3041  Other / Off-topic / Post your favorite post-apocalyptic movies here on: April 09, 2020, 07:22:54 PM
Recent world events have given me some time to re-watch a few of my favorite movies, and it's cause me to reflect on what makes a move appealing to me.  It's nothing new, of course.  I'm self aware enough to know that my favorite movie genre is post-apocalyptic and it has been for quite some time.  Apparently I'm not the only one who has been inspired to watch post-apocalyptic movies as a result of recent events.  Just look at what's trending on Netflix (other than the tiger king) and you'll see that many are fascinated with this genre these days.

So, I'm wondering, what are your favorite post-apocalyptic films, movies, and TV shows?

I'll start, in no particular order other than which ones I think of first.

Blade Runner, 1982.  Duh.  Anything based on the writings of Philip K. Dick is worth watching, and this is probably the most iconic.
Blade Runner 2049, 2019.  Dare I say that this is arguably better than the original?
Book of Eli, 2010.  I can't get enough of this move, among my all time favorites.
12 Monkeys, 1995.  Very fitting for the times, since the plot is about a virus that wiped out most of the human population.
The Postman, 1997.  One of my favorites despite having the most painfully bad actor playing the lead roll.
The Omega Man, 1971.  Another one that's fitting for the time.
I am Legend, 2007.  Sort of a remake of Omega Man, in a way.  The same plot, at least.
Elysium, 2013.  More of a sci-fi action film, but the setting fits the genre.
The Walking Dead, 2010.  The first few seasons anyway.  I haven't watched since they killed off Carl.
Children of Men, 2006.  Not quite post apocalyptic, more like the characters are living through a slow rolling apocalyptic event.

I saw that tweet, and was pondering what it could be.  If I'm to venture a guess I'd say they are planning to integrating some type of exchange capability into Ledger Live.  A P2P type of exchange would be cool, but I could see them partnering with an established exchange also.  Either way, that would be a pretty cool feature.
3043  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X Experience on: April 09, 2020, 03:22:16 AM
I also have the Trezor ONE and I believe the same applies to the "ONE vs T" situation.

For the most part yes, but the T does have one distinct security advantage.  The touch screen allows you to enter your passphrase on the device, which is really only an issue if you've been infected with keyboard logging malware.

Hey!
So I've been a lurker on this forum for quite a few years now, but I still see newbie below my name Tongue
The way that the forum is structured and designed makes it rather unintuitive to seek out specific stuff, so I thought I'd make a topic about it.

1. How quickly does 'Activity' reflect on account
2. Are there any are specific parts of the forum that you don't accumulate activity from by posting?
3. Is there an upgrade option (paid in BTC) to reach higher member status?

1. Your answer and more can be found here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2766177.msg28250551#msg28250551
2. No.
3. Yes, sort of.  You can purchase a copper membership, more info here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2385104.msg24371150#msg24371150
3045  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X Experience on: April 09, 2020, 12:55:54 AM
Do you think it is worth the expense for an existing Nano S owner if you only have 1 or 2 coins (ie. not a big altcoin hodler/trader)? Is the "value add" really there for the extra expense in that situation? Huh

I like the concept of the Nano X, but I just don't think that in my situation, it warrants spending another ~US$140+ for "features" that I'm not sure are of any use  Undecided

The Nano X has a few improvements, but I wouldn't call any of them essential improvements.  As long as the S is compatible with all your coins and has enough room for all the associated apps, that's really all you'll ever need.
3046  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Legacy vs segwit on: April 08, 2020, 11:07:22 PM
Segwit addresses don't provide any more security, the purpose is to reduce fees for transactions.  The least secure address is one that is hosted by someone other than you, i.e. a custodial wallet or an exchange.  I say that because they have a greater risk of being hacked.  Of course this assumes that you are versed and capable of storing your private information in a private and secure way.
3047  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need a little advice from the best members out here on: April 08, 2020, 10:00:24 PM
I unfortunately really don't have a skill that I can work it remotely/anonymously besides writing and doing some Bitcoin-related things I've mentioned (hence I have considered so far only what I've posted in the OP).

Looks like a learning opportunity then. I think that's what I would do if I had free time - learn something new. Find something that you are interested in, something that's reasonably unique or uniquely suitable for you, and go at it.

I would avoid crowded "jobs" like campaign management or escrow. I mean how much can you really expect to make there. And if it's easy for you to do so then it's probably easy for others too, so it's a race to the bottom.

I agree with this.  The old adage "if you do what you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life," comes to mind.  Pick something that you really enjoy, and roll with it.

If you're doing something just to earn some coin, then escrow isn't the way to get there.  I am currently offering escrow services, but I'm not doing it for the money.  If you look the more established escrow providers you'll see that most are offering their service for very small percentages, and since most trades are for small amounts the income is also small.  You could try lending, but that's also a crowded field, and risky.

If income is not your primary concern, then just pick something that really interests you.  Pick a subject that interest you and write an article or a guide about it that would contribute to the forum, or newbies who are just learning about crypto.  Unlike most people, recent world events have made me busier than usual, but recently I've been trying to teach myself Python programming.  Again, I'm not doing it with income in mind, just for my own edification.

I guess most of us will leave no matter when the NFL season kicks off... no football rather sooner than later will be a nightmare though...  Wink

You must be confused.  According the Oxford dictionary, football is an American game played with an oval shaped ball.  Those Brits aught to know, they invented the language!  Grin

This issue has been covered in a few threads about Campaign Managers recently. At the end of the day it is at the CM's discression who is accepted. Issues such as causing uncertainty can be construed as being cause to be removed.

Agreed.  Please don't misunderstand me, I have no intention of putting CryptopreneurBrainboss on the spot, not my intention.  I have no objection to the manager making decisions about his campaign and who he wants to represent his client.  I am however, suggesting that all those stipulations be clearly spelled out to avoid these types of confusing situations.

This is the second time in recent months where someone was given a negative rating for campaign violations that turned out not to be violations (I realize in this particular situation the tag has been revised to neutral.)

I also feel like people are too quick to jump on a suspected alt, and then use any excuse to red-tag the accounts.  Even if the OP did indeed have two accounts registered in this specific campaign, no rule violations occurred.  Merely having an alt is no reason to get red-tagged.
3050  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🚀 Sportsbet.io - Main Club Partner of Watford FC ⚽ Fun. 🏀 Fast. 🎾 Fair. 🏆 on: April 08, 2020, 08:19:49 PM
I am so tired of watching 7 year old soccer games.  Just before all this shit went down I had ordered Fox Sports Soccer so I can keep up with the MLS and watch all the EPL matched going into the last leg of the season.  Local sports broadcasts include the big EPL games, and only the game for the local MLS team.  For me that's the San Jose Earthquakes, who suck so bad their stadium would be empty even before Covid-19.  I guess I lucked into a free month of their service, maybe more, but if there's nothing to watch, then who cares?

I hope things turn around pretty soon.  I'm not trying exaggerate the importance of sports, but they do offer a much needed distraction from the daily stresses of life.  I miss MotoGP, and Soccer.  No one is sure that the NFL season will kick off on time.  Could you imagine such horror?

3051  Economy / Reputation / Re: Appeal to review why I was given a negative trust on: April 08, 2020, 07:47:28 PM
Conclusion: Changing negative feedback to neutral thereby linking both accounts together although they both lose their slot on the previous campaign and will be willing to work with just one in my other campaigns.

Do you mind if I ask why they were kicked out of the campaign in the first place?  I am assuming it's because you suspected them of being alts of one individual, but I don't see any restrictions on enrolling multiple accounts in that campaign.  Is it the policy of the campaign to not allow alts, but lightlord forgot to mention it?  Is this policy yours alone as the manager?  Is it mentioned in another post that I failed to find?  If such a policy exists I would like to see it listed in the campaign's OP, and if doesn't, well then this whole thread is a huge nothing-burger.

3052  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X Experience on: April 08, 2020, 06:13:40 PM
I agree that's a nice piece of kit.  I'll be honest; I prefer, and more commonly use the competition's hardware wallet, but I own both the Nano S and the Nano X.  The upgrades the X offers are pretty darn handy.  Even just the simple things like being able to see the whole address on the display when confirming a spending transaction is a convenient improvement.  The bigger display is easier on my aging eyes as well.

Considering how long a hardware wallet should last an individual, I think the difference in price is negligible considering the X's improvements and added convenience.
3053  Other / Off-topic / Re: [CyberSecurity] Have you ever been pwned? Protect yourself from cyberattacks. on: April 08, 2020, 06:05:02 PM
In this day and age one would think this stuff should be common knowledge by now, but it's not.  I was having a discussion with my college student daughter about cyber security the other day, and she said something that made by blood curl.  She said "I just search for what I want, and pick the top Google result because I know it's safe."   Shocked Shocked

I just about shit a brick wall when she said that.  All this time I thought I was a good father, preparing my children for the worst that the world could throw at them.  I guess I failed in the internet security department.  The other thing she said that made my ears blow steam; "I don't have to worry about viruses because I use a mac."  At this point my anus is manufacturing bricks at a rate that would make Donald Trump proud.

I grew up with computers from before the internet was a household word.  All this stuff seems like second nature to me, and maybe that's why I take it for granted that people should know this stuff.

I also searched for other website that helps check if emails have been leaked and here they are
- https://breachalarm.com/

I wouldn't be so trusting with these sites.  Wouldn't it be the perfect ploy to dupe people into giving them their email addresses under the guise of checking if they've been leaked, only to then sell them to spammers and scammers?

3057  Economy / Reputation / Re: Suchmoon - claims you should ban members for presenting evidence of scamming? Tr on: April 07, 2020, 07:06:30 PM
I just posted the link. There you are.

That thread contains nothing other than the ramblings of a raving lunatic who can't distinguish between reality and his own fiction.  Stop spamming your bullshit all over the forum.  Stop pretending your goal to fix DT1, nobody is fooled by it.  Stop pretending you care about this forum.  All you're really here to do is attack and undermine those who've grown tired of your schizophrenia.  Your latest strategy of using your alts to manipulate the trust system will be your downfall.  Good bye.

Will I ever get to retire this picture?

Highly unlikely.  Covid-19 means tons of trolls are working from home, or not working at all.  I have a feeling this meme will get a lot of mileage in the weeks to come.
3058  Economy / Reputation / Re: Suchmoon - claims you should ban members for presenting evidence of scamming? Tr on: April 07, 2020, 06:44:08 PM
Suchmoon claims you should ban members who present clear evidence of willing scam facilitating for pay by her friends ( trolling)?

That's a flat out lie, and you know it, cryptohunter.  You are a cunt of the highest order, you know that?  There was a time when I thought you might actually get over yourself, but no.  You're a narcissistic sociopath who can't distinguish between reality and your own delusions.  You do deserve a ban, and it's because you are manipulating the trust system with all your alts, you turd.

It is not helpful to use this kind of language. You appear to be falling into his trap.
He can not forgive peoples mistakes from many years ago. He is a chauvanistic male.
Better to ignore such a person.
Nutildah may have forgotten this happened if bjr did not keep bringing it up. People can deserve a second chance.

Nice try, playing diplomatic and all, but you aren't fooling anyone.  Just another account you're using to try to manipulate the trust system.  All you need are ten merit points, then build your trust list, then it's on the next account, right?  You do deserve a ban, and it can't come soon enough.

If you notice this person is in the thread linked in the OP. He is another defender and protector of scammers

If you're going to make those kinds of allegations against me...

I would like to see the irrefutable and conclusive proof...

3060  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: If I use the real GPG verified electrum, am I vulnerable to fake updates? on: April 07, 2020, 05:00:24 PM
by comparing file hashes contained in GPG signed keys,
you are not comparing file hashes here, instead you are verifying that the digital signature is made from the key that you choose to trust.

Curious that the OP suggested that.  I've downloaded software that doesn't provide a signature file for the binaries, but instead includes a PGP signed list of checksum hashes.  I can't remember if it's TOR browser of Oracle VM that does that, but it seems like a viable way of doing it, even if it requires an second step and knowledge of both PGP, and how to check for hash values.

It's something I've thought about in the past, why doesn't Electrum publish their checksum hashes?  A lot of us old-timers have been verifying the checksum of downloaded software for some time now.

Quote
The default setup of electrum selects a server automatically. How does it know which server to sync with, and that it's not malicious?
Electrum "servers" or with their correct descriptive name: "bitcoin core full nodes with additional indexing" can not be malicious! even those exploiting the vulnerability in pre 3.3.4 version weren't exactly malicious since they are not doing anything apart from replying to you with block headers, transaction,... it was user's mistake that they downloaded a malicious file from a website without verifying its signature.

Has the source of fraudulent message been found?  How were so many servers infected?
