441  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is 311023 the biggest block ever found? on: July 16, 2014, 05:05:51 PM
Speaking of the largest block. what is the smallest block with the least transactions within a year? I mean there has to be a block with maybe like 50 transactions right?
I don't know the answer, but I think one could create a block with no transactions. I think?

But I mean in "modern times" arent there transactions every millisecond? How could one be created with 0?

There's no block with 0 transaction. By definition a block contains at least 1 tx, the coinbase tx.

Anyway look at the link that a good soul shared a few posts ago and you'll find the answer you're searching for.

For your convinience

Blocks with 1 transaction: 84607

The network, which is operated by the country’s National Credit Bank, allows customers to buy vouchers for bitcoin from a new company called BTCU.

After depositing cash in a terminal, purchasers receive a voucher containing an activation code either on a printed receipt or via an SMS message to their phones. They can then go to BTCU’s website to enter the activation code and claim their bitcoin.

Thanks guys ...
paper wallets next time, generated from an offline linux boot, cut it in half, half on you at all times half in a bank vault, everyone needs to do this, its important.

no need to cut your paper wallet, just use armory fragment backups (based on Shamir's Secret Sharing): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=149820.0

Sorry to break the party, but there is too much optimism/bulls in here.. Roll Eyes
Terrorist using BTC = Bad Image for Btc.
It will be a good excuse to impose stiff control by govts/banks on VC exchanges/services.

More bad news for Goxers:
www.coindesk.com/leak-documents-suggest-mt-gox-paid-200k-parent-company-may/

In other alarming news, the documents, if genuine, reveal Mt. Gox’s remaining funds total only $7.6m – significantly less than the $38m in assets claimed in its bankruptcy application.

can you link to this terrorist connection thing?

And more to the point what coin were terrorist using before the advent of btc? Bars of gold?

many thanks for not having quoted the troll.

453  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: I assume this 497 BTC output is unspendable? on: July 01, 2014, 08:59:21 AM
Well MtGox wasn't the only one to do it.  2609.36304319 BTC over the years due to this single malformed template isn't a small chunk of change.  It just struck me as strange as these 23 outputs represents the majority of the "custom" scripts in the UTXO and they all are the same exact mistake.
They were all within a couple hours of each other AFAIK and all by MTGOX.  Am I incorrect?

455  Economy / Speculation / Re: Should we (the investors, I mean) help incentivize p2pool? on: June 28, 2014, 03:33:28 PM
Actually P2Pool mining is really simple because you don't need to register any account anywhere. You can find existing P2pool nodes here:
http://p2pool.hostv.pl/

I use http://pool.fabulouspanda.co.uk:9332/static/ for example.

So you're not using your own  full node?

Nope, but from the documents I can see that a node is also really simple to set up. I pay 0.5% fee to the node operator which I don't consider too much. Are you aware of any other advantages that running my own node would give me? I wouldn't be able to accept other miners working under my P2Pool node anyway because I have a dynamic IP address.

I'd say that the main advantage to run your own node is you don't need to trust your node operator. Other than that I see no other pros, modulo fee, since you can't give access to others.
Now that I think about it running a node is a good thing for the btc network in general (the higher the number of nodes the better).

i remember a guy with the screen name 'genjix' preached bitcoin to a community of poker players back in 2010, encouraging them to invest.  nobody took him seriously, including me.  fuck me.

Amir Taaki, libbitcoin  author, dark wallet dev etc etc. He also has an active accout here on btctalk with the same handler

it could be him. ask him if he used to play online poker and if he used to go to liquidpoker.

i don 't know him personally but only by fame and through the use of the tools he crafted for us, having said that as soon as I have an occasion I will ask him for sure.

Furthermore, you help stabilize and secure the network aswell as verify transactions.

Unless you're solo mining or mining using p2pool you're note validating txs. In fact pointing your hw to your preferred pool doesn't even make you a miner, technically you're a hashser.
