281  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: question on using localbitcoins.com paying in cash on: March 06, 2016, 01:35:53 PM
hi, i'm paying in cash though, is it possible for seller to FIRST put his bitcoins into escrow at our meeting, i hand him money, then he releases into my localbitcoins account which is insta

Yes, you give him your BTC address and he puts his funds into LBC escrow with that address. That guarantees that he can't use those coins for another transaction at least for the time being. Later, when he meets you and sees your cash, all you has to do is press the green Release Coins button while taking your cash. Text messages / emails will be sent out to confirm the completion of transaction.

Note that it is not necessary for him to release the coins to your localbitcoins BTC address. The address you give hime could be from any wallet.

Edit: There are some bullshit comments from people on this thread who have no idea how localbitcoins escrow works. Don't listen to them. It is not the same as some guy on the forum escrow. It is automated unless something goes wrong.

282  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: question on using localbitcoins.com paying in cash on: March 06, 2016, 01:00:33 PM
I've never made a bitcoin transaction so this will be my first, need some advice!

i need to pay in cash, $500 worth of USD to buy bitcoins

is this the way i should do this and standard?

we meet in public place
i show him the cash
he transfers to my wallet
i verify it's in my wallet
i hand over the money

please let me know what you suggest is the best way to protect myself
if you do that you need to wait until your bitcoin get confirmed because you don't know when your bitcoin transaction will failed and back to the sender due to few factor,1 confirmation is enough but 2 confirmation is better

If it is a funded transaction, the sender will be localbitcoins. I prefer a funded transaction as opposed to one where the seller sends you coins directly from his wallet. That way if there are any issues regarding non-confirmation you can take it up directly with localbitcoins support instead of having to hunt down the seller.

For example, once the seller releases the transaction from localbitcoins escrow and the buyer sees the tx broadcast to his wallet, the buyer can give the cash and both parties can walk away immediately.
283  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blocks are full. on: March 03, 2016, 10:06:37 AM
Membool dropped to zero less than hour ago today suddenly? Is that a glitch in the data?

https://tradeblock.com/bitcoin/

My guess it that it is a glitch. They could have rebooted their node.

No two nodes have identical mempools. I filter out low-fee and zero-fee transactions on my node and yet my (v0.12.0 capped) mempool was always full.
284  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 15btc transaction fee, big mistake on: March 03, 2016, 12:10:49 AM
It would be real nice if it turned out to be the guy who was flooding the network with spam transactions.
285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: EU Plans To End Anonymity For Bitcoin And Prepaid Card Users on: February 28, 2016, 01:18:19 PM
So now I need to give out my ID card to the kiosk guy I am buying a pre-paid card form?

Well in the US what they make you do is register your pre-paid card with the bank online before you can fully unlock it. You can still buy reloads from the kiosk anonymously but you usually can't use them to refill an unregistered card. It wasn't like this just a couple of years ago.
286  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: RPi Zero BTC Node? on: February 28, 2016, 04:30:31 AM

Your not helping network running a full node on a raspberry pi.

Why?

If you have a full node that is slow in relaying blocks and transactions, you are using up valuable connections to other nodes that could have been used by somebody else. Those nodes that are connected to your slow node will probably receive blocks/transactions from other nodes first.
287  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HELP? I am trying to decide on... on: February 26, 2016, 08:09:31 AM
Should I upgrade to Classic or stay with Core? I can't decide what to do. I am scared to get on the worng version. What is the good version?

With all the new stuff available in Core 0.12.0 I wonder why you'd even consider Classic an "upgrade"?
288  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core version 0.12.0 released on: February 25, 2016, 11:49:42 AM

we have the maxmempool setting.

With 0.11.2 I was getting what seemed to be a fragmented heap after running for weeks non-stop with a high number of connections. The workaround was a weekly restart. Let's see if this problem is fixed.
289  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Biometrics + Blockchain on: February 24, 2016, 11:57:49 AM
This kind of thing should be implemented independently and separately from the blockchain or protocol.
290  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin value is 440+ on: February 22, 2016, 08:59:24 AM
there will never be a red candle on any time frame, evar again. in fact there will never be a market sell!!1 bitcoin can only go up indefinitely

Yeah, those god damned parasites causing those squigly lines on the charts while trying to step ahead of the market - line them up against the wall and shoot them all.
291  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do you store your bitcoins? on: February 22, 2016, 07:54:36 AM
I use paper wallets to store my bitcoins... i have around 7 -10 wallets now, I use multiple just to make sure the others are safe when one wallet is hacked. I don't have much coins though, but that's the safest way i could think of right now to keep them safe.

Having too many paper wallets might pose an operational risk. The risk is that you might lose some of them or even forget about those that have too few BTC. If your private key generation method is solid there is really no point in having more keys than necessary. On the other hand if you generate private keys using a silly method (like using quotes Shakespeare) then all your keys are susceptible to hacking no matter how many you have.
292  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you still use fiat to buy things on Amazon.com? on: February 19, 2016, 11:42:55 AM
I use Amazon gift cards from Gyft as I can buy up to $2000 at a time and load them into my Amazon account. For me purse.io is a little too complicated to use the last time I looked at it. I guess if I were looking for discounts I would be using it more.
293  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Would miners switch, if most nodes where Classic nodes? on: February 18, 2016, 10:57:33 AM
Just wondering what you all thought.  I just seen that there are over a 1000 nodes that are Classic nodes now.  If most nodes where classic do you think miners would switch to classic and start mining bigger blocks?

They may switch to Classic if everyone is on it, but they could still put a soft 1MB limit on the blocks that they generate for performance reasons. It may be better to keep generating and propagating 1MB blocks efficiently than trying to generate 2MB blocks for the additional scrap fees and having those orphaned.
294  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Need ideas for a possible presentation... on: February 17, 2016, 07:47:42 AM
You cannot sync a blockchain if blocks are found every 10 minutes and it takes up to 21 minutes for a signal to reach from one node to another on the extreme edges of the network.

You'd need multiple chains for each region in space. Only nodes that are currently in low-latency communications with a particular chain's network should attempt to communicate with the blockchain in p2p mode. However, there should be a way for faraway nodes to receive block updates in read-only mode to receive a delayed sync (e.g., for audit purposes).

Some kind of transactional gateway would allow you to exchange coins from one chain to another. The transaction would take a long time to complete so you need to figure out how to minimize the risk of wildly fluctuating exchange risks for both counterparties. The price could crash by a large amount in 21 minutes - a universal chain where everyone has read/write p2p access would be super retarded.

Edit: There is also no reason why someone on earth cannot remotely own or operate a node/wallet on a Mars chain and vice versa. It just means that your "spend" command to your wallet/node takes a while to reach there.

295  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Surge Protection for several S7's on: February 15, 2016, 04:53:19 PM
You need to have the town inspect it when finished.
Depends on the scope of the work.  No inspections are needed to replace receptacles, switches, or light fixtures.  Inspections are required (more often determined by local codes) when major electrical work is performed such as running new circuits.  Anyone can change a circuit breaker - no inspection required.

State defines what codes apply.  Local jurisdictions determine what requires inspection.

Scope of the work determines if that town requires an electrical inspection.

Meanwhile, only an informed DIYer should do electrical work.  That means first learning from an electrician or from someone else who knows this stuff.  That means he is on site to observe you or demonstrate how it is done.  After you read how it should be done.

Any guy should have learned and be able to do the simple stuff.

I you want the work to be permanent, i.e. sell the house with it, it probably is best to get an electrician to do it. I am a former electrical engineer and certainly knew what I was doing when I added a second breaker panel and some additional circuits in my old house. However, I was not familiar with all the arcane codes and when I sold the house I had to have some of the wiring redone. The electrician doing the rework said that what I had done was safe, solid and even over-engineered. However it was not up to code in a few minor details.
296  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How much would you pay per month to run a full node? on: February 14, 2016, 02:09:37 AM
I would pay more than $30 a month for a virtual server with enough bandwidth, disk and I/O to run a full node. However, I would only run and control it myself and not have anyone else manage it for me. I also won't bother if there were other nodes already running in the subnet or ASN.
297  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: I am assuming that this would be the Place to find a pool developer or manager on: February 14, 2016, 12:37:50 AM
This means that if a block is found by the pool the reward will be greater than if you were to mine in a larger pool.

Do you just want bigger less frequent payouts? You can already do that with some pools.

Anyway the idea does not really make sense unless you are talking about Proportional Payout pools, which died back in 2011 due to pool hopping strategies adversely affecting this type of pool.
298  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: February 13, 2016, 04:54:38 PM
Another +25% diff increase is the nail in the coffin for home miners looking to profit (if it isn't completely dead already) without a new ultra efficient cheap home miner coming out on the market within the next 30 days or so (unlikely).

In the past year I've been home mining (plus small data center mining) for an average loss of 30%. In return I get freshly minted coins from Eligius or p2pool. Still beats going to shit places like Coinbase to buy your coins and have them track how you spend them. The S7 has probably allowed me to extend my home mining operation for another 6 months or so. As long as the loss is not too much I prefer to mine my coins rather than buy them.
299  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Genesis Mining on: February 06, 2016, 07:22:08 PM
They are still paying their newer contracts. However some of my contracts from almost a year ago (with the higher maintenance fees) already became worthless without having recovered the initial capital.
300  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How big is a bitcoin? on: February 06, 2016, 03:39:02 AM
bitcoin is no size .

I can guarantee that if you've been hitting up faucets and collecting enough Satoshis to add up to one Bitcoin then you would have one very large Bitcoin on the blockchain.
