3681  Other / Meta / Re: Adblock Plus censoring posts on: May 27, 2013, 04:22:29 PM
And what if the JS becomes blocked?

ABP can't block inline JS.
3682  Other / Meta / Re: Adblock Plus censoring posts on: May 27, 2013, 03:45:43 AM
I came up with a way to cleanly bypass this in Firefox with JavaScript (not yet implemented), but not Chrome yet. Does anyone know how to detect whether ABP blocked a particular element in Chrome using JavaScript?

I would just logout everyone who was detected using adblock.
Try to use the forum while logged out if you prefer to keep ABP on Grin

Too many people would be driven away from the forum if I did that.

I actually don't care about the ads that much. The forum's income is much higher than necessary for its survival, and the ads probably aren't necessary for executing the forum's mission (though they help). But:
- If we're selling ads, I want them to be as effective as possible (without being annoying).
- I want the ad impression stats to be accurate.
- I'm annoyed that some people seem to think that all websites should just silently "take it" when their ads are blocked, or seek permission from the ABP organization if they want to keep displaying ads. I'm not going to do that. If EasyList wants to block the forum's ads, they're going to have to work for it.
- I'm now very irritated that EasyList maintainers fucked up the forum just to block a few unobtrusive links.
3683  Other / Meta / Adblock Plus censoring posts on: May 26, 2013, 03:48:34 PM
The Adblock Plus EasyList maintainers couldn't block the forum's ads, so they just blocked the links in the ads everywhere on the forum. So that's why you might see posts censored like this:

What website are you looking at? Clicking through the ad goes to http://butterflylabs.com/products?s1 and lets you checkout without ever mentioning the pre-order status. That's no giant "PRE-ORDER NOW" button. That's a giant ORDER NOW button.

Thanks for great feedback! In Finland we use decimal comma. OP edited.

What do you think, is it better that buying the option is a direct blockchain transaction that can be verified, or is it trustable enough if we build this on a similar easywallet urlpassword userinterface as eg. https://bitcoinvideocasino.com/?r=1813514798 ?

The latter would offer much better userfriendlyness but also require better security. The former has very few attack vectors and is almost DDOSproof.

There's nothing I can change in the forum's HTML to stop this. This isn't a side-effect of my anti-ABP code. If you don't want posts censored, you need to disable ABP (or just these filters) on bitcointalk.org. You can complain about it here.
3684  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 83 on: May 26, 2013, 01:18:29 AM
From this round forward, hero members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators will have the option of disabling ads. People who don't see ads due to this will obviously not count toward the number of impressions. This option is buried in the profile settings, so I don't expect this to affect impression stats or ad efficacy significantly, but I'll guarantee at least 420,000 impressions per slot for this round.
3685  Other / Meta / Re: Forum ads now blocked by AdBlock Plus EasyList on: May 26, 2013, 01:07:10 AM
I'll add an option next week allowing hero members, Donators, and VIPs to disable advertisements.
3686  Other / Meta / Re: Forum ads now blocked by AdBlock Plus EasyList on: May 25, 2013, 10:57:20 PM
Is it possible to make ads optional for donators/VIPs?

Possible, but do they really bother you that much? I read the forum more than most, and I hardly notice the ads. I'm afraid that if I give people the option, many people will hide ads even when they don't really care whether they see ads or not, just because they can.

Not to nitpick, theymos, but your PGP-signed message isn't specific enough. If this forum were compromised, that message could have been taken from you years ago.

PGP messages contain a timestamp.
3689  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [TO THEYMOS AND MODS] BFL scammer tag? on: May 25, 2013, 05:14:27 AM
It's unlikely that BFL will ever get scammer tags for the ASICs because it's not at all clear what a preorder actually entails. I doubt that the preorder agreement (if there is one) specifies exact deadlines or specifications. I think that they'd avoid a scammer tag if they delivered some somewhat-decent mining device or gave USD-denominated refunds within a year.

The bet is another matter. I haven't looked into it yet.

I said previously that I would consider not accepting their advertising if they didn't make much progress within a few weeks. They have made progress. Several people received devices.

Extended to PMs and many other boards (Trading discussion and subsections, Mining and subsections, Newbies, alt cryptocurrencies, and some local sections).
3692  Other / Meta / Re: Forum ads now blocked by AdBlock Plus EasyList on: May 25, 2013, 02:31:56 AM
Let's see 'em block this. There's now a random number of invisible "posts" before and after the ad, and they're all (I think) indistinguishable from real posts if you're limited to just CSS selectors. Hopefully the filter maintainers aren't careless or they'll end up blocking random posts.
3693  Other / Meta / Re: @bitcointalk.org emails on: May 24, 2013, 04:09:20 PM
Nah, then I'd have to worry constantly about keeping the email service working.
3694  Other / Meta / Re: Marketplace trust on: May 24, 2013, 03:53:29 PM
New number in brackets? I thought it was the number of people that have trusted that user in your trust network, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

EDIT: Number of users directly in your trust list that have gave positive feedback?

One person in your trust network can increase the third number to infinity (maybe literally). The fourth number in parenthesis can't be manipulated so easily. It's a rough approximation of the number of trust points from distinct users per month. So if I rate someone 3 times in one month and 3 times in another month, the fourth number should be 6. But if I rate them 1000 times in one month, their fourth number should be ~5. (But it's actually only an approximation of this.)

I needed to get this number for the trust score anyway, so I thought I'd include it.

The trust score is currently calculated like this:
floor((min(fourth_number,10*months_since_first_positive_report)/10)^2*months_since_first_positive_report - distinct_scam_reporters * scam_factor)

Where scam_factor starts at 0.5 and increases by 1 if the newest scam report is less than 7 days old and by 3 if months_since_first_positive_report is less than 2.

It will be more clear in a couple months whether this is a good algorithm. I'll tweak it more then.

Fixed.
3696  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 83 on: May 23, 2013, 09:18:40 PM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software and for other useful purposes, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Seven of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts at least 7 days starting from when I put it up. (However, if you look at the ad history you'll see that ads frequently get 1-2 extra days, but this is random and definitely not guaranteed.)

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Info about the current ad slots:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all seven slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 7 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 7 slots. If the two highest bids are 7 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 6 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.25.
- The bidding starts at 0.50.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done. I also post periodic status updates which should help make things clear.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.

OK.
3700  Other / Meta / Re: Marketplace trust on: May 23, 2013, 06:41:10 AM
It would be nice if there was a way to specifically exclude someone from the trust list. In the mean time, trust level 0 will only trust the people you specifically put on your list.

Yeah. It'd also be better to be able to give a score to each person on your trust list which limits how much their ratings count toward the scores. But the current system is a lot easier and more efficient. It'll be good enough for now.
