I don't accept the assumptions that they make.  Also, that compares the entire US to individual European nations.  If we have to include Michigan and West Virginia in the averages, you should have to include Latvia, Estonia and the Ukraine.  Compare Apples to apples, buck.  Where do you live in Europe, and how does that compare to my state of Kentucky.  Shouldn't be that hard, since Kentucky is in the lower half of the states, but I would still find the comparisions interesting.  Mostly in what Europeans consider to be high on the list of features that add up to a "standard of living".  Compared to myself, personally, you have a near zero chance of having a higher standard of living, but then I make quite a bit more than the average Kentuckian.
4502  Other / Politics & Society / Re: An Agorist Company on: June 21, 2011, 11:11:41 PM
I have lived for the past 7 years on busking/performance, under-the-table jobs, and selling products I made myself...no taxes paid on any of it.  I consider that to be agorist in the sense that it is grey-market (otherwise legal goods/services, transacted under tax-radar).  Of course, I pay sales tax, and the taxes on petrol, but I have yet to figure out a way around that.

Been to PorcFest?
4503  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gavin will visit the CIA on: June 21, 2011, 11:04:35 PM
Lol, a nice amount of patriotism... maybe we should invite Gavin here in Europe  Grin

Do you think that your standard of living is higher in Europe?

Hahah, yes. This isn't the 50s anymore man.

In what way is your standard of living higher than mine?

What are the scenarios in which a Bitcoin bank would be valuable? For example I imagine paypal esq remote access to funds might be one but are there others? Why might you want google, or anyone else for that matter to hold on to your bitcoins for you?

Consumer protection.  I.E. theft & fraud insurance against misuse of your mobile wallet funds, just like a credit card works today.  There would have to be a liability cap.

"Instant" checkout.  Since Google knows who you are, they become the trusted intermediary for the vendor, so he doesn't actually have to wait for confirms nor employ a third party company to risk assess unconfirmed transactions on the fly.

Overspending credit, for some users.

Basic security, for mobile users who don't know any better.
4506  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Google Wallet on: June 21, 2011, 08:55:37 PM
I thought the whole point was to be de-centralized and not regulated...

exactly.  i like google and all of their free products, but i think this move pretty much violates the central concept of bitcoins.

No, the central point of Bitcoins is to allow the user the choices.  Other options can't be decentralized nor anonymous.  Just how far the user wants to go do that rabbit hole is entirely up to them.
4507  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Forum moderation policy on: June 21, 2011, 04:11:39 PM
The rumor is that the guys over at www.bitcoinforums.net agree to not censor/delete posts or lock conversations. That would be what free speech is. not this "Say what we like and don't speak ill of our friends" free speech crap.

I'm sure they would be happy to have all this gainful conversation.
4508  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How to merge block chains on: June 21, 2011, 05:30:54 AM
I'm surprised how many people think that mining (i.e. doing it just to get the coins) is the most important thing.

100 blocks take about 17 hours to generate. I'm talking about longer dropouts due to natural disasters, etc.

You don't have to be a miner to notice the decreasing rate of block discovery.

It's easy to say "should suspend the acceptance of new coins created", but hard when you're faced with economic reality of supply and demand in a 24/7 economy of a busy city/country.

Hard, perhaps.  Still something that should be taken under consideration if you find that your entire country is isolated from the rest of the Internet, and not just in the case of Bitcoin.

I don't mine and I don't intend to mine.

I never have, either.  Mining is still a necessary process whoever does it.

Yes, I read the white paper (Satoshi's PDF) and it doesn't talk about the economic reality.

Yes it does.

This thread is quickly following the path of the other one.  Calm down or I'll lock this one next.
4510  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will be on the Peter Schiff Show 2011-06-20 at 10AM EDT on: June 21, 2011, 04:27:24 AM

Donald Norman from bitcoin consultancy sounds like he is fast getting out of his depth. He mentions in one breath about the genesis block referring to "bailouts for banks" and in same interview unashamedly is asking for UK regulator assistance to run his Britcoin operation ... one conflicted individual.

I am a market anarchist but I think its good that they want regulation of the exchanges. How can that be? Some people will distrust bitcoins, and some others will try to attack it. By seeking to be regulated they are shielding themselves from this types of attacks. Also, its not like the governments were going to let them be. Governments were going to go for them anyways at some points, so you must as well do it on your own.

Yeah, at least if it's his idea, he has some say in how it's done.
4511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm Kevin, here's my side. on: June 21, 2011, 04:24:18 AM
Notice how flippantly the detractors of Kevin come to their conclusions. "Sounds like a jerk. Let's steal his bitcoins. Oh...that doesn't sound so good....how about...for the good of the the bitcoin community!"

It's so easy to just tell someone else to steal his coins. Why don't you personally go to his address, put a gun to his head, and demand his laptop? It's not quite the same when you think about it that way, huh? Do you guys sneer at lottery winners too? Jealous bastards.

No one can take these bitcoins from him, and he knows this.  If kevin is unwilling to return the coins, there is very little that any of us can do about it.
4512  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Google Wallet on: June 21, 2011, 04:14:21 AM
Flaunt it.  Challenge hackers to take it down.  I'd trust a site that openly talked trash to LulzSec, Anonymous, or any of those guys...  Smiley

Even better would be a market trade site ran by LulzSec openly trash talking the others to break it.
4513  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Google Wallet on: June 21, 2011, 04:02:05 AM

Makes me wonder if GoogleCoin isn't far off...

I'd doubt that google has any such plans, but I would say that google wallet is DOA.
4514  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Would some nice gentleman send me a tiny amount so I can check my client works? on: June 21, 2011, 03:52:03 AM
we can't post pictures of our "Junk", Admin just said so today.

tryin to trick us into getting ban hammered.

Oh, don't get me wrong.  I would have deleted it immediately.  Still a bad idea to make such commitments, even if you think you're calling a bluff.
4515  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Forum moderation policy on: June 21, 2011, 03:49:01 AM
Entertaining threads are, by definition, not useless.

Dropping the ball on Kevin, BIG TIME!!!
Looks like our friend knows a thing or two about Brute Force Attacks

So do I.  What are you accusing me of!?
4518  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Would some nice gentleman send me a tiny amount so I can check my client works? on: June 21, 2011, 03:40:09 AM

I'll do it if you post pics of your junk.  Tongue

Be careful of such commitments.
Do you think he'd actually do it?  Shocked

Just to see if he could get you to do the same, yes, I think that he would do it.
4519  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will be on the Peter Schiff Show 2011-06-20 at 10AM EDT on: June 21, 2011, 03:38:08 AM

For selfish reasons, I'm in no great hurry to educate the masses, they will figure it out eventually, and in the meantime I'd like to accumulate a nice little horde for myself with as little competition as possible.

Amen to that.  Keep the bad news coming.  It'll keep the riff-raff out long enough for me to add more savings.
4520  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Forum moderation policy on: June 21, 2011, 03:34:29 AM
1. Free speech
5. No NSFW content

Please read 5, then read 1, then read 5, then read 1 and tell me if you see a problem.

Can I say "fat cock" if I present it in a calm and polite manner?

Think of it like this, you have freedom of speech in the presence of your mother, but would you choose your words more carefully?
