"500k volume chart" ?, i don't get it.
I think every candle on this chart represents 500k volume.
262  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BitInstant getting hit by a DDoS attack? on: November 09, 2012, 01:03:40 AM
Don't try to use a service that is currently weathering a DDOS attack, that's just stupid for a large variety of reasons.
Name one.

Avoiding use of services under DDOS only makes DDOS more successful, doesn't it?
263  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BitInstant getting hit by a DDoS attack? on: November 08, 2012, 09:35:54 PM
I'm trying to circumvent the DOS by using the bitinstant API, which seems to respond from time to time. However, I have a problem. I'm getting the quote all right, but when I try to place my order I get an error.

The error message says:
Code:
Exception raised in parsing - object of type 'NoneType' has no len()
.

My request is POST to the following URL: https://www.bitinstant.com/api/json/NewOrder

The POST data I send is the following (private info concealed):
Code:
{"payment_params":{"mtgoxusername":"rotsor","code":"MTGOX-USD-..."},"pay_method":"mtgoxcoupon","quote_id":"d9d59310-..."}

What am I doing wrong, if anything?

By the way, this error message, obviously not indended for the user to see, seems to contradict the "Treating all errors as potential security flaws" policy described at bitinstant.com/security.
264  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question / Problem - Redeem Private key on MtGox on: November 08, 2012, 03:23:41 AM
Even though it only allows you to import it once, it will still monitor it for incoming transactions as it seems (for how long?). I've done exactly what you described and Mt.Gox emptied my PK after the transaction got 6+ confirmations. Funds appeared on my Mt.Gox account only after the emptying transaction got its confirmations as well.
265  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Poll] - When I trade coins I... on: November 07, 2012, 02:26:00 AM
I don't do short-term speculation, but when I buy bitcoins I usually place my bids at the current best bid price. They usually get executed and that saves me 0.5% to 1% compared to market order.
266  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin funded debit cards, ASICS, bitcoinwireless, ... did I miss a scam? on: November 06, 2012, 12:22:52 AM
What's the big deal about the Bitinstant's bitcoin-funded debit card "scam" anyway? Bitcurex's debit cards seem to be working fine, right?
267  Local / Новички / Re: Бред\Не бред on: November 02, 2012, 09:01:53 PM

Oh, it turns out Mt.Gox does not accept PKs without confirmations. The argument is in vain, lol.
269  Local / Новички / Re: Бред\Не бред on: November 01, 2012, 11:30:45 PM
В чем секрет-то? Делаешь ASIC первым, и вся сеть твоя.
270  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-11-01 onlinemba.com - Bitcoins: The Currency of the Darknet on: November 01, 2012, 10:58:55 PM
It also says "$33 in June 2012". Can't expect much from someone making so bad factual errors, can you?

Also, "there are no taxes", really?
271  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I think I got it on: November 01, 2012, 10:25:27 PM
Okay.  So its safe to say tomorrow can I can goto CVS, use bitinstant to have money transferred to MtGox.  Then buy bitcoins on the market, then transfer them to my wallet in a fairly short amount of time (1 day)?

Thanks
Yes, bitinstant tries to be, well, almost instant (it doesn't always succeed though Undecided). It advertises expected transfer time on the order of minutes. You can do an instant trade on Mt.Gox as well, and an instant transfer of bitcoins to your wallet. So the whole thing should take minutes.

... wouldn't an online wallet (like blockchain.info/wallet or strongcoin.com) be just as safe?

The issue is that (generally speaking) online wallets keep the private keys on the server.
The problem with this statement is that neither blockchain.info nor strongcoin.com seem to do that.

...it's true that Mt.Gox doesn't wait for confirms...

It's ... not a security vulnerability for Mt.Gox.
Wrong. Allowing PK import without waiting for confirmations on the emptying transaction carries the same risk as acceptance of any 0-confirmation transactions.

...If you have the foresight to buy a private key...
This doesn't make much sense either. The PK purchase is being advertised as instant. You don't need any foresight for that.
273  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Just starting noob. Not retarded] Better off on my own? on: November 01, 2012, 03:31:21 PM
I am not sure how pools are divided. If its divided based on time spent mining, and not just a way to be steadily paid the same amount you would make solo mining, it could be exploitable. Mine 24/7 at 400KHash and get paid the same as everyone else....
Oh, OK! You see, the pool money is not divided based on time spent mining, otherwise people would have to run a bajillion of miners on a single PC to have a chance of getting anything. Smiley

The pool earnings are distributed based on the number of solved "shares", where "share" is just a block with reduced difficulty. Most of the shares are useless to the pool because they do not solve the block. However, they are used to demonstrate the effort spent so that when the winning share is found, the winnings can be distributed fairly.

Given that people are dicks and would just leave an old Pen4 running the mining on the CPU and taking a full share of the coins
What  Huh
What full share are you talking about? Pool or no pool, CPU mining barely get you anything at all, lol.
275  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I think I got it on: November 01, 2012, 02:08:25 PM
there is no legitimate reason to sell private keys online
I'm not sure about that. After reading their ads I'm under impression they say Mt.Gox does not wait for confirmations when importing private keys. Is that so? If so, then it is a security vulnerability in Mt.Gox, which they exploit to do faster transfers.
276  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I think I got it on: November 01, 2012, 12:06:17 PM
This is where I get confused.  Am I supposed to convert that fund that I got now in MtGox to bitcoins?  Or does it automatically do that for me.
On MtGox you have to trade your dollars for bitcoins by placing a buy order.

You can place a Market order if you want it done instantly at whatever price people are currently asking.

Or you can place a limit order (by not ticking the "Market order" checkbox) where you specify the worst price you are prepared to buy at, but if you do that then you have the risk of nobody ever selling at that price.

Could I buy Bit coin keys from

Lets just say I buy 5 private bitcoin keys from
https://bitcoinkeys.wildapricot.org/Products

Transfer those private keys to Mt.Gox to have a total of 5 bitcoins in my Mt Gox account.

Then transfer those to my blockchain.info wallet?  Will that work fairly quick?  Or does Mt. Gox take awhile?  I just made an account on there and it seems simple enough?

I don't know why they are selling keys instead of sending bitcoins. Looks a little suspicious. In case they are legitimate, you can claim private keys directly with blockchain.info web client, no need to use Mt.Gox for that. Just go to "Import/Export", "Import Private Key". Make sure to empty (sweep) the private key though so that the person who gave you the private key can't take the money.
278  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Buy/Sell BTC for GBP Bank transfer. MtGox last 2% fee on: October 29, 2012, 10:06:21 PM
Bought 100 BTC more. Very quick and trustworthy!
279  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: P2P network loans in China. on: October 29, 2012, 05:55:56 PM
if the price of bitcoins doesn’t change, I will pay you 1.08BTC, if the price of bitcoins will change to 25yuan, I'll give you 1.16 Bitcoin
Isn't that supposed to be 2.16?
280  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: October 29, 2012, 12:37:41 AM
Fake wall. Notice how its placed exactly right under the current ask. AKA he really doesn't want to buy any bitcoins.

That could easily have happened by accident. Here is how:
* One person puts ask at 10.65999;
* Another person tries to outask the first one and puts another ask at 10.65998;
* "Mr. M" comes and creates a buy order without specifying the price manually. Mt. Gox defaults to the best ask price, which is 10.65998. The order is partially filled, the rest you can see on the screenshot.

But each spike is a either new miner or an old miner Up-ing their rig
Huh  Huh Joking, or what? It's variance in luck, not in hashpower.
