This is a test of human nature, as well as a cleverly disguised data mining project. The person that stops handing it on will be labelled a scammer, unless it is donated to a charity probably, and in the mean time all kinds of interesting info can be gleaned about the users because their address is positively tied to them.

How about using thermogenerators to power wireless and cooling fan or a peltier? Once programmed via USB then they only need to connect to a power source. See micropelt.
Peltier chips are able to cool things well, but they suck up enormous amounts of energy and spit out a heck of a lot of heat.

Empty blocks should not be accepted if there are a certain number (value?) of waiting transactions.
This is the best idea I heard up to now. At least would keep the network working. This would suck for those that might occasionally get partitioned off the main net, which happens occasionally. But if that were the problem, they probably wouldn't be getting valid blocks out in enough time anyway. This is an interesting concept however, but I'm fairly sure it would be non-trivial to implement.

As of currently, the BFL units don't play nice with p2pool, although that could be changed with a firmware update.

The disk write/read speeds is the biggest issue with AWS. We did some testing and it just couldn't keep up with the even a small load. They've done a lot of changes recently and it may be better now.

Guys the change is just to ease the pressure on the system while the new cluster comes up. This is nothing more than a short term fix. The old way will be back, better and more reliable.
Can your transaction logs be stored with NoSQL or an equivalent, or must they be in a standard relational database? Was just looking at this: http://aws.amazon.com/dynamodb/ and wondered if it could be cost effective while maintaining extremely high performance. We use MongoDB now. I'm not sure what you are referring to. Amazon's service is too slow for what we need. MogngoDB is a NoSQL non-relational db which is similar to Amazon's service. However yes it probably would be slower if you are hosting the server in one place and the database in another. If it were all on AWS, I'd be interested in the performance. Our company has a high performance distributed logging system that is not the same as this but somewhat similar in scale, and we are getting ready to set it up with AWS. I guess that will tell me whether the performance is anything close to a local cluster, but it is nice that there is no hardware to manage now.

Does anyone know if there are plans for a p2pool WITHOUT bip16 support come april 1st? Would p2pool be robust enough to work in a mixed client scenario?
It seems to me like there could be quite a few miners who like the idea and lower variance of p2pool but would also like some say in which changes get accepted into the bitcoin protocol.
The support is based on the client that each p2pool user is running, and whoever solves the block is the one that gets the "vote" That being said however, voting is pretty much over and P2SH is going ahead anyway, so if you don't support it you risk your blocks becoming orphan, and you not getting any payout at all. That would include all p2pool miners' payouts from a non supported bitcoind, since it is split.
