441  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet on: April 10, 2016, 08:29:26 PM
i have just downloaded Mycelium as i see it as a good option for paying for items on Open Bazaar.

BUT as the RECEIVE address changes with one use, can i use this wallet to accept payments? Or will i have to change the address after it is used once?

Or will i be able to accept many payment using the one address.

Also in my address book, it shows nothing.
Mycelium uses each address once, by default, but it remembers every address it generates.  If someone sends funds to one of the used addresses, Mycelium will find them; nothing gets lost.
Occasionally you might have to refresh the wallet.  That happens sometimes even if you are not receiving at old addresses.

...
The problem is how do I run Linux on the phone.  Not easy, that's for sure.

https://wiki.debian.org/ChrootOnAndroid

or

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid&hl=en

I'm not saying it's easy, but if you don't want to pay for a VPS and you really don't have a homebase where you can plug a little computer into your router, it seems doable.
Nice, thanks.  Didn't know about those!

I'm trying to work out a way to run a Monero node on a portable device.
My Nexus 7 runs Linux, but has too little memory, so I'm trying to run bitmonerod ARMv7 on a 64 GB flash drive, but running into probs and there's only so much time in the day.
My oneplus one phone has excellent hardware, including 64 GB of storage.  The problem is how do I run Linux on the phone.  Not easy, that's for sure.

Eww....

I get the distinct impression that, besides me, few to none of the participants here are constant travelers.
I don't have the option of setting up a node.  I don't know where I'll be next week.  Even carrying a laptop around is a burden; I use mobile devices almost exclusively.
There are literally billions of people around the world who can't set up Monero nodes, but they have computing power in the form of smartphones.  For most of them, it's not because of an itinerant lifestyle, but what does the reason matter?
If you can't set up a node, you can't set up a node.
People who can't realistically be expected to run a Monero node outnumber the likes of you people by an order of magnitude.

Isn't that exactly what Mininero is supposed to address?
Anything that fully preserves the unlinkability and untraceability of Monero is fine with me.  If MiniNero accomplished that, then it wouldn't be necessary to run a full node. Still, one has to find a trusted node to connect to, yes?  You either have to run your own node, or trust someone else's?

I want to start using Monero crypto currency.

I do not want to install the client.

Is there a paper wallet available or a similar secure option?

Thanks!
I would like to see a full client that runs on Android.
I have a phone with more than enough resources to run a node.
But as it stands, you need linux or Windows.
Monero needs an Android full node app.
We should fund a project.

Generally I have been pretty accurate in my views and people following my predictions have good odds to make actually some real money.

Do you guys think it is possible XMR rises to 2000 usd or do we need to waite until 2017 to that event?

lol 2000$...

100$ would be more reasonable
Gentlemen, do I hear two dollars?
Going, going...

What is the relationship between Darkflarb and Moner*?  Huh

april fools.
Fools is the right word.
I hope this doesn't go on all day.

Let's try to elevate the tone of this discussion.

When the GUI is done,

Last activity on github was 5 days ago, the guy Ilya Kitaev whos working on it doesnt give a shit, so ETA should be another year

Feel free to dump XMR unless u have no problems holding it in cold storage for 300+ days

Anyone who has a problem holding XMR for 300 days shouldnt be buying it.  Keep the short term moonkids out of our coin and the long term community in.

Price increases always bring a bunch of tools out of the woodwork.
Bastard files come in handy.

Superbowl halftime ad starring Pegasus and Fluffypony!   Cool
A Superbowl ad with an equine theme is long overdue.

Things are looking good, but realistically monero is no guaranteed success.
Monero has a 74% chance of succeeding.

Someone will have to vet the NSA algorithms.
I believe one of the existing  public-key algos has a critical weakness that was deliberately introduced.  Is that correct?

Another alternative investments meetup is coming this week.  I was thinking of showing a pitch deck reporting 8x gains from 14 Jan 2015 to 24 Mar 2016, and describing my upside targets under various contingencies.

EDIT: typo and precision fixes.
Assuming it's in New York
I might be able to go.  Can you provide a link...?
458  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 28, 2016, 08:56:27 PM
Man you gotta wonder what they hell is going on with dash ...

Nothing at all.

Some idiot at btc38 accidentally put in an order to buy Dash for 95 btc each, instead of an order to buy at 95 dash per btc.  He spent about 318 btc on 3.353 Dash.  The market of btc/dash on btc38 is very thin, its mostly traded in CNY there.

This trade is greatly impacting coinmarketcap's computation of the Dash price.

Stuff like this happens frequently and never has any lasting impact, exceptfor the guy who got 300 free btc, and the guy who is out 300 btc.
Funny that a guy would have 300 btc just sitting there on an exchange and ready to be fat-fingered away.  Somebody with 300 btc to throw around would know better.  Are you sure that's what happened?  It almost seems like some person had two accounts and was on both sides of the trade.  Could have been on purpose.  So either it was an idiot or somebody who was crazy like a fox.

I will crosspost this from the Aeon thread as I think it has applicability to Monero too:

I was honestly trying to wait for a GUI as the only secure computers I have are little Celeron weenies (which I'm not sure will run a full cryptonote client).  Command lines stress me out, especially third party tools like simplewallet - there's nothing like the relative security of knowing that you have a Linux computer that has only ever accessed the exchange once, and that was to withdraw to a GUI wallet (what I did back in the Dogecoin days).  I know the lack of a GUI helps keep out n00bs in these cryptonote projects, but you also create the counter-risk of having half-peasants like me feel like an exchange is the most secure place for their funds, lest they accidentally send them off into space or lose private keys by sudo-sumo-copying something wrong from a Linux command line.

There are lots of n00bs now getting into Cryptonote and the lack of GUIs is becoming more and more of a hurdle every day - I have introduced several people even less tech savvy than myself to these cryptos in the past months, but these are people who are delighted and excited by trading Bitcoin on an exchange for the first time - but the concept of creating a Monero or Aeon cold address and sending funds to it on a Linux distro would be 'rocket science' for them and utterly outside of their skill set, even with significant support.  Indeed we have now created a scenario that instead of protecting n00bs actually gives them just enough rope to hang themselves.

The likelihood of another Gox or Cryptsy is significant, no matter how trustworthy or professional the exchange seems.  I had hoped the GUI could be an effective bridge in this regard, but I am getting the vibe that proper GUIs might be months away for these projects, forcing me to consider other options.

There is already a GUI I am using it working fine. You still should run a local Monero node but can use the LightWallet2 GUI. If you are using Windows download Monero client at https://getmonero.org/downloads/ unzip to a folder on your desktop. Run bitmonerod until the blockchain is synched. You will also need to download LightWallet2 at https://getmonero.org/getting-started/choose. Download the LightWallet.exe and put in your Monero folder. While bitmonerod is running in a command console and synced messsage shows start up Lightwallet by clicking on the exe in your Monero folder and follow instructions. Now you have the privacy of a local Monero node with a GUI to send and receive Monero.
So that's your answer:  download the blockchain and run a full node.

Sir, did you not see the word "n00b" that American Pegasus typed with his hot little fingers?

Don't you realize that the vast majority of people have no idea of even how to approach such a task?  It is foreign to all but a tiny subset of the population.  You, monsieur, occupy a very small nerd-world.

Supposedly this is a 5-qubit bitslice processor, hence scalable, although not yet proven by scaling in practice: http://arxiv.org/abs/1603.04512

QC is coming, gradually at first, then quite suddenly.  It really is time to panic, before the suddenly phase.

What effect does quantum computing have on ECDSA and EdDSA is the question.
