If I asked you that exact question in July/August of 2013, what would you answer be?

Well in July and August I was telling people there would be at least 3 or 4 Petahash on the network by end of 2013, and was getting called a hyper-exaggerating panic monger.

Think we had around 10 Peta going into Jan.

So since my recent projections tend to agree with 20 billion diff around the time when you might expect Neptunes to hit your doorstep, and I was off by a factor of 2.5 before, lets say worst case 50 billion ...

It is hard to predict.  Today manufacturers might ship what was ordered but they can also produce more H/W to deploy it in their (3rd party) cloud hashing.  So the retail number of units is probably a fraction of what is actually being produced.  We have seen it with bitfury.  Now H/W companies sell cloud hashing contracts so we will never know how much hashing power they will be adding and how fast.

But just looking at the retail H/W orders, we're looking at least 5+ fold increase within the next 3-6 months.  Hashing power will be consolidated then destroyed by more efficient h/w, then the cycle will start again...

All this talk about refunds...   why?   Giving up with mining, just leave the thread.    My 4 Neptunes....

I paid 12 BTC for my Neptune.  With refund I'll be getting about 16.

Unless you buy back today, you don't know what the price would be when you get the cash (in two-three weeks).

+ 1

Got 16.12 for my $13200.  Just waiting for the refund.

For the obvious reasons this strategy is valid only if price of bitcoin stays the same or goes up.
If tomorrow BTC is $500 you have no recourse, but to hold BTC or sell at a loss.

I already made 4 coins (well, after I actually get the wire from KNC) without even owning a Neptune.

Regardless of the bitcoin price to fiat, I have a 4 coins profit in this Neptune adventure.
I'm not sure people who receive Neptunes will be able to say the same.

2623  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: January 23, 2014, 04:09:37 PM

It's unfortunate but true, that this is the eventual direction Bitcoin is going. A more people-centric crypto coin would be something like scrypt which is much harder to 'simplify hashing' but not hard enough that it becomes a chore.

I've always felt Bitcoin would be the foundation, but we would see better things down the road.

what were you going to do once all the bitcoins are done mining anyway?

Blocks will still have transaction fees.  So you'll be mining those.

Personally I think the difficulty is going to jump at least 10 fold by the time Neptunes are delivered.
Would you sell 300GH for 16 coins today?  I would, that is why I asked for a refund.

BTW, the difficulty might jump 15 or 20 fold.  I used 10 just to give you some idea.
2626  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: January 23, 2014, 02:10:10 PM

I have sent the bank details and will let you know how long it takes to arrive. Lucy says 3 to 10 days so i guess KnC are processing the requests straight away and the time it takes it the normal wire transfer time

Same here.  Kurt from knc replied in 5 hours.  I sent my wire details.  He replied within minutes: "Your refund will be processed shortly"
We'll see...

Think again. $40k gets you 5 TH delivered next week. By the time you get the Neptunes, difficulty will be much higher. 5 TH now is far more profitable than 12 TH several months from now.
5th next week? Who sells them?
25+ Antminers from Bitmain.
https://www.bitmaintech.com/product.htm
3th of Antminers = 5kw (by taking 300watts per Antminer) = 31.654BTC (without shipping) = 25.8k $
3th of Neptunes = 2.5kw = 14.6BTC = 12k $

Two times more $$$ and watts for the same hash-power.

There is a really big difference here. You really can't even get a Neptune for at least another several months so why even compare right now?

All my friends requested refunds also for their Neptunes. In the bunch I think there was like 18 of them. Don't be surprised if you see some go on sale or we hear some news from KNC now. Once they see their very loyal customer base is dumping them out I'm pretty sure we'll eventually hear some thing from them soon. They only have one spokesperson here who isn't a sales person and can't really confirm on anything since all decisions are made by Sam. Only a matter of time we'll hear something. Once you are a millionaire and see possible money that could be yours leaving your bank account it starts to make you worry, no matter how much you have.

+1

I asked for a refund for my batch 1 order 14xxx today...No way they will make any money.

Don't forget to discount antminers with profits they will make until Neptune is in your hands.

I'd not buy Avalons. You'll run out of circuits very quickly.

Buy the most energy efficient pre-order you can afford, pay in fiat.  Drop to your knees and pray the BTC price goes through the roof.
That is the only way you'll make money.

BTW, I'd keep those 50 coins. By buying with BTC you are essentially selling them.  Ask yourself this question?
Would I sell BTC for $810 3-6 months from now?, if the answer is yes, go ahead and pay with BTC.
2631  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: No ROI on future Mining, its a FACT! on: January 05, 2014, 03:36:14 AM
Well for one you assume a lot about the future difficulty. Just because the difficulty is doubling every month now doesn't mean it will continue to do so. I personally don't believe we'll see 10 billion until at least june-july, and start plateauing after that.

So difficulty projections are religion now? Difficulty will be doubling every month until all 98%+ coins are mined.  Why would you think the difficulty increase would slow down?
The hardware will be produced and deployed.  Older hardware will continue to run until mining profit is there.  You honestly believe people will stop buying or manufacturers will stop making the hardware?

I think there will be more irrational actors entering bitcoin (and alt) space.  These folks will not stop buying mining hardware just because you think they should.
2632  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Can you have 2 PSU's connected to 1 Rig? on: January 04, 2014, 10:42:59 PM
if you use risers and the dual-psu. However you're paying for risers and Add2PSU adapter that will be worthless when you end mining

You don't need Add2PSU.  Just use paper clip to short green and black wires in 24 pin ATX connector.  Plug both PSUs to the same power bar/surge protector and flip the switch to turn both of them at the time.  That adapter is useless.

You are right about that 3 cards per motherboard simplifies things.   No support racks to hold the GPUs.  One PSU per rig.
But if you are building 10+ rigs, space is a factor so you want to run more than 3 cards per motherboard.  Ideally, 5-6 cards per system.
Whatever you can squeeze on the same 15A@120V circuit.
2633  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How long have you run cgminer without crashing for? on: January 04, 2014, 06:48:43 PM
I run mine for 2 weeks, then I usually restart, update windows, update virus protection.....

I would disable windows update , firewall and virus "protection" if I were you.  They will cause more problems than they will solve.
Why you need a virus protection on a mining rig?

Once you have a stable system, clone the drive, create a system restore point and do not touch it, and don't let any software update it in any way.
2634  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Can you have 2 PSU's connected to 1 Rig? on: January 04, 2014, 06:05:50 PM
250MB/s PER LANE

Yes, I know, but is this sufficient enough? Smiley

Also, lets say the card has PCI-e v1.0 x1 and GPU us PCI-e v3.0 x16. Is PCI-e backwards compatible? Will it work or do I need v.3.0 motherboard too?

miner loads KBs  to GPU kernel to execute,  the responses are very small.  Passing bytes back and forth.

1MB/s would be more than enough.

You can put 1.0 device in 3.0 slot or 3.0 device in 1.0 slot.  The result is the same: 1.0 device and speed.

Yes, you can use 1x -1x in any of the PCI-e slots.

You mean You can use 1x-1x in 16x GPU card when slot is 1x?

1x-1x in any slot.  Some motherboards might require to short two pins.

will using 1x - 1x instead of 16x-1x affect hashrate in any way, and why?
and same question for 16x slot -  will using 1x - 1x instead of 16x-16x affect hashrate too?
No.  PCIe 3.0 transfer rate is 985 MB/s PER LANE in each direction.  That is more than enough for mining.
So 1x is all you need.

Maybe home builders should get on it.  We have dining rooms, powder rooms, baby rooms, reading rooms....

I think it is time they put in "computer data center rooms", with 100A panels, independent AC, home automation panels etc.

2640  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitcoin difficulty eventually linear growth? on: January 04, 2014, 03:26:31 PM
Even if a 1TH/s miner was produced every minute the difficulty would only increase about 212M per day. If we assume an exponential growth rate of 20% per difficulty change, the increase in hash rate would exceed the production rate of miners in early June. The growth in difficulty will become linear.

Why would it be linear? I don't get it.    The production capacity of 28nm (or 14nm) products can be increasing at exponential rate.  As long as human population increases at exponential (or near exponential) rate why would production (of asics or anything else) not be in step.  It has been so far.

We still have enough resources on this rock to have a good exponential run for another 75-100 years or so.

There will be nothing linear about it in our lifetimes.  Babies are born every minute and every minute there is a teenager somewhere who discovers crypto currencies and wants to make some money.

Technically any growth could be considered exponential even if very little. My question is will growth slow down from the 30% per change we are seeing now? I think we are currently in the "bitcoin gold rush" and just like the real gold rush we could see a bunch of the miners drop out5 leaving only the most efficient operations.

Gold rush will continue at least until 98% of coins are mined.  We are at what? 50-60%.  The miners don't drop out.  They upgrade their hardware.

Penetration of bitcoin is very small.  It will continue to attract more and more miners in years to come.  Nothing will slow this down.  Greed is good.
