I have to agree on this one.
Monero is not a coin that will make you rich soon.
Whenever I agree with the duck, it seems worthy of comment.  But what, pray tell, is "soon"?
SOON™

The only hitch is that the GUI window does not scale properly within a netbook's (setting it up as the cold/offline device) 1024 x 600 screen resolution. The GUI window fills the screen but the "Advanced Options" buttons at the bottom are cut off and rendered inaccessible as the GUI window cannot be moved around nor does it allow scrolling
Try the control/minus key combination that shrinks the screen image.

I'm selling 1,000 Miota for 8,000 BitBay (~0.07 BTC at the time of writing this) on the BitBay decentralized marketplace using unbreakable double deposit escrow smart contract. It is a trustless way of making a trade without any 3rd party escrow agents.

If you want to buy, download and install BitBay market client from the OP of this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=890531
Let it sync, and check the Market tab for the IOTA offer.

I will probably sell a few more batches depending on how this first sale goes.
I downloaded bitbay and started it.  This is what I'm looking at
Code:
$ ./bitbayd
block.GetHash() == 0000075685d3be1f253ce777174b1594354e79954d2a32a6f77fe9cba00e6467
block.GetHash() == 0000075685d3be1f253ce777174b1594354e79954d2a32a6f77fe9cba00e6467
block.GetHash() == 0000075685d3be1f253ce777174b1594354e79954d2a32a6f77fe9cba00e6467
waiting for something to happen now; it's taking a while.  Is this what I should be seeing, and is it going to finish synching eventually?  There's no indication that anything is happening.

Question1:
How high a probability do you think it has that will happen again ?

That is an excellent question
What is the what that will possibly happen?

Thanks for the great response man! You hit every point I needed to know with info I didn't even know I needed to know! Cheesy

So can a US citizen buy XMR with USD on Bitfinex, I'm sick of signing up on these sites and finding out that we in the US can't because of regulation bullshit.

Also isn't this the exchange that got hacked because they gave peoples key to a third party? Is it safe now?
Bitfinex accepts U.S. customers.  I used to wire usd to them from a U.S. bank account.  Bitfinex uses a Taiwan bank.  Bitfinex also handles usdtethers, so if you have usdt on Polo for example, you could send your dollars from there to Bitfinex easily and cheaply.  And Bitfinex doesn't distinguish between tethers and dollars; once it's in your account, it's just dollars, and if you want to withdraw it you can do so either by bank wire or by sending usdtethers somewhere.
Yes, they got hacked because they used some third party security "solution."
I had no funds on the exchange at the time of the hack (lucky for me).
Bitfinex effed up bigly, but I think they learned their lesson.  To me, bfx feels no more risky than any other exchange now.
And I'm thinking about going back to using Bitfinex, because they promise that if you have btc loaned out and a hard fork hits, they will give you BTU.
Exact opposite of Polo, which states explicitly that you won't get BTU if your BTC is loaned out.
271  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [OFFICIAL]Bitfinex.com first Bitcoin P2P lending platform for leverage trading on: March 31, 2017, 12:11:58 AM
I did a BTC withdrawal just now and the fee was 0.0045 BTC (about $4.68). Yes it was fast, but this is ridiculously high, i wasn't in a hurry. I don't usually pay attention to the transaction fees Bitfinex uses, are they always this high? It's this transaction.
I might be wrong, but as far as I can remember Bitfinex covers the fee. E.g. you withdraw 1 BTC from your account and you will receive 1 BTC on your wallet. The transaction fee was paid by Bitfinex.

https://www.bitfinex.com/fees would confirm this.
That page doesn't say that bitfinex pays the miner's fee.

I have to make a decision today, I need to convert usdt to BTC and get some fiat so what do you guys think btc is gonna do today?
set up an account at tether.to and link your bank.
Deposit tethers in your tether.to account.  Wire dollars from tether.to to your bank.
The wire costs $20.

Is https://mymonero.com/ legit? Thanks in advance.
Yup, it's run by one of the  Monero developers. I also heard (but can't verify) that only you can access your funds when you use them.

Fluffypony runs the site - he's one of the leading XMR devs. Sure, many thousands of dollars have been stolen using MITM attacks due to crappy vpns and poor openssl updates... A user here named Birr lost a LOT of money there, so be wary, i'm quite sure he will chime in.

Edit - Shameless plug for physical original Monero coins here - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1828463.msg18204098#msg18204098

Thanks! Cheesy

A bit over 7k xmr, worth about ninety three thousand dollars at the time of theft.
Your humble correspondent is bloodied but unbowed, as the expression goes.
Been using command line daemon and wallet on linux ever since.
At least one other person lost a significant amount, but I don't remember how much.
Fluffy would have done well to require 2FA on that site, instead he had a laser focus on being user friendly to promote monero use and make it easy for newbs to get in... well, newbs make mistakes.  Mistakes like using Fluffy's web wallet.
274  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 11, 2017, 03:14:51 PM
Except TC most people here are smart...smart people look to facts. Most people "outside" are not smart...they are easily to be influenced.

Give Monero an eye catcher like a Amanda B. Johnson and the price will increase by that. There is a reason why we don't see fluffys in TV-Spots. Ridiculous but true. So if any handsome girl outside felt addressed, do it.
Back in the day, New York City had a "Miss Subway" contest.
We need "Miss Monero" contest.
Who will be the next Marilyn Monero, Kate Upton?

Does anyone think Bitcoin can hit $10000 during this run?

If the ETF is approved, yes.

Next growth spurt will finish at 1 * 10 ^4 USD. So yes, between $5k and $49k.

Between $3.2k and $32k you presume...?

Order of magnitude 1 *10^4 ($10000) implies a value between $5000 and $49999. Last growth spurt was to order of mangitude 10^3. I wrote about this in 2013: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=383674.0
geometric mean versus arithmetic mean
276  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: February 27, 2017, 04:25:23 PM
I think a lot of people would rather be in bitcoin because it's so bullish right now.  That could be suppressing xmr's price a little bit.
Eventually XMR will rally versus XBT, the question is when.  It could happen next week or two years from now.
277  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: January 27, 2017, 08:27:51 PM
Thinking about getting a Cryptosteel (anyone experience using it?).
When you backup your seed, there is only space for the first four letters per word. Is the below quoted text applicable to Monero as well?
Quote
you only need to assemble the first 4 letters of each word. Those 4 letters are unique and sufficient to recover the sentence and the entire bitcoin wallet. We did a frequency analysis and determined the minimum set of letters that are needed [is four]
Monero seeds use the electrum wordlist.  The list was designed so that the first few letters uniquely define a word.
I heard it was actually three letters.  I'm not going to spend time searching for whether it's three or four.
But here's a link to the wordlist
https://github.com/monero-project/monero/blob/master/src/mnemonics/english.h
Maybe you can use a script or spreadsheet, and compare the third letter in every consecutive word pair in that list.

I just did a quick visual scan of the third letter in a series of a few hundred of those words and didn't see any matches of the third letter in two consecutive words.

Lokgically, it doesn't make sense to say that it's ok to use mymonero.com, as long as you only store small amounts there.
The site's unsafe whether you keep a dollar or a hundred thousand dollars there.
But the attacker or attackers go after the big accounts and leave the small ones untouched.
279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: October 07, 2016, 04:15:50 PM
Somebody told me to go to mymonero.co and look at the message there.  I have copied and pasted it, with some light formatting of the line wraps to make it more readable.  Otherwise it is completely unedited.  You can ignore the part about rescuing the dogs.  It's a link in the original, which you can go click on if you're interested in that kind of thing.

We know mymonero com was founded by /u/fluffyponyza, a good guy. And we know at least 4 people lost millions this year because they used that site.
Look at this one
https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/52sw9r/9830_xmr_stolen_from_my_mymonerocom_wallet_be/
fluffyponyza gave us some plausible explanations, but after reading all those comments, I strongly believe it's mymonero com itself keeps stealing people's money.
Not so called "keyloger" "phisher" "microsoft"... ridiculous.
We have more information than ordinary people. For instance, we know 99.99% people hold less than 500 xmr on mymonero.
So it's extremely abnormal if we consider the fact that nearly no victim in this kind of crime reported the loss of small amount.
The example that fluffyponyza provided is belonging to us so it can't be take into account and we never got any account with balance of more than 600.
fluffyponyza told us there was a guy who bought data from DNM voluntarily warned them and blamed "botnet keylogger".
No it's nearly not possible and I don't even understand why he said it seriously. It's a ridiculous joke.
Let alone "those victims did not lose any other thing but xmr." The probability would be extremely low.
And we know myetherwallet has a similar business mode, and no user has lost 1 eth because of so called "keylogger dump".
Statistically, you can't swipe so many accounts with large amount unless you have at least 1 fifth of the whole database.
The only possible reason is this GENUINE mymonero web wallet itself or who can access their database as many times as he wants steals customers' money.
Clearly, although We still believe Fluffypony is a good guy, it's obvious his friend is the thief behind those thefts.
And I don't think Fluffypony knew nothing about this.  And the more frustrating fact is that nearly every web wallet site, such as myetherwallet com,
steals money from users account and claims to be "hacked" or "phished".   We have many evidences.
We sent emails to myetherwallet to urge them to return it to victims, and we will report to their local police office if nothing happens in proper time range.
Human beings can update source code if they want. And if your account has substantial xmr and that bad guy periodically check with viewkey manually,
and one day the traffic from your ip will be redirected to a temporarily existed special version which only could be visited from specific ip --- your ip.
It's easily be recorded through javascript even if you are cautious.
Again, as for me, fluffyponyza is good guy. But good guy always has bad intimate friend. BTW, you could help us resque the dogs

The text isn't well written, but it has some interesting and useful content.
Those of you who follow this thread may recall that I lost a little more than 7000 xmr on Mr. Spagni's website.  This zhalox claims to have lost even more, not that I have much energy to devote to feeling sorry for him, considering my own straitened circumstances.  I am of retirement age, legally disabled, I have expensive medical needs, and insurance doesn't cover the treatments.  Whatever.  I deal with life's shit sandwiches on my own time.  I'm not asking anybody to feel sorry for me.  I'm putting out what information or analysis I can find regarding mymonero.com.  Let the reader decide.

Is mymonero.com a secure web wallet?

Others besides me lost thousands of monero on that site.
