Last week when it dipped down to about $55k my son asked me if he should buy, here was my answer:

If you want to make a quick buck, no.
If you want to hold bitcoin for the long haul and use it as a currency, then there is no wrong time to buy.  But then, you always BTFD!
2203  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [Questions] Running my own electrum server on: April 24, 2021, 12:21:10 PM
Since it creates its own index, is there a reason why I should “carry” the entire blockchain?
It builds the index from the bitcoind blockchain, hence why you need it.

I don't think you can use systemd with WSL... you can however use it with WSL2: https://gist.github.com/djfdyuruiry/6720faa3f9fc59bfdf6284ee1f41f950

note that systemd is not entirely necessary to use ElectrumX... it's just a method for setting it up as a background service and autostart etc. You should be able to just "run" ElectrumX assuming you have the config etc setup correctly.

You can't use systemd on wsl, it's not given access to base hardware functions like that.  I love using WSL, it's definitely the most convenient way I've found to SSH into another machine, VPS, and I even use it access my VirtualBox instances on the same host.

@BlackHatCoiner, you can install Ubuntu server onto VirtualBox, start the instance in "headless" mode, and access it with WSL.  The advantage is that you can copy and paste commands right from your windows desktop without installing all the VirtualBox additions.  I'll be a relatively light install without any bloat, and should work for your needs.

Also note worthy; ElectrumX requires bitcoin core to run unpruned, so you will have to download the entire blockchain.

In case anyone cares, here's how to set up a VirtualBox so you can ssh into it using WSL:

Obviously your VM needs to have SSH server installed, but you don't need to generate a key pair.

On your VM:
Code:
sudo apt install openssh-server

On your host, go to your vbox settings, click on network, on the "Adapter 1" tab click on Advanced to expand the field, and then click on the "Port Forwarding" button:

Create a rule as shown below.  The host port isn't critical but choose something you're certain isn't being used by another service.

Now you'll be able to start your vbox in headless mode, open a WSL window, and connect using this command:
Code:
ssh -p 2200 <vboxusername>@localhost

I just received a PM from theymos informing me that selling AWS accounts is now banned:
I suddenly realized, the trading of those accounts has been banned for a long time.

AWS was added to the list recently, probably today (see last edit date). Here's the archive:

https://ninjastic.space/topic/5173486

Correct.  During discussion about this with theymos he sent me a PM yesterday saying he was thinking about banning the sales of AWS accounts [paraphrasing] and this morning he informed he added it to the list.  He included a link to to the edited thread/post.  I'm sure he wouldn't mind if I just posted his PM here, but whatever, you get the picture.

Saves some time for the OP, and banning is more effective than red trust.

Yes indeed, thank you theymos.  As a result I've removed my support the flags I created yesterday and removed all the feedback I left as well.  The new rule makes them obsolete, and fuel for drama.  No thank you.

I believe this thread has also become obsolete, so I'll lock it.  If anyone has a compelling reason for it to remain open, please PM me.
2205  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Kialara 2015 #177/250 Unfunded on: April 23, 2021, 06:54:42 PM
It'll be a lot easier to sell your item if you post some photos.  Preferably photos with proof of ownership.  Bellow is a quote from the topic pinned at the top of this board.  You should also mention if you're willing to work with escrow.

Good luck with your sale.

2. Post a picture of the item you want to sell, along with your username and date/Block height next to the item. This helps to verify you actually have the item you want to sell. If you are new to the forum, post the picture at imgur.com and provide a link or use BBCode to post.  Don't worry if your picture does not show up in the post. Someone with a rank higher than 'newbie' will likely add it to the thread in the following posts for you.
2206  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Fees for Buying Bitcoin on CoinBase on: April 23, 2021, 06:22:55 PM
Do both 1 and 2 from above apply if i buy from my checking account that is linked to Coinbase?

Yes.  If you buy directly from the main coinbase app or site you'll pay at least 2% in exchange fees, more if you're buying smaller amounts.  If you use Coinbase Pro the fee structure is different, you'll pay a maximum of 0.5%.

Buy/Sell Transactions

Coinbase charges a spread of about one-half of one percent (0.50%) for cryptocurrency purchases and cryptocurrency sales. However, the actual spread may be higher or lower due to market fluctuations in the price of cryptocurrency on Coinbase Pro between the time we quote a price and the time when the order executes.

We also charge a Coinbase Fee (in addition to the spread), which is the greater of (a) a flat fee or (b) a variable percentage fee determined by region, product feature, and payment type. The flat fees are set forth below:

If the total transaction amount is less than or equal to $10, the fee is $0.99 | €0,99 | £0,99 | C$0.99^ | S$0.99 | CLP $0.99 | Mex$0.99
If the total transaction amount is more than $10 but less than or equal to $25, the fee is $1.49 | €1,49 | £1,49 | C$1.49^ | S$1.49 | CLP $1.49 | Mex$1.49
If the total transaction amount is more than $25 but less than or equal to $50, the fee is $1.99 | €1,99 | £1,99 | C$1.99^ | S$1.99 | CLP $1.99 | Mex$1.99
If the total transaction amount is more than $50 but less than or equal to $200, the fee is $2.99 | €2,99 | £2,99 | C$2.99^ | S$2.99 | CLP $2.99 | Mex$2.99
^Does not apply to sells to PayPal - please see variable fee table below.

For example, if you are in the United States and wish to purchase $100 of bitcoin and pay with a US bank account or your USD Wallet, the flat fee would be calculated as $2.99. As noted below in the variable fee section, the variable percentage fee would be 1.49% of the total transaction, or $1.49. Since the flat fee is greater than 1.49% of the total transaction, your fee would be $2.99. If you wanted to purchase bitcoin with a debit card, we would charge a fee of 3.99% since the variable percentage fee is higher than the flat fee.

Variable percentage fee structure by location and payment method are shown in the last section below. These fees do not apply to cryptocurrency conversions. As a reminder, the Coinbase Fee will always be the greater of the minimum flat fees described above or the variable fees described below.

I just received a PM from theymos informing me that selling AWS accounts is now banned:

Trading the accounts of these services is not allowed. Report anyone selling them. Newbies will be permanently banned; established members may be given warnings before being banned, but the relevant posts will be deleted.

  • AWS
  • N26
  • Upwork

Services are added to this list when we come to believe that essentially no trades of such accounts are following our rules, which prohibit for example selling hacked accounts, accounts requiring KYC info, accounts created using stolen identities, etc. If you have a really strong argument for how you're selling these accounts without violating our rules, create a topic in Meta explaining in detail, and we may consider either removing the service from this list or giving you a one-time exemption.

This list only applies to sales of accounts, not invites, codes, etc., though sales of the latter items must still follow our usual rules.

1. Are you sure you downloaded Electrum from the right source; electrum.org?  There are many malicious version intent on stealing your money.
2. Did you verify the download using ThomasV's PGP key?
3. Did you create an extension for your seed phrase (a 13th word?)

If you can answer those three questions we'll have an easier time helping you.

2211  Other / Archival / Re: Amazon AWS & SES Account Sellers Tag & Flag Reference Thread on: April 22, 2021, 09:40:32 PM
Does this apply only for AWS account sellers?

For the time being, yes.

What about other cloud account sellers?

I've thought about this, and the main reason I'll focus on AWS is because it's by far the more popular one.  So far what I've seen is that if a seller is advertising MS Azure or Google Cloud, he's also advertising AWS.  Chances are those other types of accounts are also fraudulently obtained, so they also qualify.

What about people who sell online banking accounts with other people docs?
What about people who sell gamling accounts with other people docs?

Those are obviously hacked accounts, which are already forbidden by forum rules.
2212  Other / Archival / Re: Amazon AWS & SES Account Sellers Tag & Flag Reference Thread on: April 22, 2021, 07:00:02 PM
Are you busting AWS credit/code sellers too? I don't know about the legitimacy of those, always seemed sketchy. Are they generating the codes somehow?

I'm open to adding those sellers.  I've been busy looking for the actual account sellers, but I welcome suggestions and would appreciate the help.

Anyway, account sellers are probably breaking forum rules. No hacked or otherwise illegitimately obtained KYC accounts should be allowed to be sold here. I don't see how you can legitimately obtain an AWS account for sale. At the very least you'd have to supply fake credentials.

That was what convinced theymos.  It seems pretty obvious, and any rational person would come to the same conclusion.

Warning:
Do Not Buy Accounts Without Using Escrow!

Amazon AWS and SES account sellers should not to be trusted!
Some may have actual accounts for sale, while many are opportunistic scammers that will take your money given the opportunity.
Also note that most, if not all the accounts sold on this forum are hacked or created using falsified documents.
It shouldn't be a surprise that participants of this unscrupulous activity would take advantage of you if given the chance.
Don't let yourself be fooled by the promise of saving a little money.
If you insist on engaging in this activity, use a trusted third-party escrow.

Edit:

I've just been informed by theymos that AWS account sales have been added to the list of Banned Services:

This thread is intended as a reference for the tags and flags I plan to apply to ALL AWS account sellers.

As many of you know, there's a constant stream of scam accusations about those who sell AWS accounts.  It could be just one or a small group of scammers constantly creating new accounts to shed the red-tagged previous account.  I'm sick of it, and I'm resorting to extreme measures.  No more Mr. Nice Guy!

This isn't the first time I've gotten fed up with all the AWS account scammers here on the forum, nor is it the first time I've tried to do something about it.  At some point last year I got just as frustrated with these reports, and decided I would offer free escrow service to help prevent scams.  Well, that worked out for a short time, and I'd like to believe that I helped some people trade safely.  Obviously the scammers weren't happy about that, so at least one (possibly more) started harassing me with numerous alt accounts, here and on Telegram, effectively wasting more of my time than I could afford.  It worked, and eventually I was forced to abandon the project.  Admittedly this coincided with me becoming very busy at work, which only made the frustration of caving-in feel even worse.  Sadly, I had to admit that the fucking scammers won that round.

To those of you who see this as over-the-top, possibly even an abuse of the trust and flag system, I suggest the following:
Code:
~DireWolfM14

To the rest of you, I hope you'll join me.

I've reached out to theymos about this use of the trust and flag system to get this thoughts.  Although I get the sense he sees this as an extreme measure, he indicated the use of the trust and flag system in this way is justifiable.  I won't attempt to put words in his mouth, I'm sure he'll share his feelings here if he wishes.
2215  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Virginia Police Officer Fired After Making A Donation on: April 22, 2021, 06:04:00 AM
vigilante killer

I'm going to take issue with this statement.  I'm not defending Rittenhouse only because I don't know what he did (or didn't do) to instigate what we saw on video.  There could have been something not on film that would make him culpable for what happened, and I don't if that is or is not the case, so will not pass judgement, and I ask that others also refrain from doing so.

I will say, however that what I saw on video looks like self-defense.  Every one that was shot by Rittenhouse that night was shown on video chasing him at some point, one person armed with a pistol, another who took a swing at his head with a skateboard.

As for this cop (and some paramedic in Utah) donating to Rittenhouse's defense fund?  I've seen lots discussion about this topic on the firearms forums, and many comments encourage donating to the defense of the kid simply to show support for the 2nd amendment.  I would venture to guess that these folks are donating to support his legal efforts from a Pro2A and pro self defense stance.  Not so much because they believe Rittenhouse did nothing wrong.  I don't think they should be losing their jobs, or being harassed by the media for taking a political stand.  That's not about trust, that's about "mob justice."  Obey, or else!

Like many other cases, I find this one disturbing because people are so ready to jump to one conclusion or the other without waiting to learn all the facts.  The most damaging part is that the conclusions people jump to are often aligned with hotly contested political point's of view.  Usually this makes any productive discourse on the subject even more difficult.

I'll admit, I'm not completely innocent.  When I look at Rittenhouse I see a snot-nosed punk with a mall-ninja complex who saw an opportunity to brandish his lethal "toy" and got way more than he bargained for, while others died.  Let's just say if he was my kid he would have known better.  But I'll try to keep perspective of my judgements; they are solely a result of my convictions, my presumptions, and my biases.
2216  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Is it Possible to Guess a Private key of Bitcoin Paper Wallet? on: April 22, 2021, 05:26:28 AM
So, can you please suggest a safe and secure site that is 100% trusted?

You can safely generate a "paper wallet" by finding a site that allows you to download the source and run it on an off-line.  There are a couple out there, but I won't link to any because I don't recommend that method.

You can also use a light-client desktop wallet to do the same thing, but better.  I recommend Electrum, which will allow you to create a wallet with many addresses that backed up by a 12-word long seed phrase.  You can create a wallet on an on-line computer to use as a "hot wallet" or you can create a "cold wallet" on a off-line computer and have a "watch only" version to access on your on-line computer.

2217  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoind systemd service unit file on: April 21, 2021, 09:32:47 PM
Here's a link to the standard bitcoind.system file included with the source code:
https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/contrib/init/bitcoind.service

If you want to use it as-is you'll have to create a system user named "bitcoin."  Also note the directories and their permissions:

Code:
# Directory creation and permissions
####################################

# Run as bitcoin:bitcoin
User=bitcoin
Group=bitcoin

# /run/bitcoind
RuntimeDirectory=bitcoind
RuntimeDirectoryMode=0710

# /etc/bitcoin
ConfigurationDirectory=bitcoin
ConfigurationDirectoryMode=0710

# /var/lib/bitcoind
StateDirectory=bitcoind
StateDirectoryMode=0710

To install bitcoin core to the specified directory use this code:
Code:
sudo install -m 0755 -o root -g root -t /usr/bin bitcoin-0.21.0/bin/*

You'll have to create two directories (/etc/bitcoin and /var/lib/bitcoind) and set the ownership/group to bitcoin:bitcoin and permissions to -rwx--x--- (chmod 710.)  Bitcoin core will create the runtime directory as needed.

You can now copy your bitcoin.conf file to /etc/bitcoin and set ownership/permission the same as the directory.  You should be able to use systemctl to enable and start bitcoind now, but of course it'll start downloading the blockchain from the start.  If you change your simlink and use the same directory on the USB drive, you'll need to start bitcoind manually the first time with -reindex.

I find this is the most reliable way to run bitcoind with systemd.

Consider yourself one of the lucky ones.  I think they released Elon Musk's funds pretty darn quick when he tweeted about them, you're in pretty darn good company.

I'd like to think that posting on bitcointalk.org got you the result you were looking for, but that would be presumptive of me.  I'm glad it worked out.

It's like every time you wanted to reach into your physical wallet to buy a soda or something, you had to send your personal documents to a bunch of strangers.

I really wonder what's going on with this outfit.  If they were a legitimate exchange they would be making a mint the honest way.  Is it a ponzi?  Have they squandered so much of their clients' funds that they have to scramble to compensate those who squawk the loudest?

Given the plethora of KYC dox they request it can't possibly take weeks (or months in some cases,) to confirm someone's identity.  Not to mention the deception of pretending they don't require KYC until they decide your account balance is "suspicious."
2219  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Alternative to Coinbase? on: April 20, 2021, 10:03:38 PM
Depending on where he lives, he might be able to hook up with someone who wants to buy his bitcoin in person.  I've never done that myself, but it seems like a neat way to do your business and socialize with another bitcoin enthusiast in the process.

It might also be a good way to find yourself becoming a victim of a $5 wrench attack.  If it was just for a few hundred bucks, then okay that may be a cool way to trade bitcoin, but I wouldn't take this risk for anything over a couple grand.  YMMV.

I guess I'm kinda skeptical about informing complete strangest that I own bitcoin.  Other than my immediate family and few very close friends, the only people who know I'm into bitcoin are you lot.
