Hi!

Practically every day, we read of cases where people get scammed, accounts being hacked and far too many coins are getting stolen. Almost all of these successful attacks are simply based on the fact that most of us are far too lax with their own data and accounts, or simply too good-faith (or greedy ;-). In order to sharpen the awareness of the methods of the scammers out there, I thought we could launch the series "How I met my Scammer". It would be great if every (near) victim briefly describes the story of how he or she was scammed, so we all have the chance to learn from the mistakes and to recognize similar situations in the future - and don't fall for the scam.

I'm going to start ;-)

Late December 2017: The ripple hype is almost at its peak. I open up Twitter that day and go through the tweets. One tweet catches my eye: A blog known to me is giving away 1000 ripple to everyone who retweets and comments their the tweet. I do so immediately.

A short time later, I am contacted by "the blog" that I would have won. The joy was of course huge, so I did not realize that the Twitter account was faked ... To receive my prize I had to sign up on a portal where I had a wallet which would contain my prize. Said and done. Unfortunately, the wallet in this account was not initialized yet, so I should send 20 XRPs to activate it, which of course I do immediately.
And indeed: Suddenly my wallet was "activated". The scamer now told me the price was not 1000 XRP, but 100% of the amount I send to the wallet. So if I send 100 XRP, I get 200 XRP as a prize. Now the alarm bells finally rang. I blocked the user, closed Twitter, and cursed myself and my lost 20 XRPs, which were worth $60 at that time.

I am very looking forward to your stories now!

Anything that you think is so good to be true is a possible scheme that will scam your money so stay away from those HYIP sites and other investments that could triple your money for surely it will take your investment down the drain.
464  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / US Court Indicts Founders of Crypto Company For Fraudulent Scheme on: May 16, 2018, 02:13:43 AM
A US federal court has indicted three founders of a company purported to offer cryptocurrency-related financial products and have raised $25 million in an initial coin offering. In addition to claiming to have licenses in 38 states, the company also claimed partnerships with Bancorp, Visa, and Mastercard to issue its own cards.

Three Founders Indicted

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Monday that the founders of a cryptocurrency-related company have been indicted in the Manhattan federal court.

US Court Indicts Founders of Crypto Company for Fraudulent Scheme Florida residents Sohrab Sharma, 27, Raymond Trapani, 27, and Robert Farkas, 31, are co-founders of a startup called Centra Tech. The company purported to offer cryptocurrency-related financial products including the Centra Card, a debit card which supposedly “allowed users to spend various types of cryptocurrency to make purchases at any establishment that accepts Visa or Mastercard payment cards,” the DOJ described.

The three were arrested last month. The US Attorney’s Office of Southern District of New York and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) seized 91,000 ether which was “raised from victims as part of the charged scheme” in an initial coin offering (ICO).

The attorney for the United States, Robert Khuzami, explained:

As alleged, the defendants conspired to capitalize on investor interest in the burgeoning cryptocurrency market. They allegedly made false claims about their product and about relationships they had with credible financial institutions, even creating a fictitious Centra Tech CEO. Whether traditional or cutting-edge, investment vehicles can’t legally be peddled with falsehoods and lies.

ICO Worth $60+ Million

The three began “soliciting investors to purchase unregistered securities, in the form of digital tokens issued by Centra Tech” through an ICO in approximately July. In oral and written materials, they falsely represented that Centra Tech had an experienced executive team and “had formed partnerships with Bancorp, Visa, and Mastercard to issue Centra Cards licensed by Visa or Mastercard.” They also represented that the company “had money transmitter and other licenses in 38 states, among other claims,” the DOJ revealed, adding:

Based in part on these claims, victims provided millions of dollars’ worth of digital funds in investments for the purchase of Centra Tech tokens.

“In or about October 2017, at the end of Centra Tech’s ICO, those digital funds raised from victims were worth more than $25 million” – the amount which has now appreciated to more than $60 million.

False Statements
US Court Indicts Founders of Crypto Company for Fraudulent SchemeThe Department of Justice found that statements made by the three to secure these investments “were false,” emphasizing that the three “were well aware of the falsity of such claims.”

For example, “the purported CEO ‘Michael Edwards’ and another supposed member of Centra Tech’s executive team are fictitious people who were fabricated to dupe investors.”

The DOJ then described the scheme used to fabricate the CEO and another executive:

Sharma text-messaged Trapani on or about July 29, 2017, that they ‘Need to find someone who looks like Michael’…Similarly, Sharma later wrote during that same exchange: ‘Gonna kill both CEO and her [another executive],’ ‘Gonna say they were married and got into an accident.’

Furthermore, the company’s claimed partnerships and licenses were non-existent, the DOJ revealed, citing text messages between Trapani and Sharma discussing “Centra Tech’s lack of actual partnerships with banks or credit card companies.” Another text message from Sharma to Trapani and Farkas says, “Gotta apply for all licenses,” “Should I even say this.”

Four-Count Indictment
According to the Justice Department’s announcement:

All three of them are charged in a four-count Indictment.

One count is “conspiracy to commit securities fraud, which carries a maximum potential sentence of five years in prison.” The other three carry “a maximum potential sentence of 20 years in prison.” They are securities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and wire fraud. Additionally, each charge also carries potential financial penalties. “The maximum potential prison sentences in this case are prescribed by Congress and are provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendants will be determined by the judge,” the DOJ wrote.

Moreover, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has separately filed civil charges against the trio.

These scam ICOs just won't stop. I just don't know why are they so eager to take advantage to those people who have less knowledge about cryptocurrency and try to gain money by persuading people to invest in their scammy project. Will this ever stop?

Bitcoin could become illegal in all countries that bans child pornography after discovering this: https://www.sciencealert.com/bitcoin-illegal-almost-everywhere-after-shocking-blockchain-discovery-child-pornography

What can you say about it?

They're really trying their very best to kill one of the best innovations ever created. They are too focused on the negative side of it all when it comes to bitcoin and blockchain. Haters of this technology are those people who doesn't understand what bitcoin and blockchain technology is. So tiring to hear such ridiculous news just to bring down the value of bitcoin. Those people really have hidden agenda why they are destroying this very awesome technology that changed a lot of lives to those who truly embraced the benefits and advantages of this technology.

But at this generation you noticed that even though you are working with full time job it is not enough to make better way living. That's why you would try to look in another opportunities that helps you to earn more money for family.

Do you think Investment in education is better or Investment in cryptocurrency especially in bitcoin is much better?

Base of this articles which is better investment in future for you?

Share your thoughts about this.

Bitcoin is viewed from an investment perspective, it is more often compared to gold than it is to other currencies. That is because bitcoin and gold have a lot in common as assets. Both are limited in supply, have functional use and are considered by many, despite their volatility, to be good stores of value. When gold and bitcoin were compared as investments over the last five years, bitcoin greatly outperformed the precious metal, generating an annualized return of 155 percent compared to gold’s annualized loss of 6 percent during the same period. These exuberant returns indicate that bitcoin is getting investors excited about the prospect of placing funds into a brand new asset class.

Bitcoin’s soaring value and its proven investor performance compared to the gold standard, are indicators that it is high time to weigh the opportunities and risks that come with investing in the world’s leading digital currency.

Opportunities:

Many argue that bitcoin, like other currencies, has value only because people perceive it to have value. It is for this reason that many critics view bitcoin’s price development as nothing more than a bubble. However, there are drivers behind bitcoin’s excellent returns that have nothing to do with hype or speculative opportunism.

Why an Education is the Best Investment you can Make

Whether you consider your education a right, a privilege or something you “just need to do” as part of life, you should always consider it an investment. If you think of your future professional life as a business, your education is an integral part in the overall structure and quality of that business.

And it doesn’t matter if you end up working for yourself or someone else, the education element is an investment that provides the tools necessary for you to move forward and become successful. Every expert, leader and big shot in every industry started by learning the basic skills they needed to get the ball rolling, and the same will be true for you.

The Time of Your Life

Besides having a great time with new experiences, connections are the first reason your education is a worthwhile investment. Quite often, college years are networking disguised as fun. It may not seem like you’re making professional connections for the future, but it’s not uncommon to reconnect with the people you shared this experience with later on, especially in the age of social networks.

Decision-Making Leverage

Smart decisions are crucial for a business to excel, and getting a good education puts you in a position to make the right professional decisions at the right time. Being educated in your field gives you a sense of accomplishment and confidence, which enable you to make decisions with confidence moving forward.

Career Boost

It goes without saying that an education is a great investment if you plan to work in a career for someone else. Depending on your career choice, a formal education might be a must-have to even get into the field. But even if it isn’t, taking that extra step will get you started higher up the ladder and will help you move up at a faster pace.

Future Security

Security is a word you see come up regularly when speaking about education and employment. Whether you want to go out on your own or work for someone else, that education will be there to break your fall if something goes wrong or doesn’t work out.

If you lose your job or your entrepreneurial attempt falls flat, an education means you get a second chance and it won’t take nearly as long to make it happen. If you think of your career and your financial life like a business, it’s easy to see why an education is the best investment you can make in yourself.

Crypto currency are allowed in your country?

Yes and it's quite convenient buying and selling bitcoin with an exchange that we have as long as you have done KYC.
468  Economy / Services / Re: [CFNP] IOS - Signature & Avatar Campaign | Up to $150/week in BTC & Tokens! on: May 11, 2018, 08:57:13 AM
I know it's none of my business as I am not one of the participants here but I got to say this: It's obvious the Campaign Manager, Madz, is entertaining himself leaving you guys to your wandering thoughts. He enjoys this uncertainty his incommunicado posturing is creating.

It isn't really any of your business. I think I was pretty clear earlier that I would let people know when I knew for sure whether the campaign would be continuing or not. I still don't have a definite answer, and I'd rather not spread disinformation by speculating. It isn't my decision to make and I don't have any more new information at the moment.

That being said, there have been a lot of questions and it has been a few days, so here is my take on it. As stated in the original post, this campaign was only guaranteed to last for 4 weeks. All campaign participants have been paid for these 4 weeks. Obviously, I have more funds in the escrow address (it is public), so it is entirely possible it might continue, however, I have not been told whether this is the case, and I can't in good conscience continue making payments when that was not in the original agreement. If I was to guess, I would expect the campaign to continue with adjusted pay rates (closer to the original USD estimates) and possibly less participants, however, I will have a definite answer for sure in the next few days. For those who don't have the patience to wait, feel free to seek new opportunities Smiley

Thanks for the update Madz. I can patiently wait for the campaign to resume. Won't be removing the signature till it resumes. Just ignore them Madz they don't know what they're doing. More power to you and to the IOST campaign!

We would need faster coins with low transaction fees for the operation of such machines. And as the profit for machines comes from the product itself, they should not charge extra to the customers. The thing that killed bitcoin ATM was insanely high transaction fees and high commission fees.

The good thing with this machine is that it's set up with high speed transactions and low fees. Maybe it won't wait for confirmations to be completed as long as the machine detects your payment then your good to go.

This machine is not just limited to BTC and we all know that XRP is way faster than BTC when it comes to transaction speed. I guess they already studied and have conducted a thorough research on the pros and cons when it comes to automated machines that accepts crypto so the speed and fees is already been taken care of by the company so that it will be realistic and usable in the society.

Wow. That's a really nice, the concept is very futuristic. There's a possibility that digital currency will be implemented as a mode of payment including this micropayments. The only thing that I think is the hindrance is why would you waste your btc in a pack of chips and such. But surely the concept is really good!

This machine accepts altcoins as well so that you'll have a choice on whether to use btc or xrp or other altcoins. I would definitely waste some BTC just for experience in operating this machine if given the chance.  Cheesy

Thats really cool. I'd like to have it in my city, they should list countries and cities too. I hope it implement soon in future. It will let people have faith in crypto.

The adaption of the people to this kind of innovation specially crypto is still limited so maybe few years from now. I am looking forward as well seeing one of this machines in my city.

I really like the fact that people start to integrate crypto more and more into their life. I'm sure that in a couplw of years, this vending machines that accept crypto will be a normal thing, and we will be able to use crypto everywhere we want to do so.

Than will definitely happen since we are all moving to the digital world where in innovation is so awesome and cool.

Thats crazy idea! But how will be transfer times and fees? Bitcoin is not fast enough, ripple is good but i think so we need to waves for this idea Smiley faster, lower fees and cheaper.
Hope we will see this machine everywhere Smiley

I wouldn't be paying BTC though maybe some altcoins like Ripple is okay since it has very fast transaction speed. I can't risk waiting for the confirmation for me to receive a can of coca cola. Grin
471  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Vending Machine That Accepts Cryptocurrency on: May 10, 2018, 07:55:19 PM
It's a good idea, but i wouldn't waste my bitcoin to buy a packet of crisps! That's what spare coins in your pocket are for. I like the idea of vending machines accepting a few currencies, but it should be for bigger items. Interesting to see if they can make a profit on those

They are accepting other cryptocurrencies as well aside from bitcoin. Since it's a vending machine and its a business, they'll surely get profits. It would totally defeat the purpose of creating a vending machine that won't profit the business owner. Cheesy

it's a good invention. now there is a chance that cryptocurrency will replace cards and money.

Cryptocurrency, credit cards and money will coexist cos there are lots of people who aren't ready to accept change and there are some remote areas that has a limited access to the internet.

Oh yeah, that's I was actually waiting for! the first signs of cryptocurrencies being used as the real method of payment!
I hope that in the nearest future this will reduce the volatility of cryptos and they will enter our live as the most secure money.

There are some people who are actually using bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as payments and some business establishments are accepting cryptos as well.

On Track Innovations (OTI) invented the world's first cryptocurrency vending machine with "high-speed, low-fee" micropayments. This machine accepts Bitcoin ( BTC ), Bitcoin Cash BCH and Ripple ( XRP ).

http://cryptonewsreview.com/world-first-cryptocurrency-payments-system-for-vending-machines-launched/

Vending machines are rampant anywhere in the world and it would be so cool seeing one that accepts cryptocurrency with faster speed transactions and lower fees. This will totally surpass the traditional vending machines that accepts quarters or dimes since all you have to do is use a standard mobile crypto wallet and your good to go. The good thing is that all currency exchange issues were already handled and taken care of.

This is so awesome that I can't wait to see or even operate one.

Will this innovation be accepted in the society? As a businessman, will you invest in this kind of business knowing that crypto values are very volatile?

It's a pity not to publish the list of countries in which these machines will be located, I would like to see such a machine in my city

You can also check this link. Maybe its near your state. https://www.dash.org/2017/11/20/keene.html

ETH might soon hit the $1,000 mark following the update - read more: https://coingape.com/ethereum-releases-casper-protocol-update/

One of the best updates from Eth team. We will be expecting a sudden spike in Eth few days or weeks from now. I'll be adding some of my investments soon and hoping that I can profit a little bit taking advantage with this new update. Sure thing it will create great impact on the value as well as invite new investors. Kudos to Eth team for making the technology trustworthy and awesome.

Been waiting for eth to reach $1,000 mark. With this update im quite positive it will. The pow to pos is beneficial to miners, requiring less electricity wastage and faster transactions. This really would pump up ethereum. Once it crosses the $823 mark, it will moon up to $1000 in no time.

Waiting for this moment as well. Hope that this great update will take effect as soon as possible when it comes to Eth's value.

there are so many icos in the market most of them are scam do you still belive in ico ?

Yes I do but not all of them. It really depends on the technology that they can offer. If it can be applied and usable in the real world then I'd go for it. I know that there are lots of scam ICOs today but we need also to consider things or factors to avoid those projects. We need to read the whitepaper and know the devs or people behind it. We also need to check the number of people who are supporting the project whether in discord or in telegram. There are laws now regulating those devs starting ICOs to prevent people from being scammed so better check for legalities.
476  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: is ico secure ? on: May 10, 2018, 09:50:42 AM
in this time is ico is the secure way to invest or all the icos are scam ?

There's no assurance that an ICO whether scam or not will make you profit. There are some legit ICOs that can lose you profit because the token or coin is undervalued when introduced to the public. I suggest that you do invest in tokens or coins that has already proven its performance over time. Here are some of the tokens or altcoins that I can suggest for you to invest in. Make sure to do your own research as well with regards to its technology for you to build trust and have faith with your investment.

Here is my top 5 favorite altcoins:

1. IOST
2. EOS
3. Eth
4. XMR
5. LTC

Invest at your own risk and always do your own research with regards to its performance. Remember to always invest an amount that you can only afford to lose.

478  Economy / Services / Re: [CFNP] IOS - Signature & Avatar Campaign | Up to $150/week in BTC & Tokens! on: May 09, 2018, 03:53:28 PM
It's really weird since the token is sufficient enough to pay us all for the 4th week. At least he should've give us an update on when he's gonna send the tokens to us just like what he did the previous week when it was delayed.
Yeah, there's over 800,000 IOSt in the escrow wallet and has been all this time. That's a value of over $60,000 right now in the market. So, I'm not really sure what's going on, and I wouldn't say it's anything new because we've dealt with delays from the start. The only thing really strange is that week 4 isn't even listed on the doc. I'm not sure what conclusion to draw from that.

I highly respect Madz and I know that he's trustworthy. We really can't tell what's the real score that caused this delay but I'm positive that we can get our pay anytime soon. Maybe he's just preoccupied with some work in real life.

Have anyone can pm to MadZ? It is over a 5/7 days of 4th week.

I have left a message with the Bear. If you don't know who the Bear is, read the OP thoroughly.
I'll let you guys know if I hear back anything.

Thanks for reaching out on behalf of the team. Hope we can hear any updates from you real soon. Have a good one!

Why some people want the Ethereum to over come Bitcoin in the near future? Is it because they make profit from ETH or what?

Those some people that you think of, do have big minds thinking that Eth can surpass bitcoin which is absurd. For me bitcoin is more trustworthy to skyrocket than Eth but we can't really predict the future so if you believe in the technology that you invested in then just let your hopes fly and hold every coin that you think will perform this year and be able to profit more.
480  Economy / Services / Re: [CFNP] IOS - Signature & Avatar Campaign | Up to $150/week in BTC & Tokens! on: May 09, 2018, 02:21:29 AM
Maybe campaign manager Madz is looking for the additional fund from IOST. To obtain the continuation of another week to our signature campaign. Let's wait and be patient.

He didn't confirm nor update that the campaign will be extended for another week. Why would he wait for the payment for the 5th week if he didn't make the spreadsheet for the 4th week and didn't pay us for that.

It's definitely a little strange to see MadZ activity as being online every day, often a couple times a day and still we have no idea about what's up with week 4 or the campaign future. I'm assuming the campaign will be over, but do we all need to keep our signatures until payment? Last I checked there wasn't even a week 4 section in the google doc...very weird.

It's really weird since the token is sufficient enough to pay us all for the 4th week. At least he should've give us an update on when he's gonna send the tokens to us just like what he did the previous week when it was delayed.
