'After almost a year of, on and off, work on FORKING EMC2 into GPU friendly chain, Ethash Algo combined with Einsteinium Core is now stable project. Major vulnerabilities and minor bugs are removed and wallet is proved to be resistant on malicious attacks related with algo change.
Team was analyzing different possible solutions for mining pool implementation. Combination of well proved algo such as Ethash and stable, long term project such as EMC2, involved some new implementation difficulties. Einsteinium is Bitcoin like project that uses different block structure unlike Ethereum. New attributes are added to original block structure in order to support Ethash algo. In similar way, existing Ethereum Stratum pool is modified to work with EMC2 RPC API and vice versa. New stratum pool proved proof of concept and support multiple types of workers that use Ethminer, but still requires testing with various ranges of hash power with coin difficulty monitoring.
Adding new attributes into original block structure requires EMC2 chain replication in order to keep funds to original users wallets. Team is now working on this delicate piece of code that will converts original EMC2 chain into new one, that will be used for new coin.
Analysis of the previous problems with Wormhole feature, shows it’s main disadvantages which is the main reason why this feature was excluded from EMC2. But Wormhole was a very strong idea of rewarding loyal miners which should not be excluded. With Komodo support, already tested dPoW and some changes into block reward implementation, great Wormhole will be back again! Developers are now working on new implementation which will combine good old features with some major improvements.
At the end of preparing new coin, it’s needed to perform some regular fork changes into wallet implementations that will make new coin unique in a crypto world, regardless of some major and already unique changes described here.'

Before Christmas Cryptpoia sent out a blanket email stating that they had been hacked by 100+ alt coins (via a 51 % attack) and were closing those markets.

As a client of the exchange I probably have more $ at risk than most. You are correct that their staff have instructed not to make any statements. Most are on leave as the offices are considered a crime scene. The other incidents last year that you mentioned are different. A 51% attack by definition is a blockchain based attack. https://www.investopedia.com/terms/1/51-attack.asp It means the blockchain has been exploited and fraudulent transactions by a single attacker have caused the genuinely mined transactions to be discarded through chain re-organisation and orphaned. Some reputable devs have re-embused their customers that have been affected by a blockchain 51% attack. A coin network that allows a 51% attack double spend happen is neither decentralized nor immutable. Both of which are essential for a trustless network. Many coins have changed from POW to Hybrid, POS or a more complex algo or discontinued because they are unable to prevent attacks on the coin network. We offered reimbursement for initial wave, but it did not work out, as Cryptopia has requested full amount of 10 days of hacking which was close to 2 Millions of EMC2. They also have great native UI which was fun to use, very comfortable. It is unfortunate what happened, but keep in mind that some big exchanges went through the same. If they manage to come back, they will come stronger and better. It is part of growing process. We wish them all the best. |

In reference to Cryptopia’s notice about EMC2 wallet:

10 December 2018 - Our EMC2 market pause is ongoing, as we have determined that this coin suffered a 51% network attack in September, and associated issues have not yet been resolved with the development team. We will provide further updates as they become available, apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience in the meantime.
’
Here is our statement/update:
The issue with Cryptopia that differs from other exchanges is that Cryptopia did not have monitoring tools in place for EMC2 and probably not for other coins also, and let attack continues for 10 days.
In situations of 51% attack, exchanges usually close the doors immediately, and work with the development teams on estimating possible financial impact and applying updates to close security holes or to push major security improvements, what EMC2 did.
Security part was covered by implementing KMD dPoW which protects coin from further threats.
Other exchanges already updated the wallet and let the market go. EMC2 is well protected now.
On financial side, through emails, we agreed with Cryptopia to keep the market running even before Lightsaber release and to do a refund up to 200k of EMC2 in the case of attack. At that time Cryptopia was not affected by those 51% attacks.
200k of EMC2 was taken as the number that matched the daily volume on Cryptopia and was also amount that Einsteinium Foundation was comfortable with to do refund. Double spent trades are only percentage of total daily trades, thus 200k of EMC2 was more than enough as insurance.
Back to the the topic - the issue with Cryptopia is simply that they were not aware that they’ve been hacked until we asked them to upgrade the wallet to Lightsaber, so they performed sum check and noticed missing coins.
They came back to Einsteinium asking to cover the total of 10 days hacking which is 1,788,545 EMC2 coins.
Einsteinium Foundation does not want (nor can) to go over agreed 200k.
Accepting refund would mean accepting other costs and putting market back to normal.
It is on Cryptopia now to make the next turn and to let the public know what is their course of action.
