And in C++ you have a 64 bit integer that goes up to 9.2 quadrillion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primitive_data_type).

int64 goes up to 9.2 quintillion.

2.1 quadrillion units fits accurately in an IEEE double-precision floating-point number, but 21 quadrillion units would not fit. Double-precision numbers aren't used in the core Bitcoin network, but they are frequently used by programs that interact with Bitcoin, so being able to store BTC values accurately in doubles is very useful. I'd guess that this was something Satoshi thought about when deciding the money limits.

I unbanned the IP address and the account. I also restored the post.

Ho riammesso l'indirizzo IP e l'account. Ho anche ripristinato il post.

You should contact all of the people you owe money and renegotiate your debt with them. A lot of people would probably be willing to forgive your debt entirely or take only a small percentage.
4188  Other / Off-topic / Re: Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz commits suicide on: January 15, 2013, 04:25:28 AM
Seeing the results of government oppression always makes me really sad. I hadn't even heard of Aaron Swartz before this, but this incident bothers me more than similar ones (which are far too common) because I probably would've also been tempted to publicly release the PACER and JSTOR stuff if I had access. And it's such a shame to lose such an intelligent person.

I hope he died mostly because of his mental illness and not because he saw no other way out of his situation. That'd make it a little less sad in my mind.

Ironically, Swartz was a statist. He wanted to increase the power of government even as he was fighting against government corruption/oppression. I guess it would make some sense to propose eliminating government corruption and then increasing government power, but like most statists he didn't notice this problem. (Not that this flaw made him a bad person overall. He probably had a very positive net impact on the world.)

Can admin let us know where the hits came from?

reddit and Hacker News.

25% of queries are delivered from the query cache, which seems pretty good.

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.25.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done. I also post periodic status updates which should help make things clear.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.

4194  Other / Off-topic / Re: Computer Users to Disable Java (Important News) on: January 13, 2013, 05:30:07 AM
in some things java is MUCH faster.

Whenever this is the case (which is rare), the C++ program can always be made faster. The reverse is not true of Java. HotSpot is itself written in C++, so no Java program is going to be faster than an optimal C++ program.

Oracle's JRE is terrible. Security vulnerabilities are found all the time. Someone should write a more secure replacement. Flash, too.

Is mysql query cache enabled? AFAIK it is disabled by default and can really improve DB performance.

You can check with a SQL query:
Code:
Show variables like 'query_cache_size';
(0=disabled)

Thanks, I'll try enabling that!
4199  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Holy F***, what is happening? Most Users Online today since 1 and 1/2 Years! on: January 11, 2013, 10:13:09 PM
well how to fix that?

More memory, faster CPU, faster disk. Maybe the mysql configuration could be improved, but I don't know much about that. mysqld seems to be CPU-bound.

The traffic will probably go back down soon. If not, I'll find a solution.

8-CPU Lease LSWS Enterprise
8-CPU Leased license of LiteSpeed Web Server Enterprise Edition
$92.00 USD Monthly
$999.00 USD Annually

Seeing as these forums are making more than this weekly, seems like this should be whats purchased.

It's not much better (if any better) than the best open-source solutions. And I trust open source software more. If Apache does become the bottleneck at some point, I'd probably switch to nginx.
4200  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Holy F***, what is happening? Most Users Online today since 1 and 1/2 Years! on: January 11, 2013, 09:45:46 PM
I believe that the bottleneck is the database, not the web server.
