Since FTC has the same genesis block as LTC, isn't FTC vulnerable to get contaminated/taken over by the LTC block chain?
What happens if someone with the LTC block chain connects to FTC?
Are there checkpoints in the FTC client?

This is not a concern as we have checkpoints hardcoded into the clients so it would not accept another chain.

You can always start a new chain from the genesis block of any of the coins which will create your own version. It is the checkpoints that stop anyone from trying to force on a fake chain.

There is more information on checkpoints in the link below.

282  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Feathercoin - Updates on: April 29, 2013, 08:25:17 PM
News
It has been an exciting but tiring weekend with the launch of Feathercoin on the Cryptonit exchange. Feathercoin is no longer just in the miners domain, now that it is on an exchange we can start working to get more services and merchants to accept it.

There is news of other exchanges supporting Feathercoin. Most interesting of all is a new exchange that is being created by Vircurex to support trading of younger crypto currencies. This new exchange will be called Virexa.com. This is really good news for the alternative crypto currency community and I would like to thank Vircurex for creating this for all of us.

Currency Code
After a lot of feedback from people about the currency code for Feathercoin, it has now become FTC. This is already a popular reference and is more inline with international standards like ISO 4217, though the standard does say the first two letters should be the country code. Perhaps one day the ISO will release a standard for crypto currencies. You can download the updated clients from the page here.

Website
I have been working on the official website with altmine2. You will know this chap from the popular Feathercoin mining calculator and network stats tools created out of the bounties. It seemed sensible to get altmine2 to work on the official site to bring everything together. Please check out the website from the link below, personally I think he has done some excellent work. If you need any professional website work done then altmine2 is your man.

Submitting Errors
If you spot any problems with any of the clients, downloads, source code or anything else please send me a PM.

Latest git pull of feathercoind does not compile:

Code:
obj/checkpoints.o: file not recognized: File truncated
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [feathercoind] Error 1

-MarkM-

Okay. I've just grabbed from GitHub and everything compiles fine on Debain.

If you let me know your exact distro I will try to recreate the problem?

This has been tested on Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, Win and Mac.

Could you delete your Feathercoin folder and pull fresh from GitHub and try again?

Okay, I cloned https://github.com/FeatherCoin/FeatherCoin.git

Copied makefile.unix to makefile.fedora17

Added -I../../deps/include to the DEFS and -L../../deps/lib to the LIBS += line so it uses my custom openssl that includes the elliptic curves that Fedora leaves out of their distributed openssl. Added BOOST_LIB_SUFFIX = -mt where the comment indicates.

That is all standard stuff I have to do for every *coin.

Then did

make USE_UPNP= -f makefile.fedora17

It does not get far before producing that error.

Are you maybe not compiling it without UPNP?

-MarkM-

On *nix I also disable UPNP. Can you try compiling with just the default packages?

Then again I'd doing the same as you on CentOS with OpenSSL. I also compile the latest boost on that distro too. I use export before running make, so export OPENSSL_INCLUDE_PATH=/path/to/ssl and OPENSSL_LIB_PATH=/path/to/ssl, plus the two exports for the Boost libs. I've got a long list of things to work on today but I will find the time to test FTC on Fedora 17 and get back to you.

Alas the client doesn't work for me!  I'm on Mac os 10.5.8 Sad

Can there not be a version for my 'antiquated' laptop?  It's only 5 years old!

Really sorry Matt but the Mac release is 10.6 or newer. You can still compile the Feathercoin-Qt application yourself.

By the way, Apple only support their current one one prior operating system. You need to be on 10.7 or newer for security updates.

Thanks erk and bushstar but I'm not technical enough to compile it myself.  My laptop works just fine, so not getting another.

Bitcoin and Litecoin clients work just fine on 10.5.8 , why not feathercoin?

The Feathercoin Mac build is 64-bit. The Bitcoin and Litecoin clients must have been built for 32-bit.

286  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Freicoin (FRC) Issues - Global or local to that exchange? on: April 28, 2013, 08:00:27 PM
If you go to your account on Cryptonit you can see a full history of all your trades.

CryptoCoin -> Exchange -> Order Details -> Select currency pair -> History

Using the wallet to move money does not mean that you cannot log it. Cryptonit says that they would like to release correspondence with maaku but has not gotten permission yet. This should mean that maaku can clarify what the issue is here.

Go talk to maaku to help Cryptonit or at least get him to explain what the issue is so perhaps the community can come up with a solution. Freicoin is open source and I'm sure maaku would appreciate any contributions.

I would be interested to know what the issue is and if there are any fixes.
287  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: FeatherCoin - New Litecoin based coin on: April 28, 2013, 07:40:24 PM
Cryptonit directly uses the bitcoin "move" RPC function to manage his user accounts.

What does this mean for you?

mugen isn't keeping any accounting records of what his customers are doing. So if one of his exchanges has a bug, like his Freicoin exchange did, he cannot determine what amounts all of his accounts should have. Mugen's exchange had this same massive bug where he lost customer funds when the site was in beta. He was advised to implement his exchange using external accounting & logs.

Had mugen built his exchange so that it kept accounting records and logs he wouldn't have had any problems trading Freicoin and other coins. Unfortunately, even if someone wanted to make all of his depositors whole they couldn't do it because he doesn't keep the records necessary to pay people back.

I strongly recommend you stay very far away from cryptonit for ANY coin.

That's strange, if you go to your account you can see a full history of all your trades on the site.

CryptoCoin -> Exchange -> Order Details -> Select currency pair -> History

I think Galambo is mixing this information with another issue.

289  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Feathercoin opening trade day 1FC = 0.05 LTC and going up on: April 28, 2013, 01:24:51 PM
It will be changed to FTC in the clients and released during the week.
290  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: FeatherCoin - New Litecoin based coin on: April 28, 2013, 01:20:23 PM
ISO-4217 states that the first two letters should be country code Smiley Perhaps one day an ISO for crypto currency will come out and I bet that will have three letters too.

I will update the clients to use FTC and publish in the week. No need to update but I will post back here when the change has been made.

So we are officially changing from FC to FTC? I want to make sure I promote the correct abbreviation.

It is official. We are changing to FTC taking on the family name from BTC and LTC. It seems right.

The site is getting a huge amount of traffic because of Feathercoin. If the site can sort out its growing pains then it could do well. However if it does not then this traffic will be lost when the next exchange supports Feathercoin.

There are some nice features on the site but needs usability testing.
293  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin developer just as lazy as the others. on: April 28, 2013, 09:54:53 AM
A newer release of Litecoin is actually be prepared. Coblee and other devs are working away but not as fast as we'd like. I mailed Coblee and asked him if he could let the community know his intentions but got no reply.
294  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Feathercoin opening trade day 1FC = 0.05 LTC and going up on: April 28, 2013, 09:48:14 AM
I did submitted a feature request for email withdrawal as another option. I first joined that exchange when Freicoin was introduced and noticed that there were a number of users complaining about the two-factor auth. The email on withdrawal function would be welcome, that is what I use elsewhere and I can still setup GAuth on my email if I wanted to.

Are there any desktop apps for GAuth? I took a look a while ago and did not find any so use my mobile.
295  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: blockchain is going to be MASSIVE for FC, whats the solution on: April 28, 2013, 08:15:44 AM
When you can use an ewallet you do not even have to care about downloading the block chain Smiley
So the coin is gona be under the control of 3-4 banks called ewallet

I'm pointing out that to save people having to host their own "bloated" Bitcoin, Litecoin or Feathercoin wallet they can use an ewallet and exchanges to hold coins.

This is not an issue for Feathercoin, it is an issue for all blockchain coins. Think about installing the Bitcoin client and waiting a day for the block chain to download. The entire community needs to work on this problem and will be solutions.
296  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: blockchain is going to be MASSIVE for FC, whats the solution on: April 28, 2013, 08:06:29 AM
There is not a problem here. The block chain will always continue to grow. Even after all the block rewards have gone miners will keep mining for the transactions.

Litecoin is exactly the same with faster blocks as it is not a problem. When you can use an ewallet you do not even have to care about downloading the block chain Smiley
297  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Feathercoin opening trade day 1FC = 0.05 LTC and going up on: April 28, 2013, 07:28:06 AM
I'm not even sure that we are supposed to be in the LTC/FTC exchange. It is not linked in the menus.

Seems like the site has been hit with a DDOS.

That's really good news Smiley

300  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: FeatherCoin - Updated Client - New Logo on: April 27, 2013, 11:59:16 AM
finally have downloaded the new client. Select folder view "large icons". Still see old icon.

I'm wondering if the ico is cached. This can happen, which results in the old icon showing. A quick fix I found for this is to go into folder options, select view, uncheck 'Hide protected system files', press apply, then check it again and hit reply.

Check your icon again then please let me know if it has updated.
