1. What storage methods have you used and what has worked best for you?
2. What security measures do you take to protect your private keys?
3. What advice do you have for beginners who are just starting out with Bitcoin?

1. The best storage method is hardware wallets but if you can not afford to spend budget to buy a hardware wallet, you can use free open-source non custodial wallets. I am sure they are the best if you have limited budget.

Bitcoin Core: You can run your full node but it requires big storage space. Download Bitcoin Core
Electrum: Desktop and Android. Download Electrum.
Verify your wallet file after downloading.

2. Store your private key or its another form (mnemonic seed) offline.
You can use paper piece, metal sheet, an airgap device to store it.

FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit

Activity point is maximum 14 for each 14 days from Wednesday to Wednesday forum time. If you have 1 post in each 14 days, you will get maximum 14 points for that 14 days.

If you already have 100 posts in that 14 days, you only receive 14 activity points for that 14 days. If today you delete all 100 posts in that 14 days, you will lose all 14 activity point. If you make 14 days after deletion (100 posts), you will get 0 activity point for that 14 days. Because you don't have any post in that 14 days to be counted.

However, if you delete only 99 posts in that 14 days, and remake 13 posts after deletion, your activity point will be counted to 14 points for it. You don't lose any activity after all.

308  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to qualify for and claim a FORK. on: May 13, 2023, 03:42:24 PM
The fork which was introduced to the blockchain was the cause of the congested mempool and slow transactions with high fee rate.
A fork can be made by many technical reasons, not only because of congestion on the network and high transaction fee.

Quote
I tried to use lightning network to see if the transaction and the fee will be okay but I could not use the lightning network.
Lightning Network is not a fork.

To use Lightning Network, you must open your Lightning Network channel.
Electrum Lightning Network walkthrough

Quote
So I decided to use Mempool among the three network listed in the wallet. Which are: ETA, Mempool and Static.
You don't know what are blockchain networks?

They are not three networks but are three options. You are using only one network, Bitcoin network for your transactions but you have three options to choose transaction fees with estimation from Electrum wallet.

if you want to copy and paste something, like some's statements then i prefer you to use the following syntax and put the statements and anything (text) that you want to paste.
Code:
[quote]Your text here[/quote]
and do not forget to put the source link. Because if you are copying something then you have to declare that you are quoting it and have to provide a source link too.

You can add source link and don't have to use code block. A source link is enough.

I think a quote block is better because it can help readers to know what is your own content and what you use from other sources (in quote blocks). There are some ways to use quote block.

If you don't know the source link, you can use a quote block without source link

Thank you.

Have you ever used those 2FAs that support 6-digit TOTP code?

I only see Google Authenticator as an app choice, can I use other 2FA apps?

Yes. Even though our interface only mentions Google Authenticator, the majority of 2FA applications that utilize 6-digit TOTP (time-based one-time passwords) will work in Google Authenticator's place. The application must also use an initial 16-digit key to bind accounts (which is standard for most 2FA applications).

In this case, you will still need to select 'Google Authenticator' as your chosen 2FA method when given the option.

Although we recommend Google Authenticator (if possible), here are some popular alternatives that also support 6-digit TOTP codes:

    Authy (iOS & Android)
    Okta Verify (iOS & Android)
2FA Authenticator App (2FAS) (iOS only)
    Microsoft Authenticator (iOS & Android)
    Duo (iOS & Android)
    LastPass (iOS & Android)
Most other authentication applications that support 6-digit TOTP codes

In each of these cases, the instructions in the above guide should also apply or be suitable for these apps. If you find that the instructions above do not apply, we recommend consulting your authentication app's help guide, or, confirming that the app in question supports 6-digit TOTP codes.

If you can not buy hardware wallets, can not have enough storage space for Bitcoin Core, Electrum wallet is a best option.

Many reasons everyone know but their latest wallet version gives me more reasons to use Electrum wallet.
Electrum wallet software. Why you should use it, not exchange accounts

Electrum wallet software developers just made very great upgrade to Turn off (Disable) RBF option in their wallet.

Now, with newest Electrum wallet version, RBF (Replace-by-Fee) is Enabled by default option in the wallet. You are no longer to turn it on or off like with older versions.
With this change, people will not have to use Child-Pay-For-Parents with more complexity and more expensive transaction fee. They won't have to see their transactions stuck in mempools too long while they can not do anything.

313  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Guide] How to Enable 2FA using Google Authenticator or Any Authenticator! on: May 11, 2023, 12:15:23 PM
It is at the bottom which it is mentioned and I quoted the post and added at the bottom and an explanation. I think that you missed that one. I already included that one before you made a post about Authenticator.
Better than don't have that reminder at all but I don't think it is good enough.

The reminder should be one step before a step to Copy the address to activate 2FA on the application.

Reasons are because if you don't do it before the activation step, how do you have that code for backup?

If you don't make backup first, later you will have no code to backup. If you want to backup, you have to Disable 2FA and Enable it again to get a new Address code for your new activation time.

Your topic does not have a guide for 2FA deactivation and re-enable it with new 2FA activation code.

If your device is no longer usable and you did not back up 2FA, you only can open a support ticket and wait for exchange support. They will ask you to provide documents to verify your identity that is time wasting and not comfortable.

Always backup a code you use to activate your 2FA.
You need it to recover your 2FA later or to import it on other devices.
Always backup in cryptocurrency.
314  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Use self custody wallets, don't use exchange wallets. Check mempools these days. on: May 11, 2023, 11:48:53 AM
If an exchange is going down, then always get prepared for your crypto with them are going down along with them entirely, if they got hacked, same thing, no remedy from loosing them as well
Not all will go like this. Users can get compensation from hacks, immediately or gradually. Users might not get anything.

But users must prepare for worst thing if an exchange gets hacked, stopped their service, scam exit.

You don’t have to be tech savvy to be able to move your coins off exchange
If you can move your coins from one address to another address, from you to your friend or trade partner, you can move it off exchanges. It is only you want to do it or don't want to do it.

When you move your coins off exchanges, you must store your coins in a non custodial wallet and on a clean device. You are going to fully self-custody and fully responsible for your coins. If your device is infected, your coins can be stolen.

Don't save a record of it on your email or social media accounts. That's the weakest way of keeping your private keys. And you don't have to be too techie on it because by simply writing your private keys on a plain paper, that's it.
It is for lazy people only. They are lazy and use anything they have in hands to save important information even it is related to safety of their capital.

I suggest using any other reliable network to carry out withdrawals, and today, I think, all platforms support one of the USDT pairs or any other reliable currency in which withdrawal fees are low and transactions are fast.
Reliable network can have technical problems and attacks too.

If you want to minimize risks, you can use different networks for your transactions at the same time or you can make different transactions on one network at different times or in different days. It has less risk than making one transaction, on one network. If shit happens, you can lose your money with only one transaction.
315  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Guide] How to Enable 2FA using Google Authenticator or Any Authenticator! on: May 11, 2023, 11:40:03 AM
This thread is all about how to enable 2FA and not the Authenticator itself that's why I edited the title. I understand your point but you missed the goal of this thread and how old this thread is.
Edit more please.

You only wrote about Copy and paste the Address code to activate 2FA.
You did not write about Copy and Paste the Address code to somewhere as your 2FA backup. Backup is needed for 2FA recovery later or to import it into a new device.

Forget about backup is very bad in cryptocurrency, for your wallet and for your 2FA.

Replace-by-fee is by default on Electrum version 4.1.0 or so. RBF has been default since more than two years ago since when some older versions were released. I could not remember the exact version, but I know the version was released in 2020.
See difference
You are no longer to turn it on or off like with older versions.

Options for Change address, Multiple change address, RBF, Batch RBF transactions, Spend only confirmed coins, Advance Preview were Turn off.

They are Enabled by default and the newest version does not allow you to Disable it. It gives Newbies better Default, they will not have stuck transactions in mempools and can not do anything to bump fee.

Mempools look better and now you can have your transaction at tip of mempool if you use 60 sat/vbyte rate for your transaction.

319  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why BTC Transactions Fees are Skyrocketing? on: May 09, 2023, 10:51:20 AM
BSV attacks on Bitcoin network but they will die soon. Meanwhile, Bitcoin miners will get bonuses from stupid people who pay very high transaction fee as they are temporarily receiving about 40% of their earnings from transaction fee, the remaining is from block rewards.

Without Ordinals, BRC-20 hype, they only got about 3% of earning from transaction fee.

They don't stop there but go ahead to write a long thread warning people not to invest in Bitcoin, citing this current issue of high transaction fees when compared with fiat transactions.
Let them be.

After 2 years, since 2021 they found another great chance to attack Bitcoin. They saw another great opportunity to warn people about disadvantage of Bitcoin, Bitcoin is dead.

Will they suceed? No  Grin

Quote
What could be the right and perfect counter-argument for this?
Do your plans to consolidate your inputs when fee is cheap.
Don't feed miners and give attackers chance to continue their trolling. If you join, increase free rate, that race will never stop.
You can wait for cheaper fee, if you join the fee race, you will help miners richer easily.
Currently they have very joyful time with massive transaction fee. Fee in block reward is very high at the moment and it is up to 42%, a second highest value in history.

Technical upgrades must be deployed but I am not worrying about that, solutions are always here to solve problems. Without problems, we don't need solutions.
