301  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Anonymous GPG authentication on: May 09, 2011, 01:37:47 PM
no, wouldnt work,
i shouldn't have said verify, but identify instead, my bad, sorry. Smiley

he needs to be on the network with his nick and identified to nickserv,
he can't do that, because he simply isn't on the network at all, only gribble is.

edit: assuming he's using i2p, not TOR, i'm not sure if you can login to freenode somehow through TOR, i couldn't get it to work when i tried.
If he can and does connect through TOR, all these i2p-problems don't occur
302  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: outline for a simpler virtual currency on: May 09, 2011, 01:27:44 PM
don't worry, i got that completely separate systems part,
but completely separate systems dont make things better, it makes things worse.

and you still havent mentioned how you gonna keep me from creating fake IDs, which is not a problem at all,
it's not that hard to create a few thousand fake IDs to claim the free-newbie-cash, how do you stop that?
or do you just not care?
303  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Anonymous GPG authentication on: May 09, 2011, 01:14:51 PM
that won't help much, he would need to verify his freenode-registered nick, before he can gpg-auth with gribble,
but he can not verify his freenode-registered nick, because freenode doesn't even know he's online, while he's connected through gribble,
freenode would just think he IS gribble.
and gribble has to see him on channel, too.

it could be a workaround, if gribble not only routes i2p-users, but also auth's them on i2p, instead of freenode,
but there'd still be a problem.
most, if not all trades on otc are made in private (you don't want to yell your account-numbers to everyone around),
but afaik you can't PM anyone, if you'r connected through gribble.
304  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: outline for a simpler virtual currency on: May 09, 2011, 12:54:10 PM
so, to use your transaction system, i first have to use some other completely unrelated security system, which makes it even more complicated.

however, what makes you think that your security system can't be cheated?
i can create a bunch of passport IDs without much effort, what makes you stop me?

besides that, weren't you complaining about anonymity being exception not the norm?
so you obviously want anonymity, but now you want everyones passport IDs, or some other proof-of-identity, that kinda doesn't match.
305  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: outline for a simpler virtual currency on: May 09, 2011, 09:27:53 AM
While I was initially enthusiastic that bitcoin could replace cash ..
are you serious?
think about what cash is.
cash is not even a currency, it's just one way of transfering a currency, which can be also done bitcoin-backed.
print some bitcoin-QRcodes on paper-bucks and use that as cash,
if you give those paper-bucks to me, transfer is instant and doesn't need any internet-connection, nor confirmations.

Rest assured-- the ID isn't linked to your identity.
and how do you keep any identity from linking a hundred IDs then and claim 1000 coins 100times?
if it's not linked to my identity, why not just create a few more identities? i am lots!
306  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: So, how many people are switching away from deepbit? on: May 09, 2011, 07:22:21 AM
With the current limits used by most miners (including the big pools) no more than about 10 free transactions will ever be put into a block
i'm well aware of that and i don't think that miners processing blocks without any transactions at all are any better.
it might take just a _very_ small fee, but even a _very_ small fee is a fee
and how small it is highly depends on the amount you send and the balance you might (or might not) have left after your transaction.

i just said that i hope (nah, actually i don't) that all miners using luke's pool don't send ANY free transactions themselves,
because they don't process ANY free transactions themselves, they let other miners do that un-profitable work.

so, advertising luke's pool as the one that has no fees is just wrong,
it has no fees for it's miners, but forces fees to anyone else.

i don't mind if that block-generators prefer fee-containing transactions, that's alright,
i don't mind if they don't include free transactions if the block is filled already with fee-containing transactions, that's alright,
i just can't see any reason to not include any free transactions at all.
307  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Mtgox BTC (keep it at mtgox, or store it locally?) on: May 09, 2011, 07:00:24 AM
well, it depends on how quick you wanna react on market-moves.

keep them on mtgox
pro -> you're able to sell as soon as the price moves/reaches your target
con -> you need to trust, you don't have control about the wallet, MT might run away, mtgox be hacked, hi-jacked, or whatever.

keep them local
pro -> no need to trust anyone, you have full control about the wallet (better make some backups)
con -> to sell (on mtgox) you have to wait an hour or 2 for you transaction to confirm, price might have dropped by then.

so it all depends on the timeframe between now and some later point.
308  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: adf.ly of Bitcoin on: May 09, 2011, 06:18:59 AM
well, the 'abuse' in Bit_Happy's example is,
that they do it without telling the end-user about it (where end-user is the person posting the link, not the one clicking it, if i got that right).

it's not actually an abuse of the ad-services, which provide those scripts for ethical use.

anyway,
i think it's a cool idea, even though it's not new
and services like that will pop up sooner or later anyway,
so do it!
309  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: adf.ly is so annoying! on: May 09, 2011, 06:06:37 AM

Here is my point, quite simply:
  • Some admins use it on forums and the "hi-jacked" links are added without the end-user (who posted the link) being aware his/her link is being altered.

If you do not understand the above is wrong (highly unethical), then there is nothing I can do to help you, at this time.

you're right as far as you say link hi-jacking is highly unethical,
what i don't get is, why it makes adf.ly (or similar) a bad service.

it's those forum-admins/-operators who act unethical, not the ad-services they abuse.
adf.ly, or linkbucks, to name anotherone don't hi-jack anything, they don't hide what they have to offer
and they don't force you to use them, nor to show full-page ads to clickers before showing any content, you could also decide to use framed ads, but you'll earn less (even less than you get anyway Cheesy).

310  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: So, how many people are switching away from deepbit? on: May 09, 2011, 03:12:52 AM
..the fact that I'm supporting a pool that allows low fees is nice.
it allows low fees for miners, that's true,
but the fact that it doesn't allow ANY free transactions isn't that nice.
it forces every bitcoin-user, may it be a miner or not, to pay transaction-fees.
do you ever send free transactions?
i hope you don't.
311  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Randomizer, just a stupid pyramid scheme on: May 07, 2011, 05:48:36 PM
no, you dont have to send more (if you send more, it'll show up on your balance to withdraw),
you just need to wait and be a lucky receiver of random 0.5btc,
or refer some new members to get some money back from your downline.
312  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Randomizer, just a stupid pyramid scheme on: May 07, 2011, 04:58:01 PM
Been trying to log in, but the site sees to be down.  Wil try again later.
maybe you should read the post above yours,
the site is not down, its domain changed.

turn co.cc into bitlex.org and you should be good.
313  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MtGox, back for good! on: May 07, 2011, 03:08:24 PM
sounds to me like extortion?  MagTux?
well, it sure is, but as long as MT doesnt pay what nice guy asks for, there won't be any profit,
and i doubt he ever will pay. Cheesy
314  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MtGox, back for good! on: May 07, 2011, 03:03:31 PM
Simply for profit or for another reason?
what kind of profit would you expect from such an attack? where should it come from?

still down?
not for me, try https://mtgox.com
315  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Multiminer: A more efficient way to mine on: May 07, 2011, 11:21:19 AM
i am using mutliminer-1.4 with phoenix for a few days now,
worked pretty good, actually i get less stale shares on deepbit than connecting miners seperately (0.6% with MM vs 1.2% without).

in the last 2 days though all miners stopped working with an empty-queue-msg at some point and didnt start again 'til i restart multiminer.
noticed the first stop a bit late, so the miners didn't do anything for ~7hours, second time i gladly noticed it after ~1hour.
i've no idea why it happens, but it's kinda sucky.
316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DDOS: Exchange services will be a key part of BitCoin acceptance. on: May 07, 2011, 09:57:24 AM
Once you can buy anything in BTC it will be inefficient to convert to other currencies and most of the exchanges will die off.
that'll probably take decades, if it ever happens at all.

Information service providers, programmers, and other people play key roles in todays businesses.
If they would choose not to accept other currencies, and demand for bitcoins, bitcoins would grow in value.
...

we can be happy if they choose to accept bitcoins, but why would anyone choose not to accept other currencies?
317  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Will this video card work do you think? on: May 06, 2011, 07:31:45 PM
better get some 5870/5850 if you can't get the 5970/6990,
they are not only cheaper than the GTX,
they also need less power AND are three times as fast.
318  Economy / Economics / Re: Is crytocurrency hyperinflationary? on: May 06, 2011, 03:36:58 PM

Unless you had no alternative, or ACTUALLY WANTED SOMETHING.  Gee, I'll just live in a cardboard box hoarding my bitcoins since tomorrow they might be worth more.  I guess I won't eat today anything more than cat food and out of a dumpster since I have to eat something, but the I'll save the rest for the magical day that I actually want to spend my bitcoins.

My point exactly on actually wanting something.

But let's say you have bitcoins or dollars. Bitcoins are strong and dollars are weak. Why buy your food with bitcoins? Much better to dump your dollars, until you run out.

Ok, let's say you have bitcoins OR dollars,
how would you decide to keep bitcoins and better dump dollars then?

you could also keep your dollars and better NOT get that new computer today, you will get that same computer much cheaper next year,
but that's not what you do, because you want/need that computer now and not in a year.

point is, you can only hoard money, if you don't need to spend it.

I wish someone would start a new blockchain just to test this. We'll see if anyone uses it.
there are some alternative blockchains already for different purposes,
some used as game-currencies (i heard of MartianBotCoins, whatever that is), some as domain-currencies (namecoin), some as test-currencies,
feel free to create anotherone.  Cheesy
319  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Flexible mining proxy on: May 06, 2011, 04:52:28 AM
i only get an xml-parsing error when trying to access /admin/
Code:
XML Parsing Error: XML or text declaration not at start of entity
Location: http://blah/admin/
Line Number 2, Column 1:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

guess it's just a blank line hiding somewhere, but i can't find it.
320  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Virwox now supports bitcoin on: May 05, 2011, 11:35:26 AM
'Twould be cool is VirWoX allowed conversion between any two of the supported currencies…
well, right now they treat bitcoins like real money and they don't allow conversion from USD to EUR/GBP/CHF either (and never will),
you can try to convince them that bitcoins aren't that real and actually more virtual tokens than L$,
not sure if you'd be successful though.

Isnt Viwox too expensive?
..
So I have to pay 75SLL + 3,5%
VirWox is not exactly cheap,
75SLL+3.5% is for Market Orders only, which are more expensive than trading at current bids/asks anyway,
for Limit Orders you pay 0.8 - 3.9% (*2) based on your amount of SLL commission paid in the previous 30 days.
