2881  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Noob Question of the day: explanation of the block chain? on: June 25, 2011, 09:04:20 PM
Instead of looking at the Bitcoin app as a 'wallet' that holds 'coins' it's better to look at it as a 'bankbook' that holds 'ledger entries'. Each address does not 'hold' coins but rather is a ledger entry that describes the ownership of those coins. The sum total of those ledger entries is what is displayed as your Balance in the Bitcoin application. What you are describing as 'coins being sent from two addresses' is really the combination of two ledger entries in the same bankbook which total 21.881 BTC.

wow, very good way to put it and very clear thank you again!
2882  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Noob Question of the day: explanation of the block chain? on: June 25, 2011, 09:02:06 PM
There is usually several adresses in your wallet.
If you have used more than one adress to receive coins, your coins will be spread over those adresses.
When you do a payment it will pick coins randomly from your adresses.

I've seen blocks with more than 10 sent from adresses in one payment.

thanks I had no idea about this very helpful!  Grin
2883  Other / Beginners & Help / Noob Question of the day: explanation of the block chain? on: June 25, 2011, 08:14:52 PM
If you want to point to some good resources that explains these things that is fine also ... but having a look over at this blockchain:

http://blockexplorer.com/address/1JwrdAyRGhp5xJW69rCimPtocdRo3bc5gj

I see 2 sent payment address's ( this was a btc transfer to mt.gox from mybitcoin)

why is their 2 sent payment address's ?

Thanks for any clarification.

1) Yes, that's a Parody. Imperi's a mildly amusing troll.

2) Clearcoin is an escrow house. If you're that paranoid, don't use an automated one.

1.) probably not a good thing to be making light off don't you agree ?

2.) why is he saying this OP and himself do deserve our donations if he isn't serious ?

"The developers forgot to implement fraud protection into this currency, and so poor individuals like myself have no recourse after being hacked. I did remember to lock my screen but the hacker probably found a way around that.

Please help us set up a charity fund for people who have been hacked. It's the only recourse or Bitcoin's name will be tarnished forever in the eyes of the media, bankers, and investors. Some of us have been out hundreds of Bitcoins, or even 20,000 in one case. He felt like killing himself. Most of you don't know how it feels to be hacked, and hopefully never will.

I have the Bitcoin addresses that the hacker stole. Maybe they could be invalidated somehow, by hardcoding a blacklist into the client code? It's possibly lulzsec who hacked my computer, and they should be cut off from the funds. I know others are also maintaining a list of addresses that the hackers stole."

What is that about ?

2893  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Wallet.dat question...if anyone can help.. on: June 18, 2011, 03:01:38 AM
If I do all the steps and copy and  encrypt my wallet.dat  to trueencrypt  and have it stored away but use a local copy of the wallet.dat with a few coins to do a few spends  does the one that is stored away know I have spent the coins or added coins? how exactly would that work?
2894  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: To the person who lost the 25,000 BTC. on: June 18, 2011, 02:53:38 AM
In this thread.  http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=16457.0

Long story short. I have been doing some browsing after seeing so many gaming sites being taken down from attackers. I heard that Th3J35st3r was going after the people responsible for other reasons on MMORPG.com. Being bored I was reading the blogs through a persons site (Th3J35t3r).  Mildly curious what Bit Coin was I hit the Bit Coin link on the site. First thing i noticed was the above mentioned thread.

Reading through most of it.  I saw a name turn up linked here. http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=16457.msg222470#msg222470. @Anonakomis

That name turns up in his blogs. He even links them as LuLzsec at a point. For instance here http://th3j35t3r.wordpress.com/2011/06/16/quick-n-dirty-just-for-clarification/ I know some say it wasn't LuLzsec, personally I don't know.

http://th3j35t3r.wordpress.com/2011/06/16/quick-n-dirty-just-for-clarification/  Th3J35t3rs blog and his twitter http://twitter.com/th3j35t3r?_escaped_fragment_=/th3j35t3r#!/th3j35t3r.  Maybe try contacting him. Hope it helps.

If someone would be kind enough to pm Allinvain http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?action=profile;u=198  and/or post a link to this in his thread. Here http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=16457.0. It would be appreciated and could turn out to be help"?".

He already is aware of it as I sent him all that information already Smiley

At some point people are going to have to trust someone to help protect stuff - might be worth checking this out ...

http://www.bitprotection.info     at least you can get coverage against your wallet if anything happens... just a thought...
2897  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Noob question ... if two .dat files two different people ... on: June 17, 2011, 08:21:14 PM
Whichever transaction was processed first by the network node that finds the next block.

That is helpful thanks!
2898  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Noob question ... if two .dat files two different people ... on: June 17, 2011, 08:15:50 PM
Assuming you had the funds for both transactions, it is likely the network would authenticate both.  If you did not, the network would likely authenticate the first transaction and not confirm the second.  Lack of confirmation means that those funds would not be debited from your BTC account.

That said, do what you need to in order to secure your wallet.  Having the same wallet in two different places is generally not a good idea.

Thanks for the information.

Yes, both would transactions would have the full amount so I wonder which one overides which one ?
2899  Other / Beginners & Help / Noob question ... if two .dat files two different people ... on: June 17, 2011, 06:53:23 PM
Was wondering what happenes if I have a copy of my .dat file and someone else took a copy of my .dat file ..

and we both start spending bitcoins  can this actually happen?  Shocked
2900  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Protecting your Bitcoins? - Infostealer.Coinbit on: June 16, 2011, 10:29:08 PM
That has to be the lamest trojan I've ever seen! If it netted this guy half a million dollars, well damn.

The first very small step towards security I took was change the default place where the wallet.dat was stored...

Apparently I wouldn't have to worry anyway, as I don't use any of those operating systems!

Rezin777 it is pretty crazy when you think about it!  The location path should be the first thing you should change I totally agree.
