Wow, bitcoin in technical details!
No need to be sarcastic. Clearly this is a step in the right direction if amazon acknowledges its existence.

and shifted their goals to other cards in the 6xxx series or what not that have great rebates or have gone on sale recently.
Until we see a 20% drop in the 6xxx costs they will not be competitive with 5xxx cards. My hope is that when the 7xxx series is released that's when we will see this 20% drop. If it happens then there would a lot of effective cards that are easy to get on the market.

Amazon advertises Bitcoin mining, woohoo!

Technical Details
ATI Radeon 5970 PCI-E / PCI Express x16 Video Graphics Card Radeon HD 5970
Dual GPUs (Graphic Processor Units) with a total of 2GB GDDR5 Memory
Superior Gaming and Bitcoin mining performance
Multiple Monitor Support - Dual DVI and Mini Display Port
DirectX 11 and OpenGL 3.2 Support
That's actually pretty cool. Maybe in the future they will be one of the first major retailers to accept bitcoins.

but what I am interested in knowing if 5830s at $160 is still the best way to go... or perhaps 5970s at $500 a pop?
The 5970 is the best way to go if your looking for megahash per square foot otherwise don't bother with it.

A 5830 at 160 is a bad price. You can pick up a new 6870 which is basically the same for ~150. I would not recommend this though.

Your best bet is to wait for a 5830 at less then 130, a 5850 at less then 150 or a 5870 at 190-200.

At the top end of those prices a 5830 gives you 2.54 megahash per dollar. A 5850 gives 2.56 megahash per dollar. A 5870 at 200 will give atleast 2.2 (if its a reference card it would give 2.3)

Another thing you need to remember is the more it costs you for the entire server the more diluted those numbers become. Also keep in mind is sometimes more megahash per server is better then the original megahash per dollar for the card.

Current price is $8.84 from the last trade i saw. That's $159.12. Priority mail shipping will be ~$10, so that leaves me with $150 or so. the wiki lists price as $140. The cheapest new one I see on Amazon right now is $180 with 1 left.

So I don't think the pricing is all that bad, especially considering it's almost impossible to find now, brand new, and I'm accepting bitcoins. Smiley

I wont say they are easy to come by that would be a lie. However when you go above $150 your reaching brand new 6870 on newegg territory. 6870's require less power and its from newegg. No offense to you but newegg offers a 30 day refund/return on cards.

Sapphire Radeon 5830 1GB 100297-2L

This is one of the most best bang for the buck cards you can get, 285Mhash is easy to get. This card is almost impossible to find now as well, being guilty of probably higher performance per dollar than AMD intended.

New in box, unopened.

$162 for a 5830 is extremely overpriced. I hope no one is so desperate to pay that much.
187  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 7x 5830 in 1 rig and GPUs only at 75% load on: August 28, 2011, 10:09:34 PM
You only have 1 1200 watt psu for a 7x5830 rig?
yes...
u think i need an extra PS? i have more lying around
Each 5830 needs at least around 180 watts. 7x180=1,260 watts

That's before you take into account the rest of the rigs power needs. I'm almost positive its because you don't have enough watts. Try doing a dual power supply set up.

Oh hmm... I was hoping for something in the 40-42 BTC range.  They sell brand new from NewEgg for $499.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814105001
That person isn't the op just in case you didn't realize Wink
190  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: ATTN: Those seeking 5830/5850 cards... on: August 27, 2011, 03:53:41 PM
keep checking on a regular basis and you'll find brand new 5830 cards listed from $130 to $160, which is very legitimate for this card
Anything close to $150 is not legitimate. 6870's go for about 150 and they get the same megahash and require less electricity.
191  Economy / Goods / Re: WTS - Two Diamond 6970 on: August 26, 2011, 11:32:55 PM
$400 each is a bit expensive considering all the ones at newegg are under $386 and the cheapest is $340. What makes your cards better then the ones on newegg?
192  Economy / Goods / Re: Newegg international shipping. on: August 26, 2011, 09:56:38 PM
Gimme a price on 5870's Wink
She mentioned that I'd need to know the box size and apparently If you live out side of a delivery zone in another country its another fee added on. So I'd need some more specifics. At least the postal code and your city. You don't need to tell me your address at the moment if you don't want.

Also I haven't seen a 5870 on sale on newegg since early July so unless you know some other site I wont be able to get you a 5870.
193  Economy / Goods / Re: Newegg international shipping. on: August 26, 2011, 09:38:22 PM
I have a relative who works at fedex and she gets 75% off shipping. I would probably be willing to help you out if you pay up front. I would only ask for the cost of the item(s), shipping and like 10% extra for my trouble. If you want a huge amount of stuff I might be willing to drop down from 10%.
194  Economy / Gambling / Re: Xtreme HD5830 Sapphire raffle (CLOSED) 4 entries. winner to be announced. on: August 26, 2011, 07:49:55 PM
I almost bought a second one as well. Glad I didn't Tongue

It sucks that more people didn't want to get involved in this. I expected more people would jump at a chance to get a 5830 for 1 bitcoin.
195  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How many Mhash/sec can I get out of this Graphics card? on: August 26, 2011, 01:59:49 PM
Ah, ok. So I can expect around 270Mhash/sec. Should I know anything else about this card before I buy?
If your willing to mess with the core clock and mem clock you could probably push it to at least 300. Depending on how good your card is it might even be able to be pushed up to 330. I would recommend against changing the voltages.
196  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Cant overclock x5 5850 Rig on: August 26, 2011, 01:54:53 PM
Hi, i have a rig of x5 5850, custom case, so all the GPU are realy separated from each other and all with risers....To power is suplied by 2 x CL SP 700w, and the temperature never never go more than 52c. The fact is that i cant overclok the rig more than 850/300 so im onl getting 340mhs wich is realy bad for a 5850.
When i try to go more than 850 it fails. The OS (BAMT) stops responding so i have to reboot manualy the rig. Dont know wich the problem could be. I have to change the OS maybe ?
If your using windows 7 I recently built a 5x5850(sapphire) rig and the screen would freeze if I pushed it too far or tried downgrading the memory to below 500 mhz. Upgrading to 11.7 drivers and using trixx in staid of afterburner fixed all my problems.

198  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: HD5970 new in stock newegg 499$ ! on: August 25, 2011, 10:58:49 PM
I don't know about you guys...

but when the price of BTC drops $2 in one day, the first thing I want to do is sink $500 on another mining card (or $4,000 on 8 of them).

...or maybe not.

I was going to argue with you and realized it would be stupid. Also I'm sure you ignored my post earlier but just in case you missed it you were wrong in this thread earlier about roi and this isn't the first time I've corrected you.
199  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: I killed my 5970 on: August 25, 2011, 10:47:27 PM
I used Arctic MX2 which Arctic states is not electrically conductive. Thermal pads are nearly impossible to find for sale in this country so I had to use paste.
Its not really a question of what you used but how you used it.

Yes, I did put thermal paste on all the right places on the 5970, on both the top and the bottom of the card.
That makes it sound like you have no clue where you were suppose to place it. Can you specify what is the top and bottom of the card.

I'm curious how much your electricity bill is lol. Also how big are you trying to make your farm? You seem to constantly be adding to it.
