You mean they get to tax you when Bitcoin rises (even though you haven't cashed out), yet they don't credit you when it loses value??
Correct.

Quote
That is beyond self-serving and unethical.
Yep. Hence the lost lawsuit about human rights violations. But that was about the high tax on savings accounts, they're still fighting over the investment part. And I'm not even mentioning the "hidden tax" disguised as BRRR.

The IRS needs some serious reform
To be fair: this isn't the (US) IRS.
3603  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Ads for online gambling should be banned. on: August 16, 2023, 03:04:42 PM
Australia isn't the first: starting last month, the Netherlands banned most online gambling ads. It's only allowed if the company can prove at least 95% of the target audience is 24 years or older.
The law doesn't mention if this only applies for advertising targeting the Netherlands, or all online advertising. Either way, just to be sure, I won't advertise gambling in my signature unless things are more clear. I guess they never considered the possibility of a Dutch person advertising online for an international audience.
3604  Other / Off-topic / Re: IRS Now Gets to Tax Unrealized Cryptocurrency Gains on: August 16, 2023, 01:40:04 PM
Yes. Everything does. The IRS is merely clarifying that the same rules that apply to everything else also apply to crypto, because apparently some people seem to think that the normal rules of finance don't apply to their Magic Internet Money.
That's what I thought. Seems fair.

You know what isn't fair? Here, we're taxed close to 2% in "annual wealth tax" (although they don't call it that way) on Bitcoin, even though Bitcoin dropped a lot last year. Other investments dropped too, and they're still fighting over it in court. I wish we'd only be taxed on capital gains.

has anyone tried to deposit some sats recently to check if the 2 of 3 address receives the fund?
Depositing just to check that would be a dumb thing to do now.

Quote
Second thing: I fail to understand where is the decentralized nature of the website. The funds are in hold by one person or at least he is pretending to be three person containing three keys.
The website is completely centralized. The future plans to decentralize the site have been discussed, but that doesn't mean anything yet. Note that one of the questions I asked last May about this was ignored.

Quote
My suggestion: Everyone who have fund there in the notes, submit withdrawal [full amount], leave nothing. You will get the Letter of Guarantee. Verify the message. The letter will have withdrawal address and anyone can easily verify that the funds were not received. Do not use this address in the future just in case someone get a chance to tell that you received the funds.
Good point! Then, use the LoG as evidence to Support a Type 3 Flag.

if the site stops working and the developer team is no longer answer, I don't know how to compensate the users.
Bitcoin doesn't have a history of "compensating users". Not your keys, not your coins. It's a risk they all knew.

The onion URL is now down since a few hours.
The .onion loads here.

The file name should not have the ".". I am of the opinion that using dots in filenames is not the best option. It can generate conflicts in file extensions/types.
Has that actually caused problems, or is it only theoretical?
As far as I know, most of the confusion comes from the fact that a certain Operating System hides file extensions by default. It even lead scammers to the creation of files ending on .txt.exe, just so the user wouldn't notice it isn't a text file.

The Linux way to determine the file type is by checking the file instead of it's extension. The extension doesn't matter.

Quote
I would suggest changing it to something without the ".", like "meritall". Or something like "merit_all".
I have many links to this file, and I'm pretty sure some people use it for automated downloads by now. So I don't really want to change the name (and I'm not in favour of hard linking to create duplicate files.
If anyone wants, I could create a compressed version though. But it's probably going to end on .all.txt.gz Tongue

3607  Other / Meta / Re: Igebotz Nigerian Local Board Merit Source Application on: August 16, 2023, 12:52:00 PM
Fair enough, but Google Translate hasn't found a way to translate Nigerian Pidgin to English yet, and most of these posts are always in Pidgin, so many merit sources will skip them except those who want to merit blindly or based on the reputation of the user who submitted those links.
Wait, I'm confused Tongue We here always use the phrase "pidgin English" for bad English, or the Dutch equivalent: Steenkolenengels. I've been wondering why Nigeria needed their own local board, given that English is the official language. I'm now starting to think you guys actually call it "Pidgin" which just sounds funny Smiley
When I saw posts on the Nigerian local board before, I thought it was just English but with lots of mistakes. Now I'm starting to think this is how it's supposed to be:
This one go different and na based on the different coins dem wey you dey interested in wey go determine if you go go long term or short term.
When I read this, what I see is: "English English English mistake English English English dem wey English dey English English wey English English English English English English" Cheesy

Handling a source to a local who understands these languages solves these issues
No argument there Smiley

Basically, main people lost access due to travels while people still with access didn't have the right credentials to solve basic issues that caused withdraws to get stuck on the back-end. I've been assured that nothing has been lost and that all will be taken care of tomorrow meaning all currently pending withdraws will be processed and things return back to normal. It was an unfortunate situation is all!
It sounds like they are running a hobby instead of a business. Really I will have a business where I am going to allow incoming btc but making excuse of not processing outgoing btc because travels, credential issue this and that, then it continues for days. I hope what they are telling is true. But a business needs to be more serious about their customers' funds.
Agreed.

I wrote this 2 days ago:
So, to summarize (and correct me if I got anything wrong):
  • The website isn't profitable (yet)
  • Deposits are working
  • The website claims to pay a very high 12% APR on deposits
  • The daily awards aren't always being added
  • Withdrawals stopped working 5 days ago
  • The signature campaign payments happen off-chain and thus can't be withdrawn now
  • User whirlwindmoney hasn't been here for more than a month
  • Support doesn't respond to inquiries
No matter what the reason is, this looks bad.
By now, I think this topic deserves a Flag. Given the decentralized nature of the website, it's going to be difficult to prove someone was a victim for a type 2 or 3 Flag, but if someone wants to create a Newbie warning Flag, I'll Support it. If OP returns and resolves all issues I'll gladly Oppose the Flag, but until then, I think a yellow warning banner is warranted.
3609  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: List of all Bitcoin addresses with a balance on: August 16, 2023, 12:22:29 PM
if I run my own full node, how can I generate the same TSV file as is available on loyce.club site? (all addresses with balance)
As far as I know, all you need for this is the data in the "chainstate" directory, which isn't that much. There are a few parsers out there, just try to find which one you like.
I don't need more frequent updates, so I never setup my own parser.
3610  Other / Meta / Re: Igebotz Nigerian Local Board Merit Source Application on: August 16, 2023, 12:15:48 PM
Isn't that exclusively for posts on the English board?
If you check the rules set by LoyceV, there's no mention that submitted posts should be in English.
Correct. Links to any language are okay in Report unmerited good posts to Merit Source. I usually don't have the time to go over them through Google translate myself, but other Merit sources can still Merit them.
3611  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Whirlwind.money | ⚡No Fee⚡ | Ultimate Privacy | Anonymity Mining 12% APR🔥 on: August 14, 2023, 11:08:15 AM
At same time, the funds for escrow were for the review campaign, which is ended. So it's possible that MJ returned the funds already.
Minerjones agreed to this:
ANN design was updated, see first post in this thread. It now includes a step-by-step walkthrough showing all actions you can make on our our website.

The 40,000 DAI are still in escrow with minerjones and we are able to send much more than that if the risk of us stealing the funds proves to be the problem
Is this confirmed by minerjones somewhere? I only found this post, but there are no details.

Also (I remember this case): what are the details of the escrow deal? Considering the purpose, it would be good if the deal includes a 7 day delay once you request to pay it back, including the escrow publicly announcing the change 7 days ahead.
The initial escrow deal was that we were supposed to receive the funds back when the review campaign ended a while ago. We did not request the funds back so they are still with minerjones. We'd be happy to adhere to the 7 day delay rule you proposed, and I will ask minerjones if it's possible for him to confirm here that this rule will be enforced and the amount held by him at the moment.

Confirming there are still 40k+ DAI in escrow
And I was not aware of the 7-day release rule, but will enforce this when asked for the funds return

It's a good thing that minerjones keeps $40k in escrow, so there is a possibility for forum users to be compensated. Maybe he can confirm the current status of those funds.[/list]
Deposits to the multisig addy in the last few days alone are more than that in just the last 5 days. I just (only now) realize that makes the escrow partially useless: if there would be an exit scam, it would be trivially easy to fake losses to claim back the escrow as a victim.
3613  Other / Meta / Re: Whats your take on adding 2FA key as a Bitcointalk account security features. on: August 14, 2023, 10:04:40 AM
I've an account at a website. It's mandatory to change password after six months so when I'm logging in they'll force me to change it
Forced password changes increase the risk instead of making it safer. See:
Changing password and email occasionally has always been a good security practice what changed now?
People realized it was stupid in the first place Wink

    Read the NCSC:
Regular password expiry is a common requirement in many security policies. However, in the Password Guidance published in 2015, we explicitly advised against it. This article explains why we made this (for many) unexpected recommendation, and why we think it’s the right way forward.

Let’s consider how we might limit the harm that comes from an attacker who knows a user’s password. The obvious answer is to make the compromised password useless by forcing the legitimate user to replace it with a new one that the attacker doesn’t know. This advice seems straightforward enough.

The problem is that this doesn’t take into account the inconvenience to users - the ‘usability costs’ - of forcing users to frequently change their passwords. The majority of password policies force us to use passwords that we find hard to remember. Our passwords have to be as long as possible and as ‘random’ as possible. And while we can manage this for a handful of passwords, we can’t do this for the dozens of passwords we now use in our online lives.

To make matters worse, most password policies insist that we have to keep changing them. And when forced to change one, the chances are that the new password will be similar to the old one.

    Attackers can exploit this weakness.

The new password may have been used elsewhere, and attackers can exploit this too. The new password is also more likely to be written down, which represents another vulnerability. New passwords are also more likely to be forgotten, and this carries the productivity costs of users being locked out of their accounts, and service desks having to reset passwords.

It’s one of those counter-intuitive security scenarios; the more often users are forced to change passwords, the greater the overall vulnerability to attack. What appeared to be a perfectly sensible, long-established piece of advice doesn’t, it turns out, stand up to a rigorous, whole-system analysis.

The NCSC now recommend organisations do not force regular password expiry. We believe this reduces the vulnerabilities associated with regularly expiring passwords (described above) while doing little to increase the risk of long-term password exploitation. Attackers can often work out the new password, if they have the old one. And users, forced to change another password, will often choose a ‘weaker’ one that they won’t forget.

Or PCMag: Stop Changing Your (Strong, Unique) Passwords So Much.

So, I am not 100% clear why I see his feedback, because I don't have on my trust list any of the two that have included him.
User hopenotlate is included by yahoo62278, who is included by suchmoon, who is included by you.
That puts suchmoon on your Depth 0, yahoo62278 on your Depth 1 and hopenotlate on your Depth 2. See Trust Depth viewer, I haven't updated it in a while, but it shows the large recursive implications of adding someone to your Trust list.

We just have to hope that the next ICO/DeFi/NFT/Ordinal pump and dump scam isn't built directly on top of bitcoin.
They should use the power of the Lightning Network. How great would it be: one centrally controlled token-channel and they can do all the BS they want without bugging the rest of the Bitcoin users (and at the same time promoting the use of LN (although not in the best possible way)).

I'm curious to why you believe that we'll see again mempool states that will allow such low fee rates. Not yet sure, if I can say, I almost lost faith.
The same happened in 2017, and high fees didn't last. I'm not in a rush for those consolidations, if it takes a year, that's okay.

    Quote
This Ordinals, inscriptions or BRC20 shit doesn't seem to fade out. It's my habit to almost daily take a look at the pending transactions state, be it on https://mempool.space or https://mempool.jhoenicke.de/#BTC,1w,weight,0. Sadly, I had to get used to seeing a few hundred thousands of pending transactions as "normality". That makes fee rates near 1-2 sat/vB almost impossible.
Of course it will disappear, just like all the other money grabbing schemes before this. That happens the moment there's nobody left to throw more money at the hype, or when they come up with the next money grabbing scheme. Give it time.

    buy 2 bingo machines
Flipping a coin (or throwing a dice) enough times is a lot more compact.

not against using a six side die but how do I insure the picking pattern?

it is easy with 2 bingo machines
You don't select words, you select bits. The easiest representation I've seen is Bitcoin Visual private key generator. This creates a private key instead of a seed phrase, but the principle behind it is more or less the same. Note that this visual generator is mostly for educational purposes, you shouldn't use it for actual funds unless you know what you're doing.
3620  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is there a possibility to Fix Neutral Trust? on: August 13, 2023, 11:43:20 AM
If you just want to make those neutral feedback moved from "Trusted feedback" to "Untrusted feedback", convince member DT1/DT2 to exclude member who gave you neutral feedback.
That only works if the feedback is incorrect.

    Quote
But otherwise, you need to convince them to remove the neutral feedback.
Whenever someone complains about feedback, there are usually 2 outcomes: when the complaint is justified, the feedback is removed or the user gets excluded. But when the feedback is deserved, it usually leads to more feedback from others. And that's the case here.
