281  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] Working on a GPU miner for Primecoin, new thread :) on: September 19, 2013, 01:07:40 PM
If CPU mining is the only way forever, then you will face problems with huge botnets mining, and then maybe even 51%ing the network. With a GPU miner, the difficulty will rise sufficiently so that only specialized miners can take control of the network, specialized individual miners, making it more difficult to 51% the network because when it's individuals, you can't come to an agreement to 51% like that.

Well primecoin has been out for a few months now and its difficulty is currently very stable. It has been precisely 9.86 +/- 0.01 for a week or more (I think, from my manual checks. All the good graphing/data sites seem to be down or no longer updating).

If botnets were growing day in and out we'd see diff rising but we aren't. It's unlikely that botnets would be growing and other users would be dissapearing at exactly the same rate so I don't think that is a likely possibility either.

of course. it just remains a possibility.

283  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] What do you think about the Primecoin GPU Miner? on: September 19, 2013, 04:02:56 AM
Let's try not to rant about him here.
284  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] What do you think about the Primecoin GPU Miner? on: September 18, 2013, 10:37:13 PM
I agree. He could have at least communicated more often. I feel as if he does not care very much about the GPU Miner, to be honest. But I am not too sure about that.

I'm ambivalent because I'm more worried about the current exchange rate of XPM and how its a loss to mine unless you have very efficient CPUs, very cheap power or both. Even the VPS boys won't be happy lately, most are running at a loss from what I can see.

Also are you being honest with yourself when you say "I don't have any feelings of my own on it, because I didn't donate anyways." because your Last Posts seem to indicate the GPU miner is the main thing you discuss?

It is, but that's because I only check this forum when I am bored. No interesting stuff is happening in all other threads I posted in. Tongue

I admit I have a pet peeve towards mtmlr, but it's just personal, nothing about the GPU miner.

Poll results are coming in and I find them rather interesting. I wonder how many more votes It will get!
285  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] Working on a GPU miner for Primecoin, new thread :) on: September 18, 2013, 08:09:16 PM
Abandon Thread!

Consider this thread abandoned! Tongue

It was fun while it lasted.
Maybe we should offer a new bounty, held in escrow, which will be released to a new developer (or team) which can improve this miner so it meets certain pre-set goals in terms of performance and stability. We could even put a reasonable time limit that if the pre-set goals are not met, the bounties are returned to the donators.

I would provide a few coins to such an endeavor - we could use the forum moderator Saltyspoon as the escrow or someone else trusted in the community like John K. or Dooglus to hold the funds.

I, too, have thought of this. However... it would be VERY difficult to carry out, I did not consider it plausible to happen, so I did not embrace it.

If you do this, I wish you luck in your endeavors and hope you have success with it.

Anyways, I have created a poll to see the collective emotions of the people of the forum in regards to this miner. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=296780.0
286  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [POLL] Opinions about the Primecoin GPU Miner on: September 18, 2013, 06:58:56 PM
Hello,

As many of you know, A while ago, mtmlr started working on a Primecoin GPU Miner, and he received a lot of money in donations from people, where when they donate they receive early beta access to the miner.

The beta-access period is now over, and the miner source is released, but the miner doesn't seem to work quite yet.

Some people are very mad about this, Others are not. I don't have any feelings of my own on it, because I didn't donate anyways.

So I've been wondering. What is are your feelings on this situation? Take the poll so that we can see what are the collective feelings of this forum are. Smiley

Note: Please not hating on Mtmlr or anyone else here. Hate posts will be deleted. Create your own thread if you are mad.

Will upload here: https://github.com/mtrlt/Reaper_prime

As for leadership, I am not up for the job. I'm not a leader, nor do I want to become one.

Lol... You've got to be kidding me...

For 1 BTC, at least I got a laugh out of this scam.

I have to give credit to ReCat.  He called it from the beginning.
Sometimes it takes a pessimists eyes to see these things.

Principle demonstrated at its finest.

So, What are the guesses with how long it'll take before the miner will actually mine? Anyone got a guess to throw up there. My guess is 2 more months.
289  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Bitspend on: September 17, 2013, 02:09:45 AM
As far as I am aware bitspend has been unable to operate in any fashion for a good long while. I think your first order got lost and then they went out of business and were unable to respond later on.
290  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitmit - Bitcoin shopping mall - Bitcoin market place - Bitcoin auction house on: September 16, 2013, 02:57:36 PM
I'm getting quite frustrated with some buyers on BitMit. They pay the escrow and take my digital product, but only after I send them several messages and more than 48-hours has passed do they randomly release the BTC from escrow, all without any communication, and then they don't even bother to leave me positive feedback! One of them still hasn't even released my BTC from his escrow yet and I'm unsure if he ever will.

Is there any way to leave negative feedback for these fickle-minded buyers or otherwise avoid them? I think we can all agree that we don't want to deal with them. Is there any other form of protection as a seller from these people?

What is this mythical CPD everyone is talking about? I can't find a mention of it on the first page. (CTRL+F ing)
292  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] Working on a GPU miner for Primecoin, new thread :) on: September 16, 2013, 02:44:59 PM
Yeah, please release something that is able to find blocks and doesn't crash after 5sec-1min.

Hahaha. For ten thousand dollars? You gotta be kidding me. Wink

Hope everyone is enjoying their ten-thousand dollar miner. :3

I am very glad I did not donate.
293  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XPM] Working on a GPU miner for Primecoin, new thread :) on: September 16, 2013, 12:34:25 AM
I wonder how many months after the public release it will take until the GPU miner is actually mining at least a bit faster than the CPU Miner.

I'm guessing never. This project was a complete failure and a borderline scam.
I don't know about that - just need some good coders who love primecoin to take up the project. Hopefully mtrlt will stay involved and provide leadership.

He said borderline. That means not necesarilly but it sure feels like it. Absolutely 0 of the donators got any kind of ROI whatsoever.

Guys, In case if you don't know, it isn't really just to throw money at snowden. It's going to fund Snowden's legal defense team. Although it's possible it may also be used personally by snowden to support himself if he gets in financial trouble. What do I know.

Wikileaks says its for the legal defense team.

Will be continuing for another month.

Well, No wonder my rack server was mining so many blocks! Although it's from 2006 the CPU beat even the fastest i7 at prime numbers.

Interesting stuff!

I think for primecoin integer math is also important. IIRC mikaelh has mentioned this before (specifically in regards to integer / floating point ops). I don't think that cpumark prime score translates directly to primecoin performance. How many watts on your rack? In my experience servers are not very efficient but if I recall correctly your server (from previous pics) was mostly just motherboard+CPUs so perhaps its more efficient than most systems from the big vendors (HP, IBM, Dell etc). I see a lot of rackmount servers that use 200+ watts of juice while idling and I wonder where exactly that power is going... Oh and keep in mind that a 3770k can overclock 25-40%+ without much effort or additional cooling. I think that cpumark disregards submitted results where an overclock is present to prevent skewing of the results.

It's a Dual-Processor Motherboard. Each CPU pulls a maximum of 50 watts. About 220 watts are drawn when on full load, 170 otherwise. I measured it with a Killawatt meter on site.

You can't really beat that when considering I got the entire server for just 150 bucks. Tongue
