3501  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-12-07 LA TIMES: Don't you feel silly now? on: December 08, 2013, 05:20:16 AM
The article is not so bad. I mean clearly the writer doesn't believe in bitcoin but it's an article focuses on volatility and volatility is a fact in bitcoin.
Apart from the title everything else is fine with me.

anybody who gets into bitcoin thinking that there won't be volatility is just a fool. im pretty sure most people who bought in felt this way at least.

i just think the writer is doing this premature "i told you so" .. well, my response is "no shit, bitcoin is a volatile currency/asset."

Actually he is just stressing out volatility and he even says that the price might return soon to pre  crash levels. Pretty descent article from someone that obviously thinks of bitcoin as something that it's not going to happen.

i know. that's what i originally said.. he's saying "it's volatile, told you say." but i thought we already knew that bitcoins could swing violently in either direction.
3502  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How long would it take for Anarchy to start working? on: December 08, 2013, 04:48:53 AM
are you talking about the movement that lasted for 3 years? the movement that ultimately gave way to francisco franco? i'm not really well-versed with the history of anarchy in societies, but it seems like they usually don't last very long.

Yes, the forces of Francisco Franco eventually won the Spanish civil war, leading to the dictatorship. But my point is, it didn't fail because of a lack of internal organization. It, as well as other similar movements throughout Europe (in Greece, Italy, etc.) in the period immediately after the Second World War, failed due to external attacks. In Spain mainly because of the Fascists and Communists, in other parts of Europe they were "liberated" (read "slaughtered") by the Allied forces.

i guess you agree with me then, because i think if 1 country were to go anarchistic (and they are surrounded by state-run governments), an external force (neighboring country) would come in and invade them.. which has happened in the past. i don't think just arming every man and woman with a gun is going to get the job done.
3503  Economy / Speculation / Re: [BEARS ONLY] Predict the next big crash <600 on: December 08, 2013, 04:46:09 AM
Not a Bear or Bull, but I still find it surprising BTC has retained its current value during this cycle.

I 'll share the same surprise if the price stabilizes or even better if the downtrend gets reversed. For now i 'm still kinda scared.  Lips sealed

we're all scared.. but fuck it, i'm all in. i don't think i'm going to pretend like i know what's going to happen anymore.. maybe it'll go below $500, or maybe it won't. there's no way i can know who the manipulators are and aren't, and what they are planning.
3504  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin will either die or stabilize around 200-500 dollars on: December 08, 2013, 04:40:25 AM
In the long run, as long as major network problems don't ruin it,  bitcoin should continue to rise because it's supply is defined and actually decreasing.  This is because it's the first of its kind and the crypocurrency that people have heard of.  Alt coins have really never been in the news.   If only I bought when I saw it at $500 last night.

the supply is not decreasing.. it's still increasing. if anything, the demand is outpacing the mined bitcoins though.
3505  Other / Politics & Society / Re: How long would it take for Anarchy to start working? on: December 08, 2013, 04:35:14 AM
and how long did they last? just a blip on the map. i don't know what the solution, but if you have an anarchistic society, you're probably not going to be as well-organized as government run states.. which means they will come for your ass and use you and your resources up.

Oh, they were pretty well organized alright. In fact, in many ways much better than the government they had. Take a look at the 6 part BBC documentary "The Spanish Civil War". You have to understand, this wasn't chaos and "survival of the fittest" we're talking about, it really was a well organized society... it just so happened that it had no central government, and still worked.

3506  Economy / Economics / Re: How to MASTER bitcoin trading on: December 08, 2013, 04:33:06 AM
Take the bitcoin you have and move it to an exchange like btc-e. Put in a sell order that will give you a somewhat decent profit after fees are taken into account, and wait. No telling when, but your order will be filled.

Shiiiiiit, I wouldn't dare to leave my coins at BTC-e or any exchange for a long amount of time. They like it in my paper wallets.

That is my biggest concern with trading as well.

same. but if you're not willing to take the risks, someone else will.. and they'll end up making big bucks.

i think OP's point is to not be too greedy. you can make money if you put buy orders at a profit.

Anarchy would never ever ever work.  Human nature is not anarchical but hierarchical.

Hmm, haven't relatively large anarchic communities already existed? For example, those in the regions of Catalonia and Aragon in Spain, 1936.

and how long did they last? just a blip on the map. i don't know what the solution, but if you have an anarchistic society, you're probably not going to be as well-organized as government run states.. which means they will come for your ass and use you and your resources up. it's just an extremist, one-size-fits-all ideology that is just wishful thinking to me.,
3509  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need major help - PLEASE 1600 BTC on: December 08, 2013, 04:20:24 AM
1.  Talk with a CPA or the equivalent, and get a professional opinion about the tax situation coming up next year.  Don't do something because of rumor or a mistake.
2.  Read about the Winklevoss SEC filing.  In particular, see if it is possible to put a lot of the bitcoins into a fund that in turn can be put into a tax sheltered retirement account.
3.  Do something good and important with some of the coins.  This depends on your own personal interests.  Perhaps help a college, or a charitable foundation that works for some cause that you think is important.  My own cause is related to domestic violence / violence against women because my daughter was murdered by her boyfriend.
4.  Again, talk to the CPA and find a way to withdraw the money over a period of years with careful attention to the tax situation, but enough money to pay your minimum food and shelter, but no frills.  Get a job for the frills, let the bitcoin keep growing.
5.  Don't try to do currency exchange.  If you ignore this, get a practice account and after you lose all that money then do not try to do currency exchange.
6.  Invest in something that will help the bitcoin community.  Pay to develop software that does something important, or help start a bitcoin economy in a small town.  For example, I live in an isolated town of about 5,000 people with about 1,800 students in it.  A donation of a few hundred bitcoin spread among several merchants and all the students could dramatically increase the future value of bitcoin.  Find a similar situation and support it.

sorry to hear about your daughter.. that's pretty messed up. anyways, that's solid advice.. i'd consider all of them.
3510  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Watch the tracking of the sheep marketplace thief in real time on: December 08, 2013, 04:19:07 AM
This kind of vigilante justice can have very bad consequences if they accuse the wrong person. Wrongful accusations can ruin peoples lives, and in this case possibly get somebody killed or tortured. If they get the wrong person I hope they're prepared for big lawsuits.

It was almost established beyond doubt that the Czech guy Tomas was the one who stole USD 100 million worth of BTCs. The evidence was so overwhelming. I think the online tracking process is over and the drug vendors are planning their physical actions.

yeah they are probably hunting him down IRL as we speak.. the spoils are not worth it if you have to sleep with one eye open.
3511  Economy / Speculation / Re: so glad i bought at 1000 on: December 08, 2013, 04:14:37 AM
i sold .5 btc at $240 and rebought at $800.. which means i made $120, and then turned around and bought the same amount i sold for $400.. so i ended up losing $280. i was the fool, but i'm' glad i didn't bet big when i sold at $240.

the point is that a lot of people made mistakes, but there's not point in beating yourself up over it. i know it's hard to know what to do, especially at this point in time  Cheesy
3512  Other / Off-topic / Re: Traveling across America on: December 08, 2013, 04:12:31 AM
cool. i'm quitting my job at the end of this month, and i'm heading out a bit myself.. but it's more for meditation. keeping up with the status quo won't work for me either. i rahter find what i enjoy doing, and do it.. instead of being a zombie at a job that i despise.
Glad to hear you're leaving the system! A big part of my traveling will be getting in touch with my spiritual side. I just can't find the peace/time to do that in the city. Good luck to you Smiley

You are traveling across American by foot? I would rather do it by motorcycle.
In any case, allow me to suggest that you look at this site https://www.couchsurfing.org/

It might be of use to you.
Well, gas can be expensive over long periods of time. Plus I feel like taking my time. But thanks for the link! Will definitely have to check that out.

Too bad BTC wasn't as adopted yet, because it would be cool to see if someone could actually travel and live off of BTCs.
Funny you should mention that; with the cloud mining I have, I can just have all the bitcoins sent to my tablet. And I make a decent amount per day; enough to feed a family of three. So my plan for the most part is to basically live off of bitcoins, by selling them on gyft.com for restaurant and store gift cards.

yeh, thanks.. wish i had gotten into bitcoin earlier. i'd have a bigger pot to fall back. as of now, i don't have enough to last me very long, so it kind of makes me nervous a bit.
3513  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 08, 2013, 04:04:46 AM
has this recent crash deterred any of the major retailers from accepting BTC? i know there isn't a whole lot of risk if they are using bitpay, but it's still negative news that could push them away.
3514  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need major help - PLEASE 1600 BTC on: December 08, 2013, 04:03:40 AM
man, i only want 1/3rd of 1600 BTC. like everyone says, try localbitcoins and gradually withdraw. with 1600 BTC, you may be set for life.. as long as you use your finances wisely.
3515  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Request: Satoshi, please send me a message via Bitcoin! on: December 08, 2013, 03:53:50 AM
Maybe the person overdosed on the drugs they bought from DPR. It was a very large quantity!

Then again it's very likely it is DPR due to the fact development stopped as soon as the silk road market opened. In fact it is probably more realistic that the bitcoins were seed capital for the drug market, not for purchasing drugs.

yeah right, DPR was a fool who didn't know when to shut his mouth. if anything, satoshi is the exact opposite of that. i think there's a good chance they know each other though.
3516  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-12-07 LA TIMES: Don't you feel silly now? on: December 08, 2013, 03:46:55 AM
doesn't the LA times feel silly? no one reads their newspapers anymore.
3517  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Request: Satoshi, please send me a message via Bitcoin! on: December 08, 2013, 03:45:46 AM
satoshi would be a rockstar if he came out of the public. he'd be able to go to a club, point at some broads, and take them home for a night of good loving. doubt he's going to go out of hiding for some random newbie on the forum.
3518  Economy / Speculation / Re: It's over. Bitcoin is finished. on: December 08, 2013, 03:42:19 AM
hey OP, do you think that i could possibly reserve a spot in one of your run-for-the-hills bunkers?
3519  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Any other Americans considering a claim against the FBI over SilkRoad? on: December 08, 2013, 03:36:31 AM
I don't do illegal drugs.
I visited silk road(out of curiosity, not intent to purchase/consume).

I don't know much about SR (was never a member). But even at its peak, less than 50% of the merchandise items were drugs, weapons and other illegal stuff. The rest consisted of Bullion, BTC to Cash offers, Bitcoin miners.etc

either way, the point is that it was an underground black market.. for illegal activity. he might as well go to the police station with a line of coke still on his nose.
3520  Economy / Economics / Re: mBTC for more stability on: December 08, 2013, 03:34:00 AM
I think the switch to mBTC contributed to the BTC price crash.

I think the switch is confusing, unnecessary, and stupid. Most people aren't good at maths. They've heard of bitcoin, heard the price is going up and up, and then go to a site displaying the (m)btc price and see "$0.80 per mBTC'.

Any switch to mBTC should have been (a) agreed by the community and (b) implemented with an education program.

This adhoc approach  where some sites switch and others don't just leads to confusion.

Whether it contributed to the crash in the last 24 hrs or it was pure coincidence, who knows. What I do know is I don't believe in coincidence  Wink

I also know that the bitcoin price was still doing great at "over $1000 a coin", people were still buying ........ mBTC is a damaging solution. to a non-existent problem.

when bitcoin is $10,000/per, and someone tries to divide up $10 worth of bitcoins.. they are gonna have trouble. like you said, they are not good at maths. and i strongly doubt it contributed to the crash. that being said, i don't really care if we use mBTC or BTC or not.
