Is it just a typo? Because as far as I know the correct one is PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) Public Key.
It is a typo and you make me surprised that I did neither notice the typo nor many guests of this thread. I therefore much thankful for your typo finding. After month, it has been corrected.
4262  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Price of Bitcoin, gold and the unemployment rates in the USA. on: October 28, 2020, 04:18:52 PM
"Never be correct", even if both assets were literally moving together for months? While they've moved the opposite ways recently, it still doesn't change the fact that they were somewhat correlated. This isn't even an opinion. It's just data.
"All models are wrong" according to George Box.

There are many contributors (variables) to a model. You have to make decisions to keep this variable while exclude another variable. No matter the final models you like the most are, all of them are wrong at somewhat levels and at some points of time. Model A can be right today but it will be wrong later. The unbelievable weak down in March of 2020 is a lively example for this. There is no model can control all those things.

The amazing thing is if you can build a good model from which you can get some points to use. It is not perfect but you can use with your awareness of uncertainty. Models are built from past conditions, data and with the assumption that future conditions won't change much. In reality, life is different and it happens in uncontrollable way.

4263  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Block Halving on: October 27, 2020, 12:32:57 PM
Using the 30 days MA will always give you "terrible" results, the number of blocks found in 30 days is a drop in the ocean as far as the 210,000 blocks are concerned, so getting 7 years halving estimate is pretty normal, getting 2 years is also nothing out of the ordinary, can you do another analysis from the last halving to the latest block? one more thing, you should use block time, ignore the confirmation thing, I remember you made a topic about empty blocks? you could use the same data from LoyceV.
Thank you.

It is my mistake from carelessness with the likely wrong term from bitinfocharts.com. From my mistake, I looked back and see they use confirmation time ~ block time.

This discussion sheds a light for me that the confirmation time shows how generous or parsimonious or relevant people do their bitcoin transactions over time. There are some factors behind (knowledge, practice, skills, urgent needs, etc.) but somewhat can give us some ideas.

I would like to know what Mitchell has to say about the template.
You can find it in OP. Template is only one part of previous posts.

Local rules:
  • The only allowed posts are about updates to the OP or available spots for campaigns.
  • Posts about available spots for campaigns should be removed when they become obsolete.
  • Discussion about campaigns are strictly forbidden (unless it's really relevant, which in 99% of the cases, it isn't).
4265  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Block Halving on: October 27, 2020, 12:16:21 PM
That's the confirmation time for a transaction, it is not really correlated with the time between blocks although it can be influenced by it, just look at how that thing is looking for the last year, if it were like that we would be seeing the next halving in 8 years as for the last month we've had an average confirmation time of around 20 minutes.

This is the block time, showing the average time between blocks:
https://bitinfocharts.com/comparison/bitcoin-confirmationtime.html#6m
I am sorry for my mistake. I did not carefully notice it. Confirmation time is affected by fee rate each transaction is set up with. Firstly with Raw value option, I see the fluctuation around 10 mins and not check more. Thanks for your correction.

I knew the link you provided (thanks, of course). You post makes me wonder why bitinfocharts.com uses the term confirmationtime for block time. This somewhat causes my mistake (I did not do double check).  Lips sealed

It is a function of how full the mempool is, not how fast or slow the block time is. If I drop 500 MB of 1 sat/vbyte transaction in the the mempool right now, then even if we found a block every 5 minutes for the rest of the day the median confirmation time is going to be pushed up towards an hour. There is no direct correlation.
Yes. It is not a linear correlation.

In fact, hashrates rise significantly or falls dramatically over different period. Total blocks founds with short interval and total blocks found with long interval balance one another. It is what why the median value of block time is around 10 minutes. Miners (their greediness, over-mining activities or capitulations) can result in shortly impacts but in the long run, they can not.

Quote
Looking at the graph, there is also no way the average block time could have increased from 10 minutes to 17 minutes over the course of 3 months without a massive drop in hashrate. That's approximately 10-12 difficulty readjustments. For the difficulty to readjust 10-12 times, but the block time to continue to increase, there would have had to have been a huge and consistent loss of hashrate over the last 3 months, when in reality it has increased from ~120 EH/s to ~140 EH/s.
Thank you for the detailed explanation from which I learned something too. Again, the chart is taken from third party and its validity is unknown. I simply took it for these estimations.

Price of bitcoin has its impacts as well.

Lots of assumptions, lots of if. I am thankful to the difficulty adjustment that help the network works and halving intervals are almost stable.  Cheesy
4266  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Price of Bitcoin, gold and the unemployment rates in the USA. on: October 27, 2020, 08:04:37 AM
As for bitcoin specifically, it's a typical coin flip. If you'd ask me a month ago, I would say that bitcoin would continue to go up with the S&P500(because of government bailouts) but lately both assets have been going on their separate ways so we're back to extremely unpredictable territory.
All of such plots, correlations are for reference and for what happened, for the past. Forecasts are made by using past data and never be correct but among many useless or incorrect models, there are some good models that we can use.

Those possible lag effects are the decision made by different companies to layoff their employees. It might have been a hard time for them for sure, but that's the reality of what happened during the pandemic.
Delayed or lag effects here are from many factors:
- Delay of news released why we all knew the pandemic is there. WHO delayed to make a public announcement that it is a pandemic.
- Delay of data collection on unemployment rates till the monthly reports. Monthly reports are released on the first Friday of each calendar month.
- Delay of companies to reduce their human resources, etc.
- Delay of news effects on different local markets. Where is the geographical location the news is released initially? And how long till the news show its biggest effects globally?

About Bitcoin and gold, over history and in 2020 only, they are positively correlated with 7 days delay (not instantly or intraday). I can say so (with confirmation from data).  Cheesy

I think that these graphs may well correlate for this reason: It is no secret to anyone that the pandemic in the first place deals a very tangible blow to the US economy. The economy begins to suffer and, accordingly, large masses of people begin to seriously think about what to do with their savings so that they are not subject to inflation, and naturally some of these people turn their eyes towards bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. And thus, it can have a rather tangible effect on the price of bitcoin.
It is just partially true I think. Because the real momentum behind the iceberg is not from the pandemic, it happened and accumulated months before the pandemic announcement on March.

About people, there are many conservative people that you will almost never be able to convince them about bank system bailouts. They are more than ones you can convince and they are not real fuel for the rise of bitcoin, IMO.

I came back to WO today (with post, not simply read). Enjoy WO gang!  Tongue

What do you think of these charts?
  • How about the impacts of unemployment rates on price of Bitcoin and gold?
  • How about the impacts of pandemic on unemployment rates (in USA)?
Please make your own data interpretation with your trust on validity of those secondary data (data collection methodology, data cleaning and data analysing, etc.)

There are delayed (lag) effects on the pandemic and the unemployment rates. When the unemployment rates skyrocketted, bitcoin already rallied in V-shape. The announcement of the pandemic was made by WHO on 12 March 2020.

Halving happens for each 210 000 blocks but how long the interval between 2 consecutive halving days is a myth. No one can tell you exactly.

It depends on fluctuations or increases or decreases of block confirmation time within the all batch of 210 000 blocks. The chart shows you how the median confirmation time (block time) change over years. The plot is for 30-days MA.

Let's estimate the interval between 2 halvings based on 30-days MA of block time. In fact, I don't believe we will have to wait up to next 7 years (since May 2020) to see next halving. The plot shows regularly corrections of block time. Tongue
  • 10 minutes: 3.995 years
  • 15 minutes: 5.993 years
  • 17.76 minutes (current 30-days MA of block time): 7.096 years

4271  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Anyone here who can help me with a stuck BTC transaction on: October 27, 2020, 02:34:20 AM
If the average confirmation wait time for the 2 MB target from tip is between 1-5 minute then I think it won't be a problem if I use the 5 MB target from tip assuming that I will get confirmation between 20-30 minute of confirmation after the Transaction broadcast (also without ignoring the two factors above). But of course only do so if it's not in urgent circumstance.
You misunderstood it.

In average, block time is 10 minutes. And if the fee rate you use is 2 MB from the tip of mempool, it means you will likely have to wait till next 2 blocks to have first confirmation for your transaction. As I said, it depends on mempool condition changes and your luck. If after the timestamp you broadcast your transaction, mempool won't change much (won't increase much in size) and blocks are found superb fastly (within seconds or less than 10 minutes per each block), your transaction will be confirmed fastly.

However, when you estimate waiting time for your transaction, you should assume block time is 10 minutes. The plot (1-year window) shows you fluctuation of block time around 10 minutes. If you expand windows to more than 1 year (the second link), you can see there are times when block times are more than 20 minutes.

The luck I meant is third link. Sometimes blocks are found very fast but rarely to see. And it is more rarely to see if it is about 2 consecutive blocks. You can also see it with my analysis on empty block. Empty block is different but you can look at emptygap (in seconds) to get what I meant about luck.

1. How long will it take if I want to use transaction fees as I wish if the target I use is 2 MB from tip or how much time is required to process transaction per 1 MB using Mempool.
There are 2 things that will affect the waiting time of your transaction:
  • Mempool condition: will it remain stable or will it be loaded up more within short period?
  • The likelihood of next found blocks: how long next blocks will be found?

1. If mempool condition is stable, first you are lucky because no more waiting transactions with higher fee rates load up and your waiting time will depend on the second factor. If mempool is loaded up more, your waiting time will be longer than initial expectation.
2. The average block time is 10 minutes but time interval between 2 blocks can be in seconds, or longer than 10 minutes. It depends and you can not control it.

So I assumed mempool condition is almost stable, if the fee rate you use is 2 MB from the tip, that equals to 2 next blocks at the time you broadcast your transaction. The waiting time will be anywhere in between 1 or 2 minutes (rarely to see 2 new blocks are found within few seconds) to more than 20 minutes.

According to Dune Analytics, the trading volume at DEXs has fallen in the last 30 days by 40%.
< ... >
What do you think about this?
I could be wrong but to assess the trading activities of crypto market or of exchanges (centralized or decentralized, for your specific analysis) you should do it with 3 analyses at least:
  • Trading volume in total number of cryptocurrency traded
  • Trading volume in total amount of BTC traded
  • Trading volume in total amount of USD or USDT traded

It can help you to have different measure algorithms and avoid impacts from pumps or dumps of altcoins or tokens (in BTC or USDT trading pairs). Less volume in BTC or in USDT does not mean less trading activities. Same amount of altcoins or tokens are traded at different periods with different price of those altcoins/ tokens in BTC or USDT pairs can cause less value in total traded in BTC or in USDT.

Combine 3 analyses and get a whole picture will be better, I believe.

Maybe I have weird thoughts but I am open-minded and it is my own opinion.  Cheesy

Bumping because I think you should add Lauda's name to your list, as she was an upstanding member of the community and permanently left the forum a few days ago, erasing all avenues of coming back. For the legacy thread you can use Goodbye, world!.
Thank your for this post. I knew about the Lauda case but forgot to add it here.

It is a bad story and if you scan through the thread, Lauda is the first member left a reply here. I also quote my post in the "Goodbye, world" thread. OP will be updated soon.
I did not know Lauda too much but read Lauda's posts sometimes and his/her advise in my threads. I heard of cat drama years ago but never spent my time to read all about the drama.

Today, it is sad to see Lauda's goodbye thread.

I know how difficult to abandon the forum especially after you have spent years here, as a member and as a moderator. To mark your abandonment, I took the screenshot for you. Newbies, years later, will aks questions like "Who is Lauda?"

I wish you good health and good luck, Lauda.

You can get more information here.
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats
I have a thread for it but it was locked Impression counts for ads over years (Statistics) because I plan to integrate it into the forum's meta-data thread, Forum observations - new accounts, posts, topics, wokeups, merits, ad stats.

The last update for forum ad stats is there (click to have full details). Only the stats for total impressions has good recovery from its all time high and then year-lasting falls.

Coin-1 has a thread [Chart] Bitcointalk statistics on impression counts for ads.

Updates for 2020 only.

About Bech32-address, it has upwards trend in count and value over last 3 years (plots show that trend -- see in median and interquartile range, the vertical line and box, respectively). Pay your attention on axis-scales that are different over 3 years.

4279  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin transaction fees (in sats/kb). Sunday, Saturday are best to move BTC on: October 25, 2020, 11:08:44 AM
We are now somewhere in between 2-3 Sat/vByte. Looks like in the last 8 hours, it wasn't the perfect time for 1 Sat/vByte transactions. There are constantly 15-20MB of unconfirmed 1 Sat/vByte transactions in the mempool. It looks like 2 Sats is the goal for today.
Currently, it is a matter of 2 fee rates: 1 and 2 satoshi(s)/ (v)byte. If Bitcoin price won't have big changes and won't cause panic, I expect to see mempool will be dipped to 1 satoshi/ (v)byte today, in next few hours. The matter is will mempool be completely cleared? Maybe or maybe not, I don't know (it is a game of luck).

https://jochen-hoenicke.de/queue/#1,8h

Update for 26 Oct 2020, 3:47 AM UTC. Mempool is clearer and you can get instant transaction within next 1 block at 2 satoshis/ (v)byte. I am expecting to see mempool will completely cleared for all current waiting transactions at 1 satoshi/(v)byte around next 2 hours.
4280  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie Copper member and jr member to be restricted in altcoin bounties section on: October 25, 2020, 06:41:04 AM
Is it possible not to allow copper membership, jr.member to post in bounties altcoin section?
It is possible but it depends on the admin. From his moderation style, I don't think there will be more newbie jails or special restrictions on bounties (altcoins) subboards.

Even the Copper membership is not a mandatory if you want to open your account, and run a project's announcement thread here. Admin wants to keep the forum as fair as possible for the rich and the poor, for the old- and new-generations. We are all treated equally here.

Quote
The reputation in that section is already broken and the purpose of crowdfunding project has been defeated by people promoting scam and it is easy for them to do because they can get easy access in that section by using copper membership or jr.member rank with just 1 merit requirement and 30 activities for that rank and post their fake project.
You should call them as scam projects. The opposite of scam projects are good projects.
  • Fake >< Real
  • Scam >< Non-scam  and # than bad/ good
The world always has two sides in any aspect and we have to accept both two sides, leave with them, move forwards. What we must do is learn, practice and self-protect ourselves from scam projects, scammers.

Additionally, scam is not moderated on the forum.

Quote
Instead of reporting hundreds of them why not make it hard for them to make their scamming business?

I know it isn't about the rank but the scammers are using it for their advantage.
It does not make any sense because scammers can buy accounts and run their scam projects. Bought-accounts with rank at Full member and above look more trusted than Copper Member (with newbie rank) in the eyes of newbies. Consequently they might more easily to be scammed.  Lips sealed

Quote
I think at least we can rebuild the reputation of that area by not allowing them to post in that certain section.
Just let it be, I think.

The scam detectives, trust, feedback, and flag and contributions from community are enough to beat scam projects down. Reputation for that sub-board is almost zero.

If scammers run a scam project on the forum, it will be a matter of hours then scam detectives and forum's DT members will tag them (Red). The warning message for flag can help as well.

I checked and you already received answer in your another thread
Is there any by chance that those who buy copper membership will be ask of their purpose before approving their request on buying copper membership?
No. The forum administration doesn't want to decide who can or can't do things.

Quote
Largely scam projects or failing projects are created by them. There should be a way for them to stop their doings.
Educating people is the best way, scams aren't against forum rules and therefore not moderated.

theymos' opinion
Limiting newbie participation is very harmful for a community. Newbie jail will never return: I consider the newbie-jail period to have been extremely damaging to the forum. When barriers to participation are too high, then the best people often just won't go to the trouble of joining, and the people who are willing to jump through the hoops are often people who aren't good for the community: people with nothing better to do, scammers, get-rick-quickers, etc. Having a permanent newbie jail policy would improve things a lot in the short-term, but would end up being a fatal poison to the community.

The low signal-to-noise is a real issue which seriously annoys me and is often on my mind. But as you mention, fixing it non-destructively is difficult.

Edit:
It is possible but it depends on the admin. From his moderation style, I don't think there will be more newbie jails or special restrictions on bounties (altcoins) subboards.
I assume you're talking about Theymos
