401  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Microsoft Researchers Suggest Method to Improve Bitcoin Transaction Propagation on: November 13, 2011, 10:10:10 AM
Added a link to a simplified summary of the paper for those who don't want to read through all the math.

Good idea. Your link appears to be broken though.
403  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Microsoft Researchers Suggest Method to Improve Bitcoin Transaction Propagation on: November 13, 2011, 04:02:14 AM
They start with the assumption only miners relay transactions.

That's exactly the opposite of what they wrote. What they are trying to improve is this: every node relays transactions, but only miners get paid (i.e. there is no incentive to relay a transaction. Actually, transaction fees are an incentive not to relay transactions)

Quote
Bitcoin, which has been getting a large amount of public attention over the last year, represents a radical new approach to monetary systems which has appeared in policy discussions and in the popular press. Its cryptographic fundamentals have largely held up even as its usage has become increasingly widespread.

We find, however, that it exhibits a fundamental problem of a different nature, based on how its incentives are structured. We propose a modification to the protocol that can fix this problem.

Bitcoin relies on a peer-to-peer network to track transactions that are performed with the currency. For this purpose, every transaction a node learns about should be transmitted to its neighbors in the network. As the protocol is currently defined and implemented, it does not provide an incentive for nodes to broadcast transactions they are aware of. In fact, it provides a strong incentive not to do so. Our solution is to augment the protocol with a scheme that rewards information propagation

405  Economy / Marketplace / Re: will Sepa come back to Tradehill? on: November 12, 2011, 01:58:27 PM
Auctioning them at ebay is not a good idea. I occasionally use Bitmarket. Prices are a little off sometimes, but it works fine. bitcoin-otc is also nice, if you are into IRC and GPG.

Anyway, hopefully SEPA will be coming back to TradeHill soon.
406  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is Better on: November 11, 2011, 02:28:45 PM
Just make sure that the search results are good.  Sometimes people feel the need to find something.  They are less likely to feel it is a scam if they went out and looked for it.

Currently they're not great... But I like the slogan.

Where are you from?
408  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Would people be willing to sell BTC for paypal if..... on: November 10, 2011, 11:54:53 PM
It is an interesting idea, but I am not sure if people would use it. Since it is against the ToS, people might not want to associate themselves with this kind of trades.
409  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Private key QR redemption on: November 10, 2011, 01:12:12 PM
Maybe I'm not articulating this well. Is there anyone working on a smartphone website or app that simply asks to scan a QR code containing Bitcoin? I would like to be able to give someone a scratch-off card with bitcoin value that they can easily spend online to buy things like debit cards and gifts.

I don't think it exists, yet.
410  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: So I'm up to 17.8 GH/S and it's costing me $250 a month for electricity. on: November 10, 2011, 06:38:12 AM
Aren't you in one of those places where electricity is "cheaper by the dozen"? The more you consume, the less you pay.
411  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OKPAY accepting bitcoin as a deposit method on: November 10, 2011, 05:56:25 AM
So you send them BTC and they convert it to USD? Has anyone tried?
412  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking to buy bitcoins on: November 09, 2011, 10:17:48 PM
and after i buy Linden Dollars where can i switch them to bitcoins?

TradeHill
CampBX
MtGox

If you can wait a few days and do a bank transfer to one of those sites, you don't have to go through all that Linden Dollars trouble.
413  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Please help me crack my 7z encrypted wallet on: November 09, 2011, 07:00:59 PM
If you get no answers here. I would try the poweruser form on stack exchange.  Just say it is a 7z file not need to talk about wallets or bitcoin.  I have found stack exchange very helpful finding esoteric things.

You mean SuperUser

Saw this on reddit awhile back.

Lists all ATI models and you can sort on which statistic is the most important.

Thank you.

You are aware of this article right? https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

I have pasted this link here so many times that maybe I should put it in the signature or something.
415  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where are the arbiters? on: November 09, 2011, 07:59:50 AM
Too bad there's not a good way to get money into Tradehill quickly.

It would seem that if you can't get funds in and out it is not really an exchange...

There is bitinstant but apparently they are out of funds, again.
416  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: bitcoinity.org/markets - live mtgox & tradehill charts on: November 09, 2011, 07:35:29 AM
As you can see there is "volatile" region with low $2.83 - $2.85. It can not be happen because

Aren't you looking at data from TradeHill?
417  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where are the arbiters? on: November 09, 2011, 06:31:06 AM
And it is happening again: TradeHill at 2.85 and MtGox at 3.05
418  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where are the arbiters? on: November 08, 2011, 03:24:44 PM
Yeah I looked into it a couple months ago when my expanded farm started creating a solid flow of cash & BTC at both exchanges but the amounts were so small and fleeting I said MEH.  The crappy thing is I just had Tradehill send a check for $500 on Friday so it limited what I could grab.

Most opportunities are < 3% and gone within minutes, but occasionally there are bigger ones.

Arbitrage bots have been losing much more money with the price fluctuation in the last months than they have been earning with the trades.
419  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where are the arbiters? on: November 08, 2011, 03:02:18 PM
Strange usually arbitrages that easy don't happen.

Not a speculator but I picked up 100 BTC.  That was too easy. I wish I had more USD @ TradeHill.

I've been  doing arbitrage for 4 months and it's the first time I have seen a big opportunity stay up for so long (it has been several hours now). Anyway, I also ran out of money at TradeHill Tongue
420  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: No wonder TradeHill has low market share? (BitInstant is broken.) on: November 08, 2011, 02:21:09 PM
Bitinstant was not created by TradeHill. They are a recent service that allows you to make instant deposits between exchanges, but they only work with TradeHill for now. There are a few other deposit methods at TradeHill.
