 5 months like used to be when it was at best on mining he said he will never try mining ever again, not worth the trouble at all and in the end a simple surge could from nowhere end it all.

I've been running 100 gpus for 3 years and have avoided lightning strikes, lol.

I think its more of a question of will the gpu minable coins be around, appreciate and commit to forking?  You need cheap electricity to survive the lean years and not have expectations of crazy profits like in 2017 early 2018.

Also sometimes I hedge my profits short btc to provide a cushion against down tuns.
267  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is it official that GPU mining is guaranteed to be irrelevant in 2 to 3 years? on: August 28, 2019, 04:07:41 PM
Way too much BS and drama here.

GPU mining is profitable with cheap electricity but not worth investing in a big farm.  I have 4 cent kwh electricity and its worth running my gpus but not buying new gpus.  If you want to gamble and build rigs go ahead who knows what the future holds.
268  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is it official that GPU mining is guaranteed to be irrelevant in 2 to 3 years? on: August 28, 2019, 03:20:26 PM

Holy Sh*t. Do Something else. I mean really - that is the worst results I've ever heard of - Holy bad luck stories.

BTW - those results aren't happening to anyone else - just your "friend" - While this article is old, it shows the constant improvement in GPU life up to 2014. Go to Discord, Reddit or even here - no intelligent miner would tolerate 30% failure rates with non-warrenteed GPUs. What ever you and your friend are doing to buy GPUs - it's a dumb-ass move.
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Video-Card-Failure-Rates-by-Generation-563/

30% failure rate points to buying shitty GPUs from an unreliable provider. Who would do that? What are you doing, ordering no name GPUs from China to save a dollar? Your "Pro-Miner" friend isn't much of business man if he keeps buying the same crap over and over. Speaking of China, your story has more red flags in it than the Beijing Olympics.

Of the few (30+) GPUs I've bought, 2 where DOA and EVGA replaced them both without question - great customer service. Most resellers have 1 to 3 year warranties. https://www.evga.com/warranty/graphics-cards/ So again - you are tolling information that is just wrong. And I truley mean this - I am sorry for your loss, but you should do something else than mining. You are not up to the task.

Bottom line: Miners are still making money. And GPUs are going to be here for the foreseeable future.

I've been running 100 gpus since jan 2017 and have have only a handful fail maybe 5 at the most.  I've replace fans but a actual GPU breaking becoming useless is very rare.

If his friend is breaking 60 out of 300 gpus something is very wrong.  Hell I had gpus running for 4 years before I turned them off.
269  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is it official that GPU mining is guaranteed to be irrelevant in 2 to 3 years? on: August 27, 2019, 07:53:10 PM
Only thing mining eth are AMD and they are not good for much else maybe xmr if you have a newer card, most of eth hashing power will not move it will get turned off.  My few AMD cards will be turned off if not sold soon, 3 years old and paid off many times over.
270  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: List Of GPU Mineable Only Coins - GPU Mining Will NEVER Die! on: August 26, 2019, 05:41:54 PM
Beam and grin just changed their algo and RVN is changing to fork the fpgas.
271  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: The world's first public X16R FPGA miner—ALUM F1 [Update] on: August 26, 2019, 04:51:12 PM
Raven is switching algos in a month, this will become useless, if it even exists.

Please link that switching info.

To op  so far every fpga sale attempted on this forum has been a bust.  No one has done well with pruchase of fpga's.

Fpga sellers have been too slow to market and they most often don't offer the best algos.

flat out not true about fpgas lots have done well with them, and dyor phil, not that the fork will effect fpgas anyway.

Which fgpa's?  I regret buying my F1+s and can't find any other FPGAs that have a decent price point for the income.
272  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: what is overall state of alt coin mining status? on: August 26, 2019, 04:43:34 PM
It's only profitable to mine if you have free or dirt cheap electricity.
I'm not a miner, but I've certainly read enough about it here and have seen tons of videos on Youtube.  My understanding is that even if you have free electricity, it would still take a long-ass time to recoup your investment on the required hardware.  That's if you're just starting off right now with no mining equipment.  Bitcoin is definitely not profitable for an individual to mine unless all the hardware is paid off and electricity is dirt cheap (Philipma1957 would probably say the same thing).

All of this is why I took an interest in proof-of-stake coins, which doesn't require anything other than a desktop computer in order to earn coins.  True, it's not real mining but I got into the game extremely late.  Wish I'd heard about and taken an interest in bitcoin years ago.

I have 4 cent kwh and its boring now.  Still profitable but I can't find a reason to expand my mine, I have 100 amp service maxed out at 80 amps and even with cheap electricity nothing is looking great.  I wanted to run a 400 amp service but i really can't find a good reason.  90% of my gear is 3 years old expect for a few z11s and so its all paid off, I should sell my gear.
Pardon my ignorance (which I freely admit), but what are you mining?

I'm mining beam with my NVIDIA, Eth with my AMD and ZEC with my z11s.

I think you guys are getting paranoid, but it also seems like a good case for privacy coins.

Yes it is a bit paranoid and everyone is from China on the list.

But my wonderful prez has decided to up the anti with more tariffs against China and China has upped the tariffs back.

So things seem to be moving into unfriendliness as I type.

I also will most likely alter all my crypto business practices to avoid yet another pitfall that has seemed to appear this summer.

I've changed my process also using privacy coins for all my transactions and moving mining profits.  Not to cheat but the less info the better.

Hello,

New user here. Just flashed a few test machines. Everything is working fine except the pool configuration. Awesome Miner is showing that the pool stays stuck at pools.fudd.net instead of my chosen pool.

I have stratum+tcp:// in my pool configuration and I'm using Antpool ZEC.

Advice?

Catch me on discord and/or PM me the support ID from the status page on one of your miners please and I will look into what you are seeing.

-j

Not everyone can conveniently install and/or use Discord. I'd appreciate some advice in here please.

The issue is this:

Basically any time I check on the miners via Awesome Miner - it's showing that they're mining on your pool, 80% of the time. I'm absolutely not impressed by this. Undecided

I will not trust a large farm of 100+ Z11 machines to a custom firmware that is leeching so much from me. Why is it mining your pool for most of the day??

Don't use awesome miner, works fine without it.

I've had the same problem, 5 out of my 8 quit working.  Right now i'm in the middle of testing and RMA.
278  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Number 9! Ninth altcoin thread. Back to the moon Baby! on: August 20, 2019, 09:26:35 PM
From now on I'm only using kyc exchanges to chashout and send to my bank.  Trade/mine to non kyc exchange sell to xmr and tansfer to wallet.  Transfer from xmr wallet and swap to btc and send to kyc exchange to cashout.  Still paying tax on your mining/trading earnings but with simple transactions.

I've been day trading for 20 years and always reported my gains with on the schedule D with two entries long and short term same with crypto and never had a problem.
279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is it official that GPU mining is guaranteed to be irrelevant in 2 to 3 years? on: August 18, 2019, 11:29:42 PM

Then it was assumed that GPU mining would be dead since ASICs came out and then Litecoin came out with Scrypt which was only possible to mine with GPUs.
Then Litecoin got ASICs and it was the entire cycle all over again with ETH.

In fact, the anti-ASIC Litecoin direct successor was not Ethereum but Vertcoin
(launched in January 2014, while Ethereum was launched ~1.5 year later)

btw, it looks like new algo aka Verthash - may have a similar characteristic to ethash (ie. "AMD friendly"):
https://old.reddit.com/r/vertcoin/comments/cl2ske/verthash_is_near_to_the_final_version/

If this happens and eth goes progpow good times.

I stilling mining with my 90 GPUs with cheap electricity.  To be long term profitable you have to have low electrical cost.  With .04 kwh electricity I have not had a month when I didn't make money for the past 3 years.  But right now the profits are pretty low to buy new gpus if we hit a bull run then its all good, if not you could sell your gpus and recoup a lot of the cost.
