441  Economy / Goods / Re: LAST CHANCE for new 5850 sapphire xtreme @ NCIX on: July 29, 2011, 11:05:26 PM
It's better to but and have it in your possession tore sell than say your going to get it.
lol what? i'm guessing you're trying to say it's better have it in my possession, then sell?

well if i have it my possession, that would mean that would have to ship to me, then it'll cost like another $10-15 to ship to the buy, which will increase the out the door price. i'm just seeing if someone wants it for lower than most places out the door.
Depending on how desperate they are to get it you could force them to pay the shipping Tongue
442  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What PSU should I buy? on: July 29, 2011, 05:28:19 PM
Each 5850 can draw up to 180~200W overclock, so you're looking at 600W + some for the system.
General rule of thumb, don't load a PSU constantly above 80%, maximum efficiency is usually around the 50~70% range.
Going by those limits, you're looking at 850W on the low side and 1300W on the high/safe side.
Anything in between should be OK.

Importantly, go for one with as high efficiency as you can, the amount of power drawn by mining makes the difference worthwhile.
Anything above 900 watts is extreme overkill if you go with a good brand.
443  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 6870 Vapor X. Anyone test it? Also single slot cards with mining power? on: July 29, 2011, 04:46:05 PM
I'm afraid of the price tag. (calculates per of rig with 7 of those....)
Yea I can only imagine the price lol. That and the total wattage used I believe is around 330 for each so 7x330=~2,300 watts so like I said earlier it isn't really cost effective because you'll need multiple super expensive psu's.
444  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 6870 Vapor X. Anyone test it? Also single slot cards with mining power? on: July 29, 2011, 04:37:23 PM
since the 6990 is dual gpu dual pcb i can't imagine anyone making a single slot model. a 6950 or 6970 perhaps i know there was one single slot 5830 as well.

If you're looking for a mining card, the 6870 isn't the best way to go for price.  As far as single slots, only ones I know about are the 6850 and 5770 single slots... surely there are others too.

I think I remember hearing about a single slot 6990 but with a card like that it doesn't really matter if its single slot because you cant really fit more then 4 cards (cost effectively) into one case anyway.
446  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What PSU should I buy? on: July 29, 2011, 02:52:33 PM
I agree basically with everything thats being said.
I have heard this corsair 750 watt is amazing.

If you don't get something like this bump it up to 900ish and you'll be fine.
447  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: alternative for 5850 on: July 29, 2011, 02:38:18 PM
Where did you find a 6870 for 155? The newegg link is for  175 unless you're including the mir which you can't if you're ordering multiple cards since only one qualifies.
I am including the mir but there are multiple cards at 155 with a mir.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150521 (159)

edit: I'd also like to point out a 6870 is slightly better that a 5850 on power consumption. I feel like thats negligible though.

2. I request a small commission to share the link that I spent my good time in finding. If you were too poor you could just say so and I'd give you the link. Is it this part that paints me as rude or insolent?
You were holding the link hostage you weren't asking for donations you wanted to be paid. I also feel like you had no intention of giving up that link for free or you'd have lost your bargaining chip.
3. A couple courteous persons request the link by pm, send me a donation, and find it doesn't work. No problem, I refund their money. Sounds pretty rude to me...
Again a donation is paying some one for something thats free not paying first then receiving a service. Also it's shady because lets be honest you have to pay for a link that most likely wont work for you. Regardless of the fact that you may or may not have refunded them. They paid for a service that wouldn't work for them because you weren't honest that it was a Canada only site.
3. I get called a "Dumbfuck" in two threads as well as a "douche" by a troll who has a crappy life and needs someone to take it out on. Who is the rude one here? Really?
To be fair the dude might have gotten carried away lol
4. The deal [THAT WORKED FOR ME BTW] is called shady by a crapload of people who wouldn't get the balls to even click the link. Erm, rude? Me?
No one said the deal wouldn't work but it is a Canadian site. Did you expect the majority of people to be able to use it? As to clicking the link part I have no clue what your talking about I actually checked to see if it had shipping to the US.

Regardless of my view of asking for donations(which I think is pathetic unless your releasing major software that took 8-10+ hours to make) you weren't asking for a donation.
449  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: alternative for 5850 on: July 29, 2011, 02:13:24 PM
Those rates are both well above what a average miner can expect. 5850S normally wish on at 360mh/s and 6850s at 213mh/s
I quoted the 6870 not 6850. Those are both the extremes of the card so its not like I wasn't equal to both cards. In the best case scenario thats the ratio you should expect from each and it should follow a similar pattern as you clock the cards less and less.
450  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Pci express splitter on: July 29, 2011, 02:10:22 PM
No it's 8. It's a driver limitation = Catalyst, not the OS.

Can you cite this? I remember seeing multiple times people saying linux can hold more. This is one of those times.
There are no myths here...

On windows, prior to driver 11.6 only 4 GPUs would work.

GPU does not equal a video card in this context...
Windows will recognize more than 4 video cards just fine... However, you won't be able to use more than 4 GPUs with 11.5 or below.

However, with 11.6 drivers, it looks like there's limited confirmation of 8 GPUs being the new limit.
On Linux there are rumors that the limit is at least 10 GPUs...
451  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Theory crafting on: July 29, 2011, 02:02:50 PM
maybe I don't know much about hardware but shouldn't some kind of 3rd-party cooling be *mandatory* on a mining rig?

otherwise your megahashes will fluctuate with the weather Cheesy

I'm not seeing any fans on your list.
Each card individually wont overheat if you control the clocks. It will overheat when the room temp reaches a certain point or if the cards are too close together. For all the rigs I'm separating them with risers and some I even used this example. http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=29729.0

I assume you could have one of these machines with minimal to no ac. If you were to mass produce something like this you'd probably need 24 7 ac in the summer.
452  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: alternative for 5850 on: July 29, 2011, 01:56:54 PM
:s 209 isn't worth it. Thats just too high. A 6870 can produce 330 megahash for the cost of 155(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948)

409/209=1.95
330/155=2.12

A 6870 is by no means a good card at its current price and it still beat this 5850.
453  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 85 mhs on a OC'ed i7-920 ?!?! on: July 29, 2011, 01:49:33 PM
hmm are you sure that's 85mh/s and not 8.5? i ran my i7 for a few sec just to test it, and i got like 3mh/s lol
Yea when I first got into mining I tried cpu mining and my i7-960 was only producing around 8-9 megahash.
454  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Pci express splitter on: July 29, 2011, 03:07:18 AM
hmm wonder how many cards i can cram on 1 motherboard like 20??

I think the current driver is limited to 8 cards.
Its 8 on windows. I'm pretty sure on linux its a bit higher.
455  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What's the latest on 7xxx series from radeon? on: July 29, 2011, 02:04:01 AM
Any estimates out yet on hashing speeds and power consumption?
No clue what hashing speeds would be but I assume it would be inefficient at the brand new price point. What will really be interesting is the price drop in the earlier series and what new opportunities we might have with currently inefficient cards.

Why bother???  a 5830 is much better
Personally I wouldn't, but with the 5k series getting harder to find I figured I'd pass on the deal info if someone was strategically positioned to pull the trigger on one.

6870 is $154 after rebate. Not quite a 5830 yet but it's pretty nice.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948
rebate is one per household most likely.
457  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Pci express splitter on: July 28, 2011, 10:48:46 PM

Indeed it would, the molex power adapter allows the card to pull that 75W directly from the PSU, instead of through the motherboard.

You only really need the 1x adapter with molex however, mining is not bandwidth intensive so you don't need all the lanes available to 8x or 16x
The 1x is less then a dollar difference in price so it doesn't really change things.

Edit: The site I'm about to post doesn't list prices at least that I see but take a look at this.

Hmm I wonder why that splitter looks so familiar...
lol I admit you got me excited Tongue I decided to test a theoretical build implementing it. Tongue
459  Economy / Goods / Re: [DEAL] Sapphire HD 5850s NEW 138.49 buy online on: July 28, 2011, 10:36:48 PM
any way to get these in the US?
Have a friend in canada ship them to you. A reputable canadian on this board might be willing to buy this for you and make you pay the shipping and maybe a 5% fee. That would still probably make it cheaper then the ncixus one.
460  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Theory crafting on: July 28, 2011, 10:32:07 PM
maybe if the 5970s were actually in stock... and i don't know about using server pcie splitters.... i think it's an expansion card specific to that system... but maybe they work, dunno
Yea I'm not sure if if the splitter would work and I'm just trying to be creative and get people to stop thinking so narrowly that the 5830 and the 5850 are the only option. There are builds out there that make other cards just as competitive.
