26443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Views on Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) on: July 18, 2016, 03:33:57 PM
This is against Bitcoin principle of bitcoin being digital cash. When you transact cash with someone you don't know who the person is. We don't need this and certainly not at a protocol level, this will only destroy bitcoin's privacy. BIP75 is trash and will never happen.
So it's like showing my passport every time I pay cash? Thanks but no thanks!
If I wanted to reveal my identity I could use my creditcard or a bank transfer instead of Bitcoin.
26444  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Buying BTC in Ireland or ANYPLACE at fair price! on: July 18, 2016, 03:31:07 PM
bout 616 euro a BTC.... When today's rate is average is 596.53 euro.
It makes no sense to look at the average price, it's the current price that counts. I like using kraken.com exchange, it gives the best rates of any site I've seen so far. I assume it's available in Ireland using IBAN. Current price: EUR 616.
26445  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Philippine government will soon regulate bitcoin operations in their country on: July 18, 2016, 03:19:21 PM
But I don't think the Philippine government can do much, judging by everything else they do.
If they make their internet a bit slower, bitcoin won't work anymore Cheesy

On a serious note: they can regulate the exchanges of course. Even without living there I know coins.ph, that's how big/famous it is. I read about it on multiple locations.
I don't even think regulation is a bad thing. Illegal trading will continue anyway, and government approved legal trading could be an incentive for more users.
Considering how expensive it is to send money to/from the Philippines, Bitcoin can very well be competitive for overseas workers.

26447  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining in 20 years time on: July 18, 2016, 11:41:10 AM
There will be no miners in 20 years because subsidy is to small to pay mining and bitcoin developers don't allow enough on chain transactions to maintain enough mining to keep the network safe, so bitcoin will be irrelevant or forked into POS.

They can always cancel halving in the interim (which is a must-do thing if they want Bitcoin to go on)

The transaction fee is quite high now. It is almost 1 bitcoin at some blocks. In the next few years, it will be even higher.

That is related to block size.
If there is consensus to increase block size, there will be less competition and less transaction fees.

If I get it right, this means that miners are not particularly interested in increasing the block size? In other words, that's the reason (one of) why it hasn't been increased so far?
This is my interpretation too. Miners don't benefit directly from larger blocks. But larger blocks are needed to allow more people to use Bitcoin, and more users will ultimately lead to a higher price, which benefits miners.

I don't think that miners collectively really care so much for future income, especially if it means sacrificing current revenue. In other words, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush
I didn't realize this before, but indeed, it makes sense. So we're stuck with small blocks because miners are short sighted focussing on todays income only.
Mining hardware becomes obsolete very fast, caused by an increase in difficulty. This is an extra reason for miners not to think ahead much.
I used to think Satoshi covered all major parts of Bitcoin, but this may be something he didn't anticipate.

26449  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Eth hardfork incoming - Race to the exits? on: July 17, 2016, 08:25:58 PM
After the hard fork, people are more confident about the Ethereum. So I think the price will rise as a result.
The hard fork shows you can't trust Ethereum, and you can't trust Smart Contracts. It also shows a central authority has all the power, making the DAO not "Decentral" as the name would suggest.
If I would have invested in the DAO, I would indeed sell all. Then again, I sold my (not so much) Ethereum long time ago.

I really hope Ethereum gets punished for doing a hard fork, forking for financial gain is exactly what a cryptocurrency shouldn't do.

26451  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Memorizing Private Key on: July 17, 2016, 02:04:57 PM
But i found a good way to by pass it. I have divided my passphrase in 3 elements and store it on 3 different devices So in times I need it, hackers need to hack all 3 to get my private key which is nearly impossible since 1 is offline always.
Did you also create 3 different backups? Now you have 3 points of failure: if you lose/break one of the devices, your private key is inaccessible.
26452  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is stealing Bitcoin illegal? on: July 17, 2016, 08:49:56 AM
Stealing is illegal. Period.

Let's say I generate a new address and by some miracle it has Bitcoin already in it belonging to somebody else. Is it legal to just take it? I understand those odds are very low, no need to lecture me, I'm just interested.
The fact that you ask the question means you need to be lectured on the odds Cheesy
The odds are designed in such a way that it will not happen. I mean never ever!

So change the question: what if you manage to copy someone's private key, is it illegal to take the money? Yes of course! But posession of a private key is also the only way to prove ownership. It makes me curious what will happen when two people were to claim the same ownership in front of a judge.
26453  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in the banks?! on: July 17, 2016, 08:44:37 AM
I've actually been thinking that if i collect a bit more coins, it might become a good idear to store my paper wallets in a safe deposit box at the local bank. This way, i am safe from home invaders. If somebody breaks into my house in the middle of the night, and asks for my private keys, i can honestly tell them they're at the bank.
I don't feel the need to be honest to home invaders.
Good luck finding a random house that owns Bitcoins! And even if you do own them, you can have as many different wallets as you want. Nobody can ever tell how many you own, unless you put them in one location, for instance a safe deposit box.

Is it possible that Bitcoin can be deposited in the banks in the near future? I mean like any other currencies that can be deposited and withdraw in the banks.
To answer the question that started this topic: if you call an exchange a bank, you can already deposit your bitcoins to that bank. It depends on what you call a bank: here all banks have government guarantees in case they go bankrupt. An exchange doesn't have any guarantees, if they go Mt.Gox, your bitcoins are gone.

If you want a bank to do what banks do with bitcoin, that means they'll lend out much more bitcoins than they own. Say 1000 people each put 1BTC in their account, then the bank can easily give 1000 people a 10BTC loan! As long as people don't withdraw the 10BTC but leave it in their own account. Sounds weird? How many people withdraw their mortgage money in cash?
26454  Other / Meta / Re: Banning Newbies from requesting loans? on: July 17, 2016, 08:35:42 AM
How do you want to enforce this? Give Mods more work?

Here is a radical suggestion. Ban all Bitcoin loans.
We're all (supposed to be) adults. And even if we're not adults, it's a good life lesson to learn with small mistakes before you make big mistakes.
If someone wants to give out a loan, that's entirely their own decision and risk. I've never loaned or borrowed Bitcoins and I don't plan to do so, but if someone else wants to, let them!

Plus, the loan-topics and Trust with it are great to read while eating popcorn!
26455  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What you always do after you lose in Gambling? on: July 17, 2016, 08:32:31 AM
My first reaction used to be going all-in to chase losses and "win it back". That didn't end well a few times.
My latest approach is to withdraw all when I'm losing to limit my losses.
Chasing losses is irrational: if you could "win it back", why didn't you do that in the first place? After losing your chances are still the same as when you started.
26456  Economy / Digital goods / Re: BUYING THEBOT.NET ACCOUNT on: July 17, 2016, 08:30:02 AM
I have an account for years now, but recently they changed it to "New Member" and I have limited access (what's up with that?!).
I don't use it anymore, so if you want it you can change the username to something else than Loyce for 5.00 USD.
26457  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: July 16, 2016, 08:52:13 PM
Does anyone know if the vanity pool website is still operational and paying for solving various work? Is it legit? i thought i read a thread a while back that it was stealing private keys or something? Or was this a different website?
The pool is not stealing anything, it uses split keys.
The one that's stealing addresses is also advertising it big in his signature on bitcointalk. He mainly posts in threads that don't show his -8 Red Trust, so he is probably still making new victims up to now. (I think it would be good if bitcointalk shows Trust-ratings in all topics).

if you are unlucky, it can take 6.2 years.
If you're unlucky, you may never find it!

26459  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin Vanity Addresses! on: July 16, 2016, 11:50:00 AM
AFAIK core also has this functionality (I hope).
I can confirm this, I've used it to use a vanity address as stake here.

Blockchain.info can also sign a message with any imported private key.
26460  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Memorizing Private Key on: July 15, 2016, 04:49:49 PM
Relying on your memory for a private key sounds to me like a good way to lose your funds.
Why would you even want to? You can store a private way in any format you want, anywhere you want. Write it under your car seat, inside your fridge and on a few more locations. Or much easier: get a BIP38 encrypted key, don't bother about keeping the key secure, just keep your password secure.
There's a topic somewhere with 1 BTC for whoever guesses the 6 digit code! After a year, nobody guessed it. If you make it 8 random digits, it's still a lot easier to remember than a complete private key, and I expect the chance of someone guessing it to be much less likely than the chance of you forgetting a private key from your memory.
