When you do things like this, there is a chance that you leak your keys! Listen to this guy! You made so many mistakes..... First, it sounds like you've entered your seed phrase on at least one website. You should NEVER do that! I can't emphasize enough how bad this is. You should take handling private keys much more serious. Second: signing a message on mobile is annoying. Third: why do you want to sign a message anyway? The address you're signing from is empty. You can install as many wallets as you want, get a new wallet with a new seed phrase on a computer and sign an address there. Oh, and first: forget about your current wallet. Create a new one, move all your funds. Keep you old wallet, but mark it COMPROMISED and never use it again. |

It's a fiber connection that has pretty good speed and is economical too but I don't have any idea about the high ping factor but it used to be in this way. It's normal for ping to go up when you max out your upload. |

If a scammer steals money and leaves escrow to deal with the fallout (~) then I don't think this counts as the flagged user making the victims whole That's the part open for discussion. You could argue the escrow was part of the user planning ahead for contingencies. Maybe we need to have new flag type created for cases like this, because there is chance this could repeat again in future. In that case, it may work to require 10+ Supporters for that Flag, to make it really a rare thing. But I doubt we'll see another Flag just for a once-in-4-years anomaly. This whole case just doesn't look anything like any other scam I seen in my life Agreed. It's intriguing. I think it's better just to expand the operation of a 3 type flag on the situations like this one if they will ever again happen. Any suggestion on a better wording for the Flag, that also still matches other existing Flags? I know this question is directed to Theymos, but let me also give my view. That's why I asked it in public This kind of business is based on huge trust since they handle a lot of money. If it wasn't for the escrow fund (which by the way is unusual since we see so many services around here not depositing any escrow fund), then there would be so many victims around and who knows how many more victims there might be. Correct. I've seen arguments that the service used an escrow to "buy" trust. On the other hand, the escrow actually helped so the "trust" it may have "bought" was deserved in this case. I think this is similar to a person asking for a loan using collateral, but then they default the loan. You use collateral to get your money back, but your perspective and trust toward the borrower will definitely change forever. Not really: a borrower who needs to send collateral didn't have any trust to begin with. |

Let's say someone picked a low-volume altcoin that nobody uses, and right before the deadline places a $200 market buy order. He buys everything there is to buy, the price skyrockets, and suddenly his portfolio is worth $10,000.
I'm not much into altcoins and I can't easily check if there is a coin for which this would be possible, but it seems like a scenario that can happen.

It's a centrally controlled premined shitcoin that abandoned it's USP the moment it was convenient for the creator. After that, it got worse by spamming and scamming thousands if not millions of people with made-up useless tokens. That's not how crypto is supposed to be. Back on topic: If you don't want to run your own node, then why not just use the GUI wallet from https://www.getmonero.org/ and connect to a third party node? I didn't know that's a possibility. I'll have to look into the differences between GUI wallet and Feather. I quickly checked Feather yesterday, but couldn't find how to import a private key. Or alternatively, Coinomi (of all places!) has forked Ian Coleman's paged and implemented the same thing. Question @theymos: what if a custodial website owner ended all communications, disabled withdrawals, still accepts deposits, but had enough money in escrow to cover all current victims? I'm talking about the whirlwindmoney case. As far as I know, this is the first time this happened since the Flag system was created. Based on this: Creating or supporting a scammer flag is actively affirming a set of pretty clear fact-statements. I think the type 3 Flag can't be Supported in this case. But I also know it's one large deposit away from someone losing their money. It needs a big red warning banner, but (the way I read it) can't get one right now. It's a rare case that doesn't seem to fit the Flag system, and a Newbie warning Flag seems insufficient. |

I made another part bold: there are no damages anymore. No more damages that we know. We can't really Flag someone for things we don't know. The moment someone creates a new type 3 Flag with new evidence, I'll gladly Support it again. However, I remain of the opinion that one should not strictly adhere to every letter or rule if they indicate the same thing. At least while the ww service is active with deposit enabled and withdrawal disabled. Every kind of warning is needed in such cases. This might be worth getting a clarification from theymos on the intended use of the Flag system in this case. As far as I know the Flag system is the only part of the Trust system which is supposed to stick to strict rules. Technically speaking, I think my Flag is still valid. Here's why: I made a deposit of 0.004 BTC with the aim of coin mixing, and I expected the same amount of BTC (minus fees) as stated in the contract (Whirlwind official ANN and Whirlwind.money FAQ). On August 14, 2023, the value of 1 BTC was around $29,500. This makes the equivalent of my deposit about $117.50. What eventually happened is that on August 18th and 20th, I received a total of 104 DAI from the escrow, which is equivalent to $104.00. So, as I see it, Whirlwind still violated a written contract, resulting in damages, specifically because: - My BTC was exchanged for an altcoin without my consent and at a less favorable rate.
- My coins weren't mixed as expected using their service.
- My anonymity was compromised because I was forced to share private information with third parties.
- I had to put in extra effort and time (sending multiple inquiries to their customer support, PMs, making my case public, contacting the escrow custodian, gathering evidence, etc.) to claim my compensation rights.
I'd argue all this falls under the "make the victims of this act roughly whole" part. When you received the amount from escrow, you could have used it to buy the same amount of Bitcoin again. It's not perfect, but your loss was (more or less) covered. There's another reason: Flags should encourage people to do the right thing, and when that happens, the Flag becomes invalid. The unique thing here is that WWM didn't do anything but it happened anyway. The only thing stopping me from going for the "hit by a bus"-scenario is the message WWM sent to Hhampuz. You're reading this wrong. The AND is required for Supporting the Flag, which means you can't Support it if only one of the parts is true. So if there's damage, AND it wasn't forgiven, the Flag can be Supported. But if there's no damage AND it wasn't forgiven, the Flag becomes invalid. Or, if there is damage AND it was forgiven, the Flag also becomes invalid. Think of it as a logical operator. While I trust Loyce judgment I think he got it wrong this time, removing vote may be "ok", but going as far as opposing the flag is surely wrong IMO, it is like saying the whole story was a lie and WW did nothing bad That's not what Opposing a Flag means. Opposing a Flag only means that that specific Flag is incorrect at that moment. There are more scammers on Bitcointalk who have many inactive Flags, until they received a correct one which was Supported. Inactive Flags mean nothing, neither good nor bad. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see a big red warning shown to everyone above their topics. But it should be based on a Flag I can agree on, based on the rules that the Flag system was created on. whirlwindmoney did not make the victims of this act roughly whole, AND it is not the case that all of the victims forgave the act. But: You strictly adhere to the rules of which flag is for which case That is literally how the Flag system is supposed to be used. Read theymos' post on the Flag system.
