A quick search shows Joel is right (2 PCIe 8 lanes).

The other issue plugging GPUs into this (bandwidth should not be a problem) will be power draw.  The normal draw is 75W from the mobo, so if you plug in two GPUs it will need possibly double that.  The connections may not be designed to handle that power.  I suspect that's what burned my dell poweredge serve motherboard when I was playing with risers last year - i.e. too much current and slow over-heating = crispy fibreglass and lots of smoke => trash.

Would something like this fix the power problem?

463  Economy / Goods / Re: [DEAL] Sapphire HD 5850s NEW 138.49 buy online on: July 28, 2011, 09:48:27 PM
Jesus, where is all this hate is coming from. Some of us work hard to get deals on things and feel entitled to make something from it if we share them. Our definitions of begging are very different, buddy.
I was the first person to post finding the 145 deal on ncixus on this forum. I could have demanded btc for the link or even asked politely for donations but I didn't. It's not hard to find these deals especially after you acquire a list of good websites.
464  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Theory crafting on: July 28, 2011, 09:11:37 PM
use your first setup with 8 gpus, but not the hd6 crap, put some nice HD5850 on it, expinsive but powerfull, 2 good PSUs with 800-850W and it will be fine.
It will give you about 2,9Ghash

And btw, why have you choosen such expensive boards with full 16 physical lanes per pci-e slot? there are much cheaper boards with just 2 or 3 pci-e 16x slots and a few pci-e 1 slot.
Its better to go for the cheap ones, as you surly know, the amount of lanes doesnt matter per slot.

I'm not actually making these. The reason I picked the 8 pcie x16 because its the only board with 8 pcie slots. In order for the 6770 or the 5770 to compete you need to minimize the costs of all the other materials by loading a board up with as many as possible.

I was just trying to be creative so people would think out side the box.

Also if you want to post the set up your talking about with 2.9 ghash and get the megahash to dollar ratio then we might get the ball rolling.

Sapphire 5850 1GB for $176

Sapphire 6850 1GB for $145
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908&nm_mc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r&cm_mmc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r-_-Video+Cards-_-Sapphire+Tech-_-14102908

I can get a a Sapphire reference with voltage control and aftermarket cooling 6870 1GB for $180
 or
a Sapphire 6950 2GB for $265.

Whats the best deal here? I mean, the 6870 for $180 sounds like a great deal especially because its reference but what about the 5850? The 6850 is cheaper too. I could get 2 6850s over the 6950.
The 68xx's are garbage for mining at the price point they are being sold at. They would need to be around 100-130 to be even considerable. Go with the 5850 sapphire for 176. People have said multiple times that the sapphire can go 408 on stock voltage.
466  Economy / Goods / Re: [DEAL] Sapphire HD 5850s NEW 138.49 buy online on: July 28, 2011, 07:38:29 PM
Coolwhip knows how to use google. It makes us so proud of him. Some companies use price matching. It's worth a try fellas.
To be perfectly honest I feel the begging from every one on this forum is pathetic. You just said it your self a simple google search can find this so why should any one donate to you?
467  Economy / Goods / Re: Sapphire Radeon Xtreme HD 5850 FOR ONLY $176 on: July 28, 2011, 07:05:37 PM
If they deliver to the US thats only 146 usd which isn't bad 1 dollar more then the other deal that expired.

For the love of god, it's waste!

Waist is your midsection.  Where all the beer goes.

rofl my bad I always spell it wrong apparently and the spell check on firefox only offers "waist". It doesn't give me both options so I just quickly choose that one. From now on ill watch out for it because I feel like I've done it multiple times. Tongue

I'm bored so I figured I would start this thread for a fun way for people to be creative and also enlighten people of possible unknown set ups.

Basically you make a miner that is as efficient as you can in megahash per dollar. You have to link to the item it can be sold out however as long as the price is displayed.

I'll start off with my own crazy build to show you can be super creative.

792-8x6770(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=602046&CatId=7005)
290-mobo(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130595R)
75-cpu(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=567308&CatId=7226)
10-ram(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134657)
80-psu(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159101)
6-flash drive(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820241103)
99-8*extender(https://cablesaurus.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=9)

and two of these:
http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad245/airdatasolutions/miner03.jpg

Finally got my 4th 5830 working on this miner !  Got a great rack/shelf unit for $4.99 at target.  It was in the kitchen utilities section Smiley  Cards sit nicely on the rack with the pcie connector going through.

Total cost:1362
expected megahash:1920

Megahash per dollar:1.41

This probably isn't the most efficient you could go but its a hell of a lot better then most ratio's and I was just trying to be creative with something people don't really consider,
472  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: [NEWEGG SALE!!!]Radeon HD 6850 149.99[NEWEGG SALE!!!] on: July 28, 2011, 02:47:26 PM
I could get a 6870 with an aftermarket cooler and voltage control for $180. Is that a better deal than this 6850 for $150, or the 5850 for $175?

I assume the 6870 you are speaking of is the ASUS directCU, if you are using linux, don't do it, you cannot overvolt, because you cannot bios flash :/ Dam non-reference cards.
I personally think over volting is a waist of money. Not only does it raise the power consumption of your card exponentially you can also easily kill your card if you push it too hard.
473  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How many mh/s would this gpu get? on: July 28, 2011, 02:05:56 PM
Oh I ment 5870's in general...sorry.

I'm pretty sure it'll do the same though?
Some cards can vary quite a bit for example some 5830's cant get above 300 megahash while the sapphire can get up to 330 easily.
474  Economy / Goods / Re: Sapphire Radeon Xtreme HD 5850 FOR ONLY $176 on: July 28, 2011, 02:01:46 PM
I would rather have a 6870 personally, but i suspect the 5850 is the better miner.  6870 will have more resale value down the road and better for gaming.
While a 5850 wont have any value to gamers down the road it will still hold its value pretty well with miners because it's one of the best cards you can get.
475  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: [NEWEGG SALE!!!]Radeon HD 6850 149.99[NEWEGG SALE!!!] on: July 28, 2011, 01:53:05 PM
A 6870 is just a super expensive 5830 and the 6850 is just a complete waist of money.
476  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: More cheap 5830's. Real site or a scam? on: July 28, 2011, 01:45:46 PM

The 5870 is listed 4th in the top chart on that page and there are over 2 dozen lines in the main chart for the 5870. I can see how those would be hard to find.

Good luck mining Wink

Pretty sure he means what this specific brand is capable of doing not what a 5870 in general is capable of doing.
478  Economy / Goods / Re: Sapphire Radeon Xtreme HD 5850 FOR ONLY $145!!กก on: July 28, 2011, 04:16:32 AM
Unless I'm missing something, the price has gone up.

Our Price:    $176.15  USD

Deal was up until 7-27 they must have changed it back. Still isn't a bad deal but not nearly as great.
479  Economy / Goods / Re: Sapphire Radeon Xtreme HD 5850 FOR ONLY $145!!กก on: July 28, 2011, 01:19:19 AM
This is a really good deal.  I'd buy at least 5 today but I don't get paid until Friday   Cry

I posted a request on the NCIX forums to see if they would extend the offer until Friday.  If you're like me and can't order them today, might want to do a reply to my post on the NCIX forums and help get it noticed.  Worth a shot...

http://forums.ncix.com/forums/?mode=showthread&forum=119&threadid=2387361&pagenumber=0&msgcount=0&subpage=1
To be honest it will probably be a miracle if they aren't sold out by friday. This is the best deal for the 5850 I have seen in 2 months and its a sapphire.
480  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: [NEWEGG SALE!!!]Radeon HD 6850 149.99[NEWEGG SALE!!!] on: July 28, 2011, 01:08:26 AM
For 50 dollars less you can pick up at 5770 and those easily get 200mhs. It seems 2mhs/1$ is a sweetspot.
I wouldn't call 2 megahash per dollar the sweetspot. The 5830 @ 130 gives you 2.4 if not 2.5 and the sapphire 5850 has been said to be able to do 400 easily with no over volt that's 2.76 megahash per dollar. The super good deal on the 5870 a week or two ago ($189) can easily give you 2.3. The 5770 can be a good deal but not at 100 if you can get one at 70 or 80 maybe. That's 2.86 but keep in mind all the parts in your server dilute the megahash per dollar value. The only way I think a 5770 build could work is if you could manage to squeeze 8 of them on a mobo but I havent done enough research on that to be positive.
